The <keyword id="19903456" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Income-Tax-department" source="keywords">Income Tax department</keyword> on Wednesday said 'substantial <keyword id="20138064" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="tax-savings" source="keywords">tax savings</keyword>' are expected for a vast majority of taxpayers due to reduction in the <keyword id="22526761" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="long-term-capital-gains" source="keywords">long term capital gains</keyword> <keyword id="45031" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tax" source="Orion">tax</keyword> (LTCG) rate in the <keyword id="19895040" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="real-estate" source="keywords">real estate</keyword> sector. The Budget has reduced tax rates on capital gains earned from sale of house properties held for long term, but has removed the <keyword id="22142879" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indexation-benefit" source="keywords">indexation benefit</keyword> available to taxpayers. The LTCG has been reduced from 20 per cent with indexation benefit to 12.5 per cent without indexation for the real estate sector. The indexation benefit allowed taxpayers to compute gains arising out of sale of <keyword id="801267" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capital-assets" source="Orion">capital assets</keyword> after adjusting inflation. In a post on X, the income tax department said the nominal real estate returns are generally in the region of 12-16 per cent per annum, much higher than inflation. "The indexation for inflation is in the region of 4-5 per cent, depending on the period of holding. Therefore, substantial tax savings are expected to a vast majority of such taxpayers," it said. Giving a comparison of benefits based on the holding period of the real estate property, the I-T department said the new <keyword id="22422932" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tax-rate" source="keywords">tax rate</keyword> without indexation is beneficial in most cases. For property held for five years, the new regime is beneficial when property has appreciated 1.7 times or more, while for a property held for 10 years, it is beneficial when the value has increased 2.4 times or more. For a property purchased in 2009-10, if value has increased to 4.9 times or more, it is beneficial, it said. "From the above examples, it is clear that only where returns are low (less than about 9-11 per cent per annum) that the earlier tax rate is beneficial, but such low returns in real estate are unrealistic and rare," the I-T department said. As per the changes brought in the 2024-25 Budget, the government has retained the indexation benefit for taxpayers on properties bought or inherited before 2001. The changes in the tax rate have been made effective from July 23, 2024.

There were huge protests on social media and in business events in cities like Mumbai where professionals came out spontaneously to protest, he said. This is a victory to the 7 crore people that file income tax," he said. "But this is not enough. At the other end of the segment, anyone earning more than ₹2 crore annually will be subject to 35% tax rate instead of 30%. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is all set to announce the <keyword id="8192304" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="union-budget-2020">Union Budget 2020</keyword>. She will have to balance a billion expectations with a slowing economy - compounded by high inflation, and job crisis. The individual taxpayers too have a set of grievances they want the government to address. 1.Increase tax break under section 80C One of the first expectations that Indian taxpayers keep with the government is to “increase the threshold limit under sec 80C, minimum from ₹1.5 to ₹3L,” says <a href="https://twitter.com/MansiMenda/status/1222790722878750720">Mansi Menda, tax payer. </a> Under section 80C, an individual is allowed a maximum deduction of ₹1.5 lakh from the total gross income with respect to the sum paid or deposited in specified schemes. If this is increased, taxpayers would be able to save more and pay less income tax. 2. Higher medical insurance tax exemption Under section 80D of the Income Tax Act, a taxpayer is allowed to claim a tax deduction of up to ₹25,000 per budgetary year for medical insurance premium. However, the citizens would have their ears and hopes on Sitaraman’s speech to remove the current limit and allow the redemption of actual premium paid. Since insurance premiums are <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/wealth/personal-finance-news/hike-in-tax-sop-for-health-insurance-premium-sought-in-budget-2020/articleshow/73470799.cms">expected </a>to go up, it will help taxpayers save on tax, and have more left for other expenses. 3. Higher-income tax exemption limit One of the most significant expectations a taxpayer keeps from the “Budget 2020 is to increase the income tax exemption limit from ₹2.5 lakh to at least ₹5 lakh”. The change in the tax slab was also proposed in the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/what-to-expect-from-budget-2019/articleshow/70081590.cms">last Budget</a> but was not implemented in the current financial year. However, the people have proposed again to increase the tax exemption limit in the coming financial year. 4. Deduction in the Tax rate of Long Term Capital Gain <h2 style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;"></h2>In 2018, the late finance minister Arun Jaitley imposed a 10% long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax imposed on profit above ₹1 lakh. The industry experts expect the government to scrap or deduct the tax rate on long term capital gains. This would help investors save tax on the extra income that has come in from stock holdings and other sources. 5. Eradication of Dividend distribution tax The DDT is the levied tax on the company’s dividends distributed from the company’s profit. The company’s pay DDT up to 20% on its profit and at a later stage if the income exceeds ₹10 lakhs per annum then they have to pay 10% income tax. The abolition of taxes will result in higher distribution of dividends will encourage more companies to give dividends, helping investors gain more. 6. Home loan/ Personal loan As interest rates are on the rise and consumer confidence is at a low, the realty sectors and home buyers seek more tax relief from the government. “Ma’m kindly consider restoring tax rebates on the interest of ongoing home loans,” says <a href="https://twitter.com/InvestIndia6/status/1209334758846525441?s=20">Yash</a>, who has been paying the home loan for the last 20 years. 7. New Delhi, Jan 31 () A cut in personal income tax, sops for rural and agriculture sectors as well as an aggressive push on infrastructure spending are likely to be part of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's "feel-good" second Budget.
