And this time around, here’s a <keyword id="2059277" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Homegrown-dating-app">homegrown dating app</keyword> that helps one find his/her match on <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword>. <keyword id="2059272" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Krush">Krush</keyword> is an <keyword id="956764" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Android-app">Android app</keyword> that introduces you to the single <keyword id="343" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Friends">friends</keyword> of friends on the social media site. Simply put, it uses your Facebook data and takes in several points such as age, gender, profession, interests, etc., to find a ‘suitable’ match who is right there among the friends of your FB connects (which means he/she is not exactly a stranger and you have at least one common connect).<br />

The app has been developed by a three-person tech start-up from Bangalore and the beta version has been launched in January this year. Krush can be <strong><a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.krushapp.krush&amp;hl=en">downloaded</a></strong> for free from <keyword id="6369511" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google-Play-Store">Google Play Store</keyword> and the <keyword id="75489" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IOS">iOS</keyword> version will be released on the Valentine’s Day (February 14), according to <keyword id="2059273" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajat-Rao">Rajat Rao</keyword>, the co-founder and CEO of Krush. He also claims that the app has been downloaded over 8,500 times since its beta launch and the Windows version will come up in the near future. To download Krush, you will require <keyword id="6355645" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="android">Android</keyword> 2.3.3 or up. Last we checked, the <keyword id="2059284" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="App-rating">app rating</keyword> stood at 4 on <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> Play.<br />

<strong>How Krush works</strong><br /> It’s pretty simple, really. Just log in using your Facebook account and the app does the rest. Think of Krush as your <keyword id="2059285" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Personal-matchmaker">personal matchmaker</keyword> that understands who you are, going by your Facebook data (age, location, likes, interests, activities, etc.), and subsequently matches you with compatible friends of friends. The app sends you 10 <keyword id="2059286" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Daily-dates">daily dates</keyword> and you can ‘<keyword id="98821" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="like">like</keyword>’ or ‘skip’ those – anonymously. If you like a ‘match’ and the other person also likes you back, Krush breaks the ice and introduces the two of you. But unless there is a ‘<keyword id="2059288" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Like-back">like back</keyword>’ and the feelings are mutual, users can’t contact each other, thus ensuring privacy and safety.<br />
<br /> There are other premium safety features as well, which make Krush stand out. For instance, every date suggested by the app also features at least one mutual friend. This goes a long way in ensuring that you only see people who come from a <keyword id="2059296" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Similar-background">similar background</keyword>. Moreover, Krush never shares your phone number, exact location or other personal details. Finally, the ‘likes’ and ‘skips’ happen anonymously – so there’s no feeling of rejection either.<br />
<br /> We came across a small hitch as well and found that the app also picks up matches from the list of <keyword id="1757502" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="FB-friends">FB friends</keyword>, instead of limiting itself to friends of friends. “That only happens when Krush can’t find a <keyword id="1522299" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="suitable-match">suitable match</keyword> among friends of friends,” explains Rajat. It does not really matter, though, and makes us feel that the ‘surprise’ element has not really gone out of dating even in this age of technology. Chances are some of these ‘friends’ never got down to expressing their feelings and Krush may just provide that freak chance to get them going this V-Day.<br />

But even the default premises of the app keep the surprise element alive. There are friends of friends who didn’t even know that their matches existed until they used Krush. In fact, quite a few users are surprised to discover so many interesting people (via Krush) who are just one degree of separation away, but practically invisible.<br />
