Another day, we went for a swim at a public beach in Monopoli. We did two long drives to Matera and Lecce, and both times were rewarded for our efforts with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/torre-guinigi-italian-tower-photos-2024-7">stunning architecture</a> and history.We had leisurely lunches at local restaurants. By arriving at restaurants when they opened for lunch, we never had trouble getting a table big enough for all of us.We had breakfast and dinner at our rental, which meant a few <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/travel-far-to-shop-lidl-italy-best-things-to-buy-2023">trips to the supermarket</a> but saved us money and allowed us to try local produce.Breakfast was serve yourself and clean up after yourself, which worked. Dinner was done on a rotation, as was setting the table and cleaning up. Dinner at home made for much more relaxed dinners. No one had to worry about what they drank or about driving home on the "wrong side" of the road on poor roads with no street lighting. We had a big outdoor setting, and we had slow dinners and chatted. Sometimes, we played family quizzes.On a couple of nights, we went indoors after dinner and had a "family movie" night. One night, it was "Gladiator." Most of us had seen it, but it was fun to watch it together in Italy.We laughed, we ate, we drank, we played games, we swam — it was divine.<h2 id="18c1a9ae-e20c-46d7-bcdc-426b7ad8510c">It wasn't perfect, but it was absolutely worth it</h2>It was so worth traveling with our adult kids — or Kiddults as we sometimes tease them that they are. As the ad goes, it was priceless.Was it perfect? No. But families aren't perfect, and every relationship involves compromise.For Andrew and me, sharing adult time with our kids and their partners without the distraction of work and rushing was wonderful. It will not be much longer before another generation joins our family (we can't wait to be grandparents!), but babies will change everything. Andrew and I really appreciated this time as a group of adults.It was also lovely to observe our adult kids interact with their siblings and their partners. All you want as a parent is happy, healthy children, and to see them all happy and healthy basking in the Italian sun was joyful beyond words.Two of the kids are back home in Melbourne already, one will return home next week and one at the end of August. When we're all back in Melbourne, we'll make pasta and reminisce about our wonderful Puglian holiday. That time when we all got gastro!Our bond as a family unit is that much tighter :) There's no price that can be paid for that.

Marcus Rashford had given United the lead early on, before Liverpool was denied a Sadio Mane equalizer thanks to a VAR (Video Assistant Referee) call for handball. Thankfully for Jurgen Klopp's side, substitute Adam Lallana saved the day with just five minutes to go.Elsewhere, Chelsea continued its impressive start to the season with a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Newcastle United - Frank Lampard's side managed 15 shots on goal before it finally found the net through Marcos Alonso.Manchester City kept up the pressure on Liverpool with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, while Tottenham Hotspur's dreadful form continued with a 1-1 draw with Watford.It could have been worse for Spurs had it not been for a controversial goal from Dele Alli, who appeared to handle the ball before slotting it home.<h2>La Liga</h2>FC Barcelona was the weekend's big winner in Spain as it beat Eibar 3-0 to jump into first place in the league. <ul class="summary-list"><li>All-property buyouts, where one family or group rents out every single room, gained new urgency — and appeal — during the pandemic-constrained summer season.</li><li>From inns on the coast of Maine to island resorts, buyouts presented an appealing option to travelers looking to minimize their exposure to others.</li></ul>It was only supposed to be a week-long trip away from New York City for Dan Bassichis.In mid-March, the divorced private equity exec had taken his two daughters skiing in Vermont. But as the pandemic worsened, Bassichis decided to work remotely and rented a house nearby. He chose a house large enough that it had room to create an extended family bubble and invited not only his ex-wife and her new husband to join them, but also the man's ex-wife and their two sons.When the rental period expired, the pandemic-era family unit didn't want to come back to the city. Instead, they started looking for an alternative in the country, ideally somewhere with a few more services and convenience – like a <keyword id="18966" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hotel">hotel</keyword>. Not content to rent a room or a large suite, though, Bassichis opted to buy out an entire property.And that's how the group came to turn the Cape Arundel Inn in Kennebunkport, Maine, into their own vacation home a short stroll from the Bush family compound on Walker's Point.