<keyword id="19901201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sebi" source="keywords">SEBI</keyword> has proposed that registered <keyword id="21253972" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="investment-advisers" source="keywords">Investment Advisers</keyword> (IAs) and <keyword id="21511721" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="research-analysts" source="keywords">Research Analysts</keyword> (RAs) who employ artificial intelligence (AI) tools in their services must disclose the extent of their usage to clients, emphasizing the importance of strong security measures to avoid unintended data exposure. This transparency is crucial for clients to understand how <keyword id="20096338" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI-tools" source="keywords">AI tools</keyword> contribute to their investment decisions and to make informed choices about their advisory services. "The possibility of unintended data exposure highlights the need for strong security measures and clear disclosure to clients about the extent of AI tool usage", Trivesh D, COO at Tradejini, a stock trading platform, told PTI. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), in its consultation paper earlier this month, highlighted the growing usage of AI tools in Investment Adviser (IA) and Research Analyst (RA) services. With technological innovations and advancements, many AI tools are currently available in chatbot form such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, etc. AI-based tools allow one to have human-like conversations and receive human-like responses with the chatbot. These tools assist various tasks such as summarising and analysing data and may help in improving efficiency and productivity. "These AI tools, however, may not adequately safeguard sensitive data shared during conversations, potentially leading to unintended data exposure and concerns related to <keyword id="19900735" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="data-security" source="keywords">data security</keyword>," SEBI said in its consultation paper issued last week. Feroze Azeez, Deputy CEO, Anand Rathi Wealth Ltd said "while embracing this innovation, we must be mindful of its implications and responsibilities". IAs provide personalised services according to client-specific requirements, based on <keyword id="22797015" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="risk-profiling" source="keywords">risk profiling</keyword> and suitability. Similarly, RAs provide recommendations based on certain parameters and methodology adopted and are required to keep records of the research report, research recommendations and rationale for arriving at research recommendations. While AI tools can provide significant assistance in the work of IAs and RAs, they may not always give meaningful outputs that are expected to be based on the understanding of complex security-specific or client-specific scenarios/ requirements such as personal/ financial conditions or goals, SEBI stated. Further, such tools may not always provide all the information based on which output/ recommendation has been generated. For example, AI tools may not bring out whether the requirements of risk profiling and suitability have been complied with by IA, it added. "An IA/RA who uses AI tools for servicing its clients must provide complete disclosure of the extent of use of such tools to its prospective clients, to enable them to take informed decisions of continuance or otherwise with the IA/RA," SEBI suggested in the consultation paper. Considering that the investment advice/ research services provided by IA/RA based on AI tools would affect the investment decision of clients, SEBI said, the responsibility of data security, compliance with the regulatory provisions governing investment advisory services/research services lies solely with the IA/ RA, irrespective of the scale and scenario of IA/ RA using AI tools. Trivesh believes that <keyword id="19901571" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="technology" source="keywords">technology</keyword> can significantly enhance the efficiency and reach of investment advisory service, but it should be used as a complementary tool, rather than a complete replacement for human judgment and expertise. "The dynamic and culturally diverse nature of India's financial landscape demands personalized investment advice that AI alone cannot provide. Since AI will undoubtedly continue to change the <keyword id="19976433" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-services" source="keywords">financial services</keyword> sector, efforts to integrate it into IA and RA services should be pursued with a balanced approach, leveraging its strengths while addressing its limitations," he added. Additionally, SEBI is also looking to create a closed ecosystem for fee collection by registered investment advisers and research analysts through a separate mechanism in order to help investors ensure that their payments are reaching only registered IAs and RAs and help them identify, isolate and avoid unregistered entities, who would be unable to access this closed ecosystem.

The net <keyword id="6362247" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="profit" source="Orion">profit</keyword> for the fiscal year was Rs 1,170 crore, also a 22 per cent jump (on-year). For the fourth quarter of FY23, the pure-play engineering services company recorded Rs 2,096 crore, a growth of 19 per cent YoY, with a net profit of more than Rs 309 crore, a 18 per cent growth. During the quarter, LTTS won a $40 million deal and three $10 million plus total contract value (TCV) deals. "FY23 was a landmark year for us as we crossed a billion dollars in revenue run rate and Rs 1,000 crore in annual profits. Our EBIT margin was the highest ever at 18.5 per cent driven by a strong focus on building a robust and sustainable operating model," said Amit Chadha, CEO and Managing Director, L&amp;T Technology Services Ltd. The combination of steady growth and expanding operating margin has led to an 18 per cent CAGR in profits over the last 5 years, he added. At the end of Q4 FY23, the patents portfolio of L&amp;T Technology Services stood at 1,090, out of which 727 are co-authored with its customers and the rest are filed by LTTS. L&T Tech announces dividend of ₹14.50  even as revenue for the year dips by 3%

