That's two presidents later than would have been until Donald Trump's tradition-breaking presidency.President Joe Biden, who served as vice president during Obama's 8-year term, and First Lady Jill Biden will <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-host-obama-white-house-portrait-ceremony-2022-7">host the ceremony</a> for the Obamas.In a White House press conference Tuesday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the Bidens are looking forward to hosting the Obamas."President Biden and Dr. Biden are honored to have former President Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama back to the White House for the unveiling of their portraits, which will hang on the walls of the White House forever as reminders of the power of hope and change," Jean-Pierre said.The portrait ceremony is a long-standing tradition where the succeeding president can honor the commander-in-chief before them, regardless of political party. Apollo in January took a $760 million stake in "<keyword id="11975656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="dune" source="Orion">Dune</keyword>" producer <keyword id="13232532" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="legendary" source="Orion">Legendary</keyword>, in a move that "is about us making our own IP," Apollo partner <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apollo-global-partner-reveals-acquisition-strategy-tegna-legendary-future-ma-2022-2">Aaron Sobel told Insider</a>. "You're going to be seeing us do M&amp;A and there's much more that's going to happen," he said."More traditional media companies are trying to pivot," said Waymaker Law founder Ryan Baker, adding that periods of disruption foment more M&amp;A activity because it's "quite common for entrenched incumbent players tied to existing technology to not be as nimble" and they can often adapt more quickly by buying than building.Not only does the appetite for production capabilities appear insatiable, but valuations also are sky-high. Hello Sunshine, whose projects include Apple TV+ drama "The Morning Show," was valued at $900 million in its Candle Media deal. SpringHill Co., founded by LeBron James and Maverick Carter, nabbed a $725 million valuation when it took on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lebron-james-springhill-valued-725-million-nike-epic-invest-2021-10">an investment</a> from a group including RedBird Capital, Nike, and Epic Games. <h2>'The key is buying franchises.'</h2>Such targets aren't being evaluated as traditional production companies, but rather as IP generators that have the potential to feed the demand for the next "Squid Game" or "Yellowstone," projects built with DNA that could anchor universes and also extend beyond the screen. "Original content is becoming more important and you want to bring a lot of the production capabilities in house," said Pivotal entertainment analyst Jeffrey Wlodarczak. "The key is buying franchises." All that deal flow is leading some Hollywood companies to hang "for-sale" signs. Village Roadshow, the producer of "Joker" and "The Lego Movie," has hired PJT Partners to seek investment or acquisition offers, per the <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/village-roadshow-producer-on-movies-including-joker-and-the-matrix-explores-strategic-options-11642182117">Wall Street Journal</a>.The limited set of larger production businesses that make attractive acquisition targets, sources said, includes A24, Skydance Media, and MRC. But among smaller shops, having a talent affiliation is key. A production company without a big-name is more like an arms dealer, a top dealmaker said, and typically lacks the potential to expand into multiple verticals — or to command a top-tier valuation. Celebrity-fronted businesses come with their own risks. If the talent isn't interested in expanding beyond filmed entertainment, the value of the deal declines. And if a star's reputation falters, the business could slip with it. Not all independent shops control the IP they create. Many production companies make work-for-hire or don't control the rights to a project once it is sold off to a studio distributor. Still, some buyers are game to pay for access to the next big idea from, say, creators like the Russo brothers, even though their reputation was built largely on "The Avengers" — aka Marvel IP — said another dealmaker who asked to remain anonymous.Based on January interviews with five entertainment industry experts and insiders, Insider identified a list of 10 production companies that could be compelling acquisition targets as M&amp;A activity continues.