<p class="source"><span>US Navy video by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Jeanette Mullinax</span></p><p class="caption">A landing craft, air cushion in action during the Talisman Saber 17 exercise, July 8, 2017.</p><p>The US Navy's Landing Craft, Air Cushion, or LCAC, is designed to haul 60 to 75 tons of cargo over the water and across the beach during amphibious operations.</p><p>The LCAC's air cushion allows it to <a href="http://www.navy.mil/navydata/fact_display.asp?cid=4200&amp;ct=4&amp;tid=1500" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">access 70%</a> of the world's coastline, outstripping conventional landing craft, which can only handle about 15%.</p><p>The LCAC first deployed aboard the USS Germantown dock-landing ship in 1987 and continues to serve the Navy, <a href="http://www.navy.mil/navydata/fact_display.asp?cid=4200&amp;ct=4&amp;tid=1500" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">hauling everything</a> from personnel and equipment to landing craft and M1 Abrams tanks to shore.</p><p>Over the weekend, LCACs aboard amphibious-assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard took part in an amphibious-landing rehearsal as part of Talisman Saber 17, a US-Australian bilateral exercise done every two years off the coast of Australia.</p><p>In footage released by the US Defense Department, LCACs can be seen entering and exiting the Bonhomme Richard's well deck and zipping across the water, performing exercises to "increase naval proficiencies in operating against blue-water adversarial threats" during littoral operations.</p><p>The Navy has 91 LCACs in service, and a Service Life Extension Program is underway to add 10 years of life to 64 of them by the end of the program in 2018. A <a href="http://www.navy.mil/navydata/fact_display.asp?cid=4200&amp;ct=4&amp;tid=1500" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">contract</a> has already been issued for the LCAC's replacement, the Ship to Shore Connector.</p><p>The USS Kearsarge, another of the Navy's amphibious-assault ships, can carry up to three LCACs alongside a full complement of about 2,000 Marines and their gear.</p><p class="source"><span>Christopher Woody/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">Assault Craft Unit Four, seen in the well deck of the USS Kearsarge.</p><p>Assault Craft Unit Four, an LCAC on the Kearsarge that Business Insider toured during Fleet Week, can carry up 72 tons and hit speeds close to 60 mph. It's not easy to drive. The operator has to yoke all four limbs into place, while concentrating on two separate foot-operated rudders. The LCAF Craftsman has the same challenge as a helicopter pilot - the vessel effectively operates in six dimensions, careening across water and land like a giant air-hockey puck.</p>

The US Navy has an unstoppable hovercraft that can go from water to land in seconds

<p>The Marine Corps Warfighting Lab, in conjunction with the Office of Naval Research, is currently testing a beast of an amphibious lander. </p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/article/20140318/NEWS04/303180049/Marine-Corps-Warfighting-Lab-assesses-potential-landing-craft-replacement">Ultra Heavy-Lift Amphibious Connector</a> (UHAC) has been developed as a replacement to the current Landing Craft Air Cushioned (LCAC). The UHAC would be used to bring ashore troops, equipment, and vehicles. It can even land multiple tanks at once. </p>
<p>The UHAC began testing on July 9 at the Marine Corps Training Area Bellows on Oahu, Hawaii and it is taking part in the Rim of the Pacific Exercise 2014 which is currently underway until August 1. We have highlighted some of the amazing capabilities of the UHAC below. </p>
<h3>The current iteration of the UHAC is only half the size of the expected final version, although it is still massive: 42 feet long, 26 feet wide, and 17 feet high.</h3>

<h3>At full capacity, the UHAC should be able to carry three main battle tanks ashore from a range of 200 nautical miles. </h3>

<h3>Altogether, the UHAC can carry payloads up to 190 tons, almost three times as much as the LCAC. </h3>

<h3>Unlike the LCAC, the UHAC can continue moving while onshore across mud flats, tidal marsh areas, and even over sea walls of up to 10 feet in height. </h3>

The Marine Corps Is Testing A Monster Of A New Amphibious Assault Vehicle

