When you are in Bollywood, don’t expect critical appreciation to go hand in hand with <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword> success. Last Friday (March 21), a total of five movies hit the theatres, but with the sole exception of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/entertainment/movies/Box-Office-RaginiMMS-2-Thrills-All-Gang-Of-Ghosts-Lacks-Finesse/articleshow/32673836.cms">Sunny Leone-starrer Ragini MMS 2</a>, the other four failed to impact the <keyword id="827271" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Box-Office">domestic box office</keyword>. As we discussed yesterday, Gang of Ghosts turned out to be an average movie but this time, let us have a look at the other three. 
 
Both <keyword id="875510" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ankhon-Dekhi">Ankhon Dekhi</keyword> and <keyword id="6526" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lakshmi">Lakshmi</keyword> are exceptional movies but look like box office bombs, unless they turn out to be <keyword id="1165784" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="sleeper-hits">sleeper hits</keyword>. Written and directed by <keyword id="51" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajat-Kapoor">Rajat Kapoor</keyword> (he also plays one of the lead roles), the multi-starrer flick Ankhon Dekhi had poor response on Day 1 and could not even cross Rs 5 crore during the opening weekend, as per industry estimates (official numbers are yet to come in). It is the same tale of lacklustre <keyword id="2168413" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="BO-performance">BO performance</keyword> with Nagesh Kukunoor-directed Lakshmi although this one should be the most lauded, going by its sensitive yet realistic treatment of <keyword id="6357490" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Human-trafficking">human trafficking</keyword>, <keyword id="6476483" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Child-prostitution">child prostitution</keyword> and <keyword id="1834687" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sexploitation">sexploitation</keyword> of <keyword id="624" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Women">women</keyword> in general. As for <keyword id="2165865" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kolkata-Junction">Kolkata Junction</keyword>, a drama-thriller directed by <keyword id="10158" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Anjan-Dutt">Anjan Dutt</keyword>, the opening weekend collections reportedly stood at Rs 9 crore. 
 Theme-wise, these three flicks vary widely, but one can also notice the similarities without much effort. All three of them are <keyword id="1108336" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="low-budget-movies">low-budget movies</keyword>, don’t have so-called ‘hot’ star cast (although the veterans have actually acted their hearts out), the promotion part has been pretty low key and finally, none of them hit too many screens like the big-budget films do. Should we call that a sure-shot recipe for box office disaster? The promotion part needs to strategised well if good movies are to get great response. 
 
 
 Coming back to <keyword id="819874" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="the-movies">the movies</keyword>, we must say Ankhon Dekhi is worth the watch. It is a typical Rajat Kapoor film – funny, satirical and at the same time, deeply touching. It tells the tale of Raje Bauji (<keyword id="62834" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sanjay-Mishra">Sanjay Mishra</keyword>), a Delhi-based man in his late 50s, who only believes what he sees. The <keyword id="6374782" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="journey">journey</keyword> that follows walks you through the life of a commoner and the compromises he is compelled to make to survive in a hostile world. As one <keyword id="210839" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Critic">critic</keyword> says, “It is cinematically ecstatic... made beautifully on a very low budget… high on performances.” 
 
Nagesh Kukunoor-directed Lakshmi is an exceptional story of trauma and tragedy, courage and triumph. <keyword id="250" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Singer">Singer</keyword> <keyword id="294857" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Monali-Thakur">Monali Thakur</keyword> makes her acting debut as Lakshmi, a 13-year-old who has been kidnapped and sold into prostitution. The ruthless reality portrayed by every single character makes us squirm and ask ourselves the very question the movie is asking – are we being human? 
 
