In a major setback to Delhi's <keyword id="19935664" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aam-Aadmi-Party" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Aam Aadmi Party" meta.hostid="345" meta.entityid="Aam Aadmi Party">Aam Aadmi Party</keyword> government, the <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Supreme Court" meta.hostid="345" meta.entityid="Supreme Court">Supreme Court</keyword> on Monday ruled that the law "expressly enables" the lieutenant governor to nominate <keyword id="22669982" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aldermen" source="keywords">aldermen</keyword> to the <keyword id="19900879" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mcd" source="keywords">MCD</keyword> and he is not bound by the advice of the council of ministers in the matter. A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala rejected the <keyword id="19925995" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-government" source="keywords">Delhi government</keyword>'s plea challenging the LG's power to nominate 10 aldermen in the <keyword id="19907640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Municipal-Corporation-of-Delhi" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Municipal Corporation of Delhi" meta.hostid="345" meta.entityid="Municipal Corporation of Delhi">Municipal Corporation of Delhi</keyword> without the aid and advice of the council of ministers. The apex court pronounced its verdict on the Delhi government's plea after reserving it for nearly 15 months. In its ruling impacting the fraught relationship between the LG's office and the AAP-led Delhi government, the bench said the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act as amended in 1993 "expressly enables the LG to nominate persons having special knowledge to the corporation". It said the power expressed by the statute in the name of the LG, also seen in the context of other provisions, demonstrates the statutory scheme in which the powers and duties are distributed among authorities under the Act. "The context in which the power is located confirms that the LG is intended to act as per the mandate of the statute and not guided by the aid and advice of the council of ministers. The power to be exercised is the statutory duty of the LG and not the executive power of the state. This is how we analysed the constitutional provisions," Justice Narasimha said while pronouncing the verdict on behalf of the bench. The bench said the statutory power under provision 3(3)(b)(1) which deals with nomination of persons having special knowledge was vested with the LG for the first time by the 1993 amendment of the DMC Act of 1957. The bench said the DMC Act as amended in 1993 recognises five authorities exercising the state's power and duties under the Act -- these are the Central government, the government of NCT, administrator, corporation and the commissioner. It said the amendment Act of 1993 carries out several amendments to the original DMC Act of 1957 by which the power, duties were allocated to the authorities depending on the function they perform under the law. The bench said by way of the amendment the power of nomination of aldermen was given to LG under the provision just like the power of nomination of MLAs was given to the speaker of the House. On May 17 last year, the top court had said that giving the LG the power to nominate aldermen to the MCD will mean he can destabilise an elected civic body. The MCD has 250 elected and 10 nominated members. In December 2022, the Aam Aadmi Party defeated the <keyword id="19894848" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BJP" meta.hostid="345" meta.entityid="BJP">BJP</keyword> in the civic elections, winning 134 wards and ending the saffron party's 15-year run at the helm of the MCD. The BJP won 104 seats and the Congress finished a distant third with nine. Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for the Delhi government, had contended during the hearing that no separate powers have been accorded to the state government to nominate people to the MCD. For the past 30 years, the practice of the LG nominating aldermen on the aid and advice of the city government has been followed, he said. Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain, appearing for the LG's office, submitted that just because a practice has been followed for 30 years does not mean it is correct. The top court had observed that giving the LG the power to nominate aldermen will effectively mean that he can destabilise a democratically elected MCD because these aldermen get appointed to the standing committees and have voting power. Earlier, the top court had questioned the "source of power" of the LG under the Constitution and the law to nominate aldermen to the MCD without the aid and advice of the elected government. On May 12 last year, the top court observed that LG has to act on the "aid and advice" of the council of ministers of the Delhi government in nominating 10 aldermen to the MCD.

LG unveils new Gram range laptops in India

LG Electronics India celebrated its 18th anniversary today with its LG Life’s Good Happiness Study. 
 
The Korean electronics brand arrived in the country in January 1997, and has expanded its products base to segments across consumer electronics, IT hardware and mobile communications. 
 
The event was graced by Managing Director Soon Kwon, Chief Marketing Officer Niladri Datta and TV Star Mandira Bedi. 
 
“We believe in making consumer experience more seamless and enjoyable. There’s a continuous endeavor from our side to innovate, and design products Indians love”, Niladri Datta, Corporate Marketing Head, LG Electronics India said.

