With the further easing of coronavirus-induced curbs in Maharashtra, some salons opened in Mumbai on Sunday after a gap of three months while many remained closed due to lack of manpower. The parlours and salons falling under the COVID-19 containment zones did not open. Salon owners, who opened their shops for restarting business, said they were adhering to the government's guidelines like checking temperatures of their customers, asking them to use hand sanitisers before entering the premises, and serving customers in small batches. Some, however, complained of low turnout, saying people were scared of availing salon services. The Maharashtra government earlier said salons and beauty parlours will be allowed to reopen from Sunday with restricted entry and <keyword id="9371558" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="prior-appointments">prior appointments</keyword> for customers. A revised set of guidelines, issued as part of the government's 'Mission Begin Again' phase four, said only <keyword id="9478230" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="select-services">select services</keyword> like hair cut and dyeing, waxing and threading will be allowed as of now in these outlets. <keyword id="3540366" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shailesh-Surve">Shailesh Surve</keyword>, owner of 'Make Over' salon in Worli, said they opened their facility but were allowing customers in small batches. "We are taking three customers each in time slots from 10 am to noon, 12 noon to 3 pm and 3 pm to 6 pm. Customers are approaching us for appointments, but we are not allowing everybody as we have to follow the government's norms," he said. Surve said they were recording the temperature of customers and providing them hand sanitisers on entering the premises. "We are using fresh towels for every customer and sanitising chairs used for haircuts. I opened my shop today at around 8 am and got a good response on the first day. We were sitting at home since the last three months, but now we can earn," he said. However, Irshad Khan, owner of a salon in suburban Santacruz, said he opened his outlet after three months but did not get the same response as he used to get on a Sunday earlier. "There was low turnout today...people are scared, hence they are avoiding visit to salon," he said. Parvez Ansari, a salon owner from <keyword id="6369995" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="bandra-kurla-complex">Bandra-Kurla Complex</keyword> (BKC), said he did not open his facility due to lack of staff. "I have to keep my shop shut till my staff members do not return from their native places," he said. The state government in its notification on Thursday said skin-related services will not be allowed at present and this should be prominently displayed outside shops. "Employees must put protective gear, including gloves, aprons and masks. All workspace (chairs) must be sanitised after each service. Also, all common areas and floors must be sanitised after every two hours," it said. Disposal towels and napkins must be used on customers, while non-disposal equipment should be sanitised and sterilised after each service, the government order said. Each shop must put up a notice listing precautions for customers, the notification said. At least four persons were killed and one went missing in Mumbai and Thane as heavy rain clobbered the country's commercial capital since Monday night with the state government declaring a holiday in the city and the <keyword id="6361772" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai-metropolitan-region">Mumbai Metropolitan Region</keyword> areas, officials said here on Tuesday. The day was marked with flooding in several parts of the city, a major landslide on the Western Express Highway, an incident of a double house crash, over 100 trees crashing and several emergency incidents of electric short-circuits. In the double house crash incident in Santacruz, Rekha M. Kakade and her 18-month old infant daughter Jahnavi were washed away and drowned in a swollen drain. Another daughter Shivanya was rescued safely but a third daughter is still missing, said BMC Disaster Control. <keyword id="9701050" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="rakib-a-mandal">Rakib A. Mandal</keyword>, 15, was electrocuted and died on the spot when he came in contact with a live wire of street light on Ghodbunder Road in Thane, while a man was washed away in the floods in Navi Mumbai, said the local police. Mumbai city recorded 25.2 cms while the suburbs notched 26.8 cms of rain in the past 24 hours, throwing normal life out of gear in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad (the MMR areas), and catching commuters unaware. The Central Railway's Harbour Line was stopped from the Kurla-Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and trains crawled on the main lines, but <keyword id="9402731" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-western-railway">the Western Railway</keyword> suspended services between Bandra-Churchgate, owing to flooding in Dadar and surrounding areas. After rains subsided in the afternoon, all train services resumed normal operations. Road traffic was badly hit in the city and the entire MMR region with the BEST diverting its buses on at least 25 routes all over the city, including Dadar, Kings Circle, Parel, Wadala, Chembur, Kurla, Sion and Bandra owing to waterlogging in these areas. A massive landslide on the Western Express Highway between Kandivali-Malad paralysed south-bound traffic at dawn on Tuesday, but there were no casualties. Soon afterwards, the <keyword id="53938" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brihanmumbai-Municipal-Corporation">BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation</keyword> deployed six JCBs to start work of clearing the debris, stones and the highway is likely to be cleared for operations soon. BMC Commissioner I.S. Chahal, accompanied by top officials P. Velrasu, Chandrashekhar Chore, Sanjay Rathod and others went around various flooded spots in south Mumbai and supervised the anti-flooding operations undertaken. Homes or shops were flooded in slums or low-lying areas in the suburbs of Malad, Kurla, Ghatkopar, Parel with people struggling to save their valuable belongings from the water. Flooding was reported in Dadar, Prabhadevi, Bhendi Bazaar, Sir J.J. Hospital Junction, Kurla, Chembur, Tilak Nagar, Sion, Wadala, Mankhurd, Bandra, Andheri, Kandivali and other parts. The Mithi River was swollen at Dahisar, Borivali, Kandivali and Goreagaon and running above the danger level, forcing many on their banks to evacuate their dwellings with the authorities remaining alert for any eventuality. The main subways in Khar, Andheri, Malad and Dahisar were also flooded and all vehicular traffic stopped on both sides. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway, the old Mumbai-Pune highway, major or arterial roads in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad were heavily waterlogged or flooded, stranding many vehicles in 3-4 feet deep waters, and causing traffic snarls. The IMD has forecast spells of more heavy to very heavy rainfall in the city and surroundings over the next 24 hours, besides a high tide with a swell of 3.98 metres early on Wednesday. Heavy rains in Mumbai — IMD issues red alert, government offices declare holiday

