Have you ever considered that your regular commute to and fro work could potentially shave off some years from your life? And no, we’re not talking about road traffic accidents but the slow poison we’re inhaling unbeknownst to us: air pollutants. A new study published in <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5196(24)00114-1/fulltext">The Lancet Planetary Health</a> by an international team of researchers reveals a terrifying truth: over 7% of daily deaths in 10 major <keyword id="20026638" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-cities" source="keywords">Indian cities</keyword> are attributed to <keyword id="19900550" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-pollution" source="keywords">air pollution</keyword> caused by <keyword id="22110704" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PM2-5-pollutants" source="keywords">PM2.5 pollutants</keyword> exceeding the World Health Organization's (WHO) safe limits. These PM2.5 pollutants are microscopic particles, 2.5 micrometres or less in diameter, that come from <keyword id="2839914" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vehicle-emissions" source="Orion">vehicle emissions</keyword> and industrial activities. Imagine tiny daggers — that's what these PM2.5 particles are like, infiltrating deep into lungs and even the bloodstream, wreaking havoc on our health. The study found that PM2.5 levels breach WHO guidelines a staggering 99.8% of the time in these cities. The analysis covered major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, Shimla and Varanasi. A staggering 7.2% of deaths in these cities, translating to roughly 33,000 annually, were associated with short-term PM2.5 levels exceeding the WHO's recommended limit (15 micrograms per cubic metre) between 2008 and 2019. Delhi, unfortunately, takes the crown for the most polluted. A shocking 11.5% of its annual deaths are attributed to air pollution, translating to a devastating 12,000 lives lost each year. The link between PM2.5 and mortality is undeniable. Researchers found that a mere 10 microgram per cubic metre increase in these pollutants correlates with a 1.4% rise in daily deaths. This risk factor doubles when considering only levels below India's air quality standards, which are, worryingly, less strict than the WHO's recommendations. But here's a surprising twist: the association between PM2.5 and death is even stronger in cities with generally cleaner air, like Bengaluru and Chennai. This suggests that locally produced pollutants, from sources like construction dust or waste burning, might be significant contributors. There is a glimmer of hope, however. The study emphasises that implementing stricter air quality standards and utilising proven pollution control methods from other parts of the world can be game changers. Lowering and enforcing stricter air quality limits will save tens of thousands of lives per year, emphasises Joel Schwartz, a co-author from Harvard University. This study serves as a stark wake-up call. The air we breathe in many Indian cities is a gamble, with every breath potentially harmful. Taking decisive action to curb pollution is not just about a cleaner environment, it's about saving the lives of millions of Indians.

Air pollution kills thousands in Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata every year: Lancet study

The air quality in <keyword id="6354925" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="kolkata">Kolkata</keyword> turned 'very poor' on Wednesday night with the pollution levels in the city breaching the 300 mark for the first time in recent months, a WBPCB official said. Measures are being taken to bring down the pollution levels, he said. The <keyword id="2071721" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Air-Quality-Index">Air Quality Index</keyword> (AQI) in Kolkata was recorded at 343, which falls in the 'very poor' category, at the green zone Fort William automated air monitoring station at 11 pm, according to the West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) official. An AQI between 0-50 is considered 'good', 51-100 'satisfactory', 101-200 'moderate', 201-300 'poor', 301-400 'very poor' and 401-500 'severe'. An AQI above 500 falls in the 'severe plus' category. The Ballygunge air monitoring station recorded an AQI of 330 at 11 pm, the official said. The AQI at the Anand Bihar station was marginally better at 275, which falls under the 'poor' category, around the same time. A 'poor' AQI means breathing discomfort for most people on prolonged exposure. "We are taking several steps to contain air pollution in Kolkata like sprinkling water at construction sites, stopping movement of over 15-year-old commercial vehicles in the cities of Kolkata and Howrah and banning coal-based ovens in roadside food stalls," the official said. Kolkata's air is now as bad as Delhi as it dips to 'very poor' category

