<ul><li><keyword id="6354919" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="LT" source="Orion">L&amp;T</keyword>’s board approved a buyback at a maximum price of ₹3,000 per share for an aggregate consideration of up to ₹10,000 crore.</li><li>Special dividend was announced to mark the end of A M Naik’s tenure with the company. </li><li>Stress in core segment margins will continue for next two quarters as it carries post-Covid, post-war overhang. </li><li></li></ul>Infrastructure major <keyword id="45475" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Larsen-Toubro" source="Orion">Larsen &amp; Toubro</keyword>’s (L&amp;T) Q1 consolidated net profit went up by 46% to ₹2,493 crore, from ₹1,702 crore in the same quarter last year. It also said the board of directors approved a share buyback at the maximum price of ₹3,000 each for an aggregate consideration of up to ₹10,000 crore. The proposal is subject to the approval of shareholders. The board also approved a special dividend of ₹6 per equity share to mark the end of chairman A M Naik’s extraordinary tenure with the company, said R Shankar Raman, L&amp;T's CFO said in an earnings conference call. Naik will retire as the non-executive chairman of the company in September this year, after which the current CEO &amp; MD S N Subrahmanyan will take over as its executive chairman and MD. Revenue guidance unchanged L&amp;T’s consolidated revenues went up 34% to ₹47,882 crore for the quarter, from 35,853 crore in Q1 of FY23. The company said that it was primarily aided by the execution of a healthy order book in its projects and manufacturing portfolio. However, Raman refused to change the goalpost of the revenue guidance of 12-15% given for FY24. “If all goes well, we will be at the upper end of the guidance,” he said. The company received orders worth ₹65,520 crore at the group level during the quarter, registering a y-o-y growth of 57%. International orders at ₹27,646 crore during the quarter comprised 42% of the total order inflow. The company said that orders were received across diverse segments like rail, renewables, rural water supply, transmission &amp; distribution, IT &amp; office space and onshore and offshore verticals of the hydrocarbon business, during the quarter. The consolidated order book of the group is at ₹4,12,648 crore as on June 30, 2023, with international orders having a share of 29%. “Capex buoyancy in India Gulf Cooperation Council is providing the much-needed tailwinds for growing our projects &amp; manufacturing portfolio, ably supported by the resilient performance of the services businesses,” said S N Subrahmanyan, CEO &amp; MD, Larsen &amp; Toubro. Core segment margins to remain stressed in near term Its infrastructure segment saw order inflows of ₹40,051 crore, double what was recorded in the same quarter last year. The EBITDA margin of the segment during the quarter, however, reduced to 5.1% vis-à-vis 6.5% recorded in the corresponding quarter. The infrastructure business orders that were executed during the quarter were won in the second half of FY22 and FY23. The pricing of these orders factors in inflationary trends seen in the post-Covid, post-War period, Raman said explaining the margin squeeze seen in the segment during the quarter. He added that this segment’s margins will continue to be subdued for the next quarter or two. “Improvement in margin trajectory will be seen only in Q4. In fact 2024-25 will be a far healthier period,” Raman said. In its outlook, the company said that major economies are turning around the corner. Major oil producing nations continue to invest in oil &amp; gas, industrialisation and energy transition initiatives, which will augur well for the company’s projects business. L&amp;T said that in the backdrop of this mixed sentiment, its focus will remain on cash generation and judicious capital allocation. “The company has a robust order prospects pipeline in the medium term and is confident of sustaining its growth momentum by utilising the emerging opportunities, with an overarching aim of improving shareholder value on a sustainable basis,” it said in a press release.

