Thanks to new technologies, animals are not only healthier and more productive, but the livelihood of many people in poorer parts of the world is also improving," believes Kristin Peck, President of <keyword id="1184921" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zoetis">Zoetis</keyword>. <br /><br /><ul><li>Zoetis has annual revenues of around USD 6 billion and employs more than 10,000 people worldwide. </li><li>The need for productivity and efficiency in animal husbandry has never been greater than now, says Peck.</li><li>Peck actively supports women. She is the author of the book "Perseverance" about motherhood. Together with her husband, she has gone through a long and traumatic journey, including five miscarriages, several infertility treatments and a story with a murderous nurse.</li></ul><strong>Out of love for animals</strong><br /><br />Zoetis is the world's largest manufacturer of vaccines and medicines for domestic and farm animals. Since January 2020, it has been headed by Kristin Peck. Previously, she led the company's global production and supply organisation, and from 2015 she was head of the company in the USA. Since 2018, Peck also managed the company's corporate strategy and development activities, including acquisitions.<br /><br />Kristin Peck grew up on her parents' farm in Connecticut, surrounded by dogs, cats, horses and birds who were treated like family members. Her mother bred Morgan horses and her father helped organise the rodeo. Her first job, still in high school, was with Zoetis, which she manages today.<br /><br />In an interview for the American “Successful Farming” magazine, she stresses that at some point in her life she realised how important it is for people to create new jobs.<br /><br />- As a Georgetown University student reading History and Spanish, I spent a semester teaching Spanish to children in Ecuador. I took care of them and taught them the language so that their parents could find work. I soon realised that learning Spanish would not improve the future of these children if there was not enough economic growth to employ their families in these areas. That led me to take the business path as a way of creating opportunities for people," says Peck.<br /><br />In an interview with the 'SF', the President of Zoetis points out that the need for productivity and efficiency in animal husbandry has never been greater than it is today, because the constraints resulting from the pandemic, the growing world population and the need to tackle environmental problems are still growing. The future lies in digital solutions. Sensors provide more information about the health of farm animals, and genetic testing is becoming increasingly important as producers can choose the healthiest and most resistant animal breeds.<br /><br />- We also see greater emphasis on reducing the carbon footprint. We are trying to help producers improve production while using less resources to keep healthier and more productive animals. This is all thanks to new technologies and much better production methods. Those used in recent decades show the power of science and technology. In the 1970s, American farmers had to raise 140 million heads of cattle in order to meet consumer demand for beef. Today it is 90 million. Between 1964 and 2014, the amount of greenhouse gases associated with the production of a glass of milk decreased by 50%. Thanks to genetics, data, technology and new innovations, we will be able to improve the sustainability of livestock production," says Peck.<br /><br />One example of the impact of science and technology on human life is the African Livestock Productivity and Health Advancement (ALPHA) programme run by Zoetis in sub-Saharan Africa. Under this initiative, Zoetis is increasing the availability of veterinary medicines, establishing permanent diagnostic networks and providing training and education to local farmers. In these areas, the population is extremely dependent on their livestock. It often turns out that a lack of vaccination, or an incompetent diagnosis of the disease leading to the infection of animals, means hunger for the entire families.<br /><br /><strong>Zoetis during COVID-19</strong><br /><br />Zoetis, like most companies in the world, faces the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. Kristin Peck had to face it less than three months after she took over the company. Zoetis is a big organisation. It has annual revenues of around USD 6 billion and employs over 10,000 people worldwide. <br /><br />As the analysts stress, the company has a very balanced revenue policy, as it is divided 50/50 in terms of products for pets and livestock. Unlike many pharmaceutical companies, Zoetis is not dependent on any particular product. The best-selling drug, Apoquel, generated less than 10% of all sales in 2019.<br /><br />Kristin Peck pointed out at the results conference that Zoetis expects worse figures this year, because some 3% of sales used to come from the Chinese market, and the global economic slowdown could affect the results. But Peck doubts that the coronavirus will stop the long-term trend of eating more protein. Even if it does, Zoetis will benefit from selling its products aimed at poultry.<br /><br /><strong>Kristine Peck and helping women</strong><br /><br />Kristine Peck received the “Feather In Her Cap 2019” award for her involvement in the development of her employees, launching a leadership programme at Zoetis that provides training, mentoring and participation in strategic projects. Kristin Peck is also personally a mentor for many women in Zoetis.<br /><br />Peck herself has written a book on motherhood and her experiences with it. Together with her husband, she has gone through a long and traumatic journey, including five miscarriages, a surrogate mother's miscarriage, several infertility treatments and a story with a murderous nurse. Kristin Peck has two children today. In her book she encourages women never to give up their dreams of building a family.