New Delhi, Mar 2 () The Power Ministry has raised concerns over the proposed strategic divestment of government equity in NTPC, PFC and PowerGrid, which may bring down its stake to below 51 per cent.<p>However, a final call on the proposed government stake sale is yet be taken as the ministry has conveyed its reservations to the Finance Ministry.</p><p>"There are issues. There will be some advantages and there will be some disadvantages," Power Secretary S N Sahai told reporters on sideline of 19th Foundation Day celebrations of Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) here on Monday.</p><p>Asked whether the power ministry has rejected the proposal, he said, "There is nothing like rejection. Each proposal has two sides, the advantages and disadvantages, we have conveyed both of them to the Finance Ministry. We have told them about the disadvantages, and we are cognizant of the advantages".</p><p>He further said that the ministry has highlighted both aspects of the issue and no stand has been taken yet, and these are part of deliberations on the proposal.</p><p>Earlier, under disinvestment plan, it was proposed to divest government equity below 51 per cent of its stake in certain public sector undertakings, including NTPC, PowerGrid and Power Finance Corporation (PFC).</p><p>Thereafter certain foreign bond holder in these PSU had raised concerns about that. The power entities are supposed to compensate bondholders after reduction of the government stake to below 51 per cent.</p><p>Moreover, the PSUs have raised concerns about this proposal saying that it would not go down well with investors particularly foreign lenders.</p><p>An official said that the power ministry has forwarded these PSUs concerns over reducing government stake below 51 per cent to the Finance Ministry.</p><p>Presently, the government owns 54.14 per cent in NTPC, 54.96 per cent in PowerGrid and 55.99 per cent in PFC.</p><p>On foundation day celebrations, the BEE launched star rating programme for deep freezers and light commercial air conditioners (LCAC).</p><p>The star labelling programme for deep freezer and LCAC together are expected to save about nine billion units of electricity and reduce CO2 emission by 7.7 million tonnes by 2030.</p>The star labeling for the two appliances are launched under voluntary mode which would be converted into mandatory mode after market transformation. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Daniel Brown/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>One of the warships that the US Navy showed off at Fleet Week in New York City in May was the USS Arlington, a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship. </p><p>And I got a chance to go aboard. </p><p><span>Amphibious transport dock ships (LPDs) "are used to transport and land Marines, their equipment and supplies by embarked Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC) or conventional landing craft and amphibious assault vehicles (AAV) augmented by helicopters or vertical take-off and landing aircraft (MV 22)," <a href="http://www.navy.mil/navydata/fact_display.asp?cid=4200&amp;tid=600&amp;ct=4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the US Navy. </span></p><p><span>The US Navy also displayed an AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter and a UH-1Y Venom helicopter on the Arlington's flight deck. </span></p><p><span>Check it out below:</span></p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> has increasingly contentious relations with its neighbors, particularly <keyword id="6355311" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="japan">Japan</keyword>, with which Beijing has disputes over several islands in the East China Sea.</li><li>While the risk of conflict is low, any clash between them would require forces that can approach, capture, and defend islands, and both are building military units to do just that.</li></ul><p>Military success in the Pacific has always relied on two things: naval strength and amphibious capabilities. Bitter fighting between the Allies and Japan across the region's seas and islands during World War II made this abundantly clear.</p><p>China has carefully studied history, and its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chinese-military-is-improving-but-us-has-more-combat-experience-2020-7" target="_top">rapid increase in military might</a> is now changing the balance of power in the world's largest ocean. That makes many of China's neighbors nervous — and one is responding in kind: Japan.</p><h2>A well-equipped marine corps</h2><p><div type="image" title="China Chinese marine corps" height="1667" width="2500" msid="77490758" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Even amid China's overall military growth, the expansion of People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) and its Marine Corps (PLANMC) has been striking.</p><p>In the last three years, the PLANMC has <a href="https://www.usni.org/magazines/proceedings/2020/april/chinas-marine-corps-rise#:~:text=While%20the%20Chinese%20state%20has,be%20folded%20into%20the%20PLANMC." target="_top">grown</a> from 10,000 marines to between 28,000 and 35,000 and has plans to eventually reach a total of 100,000.</p><p>After briefly forming and disbanding in the 1950s, the PLANMC was reestablished in 1979 and, like the PLAN, soon began receiving significant investment.