<p>A passenger plane caught on fire Thursday at the Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport.</p><p>The fire had been put out as of about 1 p.m. ET Thursday, <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3295437/Passenger-plane-catches-fire-Fort-Laude.html?ito=social-twitter_dailymailus" target="_blank">according</a> to The Daily Mail. It was unclear if there were any immediate injuries.</p><p>The plane is a Boeing 767-269 operated by Dynamic Airways. These planes can carry upwards of 290 passengers. However, it is unclear how many passengers the plane was carrying at the time of the incident.&#xa0;</p><p>Based on the visible damage, the fire was concentrated around the jet's left engine. Talking to the press afterwards, he broke down in tears, calling the massacre that left 22 people dead and more than two dozen wounded "the worst thing I've ever been through in my life."</span></p><p><span>"What I did was exactly what I was supposed to do. I understand it was heroic and I'm looked at as a hero for it, but that wasn't the reason for me," Oakley, a 22-year-old automated logistics specialist assigned to the 142nd Combat Support Sustainment Battalion, 1st Armored Division Sustainment Brigade at Fort Bliss, <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/army-solider-hailed-hero-el-paso-shooting-worst/story?id=64773030">said</a> Sunday.</span></p><p><span>"I'm just focused on the kids that I could not [save] and the families," he continued in tears. "It hurts me. I feel like they were a part of me. I don't even know the people that died or the kids that I took with me."</span></p><p>&#xa0;</p><p>In a separate interview with Task &amp; Purpose, Oakley, who comes from an Army family, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/el-paso-shooting-texas-off-duty-soldier-hero-glendon-oakley-jr-2019-8">described</a> his recent deployment to Kuwait as "fine," but reportedly expressed disappointment that he didn't see combat. "I wanted to go to Iraq so bad," he said. I don't want to think about what happened because it was tragic. I'm telling you this was the worst thing I've ever been through in my life. And I don't want to keep having flashbacks of what happened," he told the press Sunday.</p><p>"I don't, I don't want to talk about what went on there because I just want to forget about it all," he added.</p><p>The off-duty soldier was shopping at the mall on Saturday when a gunman opened fire at the Walmart. Hearing the gunfire, he drew a concealed carry firearm and shifted into combat mode. "That's what you do," he explained to Task &amp; Purpose. "You pull your gun, you find cover, and you figure out what to do next."</p><p>Making his way out toward the exit with a group of people, he reportedly saw around a dozen children scared and calling out for their parents. He started grabbing kids, trying to get them out. Oakley, who has a goddaughter, said Sunday he was trying to "protect them like they were mine."</p><p>"I understand what I did was heroic, but I did that because that's what I was trained to do and that's what the military has taught me to do," he explained, adding that the "spotlight should not be on me right now." As he struggled to get through the interview, unidentifiable reporters called him an inspiration, stressing that his actions offered hope in a tragic moment.</p><div></div><div></div>

Yemen's Houthi rebel group claimed responsibility for the attacks, though the US has <a href="https://twitter.com/SecPompeo/status/1172963090746548225">pointed a finger towards Iran</a>. </p><p>The Saudi stock index TASI fell 2.3% on Sunday before recovering, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/saudi-arabia-drone-attack-means-for-oil-prices-2019-9?r=US&amp;IR=T&amp;_ga=2.236821378.2054549896.1568590709-2145792299.1566518976">Reuters</a> said. Other Gulf markets, including Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, also sank.</p><p>Some analysts predicted that the attack <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/saudi-arabia-drone-attack-means-for-oil-prices-2019-9">would have a big impact on global energy prices</a>. Oil prices rose significantly on Monday, with Brent crude trading at $66.52 per barrel on the oil futures market, according to the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2019/09/15/oil-prices-jump-after-weekend-drone-attack-saudi-arabian-oil-fields-infrastructure/">Washington Post</a>, a 10% jump from Friday's close of $60.15.</p><p>Saudi Arabia accounts for 10% of the global oil output, according to UAE-based paper <a href="https://www.thenational.ae/business/energy/saudi-arabia-has-sufficient-stocks-to-meet-shortages-for-three-months-analysts-say-1.911074">The National</a>. Lippman, a scholar at the Middle East Institute, said it was likely that China may be most affected by changes to Saudi Arabia's oil exports. </p><p>"This is not just 'Saudi Arabia's conflict' but an attack on the worldwide supply of oil," he told Business Insider. "The country most affected could be China, which has been the largest buyer of Saudi oil since 2009."</p><p>According to <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-saudi-aramco-china/china-condemns-attacks-on-saudi-oil-facilities-idUSKBN1W20SQ">Reuters</a>, Saudi Arabia is China's top oil supplier, year to date.