<br /><br />- Many women go through the same things, but do not talk about it. Therefore, the aim of this book is to help women who have fertility problems so that they do not feel lonely, and to build a certain dialogue about this," says Peck.<br /><br />The book was based on Kristin's notes, which her husband encouraged her to record. Peck wrote down all of her thoughts and poured difficult emotions on paper. The e-book was published by Kindle Publishing. President Zoetis points out in her memoirs that she wanted sympathy from those around her, but often received good advice in return, which was neither helpful nor comforting.<br /><br />"'People often said to me: You need to relax, some things could work properly, if it were not for your stress. I just wanted to hear: I'm sorry, I love you. I am here for you. <p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55b94f1bdd0895307e8b45f7-2551-1913/shutterstock_253828555.jpg" alt="woman backpacking travel alone mountains hiking" data-mce-source="Shutterstock" /><p class="source"><span>Shutterstock</span></p><p class="caption">More women are dreaming of traveling solo.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p class="p1">When you hear about how women use Pinterest, <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/planning-a-wedding-on-pinterest-people-2015-7">wedding planning</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/best-way-to-use-pinterest-2015-5">style inspiration</a> likely come to mind.</p><p class="p1">But there's also a huge new trend percolating on the platform that focuses mainly on fantasies of independence and living freely: female solo travel.</p><p class="p1">Travel inspiration has always been big on the platform, but the focus on traveling alone is recent. </p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">"Since Spring 2015, we've seen a marked increase in women Pinning solo travel ideas," Christine Shirmer, consumer communications at Pinterest, told Tech Insider. </span><span class="s1">"Pinners of all ages tell us this is less about self discovery and more about simply not wanting to compromise on where and when they want to travel."</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">It's unclear how many women have actually been inspired to take the plunge and travel alone thanks to Pinterest, but they're certainly dreaming about it. </span><span class="s1">There's been a rise in Pinning the topic of over 350% since 2014, according to Pinterest, with the biggest surge starting in April of this year. A spokesperson also said that it's much more popular with users in the 18-34 range than the 35-55 range.</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1"><span>Some of the most popular destinations are Spain, Chile, Italy, and Scotland, where the women in the Pinterest boards wander down colorful, winding streets, savor gelato, or gaze at the ruins of old castles.</span></span></p><p class="p1">Channeling the best-selling solo travel memoirists Cheryl Strayed and Elizabeth Gilbert, "wander women" post photos that show them with their arms spread wide, taking in the saturated scenery around them, and looking incredibly free. With their on-trend backpacks slung over their shoulders, they pose with locals, don't bother with makeup, and ride elephants. The photos make travel seem like a boundless, epic adventure.</p><p class="p1"><span><a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/166211042473633326/">Commenters</a> <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/87186942758439416/">gush</a>, <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/103512491409772750/">saying things like</a>, </span>"Wow! How inspiring!" and "Awesome!"</p><p class="p1"> </p><p class="p3"><span class="s1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55b94f1bdd0895307e8b45f8-1021-766/screen shot 2015-07-22 at 11.00.20 am.png" alt="pinterest traveling alone solo" data-mce-source="Pinterest" /><p class="source"><span>Pinterest</span></p><p class="caption">Pinterest has seen a staggering 350% increase in women Pinning solo travel ideas.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s1">When I reached out to blogger Kristin Addis of <a href="http://www.bemytravelmuse.com/">Be My Travel Muse</a>, she wasn't surprised at all by the increase in women dreaming about traveling by themselves.</span></p><p class="p5"><span class="s1">"Women are more empowered, educated, and independent as a whole than they ever have been before and the world is only becoming more and more connected," Addis, who has been traveling around the world by herself nonstop since 2012, told Tech Insider.</span></p><p class="p5"><span class="s1">She said the best part about traveling alone is having the freedom to explore and get immersed in another culture. So it's not hard to imagine why women would fantasize about this online just as much as they dream about other aspects of their future.</span></p><p class="p5"><span class="s1">And now, scores of female travel bloggers like Addis make a living writing about their trips and disseminating their advice through Pinterest - similar to the men who made careers out of writing about their travels for decades, even centuries. Addis is no different from the Jack Kerouacs and Bruce Chatwins who came before her. Traveling costs money. It also takes time. And sometimes, it can be dangerous.</span></span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s1"><span><span>It's impossible to discuss women traveling by themselves without talking about the dangers. Global news coverage frequently highlights these <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/16/world/americas/3-convicted-of-raping-us-student-on-rio-transit-van.html">sexual assaults</a>, <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/jaipur/20-year-old-Japanese-woman-tourist-raped-in-Jaipur/articleshow/46172697.cms">gang rapes,</a> and even <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/19/nyregion/suspect-says-fatal-encounter-with-sarai-sierra-began-with-rebuffed-kiss.html?