According to railway sources, suburban services were stopped due to water-logging on tracks at Palghar station. Thakur, however, said despite heavy rains in various suburbs, the Western Railways suburban services were running normal between Churchgate and Dahanu Road. On the central line, there was water-logging on tracks in Sion and <keyword id="9704955" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="kurla-areas">Kurla areas</keyword> and trains were running with some delays, sources said. Central Railway's chief spokesperson <keyword id="8859" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shivaji">Shivaji</keyword> Sutar said their suburban services, from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to Kasara (Thane), Khopoli (Raigad), Panvel (Navi Mumbai) and Goregaon, were running despite the heavy showers. Both the Central Railway and Western Railway are operating nearly 350 special train services each daily for those working in essential and emergency services. Bus services of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), the city civic body's transport wing, were also affected due to water-logging on some roads. A BEST spokesperson said their services were diverted on more than 30 routes, including two locations in Thane district, till 9 am. The weather station at Dahanu in Palghar recorded 364 mm rainfall in the 12-hour period ending at 5.30 am on Wednesday, IMD Mumbai centre's deputy director general K S Hosalikar said. Besides, the weather station at Bhayander in Thane recorded 169 mm rainfall while the one at Mira Road reported 159 mm during the same period, he said. As per IMD's website, Thane city, Dombivli and Kalyan areas, which are part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), received more than 120 mm rainfall during the same period. "The cloud activity indicates that there would be one more intense rainfall day on Wednesday, Hosalikar tweeted. "Heavy to very heavy with isolated extremely heavy rains possible in next 24 over entire Konkan region. In North Konkan the impact could be more including Thane, Mumbai and Palghar, he said. Parts of south Madhya Maharashtra and adjoining Marathwada region are also likely to get very heavy rainfall, along with intense spells, he said. "With formation of low pressure area on Tuesday in North Bay, as forecast by the IMD, it has resulted into strengthening of lower level southerly winds over Arabian sea. It has brought heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in and around Mumbai, Hosalikar said. Since Tuesday night, the western suburbs here received 82.43 mm rain, followed by eastern suburbs-69.11 mm and the island city-45.38 mm, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said. The Pune district also received 59 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours and it is likely to witness moderate to isolated heavy showers in next two days, an IMD official said. The catchment areas of four dams - Varasgaon, Khadakwasla, Panshet and Temghar which provide water to the city - received good rainfall. Pune Mayor Murlidhar Mohol said since good rainfall is predicted by the IMD, the city is not likely to face any water cuts till the Ganesh festival, which begins on August 22. In western Maharashtra, 1,139 cusec water was discharged from Koyna dam, and at least 80 bunds (weir) on the Pancnhganga river in Kolhapur district were submerged, the district administration said. Non-stop heavy rains in Mumbai affect local train and bus services

In continuation with its project to provide high-speed public <keyword id="47655" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wi-Fi">Wi-Fi</keyword> service at 100 Railway stations across India by end of the year, <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> on Monday announced the launch of its free high-speed public Wi-Fi service at Ujjain, Jaipur, Patna, Guwahati and Allahabad railway stations. 