</p><p>A <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2019/09/16/who-buys-saudi-arabias-oil/">Washington Post analysis</a> of 2018 imports of Saudi Arabian crude oil shows that it's not just China who may feel the heat. Japan inched out China, importing $31.2 billion to China's $29.7 billion in 2018. South Korea and India also imported high dollar amounts of crude oil from Saudi Arabia. </p><p>However, in terms of what percentage of oil came from Saudi Arabia in 2018, more than 90% of Bahrain and Jordan's crude oil came from Saudi Arabia.</p><p>Lippman added that while tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran have flared up over the incident, it is unlikely that they are headed towards a military conflict.</p><p>"Iran knows that a full-scale military conflict would bring down a destructive response from the United States, and the Saudis know it would mean crippling damage to more critical facilities along the Gulf coast  - not just oil installations but water desalination plants," he said. </p><p>And although President Trump said the US was "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-us-locked-and-loaded-saudi-aramco-oil-attack-2019-9">locked and loaded</a>" and ready to respond to the attack, Lippman says US intervention would "would not be good for anyone." </p><p>"Neither the US nor Saudi Arabia nor any of their friends is going to invade Iran, and Iran can't be bombed into submission, so it would be a war that nobody could win. China could be the biggest loser from the Saudi Arabia oil attack

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>A US MQ-9 Reaper drone aircraft was shot down over the Yemeni capital of Sanaa on Sunday, US officials confirmed on Monday.</p><p>Yemen's Houthi rebels claimed to have shot down the unmanned aircraft over the Jadar area on the northern outskirts of Sanaa. A military official was quoted by the Houthi-controlled SABA state <keyword id="6355005" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="News">news</keyword> agency <a href="https://www.sabanews.net/en/news475546.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">saying</a> the army and various militias brought it down, though it was not immediately clear what weapons were used.</p><p>It crashed on the outskirts of the capital around 11 a.m. local time, according to Reuters. Video <a href="https://twitter.com/BabakTaghvaee/status/914769421599723520" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">posted on Twitter</a> by journalist and author Babak Taghvaee shows the drone hurtling toward the ground while on fire and captures a crowd gathering around the wreckage.</p><p>There were no reports of casualties from the crash, and Houthi rebels loaded what was left of the drone on to a pickup truck, <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-yemen-security-usa/yemen-houthis-say-have-shot-down-u-s-surveillance-drone-state-news-agency-idUSKCN1C619H" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">according</a> to Reuters.</p><p>The <a href="http://www.af.mil/About-Us/Fact-Sheets/Display/Article/104470/mq-9-reaper/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">MQ-9 Reaper</a> is a long-endurance remotely piloted aircraft mostly used by the US Air Force.</p><p>It is primarily used for precision-strike and close-air-support missions and is capable of carrying Hellfire missiles and other guided bombs. It is also deployed for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions. It has a flight ceiling of up to 50,000 feet and a range of 1,150 miles.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>US Army Maj. Earl Brown, a spokesman for US Central Command, which oversees operations in the Middle East, <a href="https://www.defensetech.org/2017/10/02/mq-9-reaper-drone-shot-yemen-centcom/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">confirmed</a> that a Reaper drone was shot down in western Yemen. Brown provided few details, saying the incident was "under investigation."</p><p>The Houthi rebels, who have allied with ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh and are backed by Iran, control much of northern Yemen, including the capital.</p><p>They are fighting a Saudi-led coalition - which includes Egypt, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait and is backed by intelligence, weapons, and logistics from the US - that is trying to restore the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>The US has&#xa0;<a href="http://www.military.com/daily-news/2017/02/15/2-years-yemen-war-us-ramps-up-refueling-saudi-jets.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">increased</a> its refueling support for Saudi aircraft since the conflict began in early 2015.</p><p>The Saudi-led coalition has been <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-yemen-security-saudi-un/saudi-coalition-violated-law-with-yemen-funeral-strike-u-n-monitors-idUSKCN12K2F1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">accused of violating</a> international law with its bombing in Yemen. Houthi forces or their partners may have also <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/01/31/un-experts-say-yemen-opponents-may-have-committed-war-crimes/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">committed</a> war crimes.</p><p>More than <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-yemen-security-usa/yemen-houthis-say-have-shot-down-u-s-surveillance-drone-state-news-agency-idUSKCN1C619H" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">10,000 people</a> have been killed during the conflict. Two million people have been displaced by the fighting, and 750,000 people are thought to have contracted cholera.</p><p>The US is also fighting Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula in the region, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/value-of-intelligence-seized-in-yemen-raid-that-killed-seal-ryan-owens-2017-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">launching raids</a> and drone strikes against the group's militants. Video appears to show a US MQ-9 Reaper drone shot down over Yemen

