<keyword id="147780" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vedanta-group">Vedanta Group</keyword>'s owner <keyword id="6354819" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Anil-Agarwal">Anil Agarwal</keyword> is setting up the country's first LCD panel manufacturing plant in Maharashtra with an investment of $10 billion ( Rs 68,000 crore). 
 The investment is through a new company called Twinstar Display Technologies, which is promoted by holding company Volcano <keyword id="6362476" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="investments">Investments</keyword>, chairman Agarwal said in an exclusive interview with ET. The metals tycoon is set to sign a memorandum of understanding with Maharashtra government on the first day of '<keyword id="6354869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make in India</keyword>' week. 
 "All over the world you see Made in China electronics, but <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> can also manufacture its own electronics," Agarwal said. "We worked with the government and agreed this project has to be aMade in India product." Agarwal said the company will endeavour to make India a significant export hub of display units with the setting up of the unit, known as Panel FAB. India's LCD market is entirely import-dependent. 
 
Twinstar Display will invest $10 billion in five phases, and expected to begin production by 2018, with full capacity over the next 10 years. 
 
The plant will be set up in Pune or Nagpur. Although Twinstar Display is an independent company, it is being monitored by Vedanta's technology arm, Sterlite Technologies, till the time a full-fledged team takes over in the new company. The final structure of the company will be decided at a later date. 
 
Twinstar Display may look for an international strategic partner or collaborate on technology with companies abroad, Agarwal said. "This is the time to strike. This is the time to build your capacity because it will be cheaper. 
 
This is the time when people and talent are available," he said. The project is being set up under Maharashtra's new policy on fabrication units that aims to boost domestic manufacturing of electronics and reduce import bill.

Vedanta Group's Anil Agarwal to set up India's first LCD panel plant

Samsung Electronics is in talks with competitor <keyword id="135366" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="LG-Display">LG Display</keyword> for the purchase of display panels amid its transition to production of next-generation display. According to the sources, Samsung Electronics and LG Display may sign a deal on LCD TV panel supply in the near future, reports Yonhap News Agency. The move came after <keyword id="1487608" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung-Display">Samsung Display</keyword>, a display maker under Samsung Electronics, announced earlier this year that it will discontinue its LCD screen production from next year and will speed up its shift toward quantum-dot (QD) display. Industry insiders originally predicted that Samsung Electronics could buy LCD panels from Chinese firms, such as China Star Optoelectronics Technology and BOE Technology Group, as well as Sharp now owned by Taiwan's Foxconn Group. Analysts expect that LG Display's supply volume to be worth between 1 trillion (US$833 million) and 2 trillion won if the deal is secured. LG Display plans to supply large-size LCD panels from its plant in Guangzhou, China. Samsung and LG are rivals in the TV industry, with the former representing QLED TV and the latter spearheading OLED TV. However, history shows the two sides can work as partners. In 2017, Samsung Electronics received LCD screens for 65-inch and 75-inch TVs from LG Display after Sharp abruptly decided to cut its display supply. Samsung's future LCD TVs may have competitor LG's displays

Major display panel maker <keyword id="135366" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="LG-Display">LG Display</keyword> Co has swung to the black in the third quarter of the year on the back of <keyword id="475882" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="robust-demand">robust demand</keyword> for displays used in IT gadgets and increased shipments of large-size panels for <keyword id="62356" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="TVS">TVs</keyword> amid the pandemic-driven stay-at-home trend. The company chalked up a net profit of $9.8 million in the July-September period, shifting from a loss of 442.2 billion won a year earlier. It also logged an operating profit of 164.4 billion won in the third quarter, swinging from an operating loss of 436.7 billion won a year ago. Sales rose 15.7 percent to 6.73 trillion won over the cited period. This is the first time since the fourth quarter of 2018 that the company posted an operating profit. LG Display attributed the turnaround to increased supply of displays for IT products and plastic OLED panels for mobile devices, reports Yonhap news agency. Panels for IT products accounted for 43 percent of its revenue in the third quarter. TV panels accounted for 28 percent of its revenue, while mobile display products made up 29 percent of its sales. LG Display said it plans to double the shipment of large-size OLED panels in the second half of the year compared to the first half as operation of its Guangzhou plant is in full swing. The company aims to supply more than 7 million units of large-size OLED display panels next year. To cope with rising demand for panels for IT products, driven by the work-from-home trend and remote learning, the company said it will convert more of its LCD TV panel production lines to IT display manufacturing lines. LG Display said it expects the strong demand for IT panels to continue through the first half of 2021. LG Display logs profit in 2 years as IT gadgets, TVs demand soar

