Thiruvananthapuram, As incessant rains continued to lash several parts of Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued "yellow alert" warning isolated heavy rains in seven districts. Heavy rainfall was predicted in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam districts. Northern districts including Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod are likely to witness thunderstorms, moderate rains and heavy rains in the coming hours, IMD sources said. "Yellow alert" indicates heavy rainfall between 6 and 11 cm. Incessant rains caused waterlogging and uprooting of trees in high ranges of Kottayam and Idukki districts. Meanwhile, shutters of Peppara Dam here were raised by 10 cm in the wake of increased water level, district authorities said. The District Collector has asked local people to be vigil as the shutters would be raised by another 10 cm later in the day, an official statement said here. Heavy rains lashed hilly areas in Kottayam on Thursday causing landslides in two places and disrupting traffic on various roads, including the one leading to the popular hill station of Vagamon in Idukki. The sudden heavy rains also led to rise in water levels of various streams and rivers, including the Meenachil river, raising concerns of a flood situation in the downstream areas, the district administration had said.

A 30 year-old man, who came to <keyword id="28504" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kerala" source="Orion">Kerala</keyword> from UAE last month, has tested positive for <keyword id="7616951" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="monkeypox" source="Orion">monkeypox</keyword>, making him the fifth case of the virus from the southern state. Health Minister <keyword id="3296362" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="veena-george" source="Orion">Veena George</keyword> on Tuesday said the man had arrived at the Calicut Airport on July 27 and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Malappuram district. His health condition is stable, she said. Those who were in close contact with him, including his parents, are being closely monitored. It is the fifth case of Monkeypox reported in the state, she said. The first case of monkeypox, a rare but potentially serious viral illness, was reported from <keyword id="6357351" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kollam" source="Orion">Kollam</keyword> district on July 14 and the patient was discharged from the hospital last week. The second confirmed case of the infection was reported in Kannur district on July 18 and the third case was reported in neighbouring Malappuram on July 22. All of them, tested positive for the disease, had arrived in Kerala from abroad. The Kerala government, on Monday, had confirmed that the 22-year-old man, who died on July 30, tested positive for monkeypox making the fatality the first such one in the country. According to the <keyword id="6356311" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-health-organisation" source="Orion">World Health Organisation</keyword>, monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus transmitted to humans from animals), with symptoms similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients, although it is clinically less severe. With the eradication of smallpox in 1980 and subsequent cessation of smallpox vaccination, monkeypox has emerged as the most important orthopoxvirus for public health. Kerala reports its fifth case of monkeypox

Thiruvananthapuram, A '<keyword id="18885" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="red-alert">red alert</keyword>' has been issued in Kerala's southern districts of Thiruvananthapuram, <keyword id="6357351" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="kollam">Kollam</keyword>, <keyword id="6357575" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="pathanamthitta">Pathanamthitta</keyword> and Alappuzha, and 'orange alert' in <keyword id="6385572" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="kottayam">Kottayam</keyword>, <keyword id="101900" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Idukki">Idukki</keyword> and <keyword id="29510" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ernakulam">Ernakulam</keyword> districts till Thursday owing to predictions of inclement weather conditions. Kerala has also banned all fishing activities starting Monday midnight till further notice. Authorities have asked all those out fishing in the sea to get back to the nearest coastal zone. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority action follows development of a low pressure area over south Andaman Sea and adjoining areas of south-east Bay of Bengal that is likely to concentrate into a depression in the next 36 hours and reach south Tamil Nadu coast around Wednesday. Weather officials have predicted moderate to heavy rains starting Tuesday till Friday in the state. Strong winds are also expected to hit the state, especially the southern districts. Heavy rains likely in Kerala: IMD issues red alert in four districts including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and 'orange alert' in three

<keyword id="6362858" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala-Tourism">Kerala Tourism</keyword> is targeting a healthy 10-12 per cent growth in both arrivals as well as in earnings in the year to March 2020 as the state has returned to normalcy after the worst deluge in a century had ravaged the entire state last year, a senior official has said. Despite the killer floods, the state had recorded a 6 per cent increase in both footfalls and revenue in 2018. It can be noted that tourism was one of the worst affected business sectors of the state's economy that was impacted by the worst deluge in a century that ravaged the entire state in August-September of 2018. The tourism hot-spot <keyword id="30469" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kochi">Kochi</keyword> and the surrounding areas and the Alappuzha, known for its famed boat-houses and backwaters, bore the brunt of the floods bringing the industry to a complete standstill. Apart from remittances, tourism is the mainstay of the Kerala economy with 12 per cent of the state GDP is contributed by this. "After the worst floods last year, tourism has recovered fully from January 2019. We saw 8.07 per cent growth in arrivals in the first quarter at 41,90,468 against 38,77,712 during the same period last year. Looking at the current trends we expect 10-12 per cent growth in both arrivals as well as in earnings this fiscal year," Kerala Tourism information officer Suraj PK told PTI. Despite the floods, Kerala closed 2018 with total footfalls of 16.7 million, up 6 per cent over 2017 while the earnings were over Rs 36,520 crore, up from Rs 28,740 crore, he added. In 2017, the footfalls were 15.67 million, recording an increase of 5.93 per cent. Of the total footfalls, 1.09 million were foreign tourists. The share of revenue from foreign visitors touched Rs 8,764.46 crore. Domestic tourism sector also gained during the period with visitors exceeding 15.6 million, showing an increase of 6.35 per cent, according to the numbers shared by the department. Buoyed by a healthy surge in domestic tourist arrivals, Kerala Tourism is all set to kick-start a new aggressive marketing campaign with a string of partnership meets across 10 cities, showcasing a combination of the state's traditional art forms and its attractive products of touristy appeal. Suraj said tourism will also get a boost from the very first edition of the Kerala's Champions Boat League (CBL), which began from late August. The boat league is conceived in the IPL format. "Every weekend any tourist who comes to Kerala will be able to witness one 'Champions Boat Race' in any of the major backwaters. It will end with the President's Trophy Boat Race in <keyword id="6357351" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="kollam">Kollam</keyword> on November 23, holding 12 races during the intervening weekends. It will be a world-class experience for the guests," he added. To attract tourists, the state has also added an array of new destinations and experiences that will make Kerala a 365-day destination for leisure travel. "A special attraction would be the <keyword id="61688" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jatayu">Jatayu</keyword> Earth Centre, an hour drive north of the state capital Thiruvananthapuram, which houses a giant statue of Jatayu, he said. The statue is 200-feet long, 150 feet wide and 70 feet in height, making it the largest functional bird sculpture in the world, Suraj added. Another new attraction is the country's first biodiversity museum, which is tucked away on the outskirts of the capital city. This museum, once a boathouse, is now home to the state's first-ever science-on-sphere system. Another first is the <keyword id="489015" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Muziris">Muziris</keyword> Heritage Project, expected to be completed this year, is the largest heritage conservation project in the country. The remains of a once-thriving port frequented by the Arabs, the Romans and the Egyptians during the first century BC is preserved across 25 museums. Another offering in the historical space is the Spice Route Project that rekindles the 2,000-year-old ancient sea links and the shared cultural and culinary legacies with 30 countries. Kerala is keen to figure prominently in the meetings, incentives, conferences, and events (MICE) tourism destinations as well, Suraj said.