_r=0">murders.</a></span></span></span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s1"><span><span>And <span>there can be an added layer of danger for women of color. </span><a href="http://photos.state.gov/libraries/greece/38517/uscitizens/sec_message_greece.pdf">In 2012</a><span>, the U.S. Embassy in Athens, </span><span>Greece,</span><span> released an advisory, </span><a href="https://www.osac.gov/pages/ContentReportDetails.aspx?cid=17126">still in effect</a><span>, that warned there was a rise in harassment and attacks against American tourists of color.</span></span></span></span></p><p class="p3"><a href="http://www.nadinecduncan.com/">Nadine Duncan</a>, who wrote the book "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Diary-Traveling-Black-Woman-International/dp/0692403566">Diary of a Traveling Black Woman: A Guide to International Travel</a>," told Tech Insider that she believes she gets more attention while traveling than a white female tourist would. For example, locals in certain areas will ask her to pose for photos with them for no apparent reason beyond her looks.</p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">"As a Black woman, par<keyword id="72550" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="TI">ti</keyword>cularly one with [dreadlocks], I definitely stand out," she told TI. </span><span class="s1">"It seems that most countries expect white tourists, so the 'fascination' may not be as strong [for white tourists]."</span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55b94f1bdd0895307e8b45fa-800-600/unnamed-3.jpg" alt="Nadine Duncan travel blogger" data-mce-source="Courtesy of Nadine Duncan" /><p class="source"><span>Courtesy of Nadine Duncan</span></p><p class="caption">Nadine Duncan, author of "Diary of a Traveling Black Woman: A Guide to International Travel."</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p class="p3">Pinterest does provide tips for travelers who want to stay safe.</p><p class="p3"><span>"Some of the concerns are different and important to discuss, such as dress code and women's legal rights, but otherwise I'd say the same to both sexes: look around, stay aware, don't get too intoxicated, and think twice about going out alone at night," blogger Addis said.</span></p><p class="p3">Travel boards are filled with meme-ified and aesthetically pleasing lists that explain how to be cautious while traveling. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="80487" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="walmart">Walmart</keyword> is bolstering its pet services plans with brand new <keyword id="35450" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="insurance">insurance</keyword> and pet-sitting offerings.</li><li>The retailer will now offer "pet parents" insurance plans to help foot the bill for veterinary visits and more.</li><li>"We're on a mission to help families live better — and that goes for <keyword id="6358374" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pets">pets</keyword>, too," Melody Richard, merchandising vice president of Walmart's pets category, said in a statement sent to Business Insider.</li></ul><p style="font-weight: 400;">Walmart is digging deeper into the pet services game, the company announced Thursday. The <keyword id="6354851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="retail">retail</keyword> giant is launching <a href="http://www.walmart.com/petcare">Walmart Pet Care</a>, an "omnichannel pet care offering that makes holistic care easy, simple, and affordable for the 90 million pet owners who shop at Walmart."</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">Pet-related services will include Walmart's first-ever pet insurance plans via insurance provider Petplan. The company will also collaborate with pet-services company Rover to pair owners with local pet-sitters and dog-walkers.</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">"We're on a mission to help families live better — and that goes for pets, too," Melody Richard, merchandising vice president of Walmart's pets category, said in a statement sent to Business Insider. "Especially as adoption rates soar as a result of the pandemic and more people become pet owners, this was the perfect time to launch expanded services in Walmart Pet Care for our customers."</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">The pet services industry has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pet-care-industry-growing-we-need-pets-more-than-ever-2020-10">exploded</a> in recent years, as consumers continue to spend more and more on their animals. </p><p>"Maybe 30 years ago, pets were in someone's backyard," Kristen Peck, CEO of animal medication company Zoetis, told the audience at the <a href="https://trendsfestival.com/">Business Insider Global Trends Festival</a> in October. "Then they came into the house. And I'd say five-to-10 years ago they ended up on your bed. Why does that matter? Last year, the company launched <a href="https://corporate.walmart.com/newsroom/2019/05/07/walmart-now-delivers-pet-meds-straight-to-your-doggie-door-and-more-paw-sitive-news">Pet Rx</a>, a service focusing on prescriptions for pets. </p><p style="font-weight: 400;">Insurance plans now offered in collaboration with Petplan will offer "pet parents" the chance to save on veterinary bills, streamline pet care appointments, and access up to $1,000 worth of free online virtual vet appointments. Additionally, Walmart customers using Rover will receive a $20 store gift card after completing their first and fifth Rover appointments.</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">"Through Rover, pet parents can quickly and easily book pet sitters and dog walkers from over 300,000<br />providers in their communities across the country," a Walmart spokesperson said.
