Senapathy ‘Kris’ <keyword id="9991" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gopalakrishnan">Gopalakrishnan</keyword> is a name that resonates with the growth of IT sector in India and the rise of <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword>. ‘Kris’ as he is known popularly was the second last founder-CEO of the home-grown IT giant that spearheaded entrepreneurship in the field of digital transformation through internet technology. While Kris quit the company’s board in 2014, he is far from retired from work. As an ex-president of CII and also the non-executive chairman of Axilor ventures, he promotes start-ups because starting his own business with six other friends in 1981 changed his life. First Entrepreneurial Stint that Worked When it comes to work, Gopalakrishnan counts his stars and says that he was lucky to find people who supported him, no matter what. “I started working at Patni computers in Pune where I met Narayana Murthy. He wanted to start his own venture and asked me to come on board; I couldn’t refuse because I looked up to him as a senior,” Kris recollects. With a dream team and a great manager like Murthy on board, Gopalakrishnan was not worried about him starting up at a young age of 27. He agrees that he was scared to tell his family and when he got married the same year as the incorporation of the company, he waited till the wedding to make the announcement. Luckily, everyone was unfazed and Kris started the first sailing course on the entrepreneurship, smooth.

The fund granted $36 million to set up a Centre for Brain Research at IISc. For 10 years, the Centre will get support from the IISc’s Centre for Neuroscience to also get a chance to collaborate with hospitals to study the functioning of the brain and find cures for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and schizophrenia. “I’m bullish about Brain Research as it is impertinent. Methods such as personalized medicine can have a significant impact in this field” says Gopalakrishnan. Kris Gopalakrishnan told Business Insider that he has been focusing on four sectors after leaving Infosys, “My areas of interests are Education, Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Research, not particularly in that order.  Three IIT Madras alumni — Jaishree Deshpande, her husband who is an Indian American venture capitalist Gururaj Deshpande and S. <keyword id="6530028" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kris-Gopalakrishnan">Kris Gopalakrishnan</keyword> — have together launched this centre as a future hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. They will be funding $500,000 per year over the next 5 years. The centre will perform the role of an angel investor. Every program the centre seeds will ultimately run on its own if it turns successful. 
 
Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras, said that the Gopalakrishnan-Deshpande Centre was being created at the right time to give a big fillip to the entrepreneurial ecosystem in IIT. 
 Kris Gopalakrishnan, Chairman of <keyword id="2602340" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Axilor-Ventures">Axilor Ventures</keyword>, said the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem at IIT Madras will be enhanced by the opportunity to learn from the global network of such centres. 
 
“Also, the research community will get the opportunity to collaborate with other researchers across the network, including market and funding access,” he said.

 This man has an interesting history.  Back in 2014 when he was ready to set out on his own journey, he identified one area which definitely needed his focus more because it would define our future and its <keyword id="1014249" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="brain-research">brain research</keyword> in the days to come. The same year, Pratiksha <keyword id="22629" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="trust">Trust</keyword> - the fund Kris set up with his wife - announced a grant of Rs 225 crore for a <keyword id="2038777" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Centre-for-Brain-Research">Centre for Brain Research</keyword>, so it could be set up inside the <keyword id="75850" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Science">Indian Institute of Science</keyword> campus in <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword> without any delay. 
 He also initiated a <keyword id="63068" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="partnership">partnership</keyword> with the Centre for <keyword id="3720863" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="brain-research-and-carnegie-melon-university">Brain Research and Carnegie Melon University</keyword>. 
Going strong in what he aims to achieve, Kris says he wants to “create a world-class institution in India for Brain Research” by first facilitating research and then commercializing it “to create products that have the potential to create real difference”. 
 
He signs off by saying - “There are two ways achieve what I have set out for; either you can collaborate with the best minds in the world in this field or you can make sure that the Indian capabilities get the best international exposure which they can implement back home.”

He believes that doing your homework is important, especially for fields like Artificial Intelligence, Stem Cell Research,Crypto currency, Data mining, Autonomous technology, Cognitive intelligence and more. Basically, fields which are hot topics for now and for the future.

EXCLUSIVE: Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan says Brain Research will be the next big thing

New Delhi, Dec 18 () Stating that most Indian companies are "afraid" of competition, Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishan on Wednesday said domestic firms should improve their corporate governance and compete at the international level.
 He also said the companies should learn from the Indian IT industry, which is "world-class because of world-class governance", and develop start-up mindset to experiment with new technologies.
 "We must go for global listings. We must attract global funding. IT industry, from where I come, is world-class because of world-class governance. There is a lesson to be learnt. It has zero debt when we are going through debt crisis in this country," Gopalakrishnan said at a CII event.
 He said the global and domestic economy will grow and to capitalise on the same companies need to invest in innovation.
 "If you are a big company, clearly you need to invest more on research and development. We need to create our own IPRs. We have to improve our governance. Our companies are not yet competitive at global scale. I am sorry to say. Very few companies are. That is why we are still afraid to compete," Gopalakrishnan said.
 He said the global economy has grown from USD 11 trillion in 1980 to USD 80 trillion at present and is expected to triple in the next 30 years, adding that computing technologies have added significantly to this growth.
 "Microsoft, Google and Amazon were not there before 1980. They were born in digital computing era. India went from USD 160 billion economy in 1980 to USD 2.8 trillion -- that is 18 times growth in the last 40 years," Gopalakrishnan said.
 The government has set a target to make India a USD 5 trillion economy by 2025.
 "We can debate will it happen in 2025 or 2030, but it will happen. I am confident that it will happen because India is a low-income country and we will become a middle-income country at the time we hit USD 5 trillion mark and we will hit USD 10,000 per per person per capita maybe by 2030. That time we will be actually USD 10 trillion economy, which is four times," he said.