<h2>10 Hollywood M&amp;A targets with production capabilities and brand recognition</h2><ul><li>A24 The company led by CEO David Fenkel and chairman Daniel Katz has long been the subject of acquisition speculation thanks to its lineup of buzzy titles, including Greta Gerwig's "Lady Bird" and best picture Oscar winner "Moonlight." A24 — which also produces TV shows like "Ramy" — has a production deal with Apple and a film licensing agreement with Showtime. </li><li>Array Ava DuVernay's company produces, markets, and distributes films from women and people of color. Array also is behind DuVernay projects like Netflix series "Colin in Black &amp; White" and has a deal with the streamer to release film projects including 2021 dramedy "Donkeyhead." </li><li>Bad Robot J.J. Abrams and wife Katie McGrath's 23-year-old shop is behind everything from HBO drama "Westworld" to the next installment of the "Mission: Impossible" franchise. Though Bad Robot doesn't own the rights to those titles, Abrams is such an in-demand creative talent that <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/jj-abrams-officially-closes-sizable-warnermedia-film-tv-partnership-1232979/">WarnerMedia</a> in 2019 paid a reported $250 million for a five-year film and TV overall deal with him. </li><li>Blumhouse Jason Blum's shingle has perfected its model of producing horror films on a tight budget, projects that reap big gains when they hit with audiences. Consider 2021's "Halloween Kills," which made more than $131 million at the box office, amid COVID fears and restrictions, on a $20 million budget. A 10-year first-look deal with Universal Pictures that runs through 2024 bodes stability for Blumhouse's film business.</li><li>Chernin Entertainment Peter Chernin's company — which produced NBC's "New Girl" and the rebooted "Planet of the Apes" film series — is said to be exploring strategic options. It has a first-look deal with Netflix, and in 2020 it struck a deal with Spotify to develop its podcasts for film and TV. </li><li>Imagine Entertainment Previously a target for Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs' Candle Media, the production company co-founded by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer was in talks early this year to sell a stake to London-based Centricus, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/ron-howard-and-brian-grazers-imagine-entertainment-in-talks-to-sell-majority-stake-to-investment-firm-centricus-11642175909">WSJ</a> reported. Its recent films include "Hillbilly Elegy" and "Tick, Tick…Boom!" for Netflix. </li><li>Scout Productions The 28-year-old company led by Michael Williams, David Collins and chief creative officer Rob Eric has driven some of the highest-profile LGBTQ+ projects in Hollywood, including "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" and its "Queer Eye" reboot on Netflix.</li><li>Seven Bucks Productions Led by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Dany Garcia, Seven Bucks produced "Red Notice" for Netflix and has the upcoming "Black Adam" for Warner Bros. It also makes content for Johnson's YouTube channel, where he has 5.89 million subscribers. </li><li>Skydance Media David Ellison's production shingle is behind the upcoming "Top Gun: Maverick" and is teaming with regular producing partner Bad Robot on "Mission: Impossible 7" and "Star Trek 4." The company — which has taken investments from RedBird Capital, Korea's CJ ENM, and Tencent — will produce a slate of live-action films for Apple, where it already has an animated film and TV series deal. </li><li>Village Roadshow The film producer and financier majority owned by private equity firm Vine Alternative Investments is best known for Warner Bros. co-productions including "The Matrix Resurrections" and "Joker." And, these innovations are on top of chains such as Moe's and Taco Bell that already serve queso. So, what makes the cheesy dip so special?Business InsiderFirst, the basics. Chile con queso, or queso, is made with a mix of chili peppers and melted cheese. There is no release date for "New Mutants." <h2>Why this blow hurts: It took years to get so many female-led movies to screen with female writers and directors, and now many of these movies will be released within a few weeks of one another</h2><div type="image" title="ww84 patty jenkins wonder woman" height="2179" width="3000" msid="75184740" hostid="261"></div>Women accounted for 12% of directors of the top 100-grossing movies of 2019, <a href="https://womenintvfilm.sdsu.edu/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/2019_Celluloid_Ceiling_Report.pdf">according to a study from