	Minister of Railways Suresh Prabhu will formally inaugurate the service at these stations soon, it said.
 

	Google said it has been deploying the service over the extensive fibre network of Indian Railway's arm Railtel which provides Internet services as RailWire.
 

	With these launches, the service is now live and available to users at 15 stations across the country, it added.
 

	Backed by the "phenomenal" response to the service in Mumbai Central, Google will also extend the project to cover key suburban Mumbai stations working with RailTel.
 

	Google will deploy the service in Dadar, Bandra Terminus , Churchgate, Thane, Kalyan, Panvel, Vashi, Kurla, Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus, Borivali and a few others, it added.
 "We're seeing incredible usage of the Wi-Fi service across the stations and over 2.5 lakhs users are using the service every week, demonstrating more than 2x growth in less than a month," <keyword id="45395" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google-India">Google India</keyword> Head of Access Programs Gulzar Azad told PTI. 

	Stating that Google is committed to working with Indian Railways and Railtel to deliver high-speed Wi-Fi network that will be available to 10 million Indians by the end of the year, covering 100 of the busiest train stations in India, it said the project will be eventually rolled out to cover 400 train stations across India.
 The Railtel-Google free high-speed public Wi-Fi service is currently available at Mumbai Central, Pune, Bhubaneshwar, Bhopal, Ranchi, <keyword id="45327" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Raipur">Raipur</keyword>, Vijayawada, Kacheguda, Ernakulum Junction, Vishakhapatnam, Jaipur, Patna, Guwahati, Ujjain and Allahabad.

Google launches free Wi-Fi services at 5 railway stations

<keyword id="19895282" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mumbai" source="keywords">Mumbai</keyword> city recorded over 300 mm of rainfall at various places in six hours from 1 am to 7 am today, according to the <keyword id="20052950" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brihanmumbai-Municipal-Corporation" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation">Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation</keyword> (<keyword id="19914133" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BMC" source="keywords">BMC</keyword>). Some trains were also cancelled following heavy rains, according to the Central Railways. Heavy rains in some low-lying areas led to <keyword id="19900584" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="waterlogging" source="keywords">waterlogging</keyword> and disruption of suburban train services, said the civic body. "Heavy <keyword id="19991168" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rain" source="keywords">rain</keyword> is also expected today. In order to avoid inconvenience to students, a holiday for the first session is declared for all BMC, government and private schools and colleges in Mumbai (BMC area). The decision for the next session will be announced after reviewing the situation," the civic body said in a statement. The Civic body also said that the entire machinery of the BMC is working in the field. It has also requested Mumbaikars not to believe in rumours. Water-logging was reported from Worli, Buntara Bhavan, in Kurla East, King's Circle area of Mumbai, Dadar and Vidyavihar Railway Station. At King's Circle in rain-hit Mumbai, a commuter said, "My car is stuck on the road. There is no point in blaming the government for the rains. The government is doing its job." The Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) said in a statement that Central Railway suburban services were affected due to heavy rains. "Train services are affected at Sion and between Bhandup and Nahur stations. Rainwater was above the tracks so trains were stopped for nearly an hour. Now the water has receded a bit so trains are restarting but services are still affected," the CPRO said. Central Railway said traffic on the sub-urban and Harbour Line trains was delayed due to waterlogging. The stations that were affected include Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Kurla- Vikhroli &amp; Bhandup. Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) said that many of its buses were diverted due to waterlogging. Heavy rain lashes parts of Mumbai; More showers expected today