 Facing the worst economic slowdown in more than a decade, Sitharaman is expected to pull out all stops to spur consumer demand and investment, government sources and economists said.
 Sitharaman's second Budget, to be presented on February 1, is expected to announce measures to restore economic growth and to set out a clear road map for achieving the ambitious target of USD 5 trillion economy by 2025.
 Investments have failed to pick up despite corporate tax cuts and other stimulus measures, higher FDI inflows, plans to consolidate state-owned banks and monetary easing.
 After corporate tax cuts in September last year, speculation is rife about possible reduction in personal income taxes. A combination of an increase in the basic exemption limit and/or the introduction of a differentiated tax rate structure for higher incomes may be on the cards.
 To cushion the impact on collections, these tweaks might be accompanied by rationalisation in tax rebates.
 "The government announced a slew of stimulus measures in the last four months but consumer confidence is missing. Not many are eager to take loans to buy homes or cars fearing the worst. The feel good factor in the economy is missing," a senior government source said.
 "I think the Budget will be a feel-good Budget that will try to restore faith in the economy and spur spending and investments," the source said.
 With disbursements under the PM-Kisan scheme to farmers being less than the budgeted amount, the Budget may also see measures to get states to onboard more eligible farmers under the scheme.
 Also, there would be announcements for sectors such as renewable energy, e-vehicle, power, affordable housing, real estate, and exports, they said.
 Financial markets are expecting relief on Securities Transaction Tax (STT), Long Term Capital Gains Tax (LTCG) and removal of dividend tax.
 Capital infusion in public sector banks and liquidity measures for Non-Banking Finance Companies (NBFC) may also be on the horizon.
 Both the government sources and the economists felt the Budget would reaffirm the focus on infrastructure spending after the rollout of an ambitious National Infra Pipeline (NIP) in December.
 Social sector schemes such as rural electrification, MGNREGA, healthcare, education and skill training may also find mention in the Budget.
 However, all such measures would come at the cost of fiscal slippage.
 The Economic Survey for 2019-20, released on Friday, has already laid the ground by suggesting to the government to keep the focus on reviving growth and letting go of fiscal discipline a bit.
 The RBI, armed with a favourable inflation backdrop, defended slowdown risks last year with 110 basis points cut in interest rates. As it puts a brake on the easing cycle, due to an unseasonal spurt in food prices leading to above-target inflation, the ball is in the government's court to revive growth.
 Sitharaman would have to do a balancing between efforts to boost growth and the need for fiscal restraint. Economists expect a slight policy tilt towards prioritising growth.
 Real GDP growth is estimated to fall to an 11-year low of 5 per cent in FY20 from 6.1 per cent in FY19. Estimated nominal growth at 7.5 per cent in FY20 is the lowest since 1975-76 (FY76) as per the FY12-based GDP series.
 IIP growth turned positive but remained low at 1.8 per cent in November 2019 after contracting by (-) 4 per cent in October 2019.
 CPI inflation increased to a 65-month high of 7.4 per cent in December 2019, its fifth sequential rise, mainly due to persistently rising vegetable prices.