<br /> Right now, the focus is not on <keyword id="2059303" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="App-monetisation">app monetisation</keyword>. But going forward, revenues can be generated via <keyword id="2059304" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="User-fee">user fee</keyword> and also through partnership with <keyword id="2059306" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Food-beverage-chains">food &amp; beverage chains</keyword>, so that couples have plenty of options for going out. But ask Rajat why the threesome opted for a <keyword id="1095218" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dating-app">dating app</keyword> instead of a utility app and pat comes the reply – it’s the need of the hour. “People want to date but can’t muster enough courage to meet people, especially if they are strangers. But Krush being anonymous, one can safely express interest without compromising on safety and privacy,” he explains. The idea came to Rajat when he was in college and had to tactfully ward off requests for introduction to girls he happened to know. “Sometimes, I had to ask for introduction and suddenly realised there had to be an easier way to <keyword id="2059308" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Connect-with-friends-of-friends">connect with friends of friends</keyword>. That’s how Krush started,” he adds.<br />

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Irina Krush win her seventh US Chess Championship the past weekend in St. Louis. In doing so, she notched her fourth consecutive US title and became without question the best American woman player of her generation and, really, in history.</p><p>It didn't come easy for Krush. Although she was the only Grandmaster in the women's side of the 12-player, 11-round tournament, she slipped back in the standings early and had to win four games in a row to set up a opportunity to snag the title with a draw in her final game (with the white pieces) against Katerina Nemcova.</p><p>In retrospect, however, Krush's win was easier than her victory last year, when she defended her title in tie-breaker rounds.</p><p>This year, her run began with a decisive win over Annie Wang, the youngest player in the field at age 12. Wang became a Master at age 11, a pretty stunning achievement. Her presence in the US Championship was extra-special for me because she's from Southern California - where my I and my family used to live - and has worked with worked with an organization there called Beyond Chess that my son, James, has also spent some time with.</p><p>But she was no match for Krush, who won her first US Championship when she was 14, making her the youngest woman winner ever. Krush commented that she'd like to keep on competing, perhaps challenging the record of Gisela Gresser, a 9-time champion, with titles in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. </p><p>Interestingly, while there are many more male GMs and highly ranked male players, we now have plenty of women in the game - and no reason why over time women and men couldn't more frequently play each other at the top levels. In some tournaments, they already do (Krush's GM title, by the way, is the equivalent of a man's - she isn't a "Woman Grandmaster" of WGM, due her high rating, and its worth noting that the GM title has been gender-neutral for decades).</p><p>Krush's comment about Gresser was classy and demonstrated the Ukranian-born GM's grasp of chess history (she came to the US when she was 4 and now hails from Brooklyn). Of course, women's chess in Krush era is a lot more demanding that when Gresser played - the talent pool is deeper, players start a lot younger, the coaching is more intense, and computer analysis enables players to far more deeply prepared than in the past. </p><p>For Krush, now 31, the obvious question is, "Can she contend for the World Championship crown?" That title is currently held by <span> </span>Mariya Muzychuk of Ukraine, although she captured it through a "knock-out" tournament format that saw the previous World Champ, Hou Yifan of China, decline to play.</p><p>Krush is in the top 30 in the world, but although women's chess has grown by leaps and bounds over the past decade, there isn't as well-established a global circuit for female players as there is for men. Krush is known for her contributions to U.S. international team titles, but her ranking is also significantly below that of the women in the world top 10.</p><p>In the US Championship, held at the stupendous Chess Club &amp; Scholastic Center of St. Louis, Krush stumbled early, with a loss to Nazi Paikidze, a 21-year-old who ended up in second-place tie (Paikidze is from for former Soviet republic of Georgia and only switched her affiliation recently when she came to US to play for the powerhouse chess team at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County). </p><p>I won't go through the entire game, just show the final position. There wasn't much Krush could do about that phalanx of white pawns marching down the center of the board - especially given that her black rook on a6 is unable to move across the 6th rank:</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Obviously, Krush cut a swath through much of the rest of the field, but she did get outmaneuvered by Paikidze, something that doesn't fit Krush's style, which is to play powerful chess, exerting strategic dominance over her opponents while looking for tactical possibilities.