<div type="image" title="Cape Arundel Inn Resort" height="1666" width="2222" msid="78336778" hostid="261"></div>The hotel has 24 rooms that stretch across three buildings on the site. Bassichis rented the main, seven-room building; his extended bubble of family and friends took over the other two houses and their 17 rooms. The combined rental for all three came out to $23,200 per week, or $86,000 per month."None of us want to be in a hotel with other guests, so sharing a place with other people that we know and trust is perfect, so taking over an inn is the ideal family vacation," Bassichis told Business Insider. That was several months ago. "This has replaced all of our summer trips and also their summer camps. We have tried our best to make the best out of the situation and make this a fun and memorable summer. And since we are a blended, divorced family, the inn gave us all some space, while still being together with our kids."<h2>Hotel owners can quickly reconfigure their properties for buyouts</h2>Hotel buyouts aren't a new idea: For weddings, for instance, smaller properties have long been dragooned into hosting the ceremony and guests alike. But all-property buyouts, where one family or group rents out every single room, have gained new urgency — and appeal — during the pandemic-constrained summer season. The trend holds especially true for upscale travelers like Bassichis.Justin Grimes is managing director of the group that owns the <a href="https://capearundelinn.com/">Cape Arundel Inn</a> and several other boutique properties nearby, the Kennebunkport <keyword id="21459" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Resort">Resort</keyword> Collection. Grimes says that the decision to offer buyouts this year was spurred, in part, by former guests. He began receiving calls about buyouts in the spring, before the hotel had even considered how to handle opening for the season; it had shuttered, as usual, over the winter.<div type="image" title="Cape Arundel Inn Main House Junior Suite Heidi Kirn" height="1666" width="2222" msid="78336779" hostid="261"></div>It was quickly evident that promoting buyouts would be the best way to approach summer 2020."We wanted to help offer additional accommodation options for those trying to distance themselves from dense, multi-family urban settings, as well as try to provide an opportunity for some of our staff to stay employed," he told Business Insider. His team made some adjustments to the property to better suit Bassichis and his extended family: They converted the front desk into a business center with desks and printers and added residential gadgets to the commercial kitchen so the family could cook its own meals.Grimes doesn't foresee a return to conventional operations soon. Instead, he is planning to focus on buyouts through the fall. The concept might even offer opportunities beyond the conventional summer season: "We are also considering extending the buyout option for this winter, when the hotel is traditionally closed."<h2>From villas to resorts, buyouts are the focus for hospitality this summer</h2>The Cape Arundel Inn isn't an outlier. Many upscale boutique hotels have followed the same strategy throughout the summer or even the entire year. Take <a href="https://www.duntondestinations.com/hot-springs/">Dunton Hot Springs in Colorado</a>. The 12-cabin village in the Rockies has room for 44 people; it now offers buyouts, renting the entire town for $31,000 per night, with a three-night minimum. Or consider Within the Wild, which operates adventure lodges in Southcentral Alaska; those are now available starting at $60,000 per property for three nights – a program the owners dubbed <a href="https://withinthewild.com/lodges/private-lodging/">Your Own Private Wilderness</a>.If you have $250,000 to spare (and an enormous extended family) you could take over the <a href="https://carnerosresort.com/">Carneros Resort and Spa</a> in Wine Country, which has more than 100 rooms and two pools on its 28-acre site. Overseas, smaller family groups could consider the eight-room <a href="https://www.trapana.com/en/">Masseria Trapana</a>.<div type="image" title="Masseria Trapana" height="456" width="609" msid="78336780" hostid="261"></div>One of the toniest hotels in Italy's new jetset favorite, Puglia, it is only available on a buyout basis through April 2021. Dior just rented it out for super-influencer Chiara Ferragni when it staged its cruise show in nearby Lecce – a steal at €14,500 per week (around $17,100).<h2>'In a buyout, you'll never have to risk interacting with any other guests'</h2>Island hotels are also an option for guests seeking sunny seclusion — and willing to pay for it.Consider the British Virgin Islands' <a href="https://www.guana.com/stay/rent-the-island/">Guana Island</a>, which is reopening in October and offers 42 guests the option of self-isolating in barefoot luxury starting at $23,500 per night.Meanwhile, 69-year Foster Reed, a retired musician from New York's Hudson Valley, plans to take his family and some friends to <a href="https://goldenrocknevis.com/home.htm">Golden Rock Inn</a> later this year. Buyouts for the Nevis island resort currently start at $2,860 per night for 22 guests. His neighbors, artists Brice and Helen Marden, just so happen to own the place.