</p><p>Today, the PLANMC has seven brigades and is present wherever the PLAN operates. Each brigade is heavily armed, including a minimum of two infantry battalions, an armored regiment, a howitzer battalion, a missile battalion, and a special forces amphibious reconnaissance battalion.</p><p><div type="image" title="Chinese marine corps marines" height="1500" width="2250" msid="77490768" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Particularly impressive are the PLANMC's armored amphibious vehicles. These include the <a href="https://www.army-technology.com/projects/zbd-05-amphibious-infantry-fighting-vehicle/" target="_top">ZBD-05</a> — which is actually faster on water and better armed than its Western <a href="https://www.armyrecognition.com/united_states_american_army_light_armoured_vehicle/lvtp-7_aavp-7a1_aav-7_amphibious_assault_vehicle_technical_data_sheet_specifications_pictures_video.html" target="_top">counterpart</a>, which Japan uses — and even a self-propelled howitzer, the <a href="https://www.armyrecognition.com/china_artillery_vehicles_and_weapon_systems_uk/plz-07_plz07_122mm_self-propelled_howitzer_technical_data_sheet_specifications_information_uk.html" target="_top">PLZ-07</a>.</p><p>The US Defense Intelligence Agency in 2019 <a href="https://www.dia.mil/Portals/27/Documents/News/Military%20Power%20Publications/China_Military_Power_FINAL_5MB_20190103.pdf" target="_top">called</a> the PLANMC "a fully amphibious force capable of conducting amphibious assault operations using combined-arms tactics and multiple avenues of approach."</p><p>The PLANMC is "the most capable amphibious force of any <keyword id="430735" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="South-China-Sea">South China Sea</keyword> claimant," the agency said. This is due in large part to the <a href="https://crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/RL/RL33153/236" target="_top">strength</a> of the PLAN, which is the world's largest navy with well over 300 vessels.</p><p>China is building ships faster than almost all of its competitors. According to a US Office of Naval Intelligence report, their "design and material quality is in many cases comparable to [US Navy] ships, and China is quickly closing the gap in any areas of deficiency."</p><p>This is certainly true of vessels used for amphibious operations.</p><p><div type="image" title="China navy Type 071 amphibious transport dock Changbai Shan" height="760" width="1400" msid="77490775" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The PLAN has long maintained a fleet of landing ships to carry tanks, troops, and equipment. That fleet has been bolstered by new, modern amphibious ships similar to those used by the British, French, and US navies.</p><p>Since 2006, the PLAN has acquired six Type-071 amphibious transport docks with at least one more on the way. These ships differ from previous landing ships in that they can carry hundreds of troops, multiple armored amphibious vehicles, and up to four air-cushioned landing craft (LCAC). It can also carry four or more transport helicopters, such as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aircraft-china-will-put-aboard-its-new-shandong-aircraft-carrier-2019-12" target="_top">the Z-18</a>, for air-assault missions.</p><p>In just over a year China has built two Type-075 amphibious assault ships — essentially small aircraft carriers that can carry 900 troops, multiple LCACs and armored vehicles, and up to 30 helicopters. China is building a <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/hisutton/2020/08/07/new-intelligence-shows-china-is-building-more-type-075-assault-carriers/#7df4b4d722c2" target="_top">third</a> Type-075 ship and may even design a <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/hisutton/2020/07/23/stealth-uavs-could-arm-chinas-type-076-assault-carrier/#4de442e36f3d" target="_top">follow-on class</a> to carry drones and jets.</p><p>The PLA's ground forces also have entire brigades dedicated to amphibious operations that would support the PLANMC.</p><h2>Japan's first marine unit since WWII</h2><p><div type="image" title="Japan Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade" height="1875" width="2500" msid="77490782" hostid="261"></div></p><p>While Japan has a <a href="https://www.history.navy.mil/research/library/online-reading-room/title-list-alphabetically/j/japanese-naval-ground-forces.html" target="_top">more solid</a> naval infantry tradition, its pacifist constitution limits it to defensive capabilities, prohibiting it from having a marine corps in the traditional sense.</p><p>But the <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/japan-china-military-provocations-revival-disputed-islands-pacifism-11594735596" target="_top">rising threat</a> Japan sees in China has forced it to think about how to handle a potential conflict with its massive mainland neighbor.