LG Electronics just turned eighteen in India

New Delhi, Mar 31 () To help authorities and people increase preparedness against Covid-19, electronic majors Samsung and LG have pledged to offer products and protective equipment like surgeon gown, face masks, glove, refrigerators, water purifiers, among others, to hospitals. LG Electronics India on Tuesday said it has also partnered with Akshaya Patra Foundation to sponsor one million meals to migrant labourers and daily wage workers, who are struggling amid the 21-day lockdown in the country. "With the rise in confirmed cases of COVID-19, LG has taken a pledge to support India's fight against the pandemic. LG is committed to offer active support to people in need in this current situation," it said in a statement. LG Electronics India will donate products like water purifiers, air conditioners, refrigerators and TVs to the hospitals for their quarantine/isolation wards, covering 50 state and district hospitals across the country. Samsung India, on the other hand, will provide preventive kits to hospitals, which includes a surgeon gown, face mask, gloves, preventive eye wear, hood cap and shoe cover. It will also provide infra-red thermometers and public addressal systems that can be used by the authorities at hospitals and other facilities, along with air purifiers in medical facilities. The India unit of Samsung said it will also support local police by providing cooked food packets to local communities around its manufacturing facility. "Samsung is committed to work together with the people of India in this hour of difficulty. Over the last few days, our teams have engaged round-the-clock with various governments, local authorities, and healthcare professionals to prepare a broad and meaningful strategy to win this battle together," Samsung India in a statement. COVID-19 infection, which originated in Wuhan in China, has spread across the world and claimed around 34,000 lives. Countries like South Korea, Spain, Italy, Iran and the US have been badly hit. In India, the total number of COVID-19 cases has risen to 1,251, while the death toll touched 32. To combat the spread, the government had announced a 21-day lockdown that ends on April 14. Corporate India has been rushing in to help the government and citizens fight the covid-19 pandemic in India. Tata Trusts &amp; Tata group together have pledged Rs 1,500 crore - by far the highest by any corporate. Reliance Industries chief Mukesh Ambani has also committed a further Rs 500 crore to the Prime Minister's COVID-19 fund, topping up over the multi-crore initiative of India's first coronavirus hospital, meals to the needy, and fuel to emergency vehicles. Infosys Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Infosys, has committed Rs 100 crore, while a number of other companies are also extending support efforts towards fighting COVID-19 in India. "In these precarious and uncertain times, LG India believes in helping and supporting the Government &amp; citizen of India with a meaningful contribution. Our initiative is designed to help those in need and contribute to society, at this critical juncture in a positive way. The plane, a single engine Socata TBM 700, is registered to a company called NEW 51LG LLC. As <a href="http://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/news/2014/09/05/norad-fighter-jets-escorting-business-plane-naples/15132465/">the Democrat &amp; Chronicle newspaper reported</a>, NEW 51LG LLC, is housed at the <a href="http://appext20.dos.ny.gov/corp_public/CORPSEARCH.ENTITY_INFORMATION?p_nameid=2151276&amp;p_corpid=2096416&amp;p_entity_name=Buckingham%20Properties&amp;p_name_type=A&amp;p_search_type=BEGINS&amp;p_srch_results_page=0">address of Buckingham Properties' headquarters in Rochester</a>. 
According <a href="http://www.buckprop.com/team/">to Buckingham Properties' website</a>, the company owns and manages "more than 60 properties." It is led by its co-founder, CEO, and managing partner Larry Glazer.
Business Insider has made multiple calls and emails to Buckingham to confirm whether the plane is owned by the company and ask if any staffers were on board. We have not received a response.

The most innovative company in the world - as ranked by patents - isn't actually Apple

The Indian <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=economy">economy</a> has emerged as one of the fastest growing <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=economy">economies</a> in the world and to sustain this momentum going forward, there are slew of economic reforms required. The need of the hour is to strengthen the image of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Brand+India">Brand India</a> and establish the country as an investor friendly destination. 
 
In the forthcoming <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Budget+2016">Budget</a>, the Government should introduce policies that encourage <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=local+manufacturing">local manufacturing</a> of durables which in turn, will increase the penetration of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=consumer+durables">consumer durables</a> in India. 
 · <keyword id="2560906" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Make-in-India">Make-in-India</keyword> must be incentivized for Indian products to be competitive in the global markets and this must be supported by the development of world class <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=infrastructure">infrastructure</a> specially ports, railways, roads, and warehouses. 
 
· Strong agricultural reforms are required to turn around rural economies thereby boosting rural demand. 
 · Tax reforms implementation should include a fast roll out of <keyword id="6354679" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="GST">GST</keyword> so as to have an equitable tax system and a unified market which, in turn, can improve efficiency and competitiveness. 
 
· <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Excise+duty">Excise duty</a> should be brought down from 12% to 10% to help reinstate demand and growth. 
 · With reference to corporate tax, in the last <keyword id="6358021" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="budget">budget</keyword> the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Excise+duty">Finance Minister</a> had proposed the reduction in corporate tax rate from 30% to 25% in four years; in Budget 2016 we expect a reduction in corporate tax rate as well as the future roadmap. 
 
· Relaxation in personal income tax slabs will certainly increase disposable income which, we are optimistic, will spur a segment of people to spend on upgrading their <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=consumer+durables">consumer durables</a>.

LG India Marketing Head on what the sector wants from Budget 2016

Lee</div></div></div>Samsung has taken the top spot in a ranking of companies sorted by how many US patents they were granted in 2016.Sqoop is an online service that tracks patents and court documents, and <a href="https://sqoop.com/blog/2017-01-10-most-inventive-companies-of-2016-based-on-patent-activity">the site has published its ranking of companies</a> according to how many patents they were granted and applied for in 2016.The 2016 ranking has one major difference to the 2015 list (<a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/most-innovative-company-not-apple-2015-6">which you can read here</a>): Samsung has taken the top spot from IBM.In 2016, Samsung was granted 8,551 patents, compared to IBM's 8,062.IBM, however, is disputing this ranking. A press release published by the company on January 9 claimed that IBM was granted 8,088 patents in 2016. It said that Samsung was granted just 5,518.The discrepancy in numbers comes from the different methods that IBM and Sqoop used to count patents. IBM used data from patent tracking firm IFI Claims, which doesn't collate patents under one company. The accused persons had got the tenders of the said project. As per allegations huge money was paid as bribe to get the project.