Kerala wants to bounce back after floods, eyes 10-12% growth in tourism

A total of 112 people have died so far because of a huge fire that erupted early morning yesterday, as a result of a massive fireworks display. The display was a part of the concluding day of the annual festival at a Kali temple in Paravur, Kerala. The fire has also incinerated and wounded nearly 400 others, who were in the radius of half kilometres from the temple. 
 Last evening, police detained five people and filed cases against contractors <keyword id="3318601" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Varkala-Krishnankutty">Varkala Krishnankutty</keyword> and <keyword id="3318602" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kazhakoottam-Surendran">Kazhakoottam Surendran</keyword>, who were entrusted with the fireworks by the temple authorities. While Surendran is himself critically injured in the fire, Krishnankutty is absconding. 
Prima facie, temple authorities violated the district administration's order against holding a fireworks show, while also violating the Supreme Court's directive against the use of fireworks beyond 10pm. 
 
As the incident saw the light of the day, rescue teams found bodies charred beyond recognition, with several body parts missing, some of which were littered on tree branches and under concrete slabs. 
 
"It wasn't the fire alone that scorched people but the way they were hit by broken concrete that flew like projectiles. People close to the fireworks display were flattened by heavy stones and concrete," Biju G, a witness, told TOI. 
 
The incident reportedly occurred when sparks from a rocket fell on an auto packed with explosives and on an adjacent storeroom that stored more explosives. 
 
To make things worse, it has come into notice that the permission for the show is refused every year, but the rule is violated nonetheless. Even the police remain away from intervening, because of the fear of hurting religious sentiments associated with this 50-year-old practice. 
"We will investigate how the orders were flouted and who was responsible for the decision to go ahead with the fireworks display," said CM Oommen Chandy. 
 
However, the rescue work needs to be given a special mention. PM Modi himself flew down to Kollam with a team of specialist doctors from AIIMS, asking to break the protocol. "It was a shocking and horrific accident. In the explosion, heads got severed from bodies. We will ensure all support. We stand with the people of Kerala and will extend all possible help," Modi said. IAF also made available its helicopters for swift rescue operations. 
 
As compensation, relatives of those who died will receive Rs 10 lakh, while those who are seriously injured will receive Rs 2 lakh each and those with minor injuries will receive Rs 50,000 each. The Union government has also announced Rs 2 lakh as compensation for the kin of each deceased person. 
 
From the international circuit, Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif and Russian President Vladimir Putin have conveyed their condolences to President Mukherjee and PM Modi.

Chugging Out To Sea: Five Coast-hugging Train Rides Along Indian Shores

<keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s first woman judge of the <keyword id="6354977" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="supreme-court" source="Orion">Supreme Court</keyword> <keyword id="77775" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fathima-Beevi" source="Orion">Fathima Beevi</keyword> breathed her last at a private hospital at Kollam on Thursday. She was 96-years-old and was in hospital for a while. Beevi, who was living at her home in Pathanamthitta after retirement, has a number of firsts to her name. Apart from being the first woman judge of the apex court she was the first Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission and the first Muslim female Governor (<keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword>). Incidentally Beevi enrolled herself as an advocate in 1950 and began her career in the lower judiciary in Kerala. Beevi was appointed as a Munsiff in the Kerala Sub-ordinate Judicial Services in May 1958. She was promoted as the Sub-ordinate Judge in 1968, as the Chief <keyword id="169412" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="judicial-magistrate" source="Orion">Judicial Magistrate</keyword> in 1972 and as District and Sessions Judge in 1974. Beevi was further appointed the Judicial Member of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal in January 1980 before being elevated to the <keyword id="6355392" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="high-court" source="Orion">High Court</keyword> as a Judge on August 4, 1983. Beevi became permanent Judge of the High Court on May 14, 1984. She retired as the Judge of the High Court on April 29, 1989 but was further elevated to the Supreme Court as a Judge on October 6, 1989 where she retired on April 29, 1992. Beevi later went on to become the Governor of Tamil Nadu on January 25, 1997 and she quit in 2001 following a decision of the Union Government recommending to the President to recall her.