</p><p>The Japanese are particularly worried about an invasion of their southern home islands — especially the Ryukyu Islands, which stretch from Kyushu to Taiwan. With most of those islands lacking a large military presence, Japan found that it would need the be able to rapidly deploy reinforcements.</p><p>This is a major shift from Japan's longtime focus on using armor and artillery to respond to a potential Soviet invasion from the north, Dr. Zack Cooper, a research fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, told Insider.</p><p><div type="image" title="Japan navy marines amphibious ship vehicles Philippines" height="3712" width="5568" msid="77490788" hostid="261"></div></p><p>"Now they're having to actually turn 180 degrees [to] where armor and artillery aren't very useful and figure out how to get down to these islands in the south to deal with China," Cooper said.</p><p>As a result, Japan turned the small amphibious unit from its Western Army into an entirely new unit, the <keyword id="6410209" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="amphibious-rapid-deployment-brigade">Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade</keyword>, created in 2018.</p><p>It's Japan's first marine unit since World War II and now has about 3,000 troops. The ARDB is equipped with US-made AAV-7 amphibious assault vehicles and the <a href="https://www.army-technology.com/projects/komatsu-lav/" target="_top">Komatsu </a><a href="https://www.army-technology.com/projects/komatsu-lav/" target="_top">light armored vehicle</a>. Japan also plans on acquiring up to 17 MV-22 Ospreys for transportation as well as a number of LCACs.</p><p>The brigade is modeled on and <a href="https://thediplomat.com/2020/02/us-japan-conduct-amphibious-warfare-exercise/" target="_top">trains extensively</a> with the US Marine Corps, giving it access to some of the most advanced training doctrine and methods available.</p><p>It is also supported by Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force ships — particularly its <a href="https://www.naval-technology.com/projects/hyuga-class/" target="_top">two</a> <a href="https://www.naval-technology.com/projects/izumo-class-helicopter-destroyer/" target="_top">types</a> of helicopter carriers, some of which will <a href="https://www.navyrecognition.com/index.php/news/defence-news/2020/july/8750-japan-confirms-that-f-35b-jets-will-operate-from-izumo-class-helicopter-destroyer.html" target="_top">soon</a> carry F-35B jets.</p><h2>Different forces with different missions</h2><p><div type="image" title="China marine corps tank armored vehicle" height="1596" width="2500" msid="77490798" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The ARDB is nowhere near as strong as the PLANMC, but they aren't meant to do the same thing.</p><p>"The missions are very different," Cooper said. "What the Japanese are trying to do is protect their southwestern islands. The Japanese effort is a pretty limited amphibious capability much more focused on being able to resupply and reinforce existing forces on Japanese territory."</p><p>The ARDB, then, is meant to be a purely defensive force that would be just one part of Japan's response to an attack on its territory.</p><p>"It's a small force by design," Timothy Heath, a senior <keyword id="6356001" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="international">international</keyword> and defense researcher at the Rand Corporation think tank, told Insider. "It's not designed to do something like seize a huge territory like Taiwan. It's designed to fight on the Senkaku Islands."</p><p>China, on the other hand, is trying to create an all-encompassing amphibious force with the capability to land and overcome entrenched enemy positions.</p><p>While the main target has always been Taiwan and the <a href="https://www.cfr.org/interactives/chinas-maritime-disputes?cid=otr-marketing_use-china_sea_InfoGuide#!/chinas-maritime-disputes?cid=otr-marketing_use-china_sea_InfoGuide" target="_top">South China Sea</a>, the PLAN and PLANMC are beginning to <a href="http://english.chinamil.com.cn/news-channels/china-military-news/2016-01/25/content_6868361.htm" target="_top">spread out</a> to areas that are important to China's economic interests — namely <a href="https://thediplomat.com/2018/12/china-dispatches-new-naval-fleet-for-gulf-of-aden-escort-mission/" target="_top">the Indian Ocean</a> and Middle East, including <a href="https://www.theepochtimes.com/chinas-marines-prepare-for-power-projection_2754036.html" target="_top">to Djibouti</a>, the site of China's only overseas military base.</p><p>"Those are all areas that sorely need greater Chinese security or even military protection for some high-dollar investments," Heath said.