Kim Campbell, an A-10 Thunderbolt II pilot here, shared her story with Women's History Month luncheon guests March 15, 2010, about a mission in which her A-10 was hit by enemy fire over Baghdad.</p><p>While deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, then-Capt. Campbell and her flight lead were flying over downtown Baghdad during a close-air-support mission April 7, 2003.</p><p>"We were originally tasked to target some Iraqi tanks and vehicles in the city that were acting as a command post, but on the way to the target area we received a call from the ground forward air controller or FAC, saying they were taking fire and needed immediate assistance."</p><p>The FAC ultimately turned out to be a member of the captain's squadron. Once over the target area, they descended below the clouds to positively identify the friendly troops and the enemy's location.</p><p>"We could see the Iraqi troops firing RPGs, or rocket propelled grenades, into our guys," she said. "It was definitely a high threat situation, but within minutes my flight lead was employing his 30 mm Gatling gun on the enemy location."</p><p>The two-ship formation of A-10s then made several passes over the enemy location, employing 30 mm bullets and high explosive rockets.</p><p>"Yes, there was risk involved, but these guys on the ground needed our help," Maj. Campbell said. "It's what any A-10 attack pilot would do in response to a troops-in-contact situation. "I knew I had been hit by enemy fire."</p><p>The jet rolled violently left and pointed at Baghdad and it wasn't responding to the captain's control inputs. This is when the pilot's flight training kicked in and she was able to react quickly.</p><p>After realizing both of her hydraulics systems were impaired, Maj. Campbell said she had to put the jet into manual reversion, as the back-up system. She said that manual reversion is a system of cranks and cables that allow the pilot to fly the aircraft under mechanical control.</p><p>"It was my last chance to try and recover the aircraft or I would be riding a parachute down into central Baghdad," she said.</p><p>Luckily, the jet responded and started climbing out and away from Baghdad.</p><p>Not wanting to eject over Baghdad, the two-ship maneuvered south to get out of the city. Anti-aircraft artillery fired at the jets from every direction.</p><p>"I couldn't do much to keep the jet moving so I was hoping that the theory of 'big sky, little bullet' would work in my favor," she said. The damage was sustained over Baghdad in spring 2003.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Due to the design of the A-10, Major Campbell said she couldn't see the damage to her jet, even with the use of her cockpit mirrors. Her flight lead flew closely beside her and performed an initial battle-damage check. He told her she had hundreds of small holes in the fuselage and tail section on the right side as well as a football sized hole on the right horizontal stabilizer. She then ran several emergency checklists and knew she had a decision to make.</p><p>"I could stay with the jet and try to land it or get to friendly territory and eject," she said.</p><p>With several positive factors on her side at that moment, such as the jet responding well and an experienced flight lead on her wing providing support, Maj. Campbell said she was confident she could get the jet back safely to her deployed home at base in Southwest Asia, nearly an hour away by flight.</p><p>As she approached the base, the crash recovery team was waiting for her, along with the rescue helicopters in case she had to eject. Fortunately, she was able to safely land the jet and stop it, using the emergency procedure for alternate breaking.</p><p>"I was impressed," said Lt. Col. Mike Millen, chief of the 355th Fighter Wing Commander's Action Group and an A-10 pilot. "Kim landed that jet with no hydraulics better than I land the A-10 every day with all systems operational."</p><p>During the time of this incident, Lt. Col. Campbell said her jet became the center of attention, as everyone was eager to see the damage, including her two crew chiefs.</p><p>"Both of my crew chiefs did tremendous work on that jet and it performed better than I ever could have expected," Maj. Campbell said. "We put an incredible amount of trust in these guys and they do great work."</p><p>As part of her presentation, Maj. Campbell, a 1997 graduate of the US Air Force Academy, showed the luncheon crowd photographs of the jets damage.</p><p>"I am incredibly thankful to those who designed and built the A-10 as well as the maintainers who did their part to make sure that jet could fly under any circumstances, even after extensive battle damage," said Maj. Campbell.</p><p>The major also explained that the next day she was returned to flying, and in fact supported a search and rescue mission to help find a downed A-10 pilot near Baghdad.