New Delhi, May 20 () Franklin Templeton Trustee Services has appointed Kotak Mahindra Bank to work together with Franklin Templeton Asset Management (India) to assist the trustees in monetising portfolios of the six schemes that are being wound up. Kotak Mahindra Bank, through its debt capital markets team, will work closely with the Franklin Templeton Trustees, to assist with all portfolio actions in these six schemes that are being wound up, Franklin Templeton Mutual Fund said in a statement. Trustees of Franklin Templeton MF said that Kotak Mahindra Bank, a highly reputed firm with strong corporate governance practices and deep financial market experience, will, wherever required, act as their agent and provide its independent advice and assistance to the trustees through the entire process. The appointment will provide the trustees with the added experience and ability to monetise assets at the earliest possible time. "Franklin Templeton is committed to ensuring an orderly and equitable exit for all investors at the earliest possible time, and we will partner with the board of trustees and Kotak Mahindra Bank to ensure an efficient wind-up of these schemes, while preserving maximum value for our investors," said Sanjay Sapre, president of Franklin Templeton India. Sujata Guhathakurta, president (debt capital markets) at Kotak Mahindra Bank, said the bank is looking forward to working closely with the trustees and the asset management company (AMC) to assist them in wind-up of these schemes. Last month, the fund house had closed six of its debt funds, citing redemption pressures and lack of liquidity in the bond markets. Franklin Templeton appoints Kotak Mahindra Bank to assist in monetising assets of 6 wind-up schemes

New Delhi, Apr 21 () Markets regulator Sebi on Tuesday disposed of insider trading charges against Kotak Mahindra Life Insurance Company in the matter of Manappuram Finance. It was alleged that Kotak Mahindra Life Insurance Company (earlier known as Kotak Mahindra Old Mutual Life Insurance) sold shares of Manappuram Finance Ltd (MFL) while in possession of unpublished price sensitive information (UPSI) about the company and thereby violated insider trading norms. Sebi, pursuant to investigation in the matter of selective disclosure of UPSI by MFL, observed that Kotak had sold its shares while allegedly in possession of UPSI during March 1-20, 2013 and allegedly violated PIT (Prohibition of Insider Trading) Regulations. Sebi noted that officials of MFL met Ambit Capital Pvt Ltd's research analysts on March 18, 2013 to seek market guidance about the quarterly results and future outlook. Ambit published a research report based on the meeting which was distributed to its clients (broking as well as research) on March 19, 2013 before the market opening hours. In the research report, Ambit had changed its rating of MFL's stock from "buy" to "under review." The transactions of Kotak was purely from the point of view of the individual holding life insurance policies issued by the company, and selling of the scrip of MFL during that time was necessary to avoid significant loss to the policy holders in the scheme, since the price of the scrip was rapidly falling after the research report was issued in the morning of March 19, 2013, it added. "It may be noted that the noticee (Kotak) is bound by its fiduciary responsibility with the policy holders to act in their best interest," Sebi said. "I do not find a reasonable and acceptable degree of probability towards proving beyond doubt or even, without existence of significant doubt that Noticee (Kotak) had traded in the scrip of MFL when in possession of UPSI and hence, the allegation of violation of...PIT Regulations...does not stand established," Sebi Adjudicating Officer Vijayant Kumar Verma said while disposing of the show cause notice without any penalty. Manappuram Fin: Sebi disposes of insider trading charges against Kotak Mahindra Life Insurance Co 

New Delhi, Jan 9 () ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company on Thursday said it invested Rs 334 crore in its credit risk fund in the December 2019 quarter, a move that may encourage investors to put in their money in the fund.
 The fund house has invested Rs 256 crore in December and Rs 78 crore in October.
 Credit risk funds invest mainly in corporate bonds that are below the highest rating assigned by credit rating agencies.
 "At ICICI Prudential, we convey a lot about our values and beliefs that are ingrained in the risk management practices and investment process that we use. Simply put, we walk the talk," ICICI Prudential AMC MD and CEO Nimesh Shah said in a statement.
 "Speaking on behalf of the stakeholders, I can confidently say that we do eat our own cooking and invest side by side with our investors," he added.
 Joydeep Sen, founder of wiseinvestor.in, said, "It pays to invest with managers who invest in their funds. Investors want to know whether fund manager eats their own cooking. So, if anybody does it, it is a good indicator of future success and alignment of objectives. This way, fund houses can clearly demonstrate their conviction to investors and distributors."
 Industry experts said it is encouraging for investors to see that fund managers believe enough in the fund to put their own money on the line.
 Earlier in March 2016, Sebi made it mandatory for asset management companies (AMCs) to disclose in their Scheme Information Documents the aggregate investments made by AMC board of directors, fund managers and other key personnel.
 Kotak Mahindra AMC in 2015 took a stance that made it mandatory for its employees to invest in their schemes. In March 2019, DSP AMC followed.
 Credit risk fund was in news in 2019 after a series of defaults and downgrades shook up the NBFC space. But, these incidents affected only those fund houses that had exposure to those select papers. SP HRS