<div type="image" title="GRI_Courtyard2_16" height="1603" width="2137" msid="78336781" hostid="261"></div>"We were looking for a small place to host my wife's 50th birthday and to celebrate the election," Reed told Business Insider. "It could have been a buyout of a small ranch, or some houses on the Mendocino Coast, but the idea of Golden Rock won out."Andrei Mocanu is the hotel's general manager alongside his wife Antonia. The idea to offer it as a buyout came to him as the lockdown began in mid-March, and two guests — a doctor from New York and his girlfriend – asked to stay on property for a while. Their request was approved, and they went on to spend six nights on property, clocking up a bill at check-out of $3,600. "It was just like a buyout for them: The chef would offer to cook them anything they wanted, and they had a dedicated butler," Mocanu explained. The hotel was locked down soon after the doctor and his girlfriend left, so Mocanu moved on property with his wife and son.Mocanu and his wife said it's not hard to see how the estate, a former sugar plantation hidden amid lush vegetation on the top of a hill, would be appealing for a self-contained group. "In a post-COVID world, people are going to want to <keyword id="6354692" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> more with their friends and family, because they trust them," he explained. "In a buyout, you'll never have to risk interacting with any other guests, or anyone who might have the disease."Now, the GM has uploaded property tours to Instagram and is planning for a buyout-heavy winter season powered by guests like Foster Reed.<h2>The impact from taking over a hotel can be unexpected</h2>As for Bassichis, he's planning on camping out in a hotel buyout for several more weeks until his group's children need to return to NYC for school.Over the course of their stay, they became adroit at adapting the property to fit their needs, adding extra drawers to the bedrooms to store more clothes, installing a trampoline by the pool to allow kids to burn off energy, and even turning a corner of the dining room into an arts and crafts station. But after more than six weeks at the Cape Arundel Inn, their extended family bubble moved to a larger sister property, The Lodge on the Cove – again, on a buyout basis.Their stint as temporary residents in the area has made a lasting impact."I will definitely be taking my girls back to this town and the Cape Arundel Inn every summer going forward," Bassichis said. "We can't wait to eat at the restaurant when it opens to the public and see what it's like to stay at the inn with other people. We liked the experience so much that we might even come back with all of our divorced quarantine family, by choice."

How the pandemic made summer 2020 the summer of hotel buyouts for wealthy travelers

"It wasn't necessary when I was playing in England."Smalling spent nine seasons with Manchester United before being loaned to AS Roma in the summer, and in doing so, becoming only the second Englishman to ever play for the Serie A giant after Ashley Cole, who spent 18 months at the Stadio Olimpico between 2014 and 2016.While he is the only Englishman he is part of a cohort of former Premier League players - eight besides himself, exactly - at Roma this season.Among that clan are ex-Newcastle United defender Davide Santon, whom Smalling says has been a "really big help" in learning Italian, former Tottenham duo Pau Lopez and Federico Fazio, and Arsenal's Henrikh Mkhtiaryan, who like Smalling, is on loan for the season.Most interestingly is the presence of Edin Dzeko and Aleksandar Kolarov, both of whom used to play for City, and came up against Smalling as rivals on numerous occasions between 2010 and 2017.Smalling says that while they were once separated by 4.4 miles and a mutual disdain for each other's teams, they've now lay such differences aside."We haven't spoken too much about it!" Smalling said, thinking back to his former foes. "I think we might have laughed about it to start with, that we were obviously never that close when we were in Manchester."It's actually been great because I think it's enhanced our relationship in that they both played and lived in Manchester, and so have I, and now we are here. So I think it's been quite a good base for our relationship to grow."Dzeko and Kolarov are two of six players over the age of 30 in Roma's squad, the others being Diego Perotti, Nikola Kalinic, Federico Fazio, and Antonio Mirante - making it one of the oldest in the Italian top division.While manager Paulo Fonseca has plenty of experience on his side he also has an abundance of youth, with nine of the Portuguese manager's 23-man squad aged 23 or under.<h2>Smalling has been impressed by one youngster in particular</h2>"[Zaniolo] was someone I'd heard of before I came here," he said of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-40-best-young-footballers-in-world-soccer-right-now-2019-10?r=US&amp;IR=T">20-year-old Italy international</a>. "He's someone who is exceptionally talented, and he's going to come a long way in the game because he's not only very quick, but he's also very strong and direct."Smalling has also been excited by the talents of Dutch youngster and his dressing room neighbor Justin Kluivert, whom he believes, alongside Zaniolo, Dzeko, and Co., makes Roma an exciting prospect this term."I think with [Zaniolo] and Kluivert on either wing we've got a lot of attacking talent and can do some damage and score some goals."I've been very impressed with our squad, because I feel like we have a nice blend of older experienced players like Edin and Kolarov who have been at Roma for a number of years and achieved many things in the game, and young players too. So I do think we have a very good blend."