</p><p>"I never really had time to think about the fact that I was going back to Baghdad where just the day before I had escaped a possible shoot down," she said. "In my mind, the only thing that I could think about was that I had a job to do. I knew that the search and rescue alert crews were there for me the day before and I was going to do the same for this pilot."</p><p>Maj. Campbell was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. This medal is awarded in support of operations by "heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight."</p><p>A year and a half later, Maj. Campbell deployed again, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. She has amassed 375 combat hours during her career.</p><p>"Major Campbell's story was nothing short of phenomenal," said 2nd Lt. How an Air Force pilot landed a damaged A-10 Warthog using just 'cranks and cables' after an Iraq War combat mission

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>A US ally reportedly used a Patriot missile to shoot down a drone aircraft worth just a few hundred dollars, according to a US Army general.</p><p>Gen. David Perkins, commander of the Army Training and Doctrine Command, <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-39277940" target="_blank">related the incident</a> to an audience at an Association of the US Army meeting in Huntsville, Alabama, on March 13.</p><p>Perkins relayed the anecdote when his remarks turned to how address threats at different levels of command.</p><p>"When we started first dealing with enemy unmanned aerial systems, the gut instinct was that's an air-defense problem. That's an air-defense problem because they're in the air," he said, adding:</p><p>Radar-guided Patriots are intended to <a href="https://www.cnet.com/news/someone-shot-down-a-200-drone-with-a-3m-patriot-missile/#ftag=YHF65cbda0?yptr=yahoo" target="_blank">intercept other missiles</a>, which would theoretically make them suitable for small, nimble targets like drones. But a single missile can cost between <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2017/03/15/us-ally-used-patriot-missile-to-shoot-down-small-drone.html" target="_blank">$2.5 million</a> and <a href="https://www.cnet.com/news/someone-shot-down-a-200-drone-with-a-3m-patriot-missile/#ftag=YHF65cbda0?yptr=yahoo" target="_blank">$3.4 million</a>.</p><p>As Perkins noted, the disparity between the price of the Patriot and the price of the drone calls the overall wisdom of the tactic into question.</p><p>"On the economic-exchange ratio, I'm not sure that's a good economic-exchange ratio," he told the audience. "In fact, if I'm the enemy, I'm thinking, 'Hey, I'm just going to get on Ebay and buy as many of these $300 quadcopters as I can and expend all the Patriot missiles out there.'"</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Perkins did not elaborate on the "ally" who launched the strike, its location, or the circumstances around the engagement.</p><p>Thirteen countries currently have Patriot air-defense systems, <a href="http://www.janes.com/article/68719/us-ally-shoots-down-small-uav-with-patriot-missile" target="_blank">according</a> to Jane's. A 2012 <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/world-20594466" target="_blank">BBC report</a> indicated that Israel, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates were among those countries.</p><p>Drones have proliferated in recent years, and ISIS fighters <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2017/03/15/us-ally-used-patriot-missile-to-shoot-down-small-drone.html" target="_blank">have put them to use</a> in their fight with Iraqi forces in Mosul, where they've used them to drop grenades on government forces and track and record suicide attacks. Drone recordings have become a feature the terror group's propaganda effort.</p><p>In an apparent acknowledgement of the challenge drones pose, the US Air Force <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2017/03/15/us-ally-used-patriot-missile-to-shoot-down-small-drone.html" target="_blank">recently ordered</a> net-filled shotgun shells for use in taking them down.</p><p>A drone-on-Patriot-missile engagement also illustrates how warfare and conflict have evolved as technology becomes less expensive.</p><p><span>"It certainly exposes in very stark terms the challenge which militaries face in attempting to deal with the adaptation of cheap and readily available civilian technology with extremely expensive, high-end hardware designed for state-on-state warfare," Justin Bronk, a researcher at the United Royal Services Institute, <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-39277940" target="_blank">told the BBC</a>.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>Bronk also noted that the Patriot's advanced radar systems may not be able to target small quadcopters or drones effectively.</span></p><p><span>Perkins said military officials had begun to look for more cost-effective countermeasures for unmanned aerial systems at different levels of command.</span></p><p><span>"So what we've done is look at it say this is a commander's problem. This is not an air-defense problem. This is a commander's problem," he said. </span></p><p><span>"We defined it from the very beginning, and now we're looking at, hey, there's ways to get after this with electronic warfare, with cyber. The 3-letter word that's missing from the showdown with Iran