India's 2019 election is only one of the market's many worries

UTI Asset Management Company (AMC) has received markets regulator Sebi's go ahead to raise a little over Rs 3,000 crore through its initial public offering (IPO). The IPO of the country's largest asset management company in terms of total assets under management (AUM) comprises sale of 3,89,87,081 equity shares by existing shareholders, according to the <keyword id="9447718" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="draft-red">draft red</keyword> herring prospectus (DRHP). State Bank of India (SBI), <keyword id="6365973" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="life-insurance-corporation">Life Insurance Corporation</keyword> (LIC) and Bank of Baroda are offering to sell 1,04,59,949 shares each, while Punjab National Bank (PNB) and T Rowe Price International are planning to offload 38,03,617 shares each. The public offer is expected to raise a little over Rs 3,000 crore, market sources said. UTI AMC, which had filed draft papers with Sebi in December 2019, obtained its observations on June 16, latest update with the markets watchdog showed. Sebi's observations are necessary for any company to launch <keyword id="122704" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="public-issues">public issues</keyword> including initial share-sale, follow-on public offer and rights issue. SBI, LIC, Punjab National Bank and Bank of Baroda hold 18.5 per cent stake each in UTI AMC. In December 2019, Sebi had asked SBI, LIC and PNB to dilute their stakes to below 10 per cent in UTI AMC by December next year. Under Sebi's mutual fund regulations, a shareholder or a sponsor owning at least 10 per cent stake in an AMC is not allowed to have 10 per cent or more stake in another mutual fund house operating in the country. The IPO from India's largest asset management company UTI AMC is ready to hit the street

New Delhi, Dec 19 () UTI AMC has filed its initial papers with markets regulator Sebi for initial public offering (IPO) to raise a little over Rs 3,000 crore.
 The country's largest asset management company in terms of total AUM, has filed offer document with the regulator for an initial public offer of up to 3,89,87,081 shares, through an offer for sale of up to 1,04,59,949 shares By State Bank Of India, up to 1,04,59,949 shares by Life Insurance Corporation Of India, up to 1,04,59,949 shares by Bank Of Baroda, up to 3,803,617 shares by Punjab National Bank and up to 3,803,617 shares by T Rowe Price International, according to the draft red herring prospectus (DRHP).
 The public offer is expected to raise a little over Rs 3,000 crore, market sources said.
 The US-based T Rowe Price holds 26 per cent stake in the asset management company.
 Kotak Mahindra Capital, Axis Capital, CitiBank, DSP Merrill Lynch, ICICI Securities, JM Financial and SBI Capital Markets are the book running lead managers to the offer.