</p><p>She might have missed her longtime rival, Anna <span>Zatonskih, but she won the tournament by a full point (8.5/11), vindicated her ranking and position in the field as the favorite, and bolstered her legend.</span></p><p><span>But don't think she's some kind of scary juggernaut. Although she's intimidating, she has a shaggy, slightly punk edge, a pile of not-always-too-carefully arranged hair spilling everywhere and a fashion sense that suggests a Sleater-Kinney groupie more than a Chess Life cover girl (which doesn't mean she can't pull off a dress with aplomb - see below). This woman just became the greatest American female chess player in history

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>Facebook told US lawmakers that while it imposed new data-sharing restrictions on the majority of app developers in May 2015, 61 companies received a special "one-time" extension.</strong></li><li><strong>The list of companies includes Nike, Spotify, and UPS. </strong><strong>It is unclear why these companies, in particular, received the extension.</strong></li><li><strong>In addition, Facebook found five companies which theoretically could have accessed restricted friends' data as a result of beta tests.</strong></li><li><strong>The revelation comes after the Cambridge Analytica scandal in which the data of 87 million Facebook users was compromised.</strong></li></ul><p><br />Facebook has confessed to breaking its own rules to give 61 companies special access to user data.</p><p>In a <a href="https://docs.house.gov/meetings/IF/IF00/20180411/108090/HHRG-115-IF00-Wstate-ZuckerbergM-20180411-SD003.pdf?mod=article_inline">747-page document handed to the US House of Representatives' Energy and Commerce Committee on Friday,</a> Facebook said app developers could request Facebook data including name, gender, birthdate, location, photos, and page likes.</p><p>In April 2014, Facebook introduced a new, more restricted API (application program interface) which required that new apps go through a review and approval process, and prevented new apps from accessing friends' data without review. It also gave users more granular controls over what data an app operating on the new platform could access.</p><p>Most already-existing apps on the platform had until May 2015 to comply with these changes before being migrated to the new API, and becoming subject to the new review and approval process. Facebook relaxed its own rules to give these 61 companies special access to user data

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Spectrum Studios</span></p><p class="caption">Fabiano Caruana, fresh off losing his chance to face Magnus Carlsen.</p></div><p></p></div></div>The US Chess Championship and US Women's Chess Championship <a href="http://www.uschesschamps.com/">are underway in St. Louis</a>. </p><p>On the women's side, 2015 champion Irina Krush is shooting for history and her 8th title, putting her just one behind Gisela Kahn Gresser, a mid-20th-century player who dominated the game in her era. Krush is currently trailing the leaders by half a point.</p><p>On the men's side, the field is phenomenally strong - possibly the "strongest ever," according to Grandmaster Maurice Ashley, who dropped by Business Insider's offices before the tournament kicked off to discuss all things chess, including his historic induction into the US Chess Hall of Fame, the first African-American to be according the honor. (Ashley is part of a superb commentary team, among the best in all of sports, that has once again reassembled for the the US Championships; he joins US champs Yasser Seirawan and Jennifer Shahade.)</p><p>Three men from the world's top 10 are in the field: US number one and world number three Fabiano Caruana; US number two and world number six Hikaru Nakamura; and US number three and world number 10 Wesley So. Fleshing out the rest of the men's lineup is a welter of promising young players and veterans, including GM Gata Kamsky, a former US champion.</p><p>Both Caruana and Nakamura came to St. Louis - home to the Chess Club and Scholastic Center, the most impressive chess venue in the US - immediately after the Candidates Tournament in Moscow, where Carauana narrowly missed a chance to challenge World Champion Magnus Carlsen for his crown later this year and become the first American World Champion since Bobby Fischer in 1972.</p><p>Caruana, 23, had every right be devastated by the loss to Sergey Karjakin, a Russian GM who will face Carlsen in New York in November. But Caruana came to St. Louis in good form and with good humor - and he's now tied for the lead with So. Both players have 6 points and haven't yet lost a game.