</p><h2>Potential for conflict</h2><p><div type="image" title="Japan Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade Izumo" height="1667" width="2500" msid="77490801" hostid="261"></div></p><p>But Japan still has plenty to worry about. It has a number of maritime disputes with China, chief among them the Senkaku Islands, which China calls the Diaoyu Islands.</p><p>In a conflict, the PLANMC would likely try to seize Japanese-held islands like the Senkakus. The Japanese Self-Defense Force would send air and naval forces to stop them.</p><p>The ARDB would play a vital role as the first ground troops to reinforce or retake Japanese territory. Japan would also have help from the US, which is obliged by treaty to come to Japan's defense.</p><p>Amphibious operations will be vital in any conflict between China and Japan, but taking islands is just one part of it. Victory requires holding them against an enemy with modern and growing air, naval, and missile units.</p><p>"It's not hard for China or Japan to send a few hundred troops to land on the Senkakus and put up a flag and say, 'We conquered it,'" Heath said. "The real challenge is keeping them there alive."</p>

China and Japan are building forces to fight it out on Pacific islands — here's how they stack up

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Aircraft carriers are usually the centerpiece of a fleet, but only a few navies have them.</li><li>Many more navies have amphibious assault ships or helicopter carriers, which carry aircraft, troops, and gear.</li></ul><p>Few warships get as much attention as aircraft carriers. Massive in size and marvels of engineering, they are essential tools of power projection and symbols of national status.</p><p>Today, eight countries — the US, UK, France, Spain, Italy, India, Russia, and China — operate flattops capable of launching and landing fixed-wing aircraft, but the list grows when amphibious assault ships and helicopter carriers are included.</p><p>Amphibious assault ships and helicopter carriers evolved from the island-hoping campaigns of World War II. They allow for the simultaneous deployment of naval infantry and air support.</p><p>As multipurpose vessels, they can carry out other missions — notably <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/allies-want-more-training-with-us-navy-top-admiral-says-2021-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">anti-submarine warfare</a>.</p><p>While not as imposing as full-fledged flattops, amphibious assault ships and helicopter carriers allow smaller navies to wield capabilities usually reserved to larger maritime powers.</p><h2>San Giorgio-class</h2><div type="image" title="Italy navy amphibious ship San Marco" height="1272" width="2000" msid="94037708" hostid="261" sizebytes="419634"></div><p>The ships of Italy's <a href="https://www.seaforces.org/marint/Italian-Navy/Amphibious-Ship/San-Giorgio-class.htm" target="_top">San Giorgio-class</a> have been extensively modified since the first one was commissioned in 1988.</p><p>The first two ships, San Giorgio and San Marco, are 436 feet long and displace roughly 7,900 tons. The third, San Giusto, displaces over 8,000 tons.</p><p>The ships were designed as amphibious transport docks and have a well deck that can be flooded so amphibious vehicles can exit and enter. They can carry up to 350 soldiers and as many as 36 armored vehicles. They were initially armed with a bow-mounted 76mm gun, but only San Giusto still has one.</p><div type="image" title="Algerian amphibious ship Kalaat Beni-Abbes" height="1331" width="2000" msid="94037709" hostid="261" sizebytes="171670"></div><p>San Giorgio and San Marco were modified to have full-length decks from which four helicopters — mainly <a href="https://www.airforce-technology.com/projects/aw101-helicopter/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AW101s</a>, <a href="https://weaponsystems.net/system/502-Agusta-Bell+AB-212ASW" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AB-212s</a>, or <a href="https://www.marina.difesa.it/EN/thefleet/airfleet/Pagine/NH90.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SH-90s</a> — can operate. As a result, they can only carry two landing craft to transport troops and equipment. San Giusto can only operate one helicopter, but it can carry three landing craft.</p><p>In 2011, Algeria ordered an <a href="https://www.fincantieri.com/en/products-and-services/naval-vessels/enhanced-san-giusto-class/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">improved variant</a> of the San Giorgio-class, which was commissioned as Kalaat Béni Abbès in 2014.</p><p>At 465 feet long, it is larger than its predecessors, though its deck is only 416 feet. It can carry 450 troops and has two landing spots for AW101 or <a href="https://www.naval-technology.com/projects/lynx/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Super Lynx</a> helicopters. It is also armed with missiles in two vertical launchers and still has the bow-mounted 76mm gun.