UTI AMC files IPO papers to raise about Rs 3,000 cr

New Delhi, Apr 27 () Shares of asset management companies (AMCs) and other financial sector related firms zoomed as much as 13 per cent on Monday after the Reserve Bank of India announced a Rs 50,000 crore special liquidity facility for mutual funds. RBI's announcement follows Franklin Templeton Mutual Fund's move to close six debt schemes amid liquidity crunch. Nippon Life India Asset Management jumped 12.78 per cent and HDFC Asset Management Company gained 7.95 per cent on the BSE. Other financial stocks also witnessed demand, with ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company rising 11 per cent, Manappuram Finance 9.99 per cent, Aditya Birla Capital 7.75 per cent, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra Financial Services 6.47 per cent, HDFC Life Insurance Company 6.64 per cent. The BSE Finance index was trading 2.89 per cent higher during morning trade. Kotak Mahindra Bank gained 6.78 per cent, Axis Bank rose by 6 per cent, ICICI Bank 3.64 per cent, HDFC Bank 2.12 per cent and State Bank of India 2.11 per cent. The BSE Bank index was trading with 2.92 per cent gain. In a statement, the central bank said heightened volatility in capital markets in reaction to COVID-19 has imposed liquidity strains on mutual funds (MFs), which have intensified in the wake of redemption pressures related to closure of some debt MFs and potential contagious effects therefrom. The stress is, however, confined to the high-risk debt MF segment at this stage and the larger industry remains liquid, it said. "With a view to easing liquidity pressures on MFs, it has been decided to open a special liquidity facility for mutual funds of Rs 50,000 crore," it said. In the race to acquire the fund management business of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Goldman+Sachs+Group+">Goldman Sachs Group</a> Inc in India, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Reliance+Mutual+Fund+">Reliance Mutual Fund</a> and <keyword id="45123" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="HDFC">HDFC</keyword> Mutual Fund are trying hard. 
 
According to a person familiar with the development, both the suitors are in the final round of negotiations and hope to clinch the deal. “However, it depends on who is more aggressive," said one of them. The deal is likely to be announced shortly,” he said. 
 
The Goldman’s MF business has assets of about Rs 7,132 crore. 
 
Let’s take a look at the profile of both the suitors! 
 <keyword id="106417" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reliance-Mutual-Fund">Reliance Mutual Fund</keyword>, which had assets under management of Rs 1.53 lakh crore on September 30, is likely to bid aggressively as it looks to bridge the gap with number two <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ICICI+Mutual+Fund+">ICICI Mutual Fund</a> that manages about Rs 1.65 lakh crore. 
 
On the other hand, HDFC Mutual Fund is looking at consolidating its number one position with assets of Rs 1.71 lakh crore. 
 
"The deal is expected to be valued at about 3-4% of AUM (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ICICI+Mutual+Fund+">assets under management</a>). With an AUM of Rs 7,132 crore, the transaction value should be around Rs 250 crore," said another person who is aware about the development. 
 
Besides adding Rs 7,132 crore of AUM, a deal would also help the acquirer gain a foothold in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=exchange-traded+fund+%28ETF%29+business+">exchange-traded fund (ETF) business</a> that is growing in popularity with local investors, mirroring global trends. 
 
ETFs have been witnessing sustained growth in markets such as the US in the past decade. 
 But for India, the ETF market is relatively new. <keyword id="6361649" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Goldman-Sachs">Goldman Sachs</keyword> Mutual Fund, which has 13 schemes, is primarily focused on the ETF segment. It has seven equity-oriented ETFs, one liquid ETF, one gold ETF, one international ETF, two equity schemes and an open-ended debt scheme. About 95% of its assets are in ETFs. 
 
Goldman Sachs Mutual Fund was awarded a central government mandate last year to sell the Central Public Sector Enterprise ETF. The government sold a part of its stake in state-run companies through an ETF for the first time, raising Rs 4,000 crore by disposing of shares in 10 state-controlled companies. 
 
Goldman Sachs entered the Indian mutual fund industry in 2011 by acquiring Benchmark Mutual Fund for Rs 120 crore. 
 "The (likely) exit of Goldman Sachs from the asset management business conclusively proves that the foreign <keyword id="109711" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Fund-manager">fund manager</keyword>s are finding it difficult to make inroads into the Indian investors' mind space," said a fund manager with a leading foreign fund. 
 He said: "In the last few years, we have witnessed the exit of Fidelity, PineBridge, <keyword id="48670" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Morgan-Stanley">Morgan Stanley</keyword>, ING among others." 
 
Foreign firms are finding it difficult to compete against local companies such as HDFC, ICICI, Reliance, Birla and UTI, except for outfits such as Blackrock and Franklin Templeton. 
 
Dhirendra Kumar, founder and CEO of Value Research, is of the view that foreign fund managers find it difficult to navigate India's investment landscape. Value Research is an independent mutual fund research house. 
 
In 2014, PineBridge Mutual Fund sold its domestic mutual fund schemes to Kotak Mahindra AMC, Morgan Stanley sold its domestic MF business to HDFC AMC and ING MF was acquired by Birla Sun Life AMC. In 2012, L&amp;T Finance acquired Fidelity's mutual fund business in India.