It’s not surprising that <keyword id="6354925" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kolkata">Kolkata</keyword> Junction has done a bit better at the ticket windows than the other two. After all, who can escape the allure of an entertaining drama-thriller featuring the likes of <keyword id="6354338" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Naseeruddin-Shah">Naseeruddin Shah</keyword>, <keyword id="29287" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="kay-kay-menon">Kay Kay Menon</keyword>, <keyword id="6354732" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sonali-Kulkarni">Sonali Kulkarni</keyword>, <keyword id="4666" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jimmy-Shergill">Jimmy Shergill</keyword>, <keyword id="17610" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sandhya-Mridul">Sandhya Mridul</keyword> and <keyword id="6059" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rituparna-Sengupta">Rituparna Sengupta</keyword>? Both the storyline and the performance are bound to thrill the audience and the numbers may look better after the second weekend.

A total of five movies hit the theatres on Friday the 21st but none could bang the <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword> like Sunny Leone-starrer <keyword id="1020628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ragini-MMS-2">Ragini MMS 2</keyword>. The sequel to the hit <keyword id="30679" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="horror-flick">horror flick</keyword> <keyword id="500381" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ragini-MMS">Ragini MMS</keyword> netted Rs 24.5 crore at home during the debut weekend while 4th day (Monday, March 24) collections stood at around Rs 4.5 crore nett at the <keyword id="827271" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Box-Office">domestic box office</keyword>, as per industry estimates. 
 “RaginiMMS2 Fri 8.43 cr, Sat 7.29 crore, Sun 8.78 crore. Total: Rs 24.5 crore nett. India biz,” trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted. In spite of a slight drop in business on the second day, this <keyword id="2165873" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Horror-erotica">horror erotica</keyword> picked up pace and turned out to be this year’s third highest grosser over the opening weekend, after <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Jai-Ho-Salman-FightsThrough-Clichs-Fails-To-Create-A-Dhoom/articleshow/29505187.cms">Jai Ho</a> (around Rs 60 crore) and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Box-Office-Gunday-LeavesYou-Clueless-But-Cash-Register-is-Ringing/articleshow/30626422.cms">Gunday</a> (Rs 43.9 crore). The movie has also surpassed the lifetime business of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Madhuri-starrer-DedhIshqiya-Stumbles-At-Box-Office-Yaariyan-Romps-Past/articleshow/28798719.cms">Dedh Ishqiya</a> (Rs 27 crore) and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Highway-ExploresShadow-Zones-But-Fails-To-Impress-At-Box-Office/articleshow/31008054.cms">Highway</a> (Rs 27.25 crore), as per Koimoi. 
 
Along with Ragini MMS 2, four other movies were also released on March 21. These include <keyword id="1600822" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gang-of-Ghosts">Gang of Ghosts</keyword>, Ankhon Dekhi, <keyword id="6526" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lakshmi">Lakshmi</keyword> and <keyword id="2165865" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kolkata-Junction">Kolkata Junction</keyword>. But keeping in mind how horror has flourished this week, we are focusing on just two movies today – Ragini MMS 2 and Gang of Ghosts. We will have another ‘Box Office’ story tomorrow and bring you the rest of the three movies, along with their box office performances. 
 Coming to performance, let us tell you that the <keyword id="1465525" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="horror-comedy">horror comedy</keyword> Gang of Ghosts did decently at the domestic box office and total collection after the first weekend was around Rs 14.25 crore, against a total budget of Rs 15 crore. That is not at all disheartening, taking into consideration the tough competition posed by the Ragini sequel, which is already way ahead of its total budget of Rs 18 crore. 
 
 
 Although <keyword id="1983057" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Adult-movie-star">adult movie star</keyword> <keyword id="836886" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sunny-Leone">Sunny Leone</keyword> made her Bollywood debut with <keyword id="25529" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="jism-2">Jism 2</keyword>, it is Ragini MMS 2 that has given her the biggest break in India till date. Interestingly, <keyword id="303" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Director">director</keyword> <keyword id="820957" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bhushan-Patel">Bhushan Patel</keyword> had earlier helmed another successful horror flick – 1920: Evil Returns. Ragini MMS 2 has been produced by <keyword id="6354597" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ekta-Kapoor">Ekta Kapoor</keyword> and <keyword id="154993" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shobha-Kapoor">Shobha Kapoor</keyword>. 
 