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The sacking of Yemen's capital by </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"></span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/saudi-arabias-nightmare-is-now-unfolding-in-yemen-2015-1">Iranian-assisted Houthi rebels</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">hasn't been the week's only positive geopolitical development from Tehran's perspective.</span></p>
<p>On Jan. 18, Alberto Nisman, the Argentinian prosecutor responsible for investigating the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires - along with a suspected quid pro quo between the two country's governments partly aimed at concealing Iran's involvement in the attack - was found dead in his apartment.</p>
<p>Nisman was <a href="http://www.bloombergview.com/articles/2015-01-20/argentina-iran-and-the-mysterious-death-of-a-prosecutor">scheduled to testify to a parliamentary committee</a> the next day and was expected to accuse the government of president Cristina Fernandez Kirchner of swapping increased trade with Iran for a promise not to prosecute the Iranian officials who plotted the attack.</p>
<p>Nisman's assassination is tentatively being considered as a suicide, with the jurist felled by a single bullet wound to the head and clutching the gun that killed him. But there are indications that it may have been something much more sinister.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/argentina-special-prosecutor-found-fatally-shot-home-28318936">lack of an exit wound</a> suggested the fatal shot was fired at a further distance than Nisman could have managed had the wound been self-inflicted. His <a href="https://storify.com/aVecesSoyPau/opiniones-de-noga-tarnopolsky-sobre-la-muertedenis?utm_campaign=&amp;utm_source=direct-sfy.co&amp;utm_medium=sfy.co-twitter&amp;awesm=sfy.co_f0Bi6&amp;utm_content=storify-pingback">last WhatsApp</a> was a photo of stacks of documentation related to the next day's testimony and Nisman had apparently given his maid a grocery list for the following week. A <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/01/19/did-iran-murder-argentina-s-crusading-prosecutor-alberto-nisman.html">10-person government security detail</a> was reportedly pulled off of his apartment the night of his assassination. Most damningly, there was no gunpowder residue found on Nisman's hands, physical evidence that he didn't discharge a firearm prior to his death.</p>
<p>Theories abound as to who killed him and why. But no matter who's responsible for Nisman's death, the Iranian regime benefits.</p>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>After a decade of work, Nisman concluded that Iran's government planned and executed the 1994 carbomb attack on the <span>Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA)</span>, in which 85 people were killed.</p>
<p>As Washington Institute for Near East Policy scholar <a href="https://www.washingtoninstitute.org/uploads/Documents/testimony/LevittTestimony20130801.pdf">Matthew Levitt recounts</a> in his book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Hezbollah-Matthew-Levitt-ebook/dp/B00EA0C4XC">Hezbollah: The Global Footprint of Lebanon's Party of God</a>, Iranian <span>intelligence chief Ali Fallahian "was given overall operational responsibility for the attack," which was</span> approved <span>by Iran's Supreme National Security Council on August 14, 1993.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The act was carried out through a terrorist cell organized by an Iranian-born and Buenos Aires-based Shi'ite cleric named Mohsen Rabbani who had been given a sinecure at the Iranian embassy in Buenos Aires just months before the attack. Phone records connect the embassy to a number in Brazil's border region belonging to a safe-house used by agents from Hezbollah, the Iranian regime's adjunct in Lebanon, responsible for actually executing the attack.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The AMIA bombing was one of the worst anti-Semitic massacres anywhere on earth in decades. But it was part of what was then a consistent policy of big-ticket state-sponsored terrorism for Tehran's revolutionary regime, which had only been in power for 15 years at the time.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Iranian agents </span><a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2013/10/the-origins-of-hezbollah/280809/">assisted in Hezbollah and Shi'ite militia attacks</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> on the US Marine Barracks in Beirut, Lebanon in 1983, and on attacks on the US embassy in the city in 1984 and 1984, that killed 394 people total. Hezbollah and a second Shi'ite group </span><a href="http://www.washingtoninstitute.org/policy-analysis/view/29-years-later-echoes-of-kuwait-17">carried out of a series of attacks in Kuwait </a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">in 1983 that targeted the US and French embassies and nearly destroyed an oil terminal.</span></p>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Tehran <a href="http://www.worldaffairsjournal.org/article/assassins%E2%80%99-trail-unraveling-mykonos-killings">sent agents to assassinate</a> 4 leading Iranian-Kurdish opposition activists  in a Greek restaurant in Berlin in 1992, while pro-Iranian elements <a href="http://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_id=2&amp;objectid=11383506">carried out a series of attacks in Paris in the mid-80s</a> to punish France for its support of Saddam Hussein's government during the Iran-Iraq War.</p>