And the situation is unlikely to improve until the end of the year, analysts say. Amid the ongoing weakness in the sector, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have also sold their stakes in IT companies. FPIs turned bearish on the IT and oil and gas sector in March – between these two sectors, they <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/news/fpis-offload-it-oil-gas-stocks-worth-13734-crore-in-march/articleshow/99375107.cms">sold equities worth ₹13,734 crore. </a> Analysts expect pain to continue till end of 2023 Considering the macro economic challenges like high inflation, interest rates and banking crisis in the US and European regions, analysts expect it will be a watchful few quarters for the IT sector. "The biggest issue in the IT sector is growth slowdown and possibility of recession. So, as long as the slowdown persists and global growth remains uncertain, the market will expect lesser order flow, slower execution and pricing challenges. All these three factors will lead to IT companies suffering and valuations may also not expand. Investors will have to remain watchful for one to two quarters till there is some clarity on the global growth scenario," Deepak Jasani, head of retail research at HDFC Securities told Business Insider India. The IT majors’ recently-posted fourth-quarter results and FY24 growth predictions tell their own story about the sector’s ongoing struggles. For FY23, IT major Infosys reported a growth of 15.4% in constant currency terms, lower than the guidance of 16-16.5% that it had given <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/infosys-results-q3-fy23-infosys-raises-revenue-guidance-for-fy23-to-16-16-5/articleshow/96941824.cms">at the end of Q3</a>. Besides, it guided for a 4-7% revenue growth in FY24. This is the first time since FY16 that Infosys has guided for single-digit revenue growth in constant currency terms. Bigger rival Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reported a 11-quarter low constant currency revenue growth at $7.2 billion in Q4. TCS’ outgoing chief executive officer Rajesh Gopinathan said in a post-earnings conference that the company is seeing stress in one of its largest markets, North America. The recovery that the company had expected had not yet materialised. According to Sanjeev Hota, vice president, head of research at Sharekhan BNP Paribas, told Business Insider India, the macro uncertainty faced by the sector is unlikely to get better before 2-3 quarters. “(For) the entire calendar year, things look dicey and the industry may witness some kind of stability by the fag end of this year. US, North America, which are among the biggest markets for the sector, are not expected to improve in the near term." Banking crisis could impact June-quarter earnings The global growth slowdown has worked its way into the stock market performance of these companies with shares of the entire IT pack being beaten down significantly in 2023. The Nifty IT index is down 30% so far this year compared to a 3% fall in the broader Nifty50 index. The IT companies in India faced the heat after the banking crisis in the US and Europe erupted in March, triggered by the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in the US and the turmoil at Swiss lender Credit Suisse. IT majors like TCS, Infosys and Wipro have also neared their 52-week low since March considering IT companies’ exposure to US banks amid the banking sector crisis. BFSI clients are among the Indian IT companies’ largest clients. "Most of the price damage in the IT stocks has already been done. However, outperformance of the sector from the current level seems restricted till global macro headwinds stabilises. The sector valuation multiple is driven by earnings growth and if growth tapers off, there are little chances of the (IT) stocks outperforming the broader market indices,” added Hota. He, however, recommends staggered buying in TCS among the large caps and Persistent Systems from the mid-cap stocks, for long-term investors. The lower-than-expected growth in March quarter for sector leaders Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys and HCL Technologies have underlined the ongoing slowdown. And analysts see this spilling over to the next quarter as well. “The banking crisis in US regional banks and European banks in March 2023 has induced greater caution and could impact the June 2023 quarter. We would not be surprised by a weak US performance across companies that are likely to report in the coming days,” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. Analysts at JP Morgan have also highlighted the weakness in banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) and telecom verticals, which would impact Tech Mahindra and Mphasis as they have high exposure to these verticals. India’s IT sector likely to face macro headwinds until end 2023, say analysts

<ul><li>Mid-tier companies like L&amp;T Technology Services, Persistent Systems and Coforge are expected to report better growth than IT majors, say analysts. </li><li>Most of them are largely expected to deliver either a flat or a slight QoQ improvement in margins, with the exception of Cyient. </li><li>LTTS, which will see the full impact of SWC acquisition this quarter, is expected to deliver double-digit revenue growth but its margins are expected to be impacted. </li></ul>The Indian IT sector is bracing itself for a tough quarter and a year ahead, as organisations across the world are cutting down their discretionary spends, thanks to an uncertain economic outlook. Most IT sector companies are expected to present a muted earnings report card for the first quarter of FY24. Within the IT pack, mid-tier companies like L&amp;T Technology Services (LTTS), Persistent Systems and Coforge are expected to show better growth <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/it-companies-like-tcs-infosys-wipro-hcl-tech-q1-2023-24-earnings-preview/articleshow/101482733.cms">as compared to their larger peers</a>. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys are expected to show a flat revenue growth in constant currency (CC) terms QoQ, while Wipro is expected to post a decline. EBIT refers to earnings before interest and taxes. LTTS, which will see the full impact of SWC acquisition this quarter, is expected to deliver double-digit revenue growth but its margins are expected to be impacted. The net <keyword id="6362247" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="profit" source="Orion">profit</keyword> for the fiscal year was Rs 1,170 crore, also a 22 per cent jump (on-year). For the fourth quarter of FY23, the pure-play engineering services company recorded Rs 2,096 crore, a growth of 19 per cent YoY, with a net profit of more than Rs 309 crore, a 18 per cent growth. During the quarter, LTTS won a $40 million deal and three $10 million plus total contract value (TCV) deals. "FY23 was a landmark year for us as we crossed a billion dollars in revenue run rate and Rs 1,000 crore in annual profits. Our EBIT margin was the highest ever at 18.5 per cent driven by a strong focus on building a robust and sustainable operating model," said Amit Chadha, CEO and Managing Director, L&amp;T Technology Services Ltd. The combination of steady growth and expanding operating margin has led to an 18 per cent CAGR in profits over the last 5 years, he added. At the end of Q4 FY23, the patents portfolio of L&amp;T Technology Services stood at 1,090, out of which 727 are co-authored with its customers and the rest are filed by LTTS. The company currently has 22,233 employees. LTTS's customer base includes 69 Fortune 500 companies and 57 of the world's top ER&amp;D companies, across industrial products, medical devices, transportation, telecom &amp; hi-tech, and the process industries. "We are optimistic about the future and look for another year of strong growth as we partner with the top ER&amp;D companies globally in developing next generation products", said Chadha.