</p><h2>Type 0891A/Type 075</h2><div type="image" title="Type 075 (rendering)" height="1520" width="2840" msid="94037710" hostid="261" sizebytes="136190"></div><p>In 1997, China commissioned its first aviation ship, <a href="http://eng.mod.gov.cn/news/2020-07/09/content_4867847_3.htm?yikikata=df6fa307-6a26dfd750d5be8a199ffa57991f3a48" target="_top">the Type 0891A</a>, also known as the Shichang 82. It is 410 feet long and displaces 9,500 tons. Its deck has landing spots for at least two Harbin Z-9 helicopters.</p><p>With no armaments or internal hangar, the Shichang 82 is used almost exclusively for training and transport, but the experience of operating helicopters on it — and intense study of foreign navies — informed the design of China's first real amphibious assault ship, the <a href="https://www.19fortyfive.com/2022/08/chinas-amphibious-ships-what-taiwan-fears-most/" target="_top">Type 075-class.</a></p><p>Displacing about 36,000 tons and measuring 778 feet, the Type 075 can carry 30 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-growing-chinese-military-helicopter-fleet-used-against-taiwan-2022-3" target="_top">helicopters</a>, mainly the <a href="https://www.airforce-technology.com/projects/changhez8transport/" target="_top">Z-8</a>, <a href="https://www.militaryfactory.com/aircraft/detail.php?aircraft_id=991" target="_top">Z-9</a> and <a href="https://jalopnik.com/china-s-z-20-helicopter-looks-awfully-familiar-1839076626" target="_top">Z-20</a> models. Russian-made <a href="https://www.naval-technology.com/projects/ka-52k-katran-helicopter/" target="_top">Ka-52K</a> attack helicopters <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-eyes-russian-attack-helicopters-to-arm-amphib-assault-ships-2021-9" target="_top">may also be part</a> of the air wing.</p><p>Equipped with a floodable well deck, the Type 075s can carry dozens of <a href="https://www.19fortyfive.com/2022/08/china-has-the-worlds-fastest-swimming-tanks/" target="_top">armored vehicles</a>, about 900 troops, and multiple hovercraft known as Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC).</p><p>Three Type 075s have been completed — two entered service in 2021 — China plans to have eight in total. There are also reports of interest in a follow-on subclass, the <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/hisutton/2020/07/23/stealth-uavs-could-arm-chinas-type-076-assault-carrier/?sh=63f149216f3d" target="_top">Type 076</a>, which could feature electromagnetic catapults capable of launching fixed-wing drones.</p><h2>Ocean/Atlântico</h2><div type="image" title="BNS Atlântico amphibious assault ship" height="1333" width="2000" msid="94037711" hostid="261" sizebytes="487130"></div><p>In 1998, the British Royal Navy commissioned HMS Ocean, which was designed to carry 800 marines and up to 40 vehicles.</p><p>Ocean didn't have a floodable well deck, but it was equipped with a stern ramp and four sets of davits on its sides to launch landing craft.</p><p>After 20 years in service with the Royal Navy, the ship was sold to Brazil in 2018. It was recommissioned the same year as <a href="https://www.naval-technology.com/projects/nam-atlantico-multi-purpose-aircraft-carrier-brazil/" target="_top">Atlântico</a> and was given upgrades. In 2020, Brazil <a href="https://twitter.com/marmilbr/status/1332016015157424129" target="_top">announced</a> that Atlântico could operate fixed-wing drones and tilt-rotor aircraft.</p><p>Its 660-foot deck can handle at least six helicopters simultaneously, mainly a combination of the <a href="http://www.military-today.com/helicopters/ec725_caracal.htm" target="_top">EC725 Caracal</a>, <a href="https://www.naval-technology.com/projects/s70b-seahawk/" target="_top">S-70B Seahawk</a>, and <a href="https://www.militaryfactory.com/aircraft/detail.php?aircraft_id=380" target="_top">AS350 Ecureuil</a> models. Its hangar deck can store a total of 18 helicopters.</p><h2>Mistral-class</h2><div type="image" title="French amphibious assault ship LHD Tonnerre (L9014)" height="696" width="928" msid="94037713" hostid="261" sizebytes="55196"></div><p>In 2005, the French Navy commissioned the first of its three <a href="https://www.seaforces.org/marint/French-Navy/Amphibious-Ship/Mistral-class.htm" target="_top">Mistral-class</a> amphibious assault ships. Each has a 652-foot deck and a full displacement of over 21,000 tons.</p><p>The Mistrals can flood their well decks to launch 450 troops, over a dozen vehicles, and four landing craft or two LCACs.</p><p>They can also carry 16 helicopters, six of which can operate on the flight deck at a time. The helicopters most commonly used aboard Mistrals are NH-90s and <a href="https://www.militaryfactory.com/aircraft/detail.php?aircraft_id=335" target="_top">SA 330 Pumas</a>.