<p>In total, Iranian elements <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/01/19/did-iran-murder-argentina-s-crusading-prosecutor-alberto-nisman.html">assassinated 18 regime opponents</a> on European soil in the late 1980s and early 90s. And Tehran assisted in the Hezbollah attack on the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires that <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2013/03/hezbollahs-1992-attack-in-argentina-is-a-warning-for-modern-day-europe/274160/">killed 23 people in 1992</a>. </p>
<p>In 1997, Mohammad Khatami was elected president. He helped shift the regime's <keyword id="6356001" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="international">international</keyword> posture away from the kind of revolutionary confrontation that had dictated the Islamic Republic's foreign affairs up until that point.</p>
<p><span><span>Nevertheless,</span> Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guards continued to export terror with high-level regime approval while Khatami (1997 - 2005) helped re-fashion the Islamic Republic's image as a regime whose actions could be considered increasingly within the mainstream of acceptable international behavior, an objective that's been successfully advanced by Hassan Rouhani, the country's current and similarly reform-minded president.</span></p>
<p>In 2011 <span>Iranian agents were uncovered </span><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/12/us/us-accuses-iranians-of-plotting-to-kill-saudi-envoy.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=0">plotting to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the US</a><span> in 2011. And in</span> 2012 a Hezbollah suicide bombing targeted Israeli tourists in Burgas, Bulgaria, <a href="http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/1.584283">killing 6 people</a>. (Hezbollah operatives <a href="http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/analysis-iran-and-hezbollah-s-terror-escalation-against-israel-1.452953">came close to pulling off a major attack against the Israeli embassy in Bangkok, Thailand in 2012</a>.) <span>Aside from Shi'ite organizations like Hezbollah and Iraq's </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-special-report-the-fighters-of-iraq-who-answer-to-iran-2014-11">Badr Group</a><span>, the State Department's </span><a href="http://www.state.gov/j/ct/rls/crt/2013/224826.htm">2013 citation</a><span> of Iran group as a state sponsor of terrorism notes its support for Al Qaeda elements in Iraq, some of which later formed the Islamic State.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Consequently, the AMIA bombing is a reminder of a period in Iranian history that likely embassies many of the country's current crop of leaders: A time when blatant and essentially unprovoked attacks on civilian targets inside of foreign countries was one of the signal elements of the regime's "revolutionary" foreign policy. </span></p>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Twenty years after the AMIA bombing, Iran has successfully shed its pariah status while retaining terrorism as an instrument of policy. Nisman's investigation threatened to upset that balance, partly by exposing how Iran managed this feat in the first place.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">His specific allegation that </span><a href="http://www.bloombergview.com/articles/2015-01-20/argentina-iran-and-the-mysterious-death-of-a-prosecutor">high-ranking Argentinian politicians</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> had </span><a href="http://mida.org.il/2015/01/20/alberto-nisman-the-man-who-knew-too-much/">compromised the integrity of the investigation</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> into the AMIA bombing at Iran's behest only proved how badly political elites in both countries want the truth of the incident to remain buried. And it showed how Iran believed it could edge its way back to respectability while continuing to support and abet terrorism far beyond its borders.</span></p>
<p><span>Nisman's testimony would have shown that the AMIA bombing wasn't jut a discrete event, but an ongoing, two decade-long conspiracy that implicated Argentina and Iran in the execution and cover-up of a major act of terrorism. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Nisman's death may end up being part of that very conspiracy. His absence keeps the story buried: It</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> is now even less likely that the attack's Iranian plotters will face justice in Argentina (or countries with extradition treaties with Argentina), and his death shields Argentine leaders who treated the AMIA attack as an dreary diplomatic inconvenience rather than state-sponsored mass murder</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">However, Nisman believed the evidence he had collected would outlive him. Four days before his death, he told an Argentine TV interviewer that "With Nisman around or not, the evidence is there," <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/20/world/americas/alberto-nisman-found-dead-argentina-amia.html">according to the New York Times</a>.</span></p>