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>So far, the jury's out on Roma's mix-and-match squad.Paulo Fonseca's men have been draw specialists this term, finishing level with its opponents in six of its 12 games in all competitions, winning the other five, and losing just one.<h2>But Smalling has quickly adapted quickly to Italian football</h2>In the five games he's played so far in Serie A, Smalling has won 100% of his tackles and completed 92% of the 282 passes he has attempted. He also boasts the <a href="https://twitter.com/WhoScored/status/1187723356277227521?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sportbible.com%2Ffootball%2Ffootball-news-stats-smalling-has-been-dribbled-past-less-than-van-dijk-this-season-20191029">"most aerial duels won per game"</a> in the division with an average of 5.8, and was awarded "Man of the Match" in only his second appearance as Roma beat Lecce 1-0.The Englishman said he has watched hours of video to learn the different runs of the division's strikers, and this has clearly paid off.However to maintain his brilliant start, Smalling must stay fit, something that has proved difficult over the past three seasons <a href="https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/chris-smalling/verletzungen/spieler/103427">having missed 29 games courtesy of a variety of injuries</a>, including tendinitis of the knee.To combat the problem, Smalling has gradually turned vegan - cutting out all meats, fish, eggs, and dairy products from his diet. It has helped him on and off the field, Smalling said."My tendinitis was one of the first things I heard that turning vegan could benefit," he said. "So that was the first stage of me reducing my red meat intake, and then i just eventually transitioned to plant-based over a year."Quite often in sports, you feel the second day after you'll be a little more sore. But I've found that I have been recovering a lot quicker, and the stats and the numbers from the different tests you do, at United and Roma, have proven that. Even without those tests, I feel better anyway, so I know it's working."Off the pitch in terms of high energy, in terms of my skin, and my sleep as well, they've all vastly improved."Maintaining said lifestyle in Italy, a country renowned for its pastas and pizzas, may sound difficult on paper, but Smalling says keeping up his strict diet has been far from difficult thanks to an abundance of local vegan restaurants around the country's capital, and AS Roma's in-house chefs."When I first moved over, I was staying in hotels and eating out, but I was lucky enough to find lots of different restaurants that were nearby."There was one I was often going to for lunch, it was called <a href="http://www.centopercento.bio/">"100% BIO"</a> that's an organic plant based restaurant, so it's all very healthy. The fact that I'm now in our house it means I can cook and just eat out as a treat, but it's a good thing that eating out is an option."In terms of the club, the first day that I signed, I saw the chefs straight away and they came out with different recipes and showed me how it was going to work, so I was quite impressed."It's not been a problem at all, so it's perfect."<h2>It started as a diet, now it's a passion</h2>Smalling credits his wife, Sam, with kick-starting his transition to a plant-based diet. However, as time has gone on, he's discovered a passion of his own that is already beginning to forge open a path to a post-football career.After researching into the controversies surrounding animal welfare in the leather industry, he invested in "Pinatex" manufacturing company, Ananas Anam.Pinatex, a pineapple leaf fibre, is a waste-product from the pineapple industry, and can be used to produce a variety of eco-friendly leather alternatives, most notably clothing and fashion accessories."Being involved in a company or a business is something I've always wanted to do, even before football actually. It's the route I would have gone down had I followed up my university course before I played professional football."So now for me to able to do that, and for it to be having such a positive impact on the world is almost perfect, because it's got my interests in spreading the positive message of sustainable products and my business interests."This is the first of many such companies I can hopefully get involved with, and post-football, its definitely going to be a large part of my life."At 29-years-old and having just begun the latest chapter in his footballing career however, Smalling has plenty of time left to worry about life after the game.His deal with Roma only lasts until the end of the season, and it so far remains unclear as to whether he is to return to Manchester United, remain in Italy, or perhaps find another challenge.For now however, its safe to say Smalling is enjoying the life he was forged for himself in his new home - so much so, he intends to keep up his daily Italian lessons so he can fully establish himself as a true Roman."Hopefully, come summer I'll be able to have good conversations," he said. About 122 people are still trapped in the Norman Atlantic, a Italian ferry which set on fire on early Sunday morning.