</p><p>Two Mistrals were built for Russia, but the contract was cancelled after Moscow annexed Crimea in 2014. The ships were instead sold to Egypt, which <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyCr40FSftQ" target="_top">purchased</a> dozens of Kamov Ka-52K, Kamov Ka-29TB, and Kamov Ka-27P helicopters from Russia — helicopters that Russia was planning to use on its Mistrals.</p><h2>Dokdo-class</h2><div type="image" title="South Korea Dokdo-class amphibious assault ship ROKS Marado" height="1184" width="2000" msid="94037714" hostid="261" sizebytes="445444"></div><p>In 2007, South Korea commissioned ROKS Dokdo, the first of two <a href="https://www.naval-technology.com/projects/dodko-class/" target="_top">Dokdo-class</a> amphibious assault ships.</p><p>At 652 feet long and displacing over 18,000 tons, Dokdo-class ships have flat flight decks and floodable well decks. They can carry about 700 marines, roughly a dozen armored vehicles, and two LCACs.</p><p>Each Dokdo can carry up to 15 helicopters, usually a combination of <a href="https://amcmuseum.org/at-the-museum/aircraft/uh-1h-iroquois-huey/" target="_top">UH-1Hs</a> and <a href="https://www.seaforces.org/marint/Republic-Korea-Navy/Aviation/Black-Hawk-ROK.htm" target="_top">UH-60P Black Haw</a><a href="https://www.seaforces.org/marint/Republic-Korea-Navy/Aviation/Black-Hawk-ROK.htm" target="_top">ks</a>. Future air wings will include the <a href="https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2021/05/south-korea-selects-armed-variant-of-kai-marineon-helicopter-for-marine-corps/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">KAI MUH-1 Marineons</a>.</p><p>The second Dokdo-class vessel, <a href="https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2021/06/south-korea-commissions-second-dokdo-class-amphibious-ship-roks-marado-lph-6112/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ROKS Marado</a>, was commissioned in 2021 and features a number of changes, including vertical launch cells for anti-aircraft, anti-ship, and land-attack missiles, among others.</p><h2>Hyūga, Izumo, and Ōsumi-class</h2><div type="image" title="hyuga japan navy aircraft carrier" height="600" width="840" msid="94037715" hostid="261" sizebytes="45548"></div><p>Not to be outdone, Japan in 2009 commissioned the first of two <a href="https://www.mod.go.jp/msdf/equipment/ships/ddh/hyuga/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hyūga-class</a> helicopter destroyers.</p><p>Measuring 646 feet and displacing some 18,000 tons, their air wings usually consist of three SH‐60K Seahawks and one MCH‐101.</p><p>They are also armed with 16 Mk 41 vertical launch missile cells, two Phalanx close-in weapon systems, and two triple-torpedo tubes.</p><div type="image" title="Navy aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan Japanese Izumo" height="876" width="1168" msid="94037716" hostid="261" sizebytes="63196"></div><p>In addition to the two Hyūgas, Japan is converting its two <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marine-corps-f35bs-landed-on-japans-converted-aircraft-carrier-izumo-2021-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Izumo-class helicopter carriers into full-fledged carriers</a> that can operate F-35B short-takeoff and vertical-landing jets.</p><p>Japan also has three <a href="https://www.mod.go.jp/msdf/equipment/ships/lst/osumi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ōsumi-class</a> tank landing ships that are primarily tasked with transporting troops, vehicles, and landing craft but can also operate helicopters on their flat decks.</p><h2>Juan Carlos I</h2><div type="image" title="Marine Corps MV-22B Osprey aboard Juan Carlos I" height="1333" width="2000" msid="94037717" hostid="261" sizebytes="187670"></div><p>In 2010, Spain commissioned the <a href="https://naval-technology.com/projects/juan-carlos/" target="_top">Juan Carlos I</a>. At 757 feet long, it has a floodable well deck and can carry up to 24 aircraft, about 900 troops, and over a dozen armored vehicles, in addition to hovercraft and landing craft.</p><p>The Juan Carlos differs from most amphibious assault ships in that it can operate fixed-wing aircraft, making it more similar to the US Navy's <a href="https://www.naval-technology.com/projects/wasp/" target="_top">Wasp</a> and <a href="https://www.naval-technology.com/projects/americaclassamphibio/" target="_top">America</a> classes.</p><p>The Juan Carlos I has a ski-jump ramp and a deck designed to handle the jet blast from short-takeoff and vertical-landing aircraft, like the AV-8B Harrier II jet and V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft. (The ship could support F-35Bs, but Spain has no plans to buy them.)</p><p>Juan Carlos I's air wing is often mixed, with 12 AV-8B Harrier IIs and 12 helicopters, usually a combination of NH-90s, SH-3Ds, AB-212s and CH-47s.