Actor-turned-politician <keyword id="1518121" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kushboo-sundar">Kushboo Sundar</keyword> joined <keyword id="1205297" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Bharatiya-Janata-Party">the Bharatiya Janata Party</keyword> here on Monday, hours after she quit the Congress. Speaking to reporters at the joining ceremony, the actor from <keyword id="20154" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword> said she had come to the understanding over a period of time that if the nation has to move forward, then someone like Prime Minister Narendra Modi is needed to take the country "in the right direction and to its glory". A national spokesperson of the Congress, she resigned from the party protesting against what she called some leaders' "dictating terms" and "suppressing" her. She was with the DMK before joining the Congress in 2014. Assembly polls are due in Tamil Nadu in the first half of the next year, and the BJP hopes the her induction will be a boost to it. At 3.15 p.m, <keyword id="1518121" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kushboo-sundar">Kushboo Sundar</keyword> is trailing behind Dr. Ezhilan Naganathan who has garnered a whopping 58% of votes counted so far. Tamil superstar Kushboo is facing elections for the first time after the <keyword id="58687" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharatiya-Janata-Party">Bharatiya Janata Party</keyword> (<keyword id="14666" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword>) gave her a seat to fight from the Thousand Lights constituency. Kushboo sees a tough competition in this seat waged by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidate Dr. Ezhilan Naganathan, who is a medical practitioner cum social activist. An interesting constituency Thousand Lights constituency came to the limelight after Ku Ka Selvam, the DMK MLA quit his party for joining the BJP. Since then, political enthusiasts in the state have been actively watching the moves happening in the seat. In a surprise turn of events, the BJP state head decided to field actress Kushboo Sundar from this constituency for the 2021 state assembly elections as she joined the party quitting the <keyword id="1575" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword>. Kushboo’s debut Though Kushboo enjoys a star appeal among the masses and has had a long stint in politics, no party was willing to field her in the past during elections. Probably not getting a seat to contest was her prime reason to quit the Congress party. For the first time in the 2021 assembly elections, BJP has bagged the credit of investing in Kushboo’s popularity to check if it would turn the election results in its favour from the Thousand Lights seat. Dr Ezhilan Naganathan in the election scene Kushboo’s strong opponent Dr. Naganathan is highly hopeful of winning from this seat. He told reporters, “I started my clinic for the poor here in 2004, and most of my poor patients are also my prospective constituents today. They love seeing their doctor coming home and asking them for votes. They came to my clinic for treatment; now, I’m going to their homes as a candidate, seeking out votes.” Dr. Naganathan banks on his social activist and sensitive medical practitioner profiles to win the election saying, “I’m confident of winning because of my social activism — during the 2015 floods — and the fact that I treated nearly 2,000 patients during COVID-19.” Kushboo looks at her prospects of winning from the seat Kushboo is not new to politics. She has served two stints -- with regional party DMK and the other with the Congress. Thousand Lights has always been the stronghold of the DMK. One of the biggest setbacks Kushboo faces now is the fact that BJP could never independently realise its political dreams in Tamil Nadu. While answering a reporter’s question based on this statistics, Kushboo said, “Times are changing and mindsets are changing, and the DMK is losing control of its urban bastions.” She added further, “Five years ago, the AIADMK created history when Jayalalithaa was voted back to power for the first time in several years”, showing us how, J Jayalalithaa, the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu successfully broke the anti-incumbency election sentiments of the voters in 2016 elections. Kushboo wore a mysterious smile when she remarked, “If the DMK thinks that Thousand Lights is a bastion of theirs, I’d like to invite Mr MK Stalin to contest from here instead of having to go off to Kolathur ten years ago.” The election scene in Thousand Lights actually sees a one-on-one competition between two debutants. Whoever the election results will favour, it will be the victory of a debutant from this constituency. New Delhi, <keyword id="6355300" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="security">Security</keyword> has been further beefed up in the last couple of days at <keyword id="2802822" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Singhu-Border">Singhu border</keyword>, however, the agitating <keyword id="48857" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Farmer">farmer</keyword>s remain firm on their demands. Every protesting farmer at <keyword id="10719874" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="singhu-village">Singhu village</keyword> gives almost the same reply, "We won't go back till the three anti-farmer laws are taken back". Police barricades that were earlier put up at Singhu village, now have also appeared at Singhola village, which is around one-and-a-half km away from Singhu. Singhu and Singhola, these two Jat-dominated villages of northeast Delhi are located either side of the road - (Delhi-Panipat highway) which is blocked since November 26 due to the farmers' protests. Scores of farmers from Haryana and <keyword id="6354953" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="punjab">Punjab</keyword> have been protesting at Singhu against three the <keyword id="9970645" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="farm-laws">farm laws</keyword> passed by Parliament. These three laws are - The Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020. In the last one week, IANS spoke to a varied section of people and farmers at the Singhu protest site to get their views about three farm laws they have stood against and about their lives within multi-layer security for the last two months. Though most of them were not well aware of the contentious points of these three farm laws, they have their own stories of struggling as farmers. A group of farmers from various districts of Haryana sitting with their traditional hookahs in the middle raised their concerns that the new farm rules will end the mandi system and leave them dependent on corporate agents. Mahar Singh Talwandi, an old farmer in the group said, "We are worried that the government will end the mandi system and will give free hands to big companies. The Mandi system helps us to take money in advance and the people associated with the system are also familiar with farmers' issues." As to how the movement against three farm laws started in Haryana, Devender Singh, another old famer in the group said, "Government's laws are written in English and we old farmers do not know. But, we know farming and its rules. After the Government passed these farm laws, farmers in Haryana started meetings in villages and opposed farm laws. People those who are dependent on farming have reservations against these farms laws." While a middle-aged farmer who has come from Jind district in Haryana, sitting in the group added, "At present, the farmers in Haryana have no work to do on farmland for next two months. We are free and will stay here only." Young farmers at Singhu would often reply to any query slamming the BJP-run government, especially incidents on January 26 at Red Fort and scuffle due to stone-pelting at a protest site on January 28. They expressed their anger slamming the government for suspending internet services there, putting up barricades, blocking the place they are protesting, arrests of farmers, and many more issues. "BJP-led government first tried to divide farmers and then made several attempts to derail peaceful farm protests through its partymen. Many of us are students and we are here because of wrong policy (farm laws) by the government. We will not allow corporate companies to snatch our lands. We will fight until these anti-farm laws are repealed," said Sukhvir Singh, one of the farmers in the group. Satnam Singh, a farmer leader in the group added, "We will not talk with the government till all the farmers are out of jail. No matter how long the government will test farmers, we will sit here and will leave this place only after these three farm laws are taken back."