Rescuers are facing hard weather conditions to bring the passengers at safe.&#xa0;

Ships and helicopters fought choppy seas and strong winds through the night on Sunday in a race against time to rescue 281 passengers still left aboard Italian ferry the "Norman Atlantic".
The blaze, which sent huge clouds of smoke into the air, was said to have started on the ferry's car deck in the early hours when the vessel was some 44&#xa0;nautical miles northwest of the Greek island of Corfu.
"It's going to be a long night," Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said on Twitter.&#xa0;
By early morning Monday, a total of 197 passengers out of the 478 on board had been rescued, according to the Italian coast guard,&#xa0;as teams from Greece, Italy and Albania battled through the night.
Italian navy spokesman Riccardo Rizzotto said the weather was "so bad we need an extraordinary level of support" in the rescue operation.
The Spirit of Piraeus was expected in the Italian city of Brindisi on Monday at dawn with 49 survivors on board, including some 20 Greeks, according to a source close to the operation.&#xa0;
Athens said its army had sent a C-130 military transport plane to Lecce on Italy's southeastern heel to pick up Greeks who had escaped the flames.&#xa0;
Others were evacuated to hospitals near the city including a two-year-old Swiss boy, his four-year-old sister and their seven-months-pregnant mother, according to Italian media.
A Greek passenger who had fallen from an escape chute into the Adriatic Sea with his wife was found dead by Italian coastguards, despite repeated attempts at an air rescue amid six-metre (19.6-foot) waves.
His wife was safely plucked from the water and transferred to the Italian port of Brindisi.

<h3>'Burn like rats'</h3>
In desperate scenes earlier in the day, terrified passengers pleaded by&#xa0;mobile phone live on TV to be saved from the vessel, which was travelling from the Greek port of Patras to Ancona in Italy.
"I cannot breathe, we are all going to burn like rats -- God save us," cried one of the ship's cooks in a call to his wife, she told journalists.
Alongside rescue efforts by a flotilla of ships, including nearby merchant vessels, helicopters were slowly winching passengers to safety up to seven at a time.
The stricken vessel was reportedly some 40 nautical miles from Otranto in southern Italy and 13 nautical miles from Albania's coastline.
Italian authorities have mobilized four tugs to bring the Norman Atlantic to Brindisi once the passengers and are crew evacuated, although it may be moved to closer-by Albania if necessary.
As darkness fell, the Italian navy said that a tugboat, the Marietta Barretta, had finally been able to attach itself to the ferry, raising hopes it could be stabilised sufficiently to accelerate the evacuation.
Greek passenger Nikos Papatheodossiou told Mega television that the towed ship was moving at a speed of around "two to three (nautical) miles per hour".
Freezing passengers huddled on the top deck and bridge of the ship told of their terror in calls to Greek television stations.
"We are on the top deck, we are soaked, we are cold and we are coughing from the smoke. There are women, children and old people," passenger Giorgos Styliaras told Mega TV.
Another told the station that "our shoes were melting" from the heat of the fire when they were mustered in the ship's reception area.
Haulage company boss Giannis Mylonas, who was in contact with three of his drivers on the vessel, said there were between 20 and 25 tanker trucks filled with olive oil on board.&#xa0;
<h3>Ferry passed checks</h3>
Vessels close to the ferry, leased to Greek operator ANEK Lines, rushed to give assistance after picking up its distress signal at 0200 GMT, the Greek coast guard said.
The Greek maritime ministry said 268 of the passengers were Greek, with the crew made up of 22 Italians and 34 Greeks.&#xa0;
The rest of the passengers included 54 Turks, 44 Italians, 22 Albanians, 18 Germans as well as Swiss, French, Russian, Austrian, British and Dutch nationals.
The captain of the ferry was named as 62-year-old Italian Argilio Giacomazzi.
The "Norman Atlantic" left Patras at 1530 GMT on Saturday and made a stop at the Greek coastal town of Igoumenitsa, before heading to Ancona when the fire took hold.
The car deck of the Italian-flagged ferry, built in 2009, was believed to have been holding 195 vehicles when the fire broke out.
It remained unclear how the fire started.
Carlo Visentini, the chief executive of the Visenti Group which owns the boat, said the vessel underwent checks on December 19 in Patras and the minor flaws revealed had been addressed, including a problem with a fire door.
"This was immediately repaired to the satisfaction of the inspectors," he said.