</p><h2>Canberra and Anadolu</h2><div type="image" title="Marine Corps amphibious assault vehicles HMAS Canberra" height="1369" width="2000" msid="94037718" hostid="261" sizebytes="196202"></div><p>The Juan Carlos I-class is named for a former Spanish king, but Spain isn't the only country that uses it.</p><p>Juan Carlos I is the basis for Australia's two <a href="https://www.navy.gov.au/fleet/ships-boats-craft/lhd" target="_top">Canberra-class</a> vessels, which were partly built by the same Spanish shipyard, and for Turkey's <a href="https://www.naval-technology.com/projects/tcg-anadolu-multipurpose-amphibious-assault-ship/" target="_top">TCG Anadolu</a>.</p><p>The Canberra-class kept the ski-jump ramp but can't operate fixed-wing aircraft, carrying 18 helicopters instead. Their air wings are usually made up of MRH-90s and SH-60 Seahawks but can include CH-47s and ARH Tigers.</p><div type="image" title="Recep Tayyip Erdogan amphibious assault ship TCG Anadolu" height="1276" width="1701" msid="94037719" hostid="261" sizebytes="75908"></div><p>Turkey's expulsion from the F-35 program meant Ankara couldn't buy F-35Bs, and it <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/global/2021/03/11/turkey-plans-to-deploy-attack-drones-from-its-amphibious-assault-ship/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">plans</a> to make TCG Anadolu a drone carrier instead. The new air wing will include a <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/pauliddon/2022/05/31/will-turkeys-upcoming-bayraktar-tb3-naval-drone-also-become-an-export-success/?sh=19d21caf4abd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">naval variant</a> of the Bayraktar TB2 with foldable wings and an <a href="https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2022/03/turkeys-future-unmanned-fighter-mius-on-final-assembly-line/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">unmanned fighter jet currently under development</a>.</p><p>A Turkish official <a href="https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2022/05/here-is-how-uavs-will-be-recovered-aboard-tcg-anadolu/" target="_top">said</a> Anadolu would be able to house up to 80 drones, and Turkey plans to add a short-takeoff but arrested recovery system to the ship in order to launch and retrieve those drones. Anadolu's air wing may also include the Turkish-built T129 ATAK attack helicopter and the planned <a href="https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2021/04/turkey-plans-to-deploy-indigenous-aircraft-hurjet-on-lhd-anadolu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hürjet</a> light attack aircraft.</p><p>Anadolu is expected to enter service later this year, and there are plans for a second vessel, TCG Takya.</p><h2>Wasp and America classes</h2><div type="image" title="USS Wasp" height="797" width="1063" msid="94037720" hostid="261" sizebytes="81038"></div><p>The US Navy has two classes of amphibious assault ships: the Wasp- and America-class.</p><p>USS Wasp entered service in 1989. The 844-foot ship can carry up to five M-1 tanks, about 35 light armored vehicles, and roughly 1,800 Marines. It displaces 40,500 tons fully loaded.</p><p>Eight Wasp-class ships were built, but one, USS Bonhomme Richard, was lost to fire damage in 2020.</p><p>America-class ships, the first of which entered service in 2014, are similar in length but can displace over 44,000 tons. USS America and second-in-class USS Tripoli can also carry roughly 1,800 Marines, but the ships are oriented toward air operations and do not have well decks.</p><div type="image" title="Marine Corps America F-35B lightning carrier" height="933" width="1400" msid="94037721" hostid="261" sizebytes="188286"></div><p>Wasp-class ships can carry about 25 aircraft. A typical air wing consists of six to eight F-35Bs — or up to 20 if they're in what the US military calls <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marine-commandant-corps-more-unpredictable-with-f35-lightning-carrier-2020-2" target="_top">the "lightning carrier" configuration</a> — and a mix of SH-60 anti-submarine helicopters, UH-1Y utility helicopters, CH-53E heavy-lift helicopters, AH-1Z attack helicopters, and MV-22 tilt-rotors.</p><p>The makeup of an America-class ship's air wing depends on its mission, but its "typical air combat element" includes five F-35Bs, two UH-1Ys, four CH-53Es, 12 MV-22s, two MH-60s, and four AH-1Zs, <a href="https://ingalls.huntingtoningalls.com/our-products/lha/" target="_top">according</a> to Huntington Ingalls Shipbuilding.</p><p>Two of the 11 planned America-class ships are in service. The third, the future USS Bougainville, has been under construction since March 2019. Unlike its predecessors, Bougainville will have a well deck to support amphibious operations, which comes in exchange for a smaller aircraft hangar.</p>
