The <keyword id="6355455" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-railways" source="Orion">Indian Railways</keyword> (IR) has set a target of 100 per cent electrification of its network by December 2023, said <keyword id="6354872" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="economic-survey" source="Orion">economic survey</keyword> 2021-22. To achieve this target with creation of other infrastructure in the sector, the government has increased the CAPEX (Capital expenditures) by five fold in the last seven years. Union Finance Minister <keyword id="129243" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="Orion">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> on Monday tabled Economic Survey 2021-22 in the Lok Sabha. The survey claims that IR is targeting 100 per cent electrification of its network by December 2023, upgradation of Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Kolkata corridors to 160 kmph and also elimination of level crossings on the Golden Quadrilateral and Golden Diagonal routes. The CAPEX has been increased substantially for IR from an average annual of Rs 45,980 crore during 2009-14 to Rs 2,15,058 crore during 2021-22. "An average of 1,835 track km per year of new track length has been added through new-line and multi-tracking projects during 2014-2021 as compared to the average of 720 track km during 2009-14," survey said. It mentioned that safety of the passengers and safe upkeep of railways assets is the topmost priority of IR. "With a continuing focus on safety of passengers the number of consequential train accidents has come down from 59 in 2018-19 to 55 in 2019-20 (pre-Covid) and further to 22 in 2020-21," it said. In order to strengthen the agriculture sector, as on December 31, 2021, the railways has operated 1,841 Kisan Rail services, transporting approximately six lakh tonnes of perishables items including fruits and vegetables. During FY21, IR carried 1.23 billion tonnes of freight and 1.25 billion passengers. "Despite Covid-19 pandemic, revenue earning freight loading (excluding loading by Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd. (KRCL) was 1230.9 million tonnes in 2020-21 as compared to 1208.4 million tonnes during 2019-20. Passengers originating were 1,250 million in 2020-21 as compared to 8,086 million in 2019-20," it said. In order to provide better amenities, the IR has embarked on providing Wi-Fi internet services at all stations (excluding halt stations) and as on December 5, 2021, total 6,087 Railway Stations have been equipped with the facility. In addition, projects connecting difficult terrain such as Rishikesh- Karnaprayag line as also the rail network to connect all capitals of north east states are ongoing. Further, a number of infrastructure development initiatives are envisaged in the National Rail Plan (NRP) being prepared by the Indian Railways. The plan envisages the creation of a future ready railway system that is able to not only meet the passenger demand but also increase the modal share of railways in freight to 40-45 per cent from the present level of 26-27 per cent. As per the National Rail Plan, the freight ecosystem is expected to grow from the present level of 4,700 MT to 8,200 by 2030. "At present the railway capacity is barely able to carry 1,220 MT which is around 26-27 per cent of the modal share. The Plan provides a pipeline of projects, which on completion will increase railway capacity to capture 45 per cent of freight traffic," the plan said. To prevent further bleeding away of modal share, railway capacity enhancing projects have been categorized as 'Super Critical' and 'Critical'. A total of 58 projects have been identified as 'Super Critical' and are targeted for completion by December 2022. About 68 projects have been identified as 'Critical' and have been targeted for completion by March 2024. "These projects are focused at increasing capacity on routes that serve major mineral, industrial hubs along with ports and major consumption centres," it said. "The next 10 years will see a very high level of CAPEX in the railway sector as capacity growth has to be accelerated such that by 2030 it is ahead of demand. As more projects are taken on hand and several sources of capital funding are developed, the CAPEX will increase further in coming years and the railway system will actually emerge as an engine of national growth," it added. Over 18 killed in Mumbai rain-related incidents , say officials

India cancels all passenger trains till April 14 in the wake of Coronavirus pandemic