And the situation is unlikely to improve until the end of the year, analysts say. Amid the ongoing weakness in the sector, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have also sold their stakes in IT companies. FPIs turned bearish on the IT and oil and gas sector in March – between these two sectors, they <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/news/fpis-offload-it-oil-gas-stocks-worth-13734-crore-in-march/articleshow/99375107.cms">sold equities worth ₹13,734 crore. </a> Analysts expect pain to continue till end of 2023 Considering the macro economic challenges like high inflation, interest rates and banking crisis in the US and European regions, analysts expect it will be a watchful few quarters for the IT sector. "The biggest issue in the IT sector is growth slowdown and possibility of recession. So, as long as the slowdown persists and global growth remains uncertain, the market will expect lesser order flow, slower execution and pricing challenges. All these three factors will lead to IT companies suffering and valuations may also not expand. Investors will have to remain watchful for one to two quarters till there is some clarity on the global growth scenario," Deepak Jasani, head of retail research at HDFC Securities told Business Insider India. The IT majors’ recently-posted fourth-quarter results and FY24 growth predictions tell their own story about the sector’s ongoing struggles. For FY23, IT major Infosys reported a growth of 15.4% in constant currency terms, lower than the guidance of 16-16.5% that it had given <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/infosys-results-q3-fy23-infosys-raises-revenue-guidance-for-fy23-to-16-16-5/articleshow/96941824.cms">at the end of Q3</a>. Besides, it guided for a 4-7% revenue growth in FY24. This is the first time since FY16 that Infosys has guided for single-digit revenue growth in constant currency terms. Bigger rival Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reported a 11-quarter low constant currency revenue growth at $7.2 billion in Q4. TCS’ outgoing chief executive officer Rajesh Gopinathan said in a post-earnings conference that the company is seeing stress in one of its largest markets, North America. The recovery that the company had expected had not yet materialised. According to Sanjeev Hota, vice president, head of research at Sharekhan BNP Paribas, told Business Insider India, the macro uncertainty faced by the sector is unlikely to get better before 2-3 quarters. “(For) the entire calendar year, things look dicey and the industry may witness some kind of stability by the fag end of this year. US, North America, which are among the biggest markets for the sector, are not expected to improve in the near term." Banking crisis could impact June-quarter earnings The global growth slowdown has worked its way into the stock market performance of these companies with shares of the entire IT pack being beaten down significantly in 2023. The Nifty IT index is down 30% so far this year compared to a 3% fall in the broader Nifty50 index. The IT companies in India faced the heat after the banking crisis in the US and Europe erupted in March, triggered by the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in the US and the turmoil at Swiss lender Credit Suisse. IT majors like TCS, Infosys and Wipro have also neared their 52-week low since March considering IT companies’ exposure to US banks amid the banking sector crisis. BFSI clients are among the Indian IT companies’ largest clients. "Most of the price damage in the IT stocks has already been done. However, outperformance of the sector from the current level seems restricted till global macro headwinds stabilises. The sector valuation multiple is driven by earnings growth and if growth tapers off, there are little chances of the (IT) stocks outperforming the broader market indices,” added Hota. He, however, recommends staggered buying in TCS among the large caps and Persistent Systems from the mid-cap stocks, for long-term investors. The lower-than-expected growth in March quarter for sector leaders Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys and HCL Technologies have underlined the ongoing slowdown. And analysts see this spilling over to the next quarter as well. “The banking crisis in US regional banks and European banks in March 2023 has induced greater caution and could impact the June 2023 quarter. We would not be surprised by a weak US performance across companies that are likely to report in the coming days,” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. Analysts at JP Morgan have also highlighted the weakness in banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) and telecom verticals, which would impact Tech Mahindra and Mphasis as they have high exposure to these verticals. India’s IT sector likely to face macro headwinds until end 2023, say analysts

The company also announced that it would layoff 3500 employees as it sees revenues slowing further in 2023. The Nasdaq-listed company’s March quarter net profit grew 3% on year to $580 million. Meanwhile, its revenue declined 0.3% on year to $4.8 billion during the quarter. The company follows a January to December accounting year. Adding to the woes, Cognizant says full year guidance of 2023 is expected to be $19.2 - $19.6 billion, which would mean a decline of 1.2%. The next quarter revenue is expected to be at $4.83 - $4.88 billion, showing a decline of 0.6% to 1.6%, or a decline of 1.0% to flat in constant currency. Cognizant reported an operating margin of 14.6% for March quarter, which is lower than Indian IT giants TCS, Infosys, HCL Technologies and Tech Mahindra. For the full year 2023, the company has guided for adjusted operating margin to be in the range of 14.2%-14.7%. Following the peer IT major’s mixed bag of earnings which expects a decline in 2023 revenues, shares of most Indian IT companies were trading lower. It attributed the move to its NextGen program through which it expects to simplify its operating model and optimise corporate functions. “In the second quarter of 2023, we initiated the NextGen program aimed at simplifying our operating model, optimizing corporate functions and consolidating and realigning office space to reflect the post-pandemic hybrid work environment. Our drive for simplification will include operating with fewer layers in an effort to enhance agility and enable faster decision making,” the company said in a statement. Cognizant has a total headcount of 3.51 lakh in the March quarter, which is a decrease of 3,800 from the previous quarter. Its voluntary attrition rate declined to 23% in Q1 FY23 from 30% in Q1 FY22. "Our accelerated bookings growth in the quarter, which included several large deals and a healthy mix of new and expansion work, reflects the strengths of our services, our brand, and the longstanding relationships we have with our clients. I am also encouraged by the continuing reduction in our voluntary attrition," said Ravi Kumar S, CEO at Cognizant. “Having spent more than three months assessing the business, meeting with over a hundred clients and thousands of employees, I firmly believe Cognizant has a strong foundation for accelerating growth," said Kumar S in a statement.