</p><p>Importantly, Caruana notched a win against Nakamura, who easily won the tournament last year. It was a smashing game, with Nakamura essaying the ultra-sharp <span>Najdorf variation of the </span>Sicilian Defense as black and for much of the game looking like he had solid chances with his bold style of play - until Caruana, one of the finest calculators of lines in the game, found a crushing move that refuted a rook sacrifice by Nakamura, leading to a resignation.</p><p>Here's how it went down.</p><p>Nakamura is driving forward an attack on white's kingside, but his queen is awkwardly placed on the other side of the board and Caruana has threats of his own against the weekly defended black king (there are only those two pawns, and of course Nakamura has sacrificed a defensive resource in one of his rooks).</p><p>But then Nakamura overplays his position by grabbing the pawn on the a4 square:</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>US Chess</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Caruana finds the perfect move: rook to a3. <p>It's a simple puzzle concept. Swipe different colored candies to match three of the same in a row. If you match four or five in a row you get a new candy that does more damage to the board. If you pair two of the new candies together, even more damage is done to the board.</p>

Some, like "Krush Groove," "8 Mile," and "Straight Outta Compton," have gotten it right. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Most, unfortunately, just have not been that good. This is where the new Netflix original series "The Get Down" nails it.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"The Get Down" is a mixture of imaginative storytelling and historically pronounced themes. Set in the nostalgia of the Bronx, the show takes place during a time when disco was the commercial sound and hip-hop was being born.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The story is based as much around the scenery as it is the main characters. <span>The two main characters, Ezekiel "</span>Books<span>" Figuero and Mylene Cruz,</span> adequately display the youthful spirit of a young couple learning about the world around them, the players involved, and the music that drives their passions.</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Myles Aronowitz/Netflix</span></p><p class="caption">"The Get Down" stars, from left, Jaden Smith, Skylan Brooks, Tremaine Brown Jr., Justice Smith, and Shameik Moore.</p></div><p></p></div></div>There are heavy nods and nuances inside "The Get Down" that could best be described as "hip-hop Easter eggs." The Easter eggs are all over the place. Clearly Mylene is inspired by famed disco singer Donna Summer. Les Inferno is like the Studio 54 of the Bronx, just like the very real Disco Fever. The name of the series is literally the birth of sampling.</p><p>The Easter eggs are probably in the dozens when all is said and done. The only one missing is Crazy Legs from the Rock Steady Crew.</p><p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">It's a story many of us know, much like a myth, that hip-hop was invented to curb the violence in the streets</span>. Never has any major series or movie attempted to actually show, not only how this was being done, but by Kool Herc himself - brilliant. Likewise, the scene in which Shaolin Fantastic stands on the roof of a likely condemned building, looking out at the Bronx from an aerial view and defining the territories by DJ, brings back a special feeling.</p><p>Most of the movies, series, and shows that involve hip-hop come from a perspective outside of the culture, or they're made by someone with an extremely narrow scope on what part of the culture is being displayed. That's wack.</p><p>"The Get Down" is a fun ride with its fair share of topical interactions that make it just complex enough to be interesting and entertaining and not so complex that you can't share it with your close friends. It's smart but not convoluted, funny but not corny, youthful but there's an old soul in there.</p><p>It also helps enjoyment of the show that hip-hop is the backdrop of the series, and not the series itself. That's what makes "The Get Down" an instant classic.</p><p>Jimmy Smits, Jaden Smith, and Giancarlo Esposito are clearly the most recognizable faces on the screen, but they are side characters, part of the swirld around the core of the main characters' storyline.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Netflix</span></p><p class="caption">Jaden Smith stars on Netflix's "The Get Down."</p></div><p></p></div></div>At points, I thought Books somewhat represented the eloquent aggression of hip-hop while Mylene represented the feminine wiles of disco.</p><p>So much of the series' authenticity is thanks to the scholars and historians that the show's producers utilized.</p><p>For example, the real-life Grandmaster Flash, a pioneer of hip-hop DJing, was employed to train the young actor who played him on the show. I wonder if someone from the Koch family assisted in making sure Mayor Koch was played correctly, because Frank Wood did an excellent job.