New Delhi, Dec 15 () Leading air purifier makers witnessed up to 60 per cent jump in sales in the peak season, mainly October and November, this year, helped by growing pollution levels and steep rise in air quality index (AQI) in Delhi-NCR and northern region.
 Air purifier makers like Philips, Blueair, Panasonic, Eureka, Forbes, Sharp, Xiomi and Blue Star reported high double-digit jump in sales.
 Besides Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR), the companies also saw higher demand from tier-II cities like Lucknow and Kanpur. 
 The norther region contributes more than half of the sales of air purifiers.
 While Delhi-NCR continued to top sales chart for air purifiers, this year also saw some of the companies reporting higher number of sales from markets like Kerala and North East.
 "This year, the air purifier market in India stood at Rs 450 crore and we have witnessed a strong surge in air purifier penetration, recording a 60 per cent growth over last year till date," Philips Personal Health, Indian Subcontinent Vice-President Gulbahar Taurani said.
 Sharp sold around 15,000 units in the month of October and November this year.
 "Sharp witnessed 27 per cent growth in sales in these two months," Sharp Business Systems India President Consumer Electronics Kishlay Ray said.
 "This year, we have witnessed sales of our air purifier in strange markets where we never thought pollution is an issue. For example, Kerala and North East (which accounted for nearly 3 per cent of our total sales), apart from well-known pollution hotspots like Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata and so on," he added.
 Similarly, Eureka Forbes also reported a 30 per cent growth, its Chief Transformation Officer Shashank Sinha said.
 "The air purifier market was dominated by one market predominantly that is Delhi-NCR, followed by certain non-metros which did fairly well during the peak season," Sinha added.
 While the market for room air purifiers is in a nascent stage, limited to some key metro cities a few years ago, it has now started expanding to smaller cities.
 FMCG major Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL), which operates in air purifier category with its brands Blueair and Pureit, also saw a double- digit growth.
 "We have seen a healthy double-digit growth during the peak season this year. More than 70 per cent of our sales still come from the north region," a HUL spokesperson said.
 "While the category is nascent in smaller towns, we have seen signs of demand picking up in tier II towns in north India," he added.
 With the rise in air pollution, the companies believe that air purifiers are gradually becoming a lifestyle product and are likely to see sales throughout the year by shedding the tag of being a seasonal product.
 According to Xiaomi India Head - Categories and Online Sales Raghu Reddy, "The response to air purifiers has been overwhelming and positive throughout the year owing to the fact that today it has become a necessity for Indian consumers."
 "We have noticed a trend of awareness and acceptance of the poor air quality and environmental issues than before. Today, people are pro-actively taking precautions and improving the quality of indoor air that they are breathing."
 Panasonic India General Manager, Air Purifier Business Syed Moonis Ali Alvi said, "With the rise in pollution levels, backed by the increasing awareness and growing preferences for health and wellness products, air purifiers have become a part of our lifestyle today."
 According to market experts, the segment is growing at around 15 to 20 per cent annually and more than 15 companies are operating in the space.
 However, Blue Star, which witnessed 25 per cent growth in the segment, cautioned about the quality of products being sold in the market and demanded that its standards should be defined and regulated.
 "Air purifiers are sold from Rs 800 to Rs 57,000 in the market. Someone has even put charcoal and is selling it as room air purifier," Blue Star Managing Director B Thiagarajan said.
 "This should be treated as health care product and should be regulated. There should be some certification," he added.
 According to him, some of the makers are simply importing products without understanding the market.
 "In this chaos which is going on, suddenly one week or 10 days after stubble burning, people are buying it," he said, adding that it is very important to assure the people that the air is being purified.

Air purifier sales see up to 60 pc spike on rising air pollution

It is a known fact that India’s capital <keyword id="6358777" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="New-Delhi">New Delhi</keyword> is facing a crisis when it comes to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=delhi+air+pollution">air pollution</a>, to an extent that it was one and a half times worse than the pollution levels in Beijing over the past week. 
 
Recently, an Indiaspend analysis of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/This-is-how-bad-Delhis-pollution-is-and-its-goingto-get-worse-if-we-do-nothing-about-it/articleshow/50140542.cms">PM 2.5 concentration levels</a> found that "the average weekly PM 2.5 concentration in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=delhi">Delhi's</a> air was 230.9 micrograms per cubic metre (g/m³), giving it a 'very poor' rating of air quality under the guidelines of the Central Pollution Control Bureau (CPCB). This rating means that it could lead to 'respiratory illness on prolonged exposure'. 
 