the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film</a> on the employment of women in the Top 100, 250, and 500 films of 2019. That number is up from 8% in 2017. According to the same study, women accounted for 20% of all writers in the top 100 films of 2019. In 2010 and 2017, that number was 10%.When it comes to women in lead roles, a 2020 <a href="http://assets.uscannenberg.org/docs/aii-inequality-leads-co-leads-20200103.pdf">USC Annenberg study on inequality across gender and race</a> found that 43 of the 100 highest-grossing movies of 2019 featured a female lead or co-lead. That's a 13-year high. Only 20 of the 100 top movies from 2007 featured a female lead or co-lead.Why did it take so long to see an increase in female-led films both in front of and behind the camera?Well, in part, it took years to justify why female-led films and female-led superhero movies were bankable in Hollywood after flops like "Catwoman" (2004) and "Elektra" (2005).Studios couldn't seem to fathom <a href="https://screenrant.com/why-have-female-superhero-movies-failed-so-far/">that audiences wanted something beyond the male gaze of popular female characters</a> under a thinly-veiled plot. ("Catwoman" is literally about Halle Berry's character saving the world from a dangerous face cream at an evil cosmetics company. It's also filled with a lot of terrible cat puns.)<div type="image" title="catwoman halle berry" height="927" width="1400" msid="75184744" hostid="261"></div>It wasn't until the success of Kristen Stewart's "Twilight" series (2008-2012) and the Jennifer Lawrence-led "Hunger Games" franchise (2012-2015), that action films with female leads were seen as a hot commodity. But instead of an influx of female superhero films, Hollywood searched <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/film/2014/apr/25/classic-young-adult-novels-hollywood-adapt-hunger-games-divergent">for the next big YA film adaptation</a>, which <a href="https://film.avclub.com/not-catching-fire-21-ya-adaptations-that-failed-to-lau-1798281657">didn't always</a> <a href="https://www.vulture.com/2013/11/why-do-so-many-ya-adaptations-flop.html">pan out</a> ("The Mortal Instruments," "The Giver," and "Beautiful Creatures" are among the many attempts of book-to-screen.)In 2013, it still seemed a <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2013/12/earth-to-hollywood-people-will-pay-to-see-a-female-superhero-film/282107/">far-fetched idea to give female characters like Wonder Woman a solo movie</a>. Gal Gadot's debut as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman's wasn't in the 2017 film. It was a <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/2799494/batman-v-superman-wonder-woman/">scene-stealing cameo in 2016's "Batman v. Superman."</a><div type="image" title="wonder woman batman v superman" height="921" width="2260" msid="75184746" hostid="261"></div>In his book, "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Ride-Lifetime-Lessons-Learned-Company/dp/0399592091">The Ride of a Lifetime,</a>" then-Disney CEO Bob Iger, said he had faced roadblocks from Marvel Comics in getting both "Black Panther" and "Captain Marvel" to screen. In the book, Iger recalled someone from the Marvel team in New York telling him that "female superheroes never drive big box office." Fast forward and "Wonder Woman" succeeded in 2017 grossing <a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt0451279/?ref_=bo_se_r_1">over $821 million worldwide</a>. 2018's "Captain Marvel" <a href="https://www.indiewire.com/2019/03/captain-marvel-box-office-opening-weekend-1202049967/">exceeded expectations with a massive opening weekend</a> and again by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/movies-to-make-1-billion-at-2018-box-office-jurassic-world-infinity-war-2018-7">crossing $1 billion at the box office</a>. For the first time, five of 2020's superhero movies were to be headlined by multiple women, not men. <h2>These films will now be forced to open within a packed schedule and compete with each other</h2>Movies that were set to be sprawled out across an entire year will, in many cases, be released within a few weeks of one another and their box-office opportunity will shrink along with it. Many of these movies won't only be competing against each other, but will be competing for eyeballs and money against other new releases that were already set for the fall and for next year. Assuming the current release schedule remains the same, there's only one week between the release of Christopher Nolan's next event film "Tenet" and Disney's "Mulan" remake. Three weeks later, "Wonder Woman 1984" will be in theaters. Another three weeks later, we get "A Quiet Place Part II." "Black Widow" will compete with WB's "Godzilla" sequel two weeks after its release November 6.