Indian companies should list overseas, improve governance: Kris Gopalakrishnan

<keyword id="6354616" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> co-founder <keyword id="194394" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Biz-Stone">Biz Stone</keyword> invested in Lookup, a free local shopping app that connects shoppers with businesses. 
 
Lookup, which started its operations last year in October, is a mobile application that uses chat to disrupt local commerce in India. 
 
The app, available on both Android and iOS, eliminates the need to call a retailer and wait for a response. It assimilates all the requirements from buying groceries, home delivery, to product/price enquiry into one app. 
 
On Wednesday, Lookup raised Series A funding from Stone. He has joined the team as an investor and advisor. Lookup will be using the funds towards investment in expanding its merchant base for convenience of its users and to branch out in newer geographies. 
 
Started by Innoz’s Deepak Ravindran, Lookup had already registered over 2, 00,000 downloads and answered over three million queries within about five months of its launch. 
 
“I'm honoured to be a part of Deepak’s next big project and I am truly impressed by what he has already accomplished in his life. I’m very excited about working with such an inspiring entrepreneur, whom I share common ideologies with,” said Stone. 
 Lookup raised a total of $382,000 in its seed round, from multiple investors including Infosys’ <keyword id="6530028" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Kris-Gopalakrishnan">Kris Gopalakrishnan</keyword>, Teru Sato, DeNA and MKS Group (Switzerland). 
 
“I am extremely thrilled that Biz Stone is personally investing in our Series A round. It is almost surreal. His beliefs and ideals are very fascinating and I am glad that someone so altruistic and with such a genuine moral compass is a mentor and advisor to me and my company,” said Ravindran. 
 
He added that receiving this funding was like getting another opportunity to blazon the world with innovation. “We plan to integrate all the offline businesses into the online world and connect them to their customers. The final goal is to make Lookup a global phenomenon and hope to ease the busy lives of the people,” said Ravindran, when asked about future plans. 
 
Going forward, Lookup will introduce more categories, payment options, NLP/Artificial Intelligence, deep linking to other apps as well as add a virtual store on its platform for vendors to sell through Lookup besides fostering partnerships with businesses in newer verticals such as education.

<keyword id="6360722" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="ratan-tata">Ratan Tata</keyword>, Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, has invested an undisclosed amount in San Francisco-based medical emergency response start-up called <keyword id="2953688" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="MUrgency">MUrgency</keyword> Inc. 
 "He (Tata) clearly wanted us to launch and grow the network in India first before taking it overseas. Mr Tata's investment in MUrgency will help attract leading talent to the company and major partnerships beyond India," MUrgency Inc Fonder <keyword id="378311" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shaffi-Mather">Shaffi Mather</keyword> stated. 
 
The firm was founded in 2014 in Silicon Valley and was incubated out of Stanford ChangeLabs; it has also recently received investments from Kris Gopalakrishnan and Axilor Ventures, led by S D Shibulal. 
 
In India, the service was launched in Tricity area in Punjab in February this year, with a network of 36 hospital emergency rooms, over 40 ambulances and more than 350 medical professionals. 
 
Similar services are also said to be expected to be launched in Amritsar and Jalandhar towards the end of this month, and cover the entire state of Punjab by next month. 
 
Long term goals include covering all India by 2018 and the world by 2020. 
 
As per the company claims, emergency response can be made available with just one tap on a mobile phone in less than nine minutes in urban areas. 
 
"While our primary goal is to develop emergency medical response network, we are widening our service to be an inclusive and comprehensive medical service platform on your mobile phone. The app is live on iOS and Android app stores and several features are accessible across the world already," Sweta Mangal, Director, Global Emergency Response, MUrgency said.

Medical emergency response start-up MUrgency finds an investor in Ratan Tata

<ul><li><keyword id="328347" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Angel-Network">Indian Angel Network</keyword> has closed its fundraising for the <keyword id="6129174" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IAN-Fund">IAN Fund</keyword> after raising at ₹375 crore.</li><li>The fund over exceeded its target by ₹25 crore. </li><li>It currently has 34 companies in its portfolio, including the recently turned unicorn startup Druva.</li></ul>Seed and early stage investment platform Indian Angel Network closed its capital raising activity for the IAN Fund as it overshot its target by ₹25 crore. The fund raised ₹375 crore in all. “The fact that we have achieved and exceeded our capital target underlines our impressive growth trajectory and highlights the faith that investors have in our vision. Moving ahead, we aim to scale newer heights and play a bigger role in transforming and nurturing India’s entrepreneurial landscape,” said Padmaja Ruparel, founding Partner of the IAN Fund. Some of the fund’s participants include Institutional investors like SIDBI’s Fund of Funds for <keyword id="6362513" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups">Startups</keyword>, IIFL, Wadhwani Foundation, Yes Bank, Max Group, Gray Matters Capital, and Hyundai. Individual investors like Kris Gopalakrishnan, Sunil Munjal, Rajan Anandan, Kanwal Rekhi too invested in the fund. IAN fund was founded in 2017 and since then it has been an active angel investor. It has 34 companies in its portfolio, including Druva which recently turned a unicorn. The other startups it funded includes the QSR chain Wow Momo, wedding platform WedMeGood. The sector agnostic fund primarily invest in AI and machine learning, augmented and virtual reality, biotech, cleantech, fintech, agritech and healthtech.