Another study by the Kolkata-based Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI) shows that nearly half of Delhi’s school children suffer from permanent lung damage while around 10,000 people will die prematurely from air-pollution in Delhi. 
 Additionally, the hazardous <keyword id="68139" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Smog">smog</keyword> which engulfed the city in the past few days reducing visibility down to about 200 metres has also forced a handful number of residents to move out of Delhi or atleast contemplate living somewhere which doesn’t resemble ‘living in a gas chamber.’ 
 
Even as the dangers of breathing the polluted air looms right in front of the citizens residing in what is being considered as the most polluted cities in the world, why then are they so blithe in taking steps to protect themselves from the choking air? 
 
Granted, the sale of air purifiers are on the rise with more and more people bringing it in their homes in a bid to chase clean air to breathe, but it should be kept in mind that air purifiers work only indoors, not outdoors. 
 <keyword id="3171236" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="anti-pollution-masks">Anti-pollution masks</keyword> are widely considered the easiest way for an individual to protect themselves from not just dust but also contaminants present in the air, but in the city of Delhi, residents using such masks are still a rarity. 
 
The reason for this is undoubtedly the lack of awareness. Anish Kapoor from Shiva Industries which makes a variety of anti-pollution masks (used even by the Delhi police) available online says that there has been no change in his sales numbers as people are least bothered about masks. 
 
“Not only are they not aware of the dire consequences of the pollution, but they are also quite unaware of the existence of anti-pollution masks and where to get them. The fact that wearing a mask is not considered ‘cool’ doesn’t help either,” Kapur states. 
 
The anti-pollution masks are available both online and offline. They can be bought from chemists and from Select City Walk and shops in Khan Market, being judiciously priced from Rs 180 to Rs 750. There are designer varieties as well, which are priced Rs 2,000 onwards. 
 
According to Vikas Yadav, shopkeeper at Khan Market whose medical store sells about 20-30 masks on a good day, the majority of people who buy them are either people with existing respiratory illness or foreigners. 
 
“I expected more people to buy the masks considering how difficult breathing has become in the city, but unfortunately sales have been maegre,” Yadav summed up. 
 
He is of the belief that for the situation to improve, it is imperative that the government takes steps to educate the people on the importance of these masks and the dire effects of the air quality in the city.