<div type="image" title="tenet release vs mulan" height="600" width="1200" msid="75184750" hostid="261"></div>There are <a href="https://www.firstshowing.net/schedule2020/">at least 21 movies set to debut in the last two months</a> of the year. In addition to pushed back films, big releases include "West Side Story," "Dune," "Godzilla Vs. Kong," and the sequels to "Top Gun" and "Coming to America." Any way you slice it, the fall — and November and December, especially — are going to be very crowded, tough months at the box office for any film to really stand out. And that's assuming that theaters will be reopening by then.When theaters do eventually reopen, these female-led films will face a different uphill climb as well. Will these movies even perform in the way they would have pre-pandemic? Industry experts predict this year's <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2020/04/13/us-box-office-headed-for-worst-year-since-1998.html">box office will have its worst year since 1998</a>. <h2>Even in a year where female-led films will most likely still dominate the box office, they'll still lose</h2>When the theaters do reopen, there are so many questions that could affect the success of movies. Will audiences even want to go to theaters and sit among strangers? Will they have the funds available? Will theaters be able to hold the same size crowds as before or will they limit the number of people, resulting in fewer box-office dollars? In China, <a href="https://variety.com/2020/film/news/china-cinemas-coronavirus-closures-1203538761/">theaters started reopening</a> before they were <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-china-orders-all-movie-theaters-to-close-again-2020-3">closed up again in late March</a>. In the US, <a href="https://www.insider.com/when-will-movie-theaters-reopen-masks-social-distancing-2020-4">theater executives and owners are desperate to reopen</a> and are struggling to figure out how to convince people to sit in the same room as strangers again. THIS WAS THE LAST TIME they would see blue sky together. What a lovely day it had turned out to be. When they awoke that morning in Fort Worth, the sky was seeping rain. Not pouring, mind you. It wasn't a hard rain that fell in Fort Worth, only a drear November rain that now seems an omen of tears to come. Everything always looks different in retrospect, and never more so than with the Kennedy assassination.
Had the rain continued, for example, the president's Secret Service agents would have shielded the passenger compartment of the presidential limousine with a protective glass covering that was used to keep rain off the ?rst couple. It wouldn't have stopped an assassin's bullet, but it might have obscured his view. Even if the rain had not subsided, the president would most likely have waved off the bubbletop, had he been on his own. He thrived on direct contact with the crowds that turned out to see him and would not have minded a drenching if it granted him more eye-to-eye engagement.
It would not do, however, for the ?rst lady to get soaked. Spectators who turned out for the presidential motorcade, as eager to gape at her as at her husband, would have been disappointed if she were partially hidden from sight by the rain-de?ecting bubbletop. But Jackie's hair, her makeup, her elegant clothing-in a word, her image-were not meant for inclement weather. Or so, apparently, the president thought, and thus, had the rain continued, he probably would have agreed to the use of the bubbletop.
By the time they got to Dallas, the sky had dried its eyes. The day smiled upon them.
 
LIFE'S FULL-PAGE COLOR PHOTO depicting the presidential couple arrive at Love Field opens the magazine's coverage of the assassination. The rest of the pictures in the report are in black and white, as if the very colors of human life, not to mention happiness, had bled out of them. Blurry enlargements from the 8-millimeter Zapruder film, they look like smudges on the page.
In contrast, the Love Field arrival shot, taken by the Veteran Life photographer Arthur Rickerby, seems larger than life - vividly colored, crisply focused, it fills the page. The Kennedys look tall and vibrant. They come so close to the photographic picture plane that they seem within our reach, giants among us. Life's editors clearly intended Rickerby's photo as a resplendent, magical, wonderful before to the drab, dismal, and violent after in what turned out to be the best-selling issue of the magazine in its ?fty-some-year history.