</p><p>Netflix was right to greenlight this project with this crew, however expensive. "The Get Down" artistically rides the line between original storytelling and raw, lifelike historical narrative, and that's refreshing to see. Like it or not, hip-hop is a culturally dominating global force. Yet still it's Made in America, right there in the Bronx. As chess prodigy Elizabeth "Beth" Harmon, Anya Taylor-joy has become autumn's biggest star and in the process lit up the chess world to such a degree that the 24-year-old talent could do for the game what Bobby Fischer achieved in 1972 when he defeated Boris Spassky in Iceland to capture the World Chess Championship, becoming the only American ever to do so.</p><p>"The Queen's Gambit" is superb TV — really, a long movie, with gorgeous cinematography, remarkable acting from a sizeable cast, a fine score from Carlos Rafael Rivera, and impeccable direction from Scott Frank, whose previous Netflix series, 2017's "Godless," was also a great piece of work, a revitalizing western starring Jeff Daniels as a figure of Cormac McCarthy-grade malevolence.</p><h2>A Cold War sports story, not unlike the one we've seen before</h2><div type="image" title="Bobby Fischer" height="758" width="1024" msid="79026503" hostid="261"></div><p>The menace in "The Queen's Gambit" is more diffuse: it's an amalgam of Cold War-era paranoia and male privilege, the rigors of top-level chess, and Beth Harmon's own manifold inner demons.</p><p>Orphaned by her mother's violent suicide (we're led to assume that Beth was supposed to die, too), Harmon is taken in by a Kentucky institute for girls where tranquilizers are on the daily menu and chess is played, surreptitiously, by a kindly, taciturn janitor in the facility's Stygian basement.</p><p>From here, the plot should be predictable: Beth becomes an obscure, tormented genius, her gifts imprisoned until a sequence of events sets her on a dramatic path to twisting destiny.</p><p>Rey Skywalker, Harry Potter, King Arthur — we've all been here before. Beth has her Merlin in the subterranean shadows, and later a run of heroic challenges, the most daunting being her simultaneous dependence on Librium and red wine, chugged straight from the bottle.</p><p>The marvelous, engaged acting elevates "The Queen's Gambit" far above its many, many clichés. And awaiting it, supporting it, enhancing it at every step is the relatively meticulous attention to chess detail and the overarching premise that the game is not a game. Still, an intensely competitive sport played not just by solo savants but, ultimately, by teams.</p><h2>The neglected legacy of women in chess</h2><div type="image" title="Nona Gaprindashvili" height="1499" width="1999" msid="79026510" hostid="261"></div><p>Team Beth winds up being quite scrappy, as even high-grade US chess was in the 1960s. Her most daunting foes are, of course, the Soviets, whose Cold War chess was anything but rough around the edges. Few actual historical players are presented in the story, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H185G5T/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_hsch_vapi_tkin_p1_i0">adapted from a 1983 novel by Walter Tevis</a>. The reigning world champion is Vasily Borgov, a mashup of Spassky and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tigran_Petrosian">Tigran Petrosian</a>, with a sly touch of current world champ Magnus Carlsen thrown in (Borgov, like Carlsen, is described as a master of the endgame).</p><p>But Beth confronts plenty of rivals, all-male, along the way. Two become boyfriends, and then coaches. That might sound offensive, but it adds some helpful romantic sizzle to the depiction of a world that was certainly sexy — in a Gibsons-and-Chesterfields, Rat-Pack-in-Vegas, James-Bondish sort of way back when JFK and LBJ were in the White House — but that was also, well, full of socially awkward young men playing chess.</p><p>(A significant element, almost entirely omitted in the series, is that there was a women's pro chess tour in the 1950s and 1960s, too, with its own world champions, including five-time winner <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nona_Gaprindashvili">Nona Gaprindashvili</a>, the only real-life player depicted in the series, and then only in a pan of an audience, with the voiceover acknowledgment that she had never faced the Soviet men.)</p><p>In any case, the real sizzle is in the chess, which has never been depicted better on screen.</p><p>"Searching for Bobby Fischer" had been the gold standard, but it avoided the deep intricacies of adult, professional chess. In "The Queen's Gambit," Beth completely skips kid chess and leapfrogs, in her first notable title, to top board against an overconfident Kentucky state champion (a plaintive Harry Melling). From there, it's grownups all the way, with Beth making bank, buying beautiful clothes, and fighting the pills and the booze as much as her opponents.