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">AP</div></div></div>The chairman of Foxconn, which assembles most of Apple's iPhones in China, gave <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/foxconn-mulls-7-billion-investment-to-build-u-s-factory-1485153535">some remarks at a holiday party</a> over the weekend suggesting that Apple's computer parts could be built in the United States.But the most interesting part is what parts are tipped to be built in the United States - large flat-panel screens - which at least one analyst believes could be an indication that Apple is planning to build a TV set. Foxconn Chairman Terry Gou said that his company was considering building a $7 billion flat-panel screen factory in the United States. Part of that $7 billion could come out of Apple's pocket, Gou said, <a href="http://asia.nikkei.com/Business/AC/Foxconn-considers-7bn-US-display-facility-with-Apple?page=1">according to Nikkei</a>.Previous reports suggested that the US plant would make large flat panels, and Gou has previously observed that it's expensive to ship large-screen TVs from Asia. But why would Apple need large-sized displays? Its iPhones need small, dense, next-generation OLED screens. Bank of America Merrill Lynch analyst Warsl Mohan speculated in a note distributed to clients on Monday (emphasis ours):"Setting up a large panel display facility for LCD would also require the setting up of an LCD glass facility (several $bn incremental) from the likes of Corning or its competitors ... Setting up a large panel display factory in the U.S. could signal Apple's intent to make its often speculated about TV. Setting up an OLED factory seems less likely despite new iPhones headed that way as Foxconn does not have much experience in this area relative to Samsung and LG Display."Apple has developed a 4K TV set in its R&amp;D labs, but it <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/behind-apples-move-to-shelve-tv-plans-1431992617?tesla=y&amp;cb=logged0.5822466905228794">gave up the plans to build it years ago</a>. Apple also needs bigger LCD panels for some of its other products, like its iMac desktop.But President Donald Trump has continually put pressure on Apple to build products in the United States. Apple could revive its TV project as a way to signal its support for American manufacturing and to mollify the current administration.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Kin Cheung/APFoxconn</div></div></div><h2>'Buy American and hire American'</h2>Trump has put continuous pressure on Apple to move some of its manufacturing operations to the United States, and during his inauguration speech, he promised that his government would "buy American and hire American."Forcing Apple to make a US plant was a frequent campaign promise, and even as recently as a week ago, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-apples-ceo-has-his-eyes-open-to-manufacturing-in-us-2017-1">Trump said</a> that Apple CEO Tim Cook would "like to do something major here," referring to building a big manufacturing plant, apparently based on a short congrats call held shortly after he was elected.But Apple doesn't actually do most of its own manufacturing. It contracts with Foxconn and similar companies to do its assembly, and those companies also sell to Apple the parts it needs for its phones.Plus, parts for Apple products are already built in the United States. Apple says that it counts 8,000 suppliers in 31 states providing parts and equipment for building iPhones and Macs. But even in this context, Apple backing a big manufacturing plant could be a significant political win for Trump. Foxconn's display plant could create 30,000 to 50,000 jobs in the US, the Wall Street Journal <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/foxconn-mulls-7-billion-investment-to-build-u-s-factory-1485153535">reported</a>. Apple has 80,000 US based employees in total. Where could Foxconn build factories in the US? It depends on which states give Foxconn the best incentives. Pennsylvania seems to be in the lead for either a "molding facility" or the display plant. A trade official from Pennsylvania was at Foxconn's holiday party, Nikkei reported. "I have to tell other states to hurry up or we'll go ahead and sign with Pennsylvania," Gou said.

Speculation is mounting that Apple could build a TV - because of Trump

The plant will be in House Speaker Paul Ryan's district, and represents a big win for the Republican leader. Apple is considering 'bendable' screens for future iPhones

Of this, projects worth Rs 4.5 lakh crore have come under implementation mode in 2014-15, and investments worth Rs 2 lakh crore have started moving at the ground level in the first quarter of this fiscal. 
 
Indian conglomerates such as the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Tata+group+">Tata group</a> and <keyword id="6367820" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Adani-Group">Adani group</keyword> are leading from the front, with each of them announcing 15 new investment projects since May 2014.  <keyword id="124937" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indigo-Airlines">Indigo Airlines</keyword>' announcement to acquire 250 A-320 planes from <keyword id="6356166" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Airbus">Airbus</keyword> is the largest investment plan to come up under the <keyword id="6360789" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Modi-Government">Modi government</keyword>, followed by Adani Renewable Energy's solar park projects in Rajasthan worth Rs 60,000 crore and a Rs 40,000 crore LCD panel fabrication plant announced by Vedanta. 
 
Chandrajit Banerjee, director general at the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Confederation+of+Indian+Industry+or+CII">Confederation of Indian Industry or CII</a>, said: "Our analysis clearly indicates that there has been a new momentum in both investment and economic activity in the last 15 months. We are confident that this will steadily increase as the invest ment climate is picking up." 
 
The CMIE said, citing the rise in investment plans and projects under implementation, "Fresh project announcements in India have also increased since the new government came into power... The implementation rate has also improved." 
 
That machinery firms recorded the first rise in quarterly sales in the past three years in the first three months of 2015-16 signals a revival in capital expenditure, it said.