New Delhi, Apr 14 () The Indian Railways on Tuesday extended suspension of all its passenger services till May 3, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to extend the nationwide lockdown amid COVID-19 threat.Modi on Tuesday announced that the lockdown across the country will be extended till May 3 to fight the coronavirus pandemic, saying the measure has produced a significant outcome in containing the infection. "In continuation of the measures taken in the wake of COVID-19 lockdown, it has been decided that all passenger train services on Indian Railways, including premium trains, mail/express trains, passenger trains, suburban trains, Kolkata Metro Rail, Konkan Railway shall continue to remain cancelled till 2400 hours of May 3," a statement from the railways said.It also said that to ensure essential supplies in various parts of the country, movement of goods and parcel trains will remain operational.The railways also said that all counters for booking of rail journey tickets for reserved/unreserved travel at railway stations and outside railway station premises shall remain closed till May 3 midnight.The Railway Board has also issued instructions to the zones that full refunds for fares of cancelled trains should be initiated by them. "No advance reservations shall be made till further notice," it said. After Modi's announcement of a 21-day lockdown across the country on March 22, the railways on March 24 had announced that its suspension of all passenger services will continue till April 14 in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.The railways said that passengers could claim a full refund for all trains cancelled in this period till June 21.Around 12,000 trains will be affected. Chugging Out To Sea: Five Coast-hugging Train Rides Along Indian Shores

Mumbai metropolitan region reported two new cases of Coronavirus on Thursday (March 19), taking the total number of such cases in Mumbai to 8. However, the number of private vehicles on roads and highways hasn't shown a noticeable decline so far. All beaches in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are near-deserted. Prominent hill stations in the Western Ghats, resorts, wildlife sanctuaries, tourist destinations also run almost empty. All major places of worship like temples, churches, mosques-mausoleums and gurdwaras have shut their doors for devotees. A few religious organisations and sects are offering online prayers, namaz etc. to keep crowds and the virus away. The state already elapsed into the partial shutdown with all schools, colleges, malls, theatres, cinemas, gyms and swimming pools closed till March 31. A BEST spokesperson said their services were diverted on more than 30 routes, including two locations in Thane district, till 9 am. The weather station at Dahanu in Palghar recorded 364 mm rainfall in the 12-hour period ending at 5.30 am on Wednesday, IMD Mumbai centre's deputy director general K S Hosalikar said. Besides, the weather station at Bhayander in Thane recorded 169 mm rainfall while the one at Mira Road reported 159 mm during the same period, he said. As per IMD's website, Thane city, Dombivli and Kalyan areas, which are part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), received more than 120 mm rainfall during the same period. "The cloud activity indicates that there would be one more intense rainfall day on Wednesday, Hosalikar tweeted. "Heavy to very heavy with isolated extremely heavy rains possible in next 24 over entire Konkan region. In North Konkan the impact could be more including Thane, Mumbai and Palghar, he said. Parts of south Madhya Maharashtra and adjoining Marathwada region are also likely to get very heavy rainfall, along with intense spells, he said. "With formation of low pressure area on Tuesday in North Bay, as forecast by the IMD, it has resulted into strengthening of lower level southerly winds over Arabian sea. It has brought heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in and around Mumbai, Hosalikar said. Since Tuesday night, the western suburbs here received 82.43 mm rain, followed by eastern suburbs-69.11 mm and the island city-45.38 mm, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said. The Pune district also received 59 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours and it is likely to witness moderate to isolated heavy showers in next two days, an IMD official said. The catchment areas of four dams - Varasgaon, Khadakwasla, Panshet and Temghar which provide water to the city - received good rainfall. Pune Mayor Murlidhar Mohol said since good rainfall is predicted by the IMD, the city is not likely to face any water cuts till the Ganesh festival, which begins on August 22. Panaji, May 15 () Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawanthas suggested the Railways to cancel the halt at Madgaon forspecial trains being operated by it as the state records newcases of coronavirus after a gap of more than a month.He has also said people travelling to the state inspecial trains or flights will have to undergo home quarantinefor 14 days even if they are non-Goans.Sawant on Thursday said the state government hassuggested to the Railways that a special train from New Delhito Thiruvananthapuram, which will run on May 15 (and arrive inMadgaon on May 16) should not halt at the station in Goa.He said "720 people have booked tickets on the trainto get down at Madgaon. We have realised that hardly anyone ofthem is Goan."We are concerned about what will happen once they getdown. We will have to test them.