State-run Convergence Energy Services Ltd (<keyword id="10463872" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="cesl" source="Orion">CESL</keyword>) on Thursday launched the biggest ever tender worth about Rs 5,500 crore to procure as many as 5,580 electric buses including 130 double deckers. CESL, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), on Thursday announced the floating of a request for proposals for the biggest ever demand for electric buses, under the '<keyword id="3770942" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="grand-challenge" source="Orion">Grand Challenge</keyword>' -- a set of homogenized demand for electric buses aggregated across five major cities, according to a statement. It said the tender value is estimated to be Rs 5,500 crore. The cities to be covered under this "Grand Challenge" are Bangalore, Delhi, Surat, Hyderabad, and Kolkata in the first phase. The first lot of e-buses are expected to hit the roads by July this year, it added. Through this 'Grand Challenge', CESL aims to deploy 5,450 single decker buses and 130 double decker buses. "I am pleased to announce today that Delhi has requested 1,500 buses under the Grand Challenge and stands ready to offer state subsidies where they are required. We are aggressively pursuing electric mobility and I commend CESL for its efforts to standardize the terms and conditions for how this is delivered," Kailash Gahlot, Transport &amp; Environment Minister of Delhi said. The benefits of participating in the Grand Challenge include lower prices realized due to aggregate demand, high quality benchmarked technology, access to FAME-II incentives, access to state incentives, air quality improvement, and access to domestic and international sources of finances. Keeping in mind the changing environment, where climate change related issues and energy independence have turned the focus on EVs, CESL will later be expanding support to more cities. Aluminium prices are reportedly expected to stay elevated in the near term. Growing disruptions in supply from China are driving prices up. The disruptions are largely because of new emission rules, power shortages and floods in July. High aluminium prices means better realisations for aluminium makers. <keyword id="149555" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mahindra-mahindra-financial-services" source="Orion">Mahindra &amp; Mahindra Financial Services</keyword> The non-banking finance company’s stock has surged 8% in the last five days led by heavy volumes. Volumes traded in the stock remained elevated above 5-18 million in the last five days. Besides, the financier was at more than 95% collection efficiency in July and expects it to continue as things normalise, said Ramesh Iyer, vice chairman and managing director of the company in an interview with <a href="https://www.cnbctv18.com/finance/raul-rebello-joins-mm-fin-as-coo-confirms-ramesh-iyer-10501961.htm">CNBC-TV18.</a> The market capitalisation of the company stood at ₹19,768 crore as on August 31. Bandhan Bank Investors seem to be picking up the Kolkata based bank’s stock on expectations of high returns. Analysts at Credit Suisse reportedly believe that the bank would give more than 20% return on equity. With this, it has set a target of ₹370 apiece. As on August 31, the stock price is at ₹284.70 per share. Analysts at Kotak Securities feel the same, as it says return on equity is likely to move more than 20%. After the bank reported a 32% on year decline in net profit due to high provisions, analysts at Kotak Securities said it sees an improvement in the second half of FY22 as the economic situation improves. It has set a target price of ₹335 per share. IndiaMART InterMESH Another stock that turned around in the last five days was B2B e-commerce platform IndiaMart InterMESH. The stock surged more than 10% in 5 days against tepid trading in the rest of August. This is primarily because the company’s stock has been added to the futures &amp; options market from August 27. The move boosts participation in the stock as investors and institutions can hedge underlying positions in the stock. Moreover, the B2B e-commerce platform’s consolidated net profit grew by 19% year-on-year to ₹88 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2021. Hindustan Aeronautics Shares of the state-owned aerospace and defence company were triggered after the company signed a $716-million deal with GE Aviation for supply of engines. Moreover, the stock’s inclusion in the futures and options segment also fueled the rally. ICICIdirect has reportedly set a target price of ₹1,380 per share for the next three months. The stock price stood at ₹1,369.35 as on August 31. <keyword id="11941399" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aptus-value-housing" source="Orion">Aptus Value Housing</keyword> Finance India Shares of the newly listed housing finance company made a turn around after its weak listing last week. Shares of the company had debuted with 6% discount to its issue price and now in the last five days, it has gained 6%. Analysts had remained positive on the stock despite tepid listing as it expects the company to do well in the long run given consistent strong financial performance, industry leading return ratios and good asset quality. Interglobe Aviation Shares of the airline company have been gaining on expectation of recovery in air traffic as pace of vaccinations goes up. A report by ICICI Securities reportedly said that the average daily passenger traffic is recovering gradually after dropping to a low in May 2021 due to second COVID-19 wave’s restrictions. Besides, the appointment of Gregg Saretsky as a special advisor also gave some support to the stock price. He is said to work closely with the executive leadership team to accelerate operational and commercial improvement opportunities at the airline. Mumbai’s car density rose by 18% in the last two years with 510 cars for kilometers of road, Times of India reported. The density is five times higher than that of New Delhi, which is also struggling with longer traffic jams and lower Air Quality Index, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/mumbais-car-density-5-times-that-of-delhi/articleshow/68553387.cms?from=mdr">reported</a> the Times of India. Other cities struggling with the problem of high car congestion include Pune with 359 cars per kilometre, followed by Kolkata with 319 cars per km and Chennai with 297 cars per km. The primary reason behind car-congestion is insufficient road space. The private car population of Mumbai is less than a third of Delhi but it has only 2,000km of road in comparison to 28,000 km road space in Delhi. The under-construction Mumbai metro network adds to the problem. There were only 430 cars per km in mid-2016, according to Maharashtra transport ministry data, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/mumbais-car-density-5-times-that-of-delhi/articleshow/68553387.cms?from=mdr">reported the Times</a> of India. However, the government <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/mumbai-news/mumbai-metro-work-causes-traffic-bottlenecks/story-yARZ73LiWSpMYFgfiKLTeM.html">expects</a> traffic to ease once the Metro project finishes by 2021. In mid-2016, car density in Mumbai was 430 cars per km, which has now gone up to 510, This has taken the total number of registered private cars to 1 million on city roads, roughly 28% of the total vehicular population in the city, which stands at 3.6 million, said the report citing an official. Nearly half the road space is occupied by private cars of all types including SUVs which is why the average speed on the Western Express highway is limited to 10kmph during peak hours. There is an urgent need to set up a parking authority which will overlook parking problems in the city and free up 50% roadspace in the city, said the reporting citing an official. The transport commissioners in the past have suggested people to using public transportation system but there’s little progress on it.