It is impossible to look at this image with a historically innocent eye. It comes to us today, as it did to viewers in 1963, replete with the poignancy of the conditional. The principals in the photograph, frozen in history, are forever poised on the precipice, about to suffer-he to die, she to scream-and Lyndon Johnson, that minor bumbling character who can be seen bending over behind Jackie, about to become the most powerful man in the world.
The photograph has the formal density of a carefully constructed painting. It is ?lled with intriguing visual symmetries and repetitions. Consider, for example, how the notched lapel of the ?rst lady's suit echoes that of her husband's, but more loosely and expansively, or how the stripes of his shirt connect to the broad blue stripe on the jet and the stripes of the ?ag, as well as to the piping on her suit and the subtle striped pattern in its warp and weft. Note, too, how the geometric pattern of his necktie, with its neat rows of rounded rectangles, harmonizes with the bouclé fabric of her wool jacket as well as with the row of porthole windows on the jet and the three zeroes of the plane's call number lined up beneath the ?ag. The president's pocket handkerchief, the vice president's white carnation, and the ?rst lady's white glove form an inverted triangle, compactly framing her. Particularly delicate is the way husband and wife ?eetingly touch arms, his hand going one way, hers the other. Regardless of its original journalistic purpose and subsequent historical signi?cance, the Rickerby pho- tograph stands on its own as a richly complex visual artifact.
The accompanying text from Life commences, "Now in the sunny freshness of a Texas morning, with roses in her arms and luminous smile on her lips, Jacqueline Kennedy still had one hour to share the buoyant surge of life with the man at her side." Here is that sense of the conditional I mentioned that is the staple of legends about heroes, saints, and martyrs. Life's designers laid out the opening two pages of the re- port so that Jack, on the far left, seems almost to look past Jackie to the facing page, on which an uncaptioned black-and-white photo shows a bouquet of white roses aban- doned on the back seat of the vice president's car. The direction of his gaze, as in Re- naissance paintings, establishes a before-and-after narrative: triumphal entry of the hero on one side and on the other, as if he alone foresees it, a melancholy emblem of his imminent martyrdom.
Mrs. Kennedy carries a bouquet of red roses. Apparently all the local ?orists were sold out of yellow roses because of the many Democratic festivities planned. (The yellow rose is popularly associated with Texas, though the state ?ower is the bluebonnet.) Red was the next-best color available for welcoming the ?rst lady. Lady Bird Johnson, the vice president's wife, and Nellie Connally, the governor's wife, according to William Manchester, received white roses. Life shows one of those bouquets left behind in the vice president's car; the other (whose roses look yellow, not white, despite Manchester's account) can be seen in the Zapruder ?lm ?ying out of Mrs. Connally's arms when the president's head shatters.
Red roses have a long-standing tradition. Since the Middle Ages they have signi?ed the spilling of holy blood, the martyrdom of a saint. Although it was pure happenstance that Mrs. Kennedy received red roses instead of yellow, and though no one at Love Field, including the photographer, had any idea what was to take place a mere eight miles away, in retrospect-the only way in which anyone has ever viewed this photo-it prophesies death to come. It is a modern-day equivalent to a late Gothic or early Renaissance painting such as Stefan Lochner's Madonna in the Rose Garden (1450) or Martin Schongauer's Madonna and Child in a Rose Arbor (1473), both of which count on the viewer to invest the lovely red ?owers on display with a sense of the mortal tragedy to unfold. Although the roses in the photograph in no way predicted the assassination, they have given that photo a sense of ineluctable tragedy, conferring on John Kennedy, whose political ratings were slipping, a beati?c aura he did not possess at the time of his death.

Indeed, under normal circumstances an alternative cultural signi?cation would have emerged from the photo. From ancient Rome to the Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena each New Year's Day, roses have also been a sign of victory, pride, and triumph. That meaning is still visible in the Love Field photograph but inevitably tinged with a sad or bitter irony.