The rain gods went a tad bit crazy over <keyword id="19895282" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai" source="keywords">Mumbai</keyword> yesterday, emptying buckets of rain from the heavens. In the span of a few hours, between 1 AM and 7 AM last night and early this morning, the city has reportedly recorded over 300 mm of rains in various parts of Mumbai. And these downpours were enough to bring the financial capital’s creaky infrastructure to its knees. Several key roads, including those near King's Circle in Dadar, were submerged underwater, causing traffic gridlock and disrupting commutes. The relentless rain caused severe waterlogging in several other areas too, with reports of knee-deep water in Buntara Bhavan in Kurla East and Powai. This led to the diversion of many BEST buses from their regular routes, causing further inconvenience for commuters. Flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were also impacted. Airlines like IndiGo and Vistara advised passengers to expect delays and heavy traffic congestion while travelling to the airport. IndiGo even offered passengers flying into or out of Mumbai the option to rebook their flights or get a full refund due to the weather conditions. Train services, a lifeline for Mumbaikars, were not spared either. The Central Railway's suburban network faced delays due to waterlogging at stations like CSMT, Churchgate, and LTT. However, the Western Railway managed to clear tracks using high-capacity water pumps, ensuring normal operations in their suburban section. Further, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) prioritised student safety by declaring a holiday for the first session in all BMC, government, and private schools and colleges within their jurisdiction. The decision on afternoon classes was to be made later based on the evolving situation, but a holiday has been declared for all schools and colleges today. Citizens took to social media to share their experiences, posting videos and updates on waterlogged streets and areas to avoid. However, Mumbai’s skirmish with the torrential rains is hardly over yet. <h2>Heavy rains to continue pounding Mumbai and nearby districts </h2>The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast up to widespread rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over various parts of Maharashtra over the next five days. During this period, heavy rains (64.5 mm-115.5 mm) are likely over Konkan, Goa and Madhya Maharashtra until Friday. Mumbai’s Regional Meteorological Centre had earlier issued a yellow alert for rain in Mumbai and surrounding areas. With heavy rain expected to continue, citizens are advised to stay cautious and avoid venturing out unless absolutely necessary. Mumbai, The Maharashtra government on Tuesday announced that a <keyword id="20840338" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pod-taxi" source="keywords">pod taxi</keyword> service will be launched to ease commute to the business hub of Bandra-Kurla Complex. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has approved a <keyword id="20845196" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pod" source="keywords">pod</keyword> taxi service on the 8.8 km route between <keyword id="19907248" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bandra" source="keywords">Bandra</keyword> and Kurla railway stations, the chief minister's office said in a release. Pod taxis are small automated cars that operate on a network of specially built guideways. With a capacity of six passengers each, the pods will run at the speed of 40 km per hour and will have 38 halts, it stated. The project will be implemented on a public-private partnership basis and will ease the commute to <keyword id="20004113" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bkc" source="keywords">BKC</keyword> from the two railway stations. The project on the busy Bandra-BKC-Kurla route is expected to cost Rs 1016 crore, an MMRDA official said. A reputed consultant has conducted the techno-economic feasibility study for <keyword id="20845197" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="this-automated-rapid-transit-system" source="keywords">this Automated Rapid Transit System</keyword>. "It will take three years to build the Advance Rapid Transit System after receiving all the necessary permissions," the official said. He said Chief Minister <keyword id="19913631" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="eknath-shinde" source="keywords">Eknath Shinde</keyword> has given his approval for issuing a tender for POD taxis on the route. Every day, more than 4 lakh passengers travel to BKC for work, and as per the feasibility report, 1.09 lakh people are expected to use the POD taxi service by 2031, the official added. "Daily 1.09 lakh passengers are expected to travel on these POD taxis by 2032 and the estimated per km travel cost is Rs 21 per kilometre. This (POD Taxi) will not only help people who will get down at BKC, but it will also provide first and last-mile connectivity in the stretch," said the official. MMRDA is the regional planning and executing body for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region that includes some areas in neighbouring Thane, Raigad and Palghar districts along with Mumbai.

Similarly, due to flooded tracks near Kurla, the mainline services between Thane-CSMT were suspended, though the CR operated shuttles between Thane-Karjat, Thane-Kasara and Vashi-Panvel sectors. The WR Spokesperson Sumit Thakur said that due to waterlogging at Wadala station, all Harbour Line trains on the Andheri-CSMT routes were suspended till further notice, and water pumps were deployed to drain out the excess water from the railway tracks. Stretches of the Eastern Express Highway, Western Express Highway, major roads like SV Road in the west and LBS Marg in the east besides other roads and lanes were flooded hampering vehicular movement and resulting in traffic snarls. In some parts of Malad, Khar, Kurla water seeped into building compounds or ground floor flats as rain accompanied by thunder, lightning and strong winds lashed the city. Subways at Andheri, Malad and Kandivali experienced waterlogging though traffic or pedestrian movements had not been hit, as the city will experience a major high-tide of 4.16 metre 11.43 am onwards.