</p><h2>Taking big-time chess seriously</h2><div type="image" title="Caruana US Champs 16" height="640" width="960" msid="79026520" hostid="261"></div><p>"The Queen's Gambit" could have covered all of this with some offhand references to the Sicilian Defense and a bunch of closeups of the pieces being pushed around the board, accompanied by furrowed scowls or smug grins from the actors. But the filmmakers instead asked former world champion Garry Kasparov and "Searching for Bobby Fischer" consultant Bruce Pandolfini for advice, to infuse the series with chess, chess, and more chess.</p><p>Not one but two variations of the Sicilian Defense make an appearance: the Najdorf and the Rossolimo, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fabiano-caruana-missed-chance-world-chess-championship-2018-11">the latter a favorite of the most recent challenger for the World Championship title</a>, American Fabiano Caruana (After an all-night bender with a Parisian temptress, Beth loses a Rossolimo Sicilian to Borgov in her first showdown with the steely Russian, played with heft and precision by Marcin Dorociński).</p><p>There's a savage joke about the Caro-Kann, an opening wielded by Carlsen in Game 2 of the 2013 World Chess Championship: Benny Watts — one of Beth's paramours, the cocky US champion with a taste for black leather dusters, jauntily played by Thomas Brodie-Sangster — says it's "all pawns and no hope."</p><p>Beth recounts a victory to her adoptive mother and quips about playing the "Marshall," shorthand for a variety of openings named from Frank Marshall, the US champion for most of the first third of the 20th century and the namesake of the famous Marshall Chess Club in Manhattan.</p><p>The Queen's Gambit of the series title also makes a crucial appearance, in a now much-discussed reference to <a href="https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1044366">Game 6 of the 1972 World Chess Championship</a>, when Fischer played white and opened with moves that transposed to a Queen's Gambit Declined position and defeated Spassky in a masterpiece that put the volatile American ahead and prompted Spassky to lead a standing ovation for his opponent.</p><h2>Real chess matches mingled with the storytelling</h2><div type="image" title="emma anya taylor-joy mia goth" height="780" width="1040" msid="79026529" hostid="261"></div><p>Fischer never played this opening, preferring a King's Pawn game: 1. e4, for the chess-heads. Likewise, Beth is a dedicated 1. e4 player, befitting her reputation as a flamboyant, attacking competitor who disdains draws and relishes the moment when you "break his ego" — what <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPlXC3M8hbg">Fischer in 1971 told talk-show host Dick Cavett is the greatest pleasure in competitive chess</a>.</p><p>Harmon shatters all the male egos she faces, across the chessboard and other contexts, and she breaks several hearts. But she also garners respect, a development in her character that extends beyond Netflix.</p><p>A top chess YouTuber, Antonio Radić, has already tracked down her important games from the series, as the consultants based them on real duels. And he's analyzed them as Harmon games, elevating Taylor-Joy's unexpected contributions to chess history (<a href="https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1060353">Vassily Ivanchuk vs. Patrick Wolff, Biel 1993</a> — the basis for the series' final game — might henceforth be better known as <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIMaTKOZG-8">Harmon vs. Borgov, Moscow 1968</a>).</p><p>Actual chess players, or at least their names, figure in the story. The great American player Paul Morphy comes up, as do legends such as José Capablanca alongside personalities and events only true chess aficionados would know: <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reuben_Fine">Reuben Fine</a>, the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hastings_International_Chess_Congress">Hastings International Chess Congress</a>, the importance of 1600 <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system#:~:text=The%20Elo%20rating%20system%20is,a%20Hungarian%2DAmerican%20physics%20professor.">Elo ranking</a>.</p><p>Conspicuously absent, of course, is Fischer. But that's because Harmon is Fischer, in the alternate universe of the series.</p><p>Actually, with her reputation for playing "intuitive" chess, rather than pondering reams of theory, she more like a Fischer antecedent — and a player who Fischer adored: the Latvian world champion, Mikhail Tal, considered by many to be the greatest attacking player of all time (Tal drank a lot and smoked a lot while he devised devastating combinations, piece sacrifices, and otherworldly checkmating maneuvers, but unlike Harmon, who overcomes addiction, he embraced his demons and died at 55.)</p><h2>No need to search for Bobby Fischer</h2><div type="image" title="Mikhail Tal" height="838" width="1024" msid="79026531" hostid="261"></div><p>We don't end up searching for Bobby, however. Beth is outlandishly captivating, and Taylor-Joy brings an often wordless, physical, yet transcendent style to the role that's equal measures intimidating and alluring, animated by a ferocious intelligence. As a competitor, Harmon is obsessed. So the second half of the series focuses on how her individual intensity is transformed into a team effort.