Small businesses with limited resources end up stretching their existing employees beyond what would be fair. Most people end up working six days a week, and sometimes even more⁠— either to meet their own requirements or that of the business. Salaried, corporate employees, with fixed weekly holidays, form a very small portion of India’s total workforce. But both sections of the society face similar challenges when it comes to their work ⁠— most of their day is consumed by their work and earning their livelihood. Yet, as India moves towards more organised employment, some of the basic characteristics of having a job in India must change before the country at large, can debate the possibility of a four-day week. By the time a person reaches office⁠ — after having battled the choking crowd of a train, or the endless traffic jam on the road, through the sweltering heat or the water-logged streets, delayed by the bus, denied by the cabbies⁠— the energy and enthusiasm for a long day’s work is significantly worn down. Reducing the commute time and making it easier will need better infrastructure, better roads and less traffic, and better public transportation. That is another reason why a four-day work may make sense.“If this itself is brought down by a day, the levels of motivation will increase. Employees may even be willing to put in additional hours in 4 days rather than travel the additional day,” Neeti Sharma, Senior Vice President, TeamLease Services told Business Insider India. The other solution to this is to allow people to work remotely whenever possible. In recent years, flexible work timings, remote work options have been the top priorities of the Indian workforce, while considering a job opportunity. While there is no defined data points in India yet, there are few companies that already have moved to a four day week model and are able to achieve their goals effectively,” Sharma added. This is not a concern just for the employers, even employees feel the pressure of being inadequate at times. Bosses beware, 3 in 4 millennials are after your job and think they do it better

Their Senior Vice President, Amit Agarwal, <a href="https://www.mensxp.com/technology/news/46872-amazon-india-s-chief-wants-his-employees-to-stop-replying-to-work-emails-after-6-pm.html">stated</a> that he wanted his employees to stop responding to work emails between the hours of 6pm to 8am. As per the survey <a href="https://www.arcadis.com//en/global/our-perspectives/sustainable-cities-index-2016/cookie-wall/">conducted</a> by Arcadis, five of the biggest cities in India - Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and New Delhi - are some of the worst in terms of work life balance. And EY’s <a href="https://www.ey.com/us/en/about-us/our-people-and-culture/ey-study-highlights-work-life-is-harder-worldwide#.W2leHNgzbq1">report</a> backs that up with 30% of Indian respondents stating maintaining the balance between work, family and personal responsibilities has gotten harder over the past 5 years. While Indian employees may be the hardest working, research suggests that they are also over-worked. A shorter workweek could mean less time for opportunities that may advance an employee's career in the long-run, like networking with important industry peers.That's according to Laura Vanderkam, a time-management expert who has written several books on the topics of productivity and work life-balance, including <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Off-Clock-Feel-While-Getting/dp/0735219818">"Off the Clock: Feel Less Busy While Getting More Done."</a>"People do the immediate stuff of their job that has to get done, but then you wind up shortchanging kind of the longer career-development stuff," Vanderkam told Business Insider.For example, a person working only four days per week may decide not to have lunch with a colleague or client that could have led to an important project in the future because he or she didn't have expendable time to do so."I think there's definitely arguments to put a cap on hours that have been inefficient before," Vanderkam said. "I think there's also a point where you cannot be more efficient without really losing some of the higher-value things that are important but not urgent."That's not to say restructuring the workweek isn't beneficial in some ways. There's also a clear demand for work hours that are more manageable.In a study of 7,500 employees last year, for example, a report from <a href="https://www.gallup.com/workplace/237059/employee-burnout-part-main-causes.aspx">Gallup</a> found that 23% of workers felt burned out always or very often, while 44% said they felt burned out sometimes at work. That could be making it difficult for employers to retain talent. If an employee is struggling to work around important commitments unrelated to their profession, like doctor's appointments or caring for a child or family member, he or she could request to work longer hours on Monday through Thursday and work a shorter day on Friday. "It's going to be a question of optimization," Vanderkam said of the ideal number of hours employees should work during the week. "And we don't really know what the right number is. My guess is it's not 80, my guess is it's also not 20."

The list was based on an assessment of employee perceptions gauged using the engagement survey and an audit of company practices. Some of the other companies on the list include, Aegis, Global Analytics India, Happiest Minds Technologies, Hitachi Data Systems India, Kronos Incorporated, NetApp India, Pitney Bowes Software India and Shriram Value Services. Multi National Companies (MNCs) dominated the list. Around 47 per cent of MNCs featured among the Best in IT &amp; ITeS companies compared to just 20 per cent of non-¬MNCs making to the list. 
 
Other key companies to be featured in the list include SAP India, Intel India and PayPal. Employees from MNCs express far more positive perceptions about the workplace, compared to those from non¬MNCs. Unique benefits, work¬life balance, and fair share of profits were the top three areas where MNCs fared better over Indian companies, the report said. 
 Meanwhile, the startups (less than 5 years of operation) offered a far superior experience in all areas covered in the survey compared to more established organisations, with the top three areas being celebrations at work, tolerance to mistakes, and accessibility of managers. Even though more than 80 per cent of the companies had more than 5 years of operations under their belt, these findings are compelling considering the significant number of jobs created by startups being around 80,000 in 2014-¬15, according to a <keyword id="6372077" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nasscom">NASSCOM</keyword> study. "In our survey this year, the IT &amp; ITeS sector accounted for nearly one¬third of the companies we studied across the Indian industries. The industry's clear focus on creating a great employee experience is therefore striking," Prasenjit Bhattacharya, CEO, Great Place To Work Institute India said. 
 Dubbed as India's Silicon Valley, <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword> was unsurprisingly the most popular location for IT companies assessed. The city also accounts for the headquarters of nearly one¬quarter (24 per cent) of the best workplaces this year, including Happiest Minds, Intuit, Cisco, Salesforce and EMC India in the study. Bengaluru, Noida, Chennai, Mumbai, and Gurgaon together account for 64 per cent of the total study population, and more than three¬fourths (76 per cent) of the best companies in IT &amp; ITeS. Top 50 companies were identified based on comprehensive country¬wide engagement survey of over 36,500 employees from 145 IT &amp; ITeS companies and employee engagement in the study is measured through the Trust Index and Culture Audit.