</p><p>This is where "The Queen's Gambit" nails big-time chess. There might be just two players at the board, but there are squads behind each side, and for the Soviets in the 1960s, that was a national advantage. All the finest players in the world worked together to elevate the finest among them, and in the series, Borgov doesn't spend time alone: he huddles with his seconds, plotting, and planning.</p><p>Harmon is a one-woman army, at least chess-wise, until the final episodes (she receives considerable support, emotional and financial, from the best performer in the show, Moses Ingram as Beth's best friend from the orphanage, Jolene; Ingram steals every scene she's in).</p><p>First, Benny transports her to his grim basement apartment in New York to partake of <em>la vie bohème</em> and undergo a serious training regimen only briefly interrupted by the hot sex we all knew was on the agenda.</p><p>Then, with Harmon staring down a second defeat by Borgov, this time in Moscow while all Russia watches, Benny and Beth's original romantic fixation, a chess journalist named Townes, organize a transatlantic team of informal seconds who use a long-distance call during an adjournment to devise a winning line. (When Borgov doesn't cooperate, Beth has to summon all she's got to find victory without the Librium and the <em>vin rouge</em>.)</p><p>Adjournments are gone, but this is how the world's chess elite manage their encounters. Carlsen and Caruana didn't saunter into London in 2018 and battle for the World Championship as independent operators. Both had grandmasters in their camps and months of preparation behind them, and the best computer chess analysis engines money could buy helping them break down each others' strengths and weaknesses.</p><p>"Do you know why they're the best players in the world?" Benny asks Beth of the Soviets at one point in their training sessions.</p><p>"Because they have the best suits?" Beth counters, still dismissive of the notion that she needs anyone else to beat Borgov.</p><p>"It's because they play together as a team," Benny says, with a severity that verges on mansplaining. But Beth knows he's right.</p><h2>Beth Harmon is a contender</h2><div type="image" title="Irina Krush" height="1941" width="2588" msid="79026534" hostid="261"></div><p>Without these extras, "The Queen's Gambit" still would have been exhilarating. Still, it might not have snared the admiration of the serious chess community, which is used to the game being reduced to a caricature of the intellectually complicated and physically demanding throwdown it often is, with grueling contests that extend past 100 moves and leave both players slumped in their chairs.</p><p>Chess folks are also well aware of how much the game has evolved in gender roles since the 1960s. Hungary's Judit Polgár made a habit during her serious playing career of taking out top-ranked men, included Kasparov, and <a href="https://www.uschesschamps.com/press-release-news/2020-us-chess-championships-winners-crowned-all-five-national-tournaments">Irina Krush just won her eighth US Women's Championship</a>. Two-time US women's champ <a href="https://jennifershahade.com/">Jennifer Shahade</a>, with Yasser Seirawan and Maurice Ashley, is a member of the best chess commentary team this side of "Monday Night Football" in its heyday.</p><p>Ultimately, the beautiful achievement of "The Queen's Gambit" is that it evokes the 1960s and 1970s period when chess had been elevated to the same plane as more recognizable sports, with <a href="https://sicovers.com/featured/bobby-fischer-chess-sports-illustrated-cover-sports-illustrated.html">Fischer making the cover of Sports Illustrated</a> in 1972. Beth lands in Life magazine, but her character is both better than Fischer — and worse.</p><p>Like Fischer, famous for his collection of bespoke suits, Beth adores good clothes and outdresses the competition. But unlike Fischer, Beth needs the pills and the wine to arrive at what she calls a "cloudy" state to play at her best (she eventually adds cigarettes to the cocktail).</p><p>What prevents "The Queen's Gambit" from becoming "The Karate Kid" with knights and rooks instead of "wax on, wax off" and crane kicks is the exceptional woodpusher detail combined with Harmon's rise, through a system stacked against her, to become if not world champion, then a <em>threat</em> to the world champion, a reason for Borgov to both applaud and lose sleep at night.</p><p>She's a contender, and like any great athlete in sports, she leaves the fans wanting more. And they might get it if Netflix pursues a second season. Fifty years ago, Fisher set off a chess boom that, in his words, welcomed everyone: men and women, young and old. How interesting it would be if Beth Harmon encourages a new boom, and more women than ever set their sights on the big time.</p>