Now that we know the awesome numbers the movie is commanding, let us have a look at what’s selling Ragini MMS 2. Well, that’s a kind of no-brainer in this context. A <keyword id="2165868" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sizzling-Sunny-Leone">sizzling Sunny Leone</keyword> flaunting her assets throughout the movie and looking a bit more confident than usual (who wouldn’t when one is portraying her own character), and some <keyword id="2165869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Spooky-elements">spooky elements</keyword> craftily thrown in here and there to keep the fear factor alive are tantalising enough to be lapped up by the audience. Add to that chartbuster songs like <keyword id="38162" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Baby-Doll">Baby Doll</keyword> and <keyword id="2019181" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chaar-Botal-Vodka">Chaar Botal Vodka</keyword>, and you have the perfect recipe for box office success. 
 
Unlike the prequel (Ragini MMS) that featured a balanced mix of <keyword id="2165871" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Horror-and-sex">horror and sex</keyword>, the equation has changed this time, along with the cast, and tilted heavily towards the explicit. However, the horrex picks up from where the earlier one had left, telling us the fatal story of a movie production team that has come to the infamous haunted haveli to make a movie on Uday and Ragini, whose earlier escapade in the house had gone awry. In fact, it won’t be a bad idea to watch Ragini MMS once again before you watch the second in the series. Now that the leaked MMS made by Uday has gone viral, film-maker Rocks (<keyword id="6532013" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Parvin-Dabas">Parvin Dabas</keyword>) decides to cash in on the scandal; ropes in Sunny as the female lead and lands at the house for the shoot. Here, Sunny seems to be at her explicit best but the bone-chilling moments are not missing altogether, in spite of their routine predictability. For instance, you will find the quintessential exorcist in <keyword id="2165872" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dr-Meera-Dutta">Dr Meera Dutta</keyword> (<keyword id="18941" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Divya-Dutta">Divya Dutta</keyword>), to say nothing of the usual trappings of a <keyword id="1571333" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="paranormal-thriller">paranormal thriller</keyword>. Maybe erotica and a heavy dose of <keyword id="2165874" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Quirky-humour">quirky humour</keyword> have been the saving grace of this movie, along with the terror lacing. 
 
The other horror release of the week is Gang of Ghosts, a photocopy adaptation of the original Bengali flick, <keyword id="494729" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bhooter-Bhobishyot">Bhooter Bhobishyot</keyword>. Directed by <keyword id="2218" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Satish-Kaushik">Satish Kaushik</keyword>, this one tells an intriguing story of an <keyword id="2165876" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Over-urbanised-Mumbai">over-urbanised Mumbai</keyword> and how the departed souls are compelled to leave their last stronghold as haunted houses are speedily turned into high-rises and multiplexes. The original one has a touching message in the guise of comedy – one can actually sense the pain of getting uprooted as your city turns too affluent to be affordable. But the <keyword id="39358" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="hindi-remake">Hindi remake</keyword> falls flat in spite of veterans like <keyword id="6533" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Anupam-Kher">Anupam Kher</keyword> and <keyword id="297" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jackie-Shroff">Jackie Shroff</keyword>. Still, those who have not watched the original may like it enough – that could be one possible reason behind its moderate box office success.

MMS 2 Thrills All; Gang Of Ghosts Lacks Finesse

The police detained the Father of the minor accused in the <keyword id="19897309" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pune" source="keywords">Pune</keyword> <keyword id="20048182" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="car-accident" source="keywords">car accident</keyword> case on Tuesday morning, said police officials. The father of the minor was identified as Vishal Agarwal. According to the Commissioner of Police, Pune, Amitesh Kumar, father of the minor accused, has been detained from the Sambhajinagar area of Aurangabad district in Maharashtra this morning. In the early hours of Sunday, two individuals, including a young woman, lost their lives after a luxury car collided with their motorcycle near KalyNagar in Pune, said police officials. On Monday the Pune Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar said that the Pune Police are seeking permission to try the <keyword id="21723651" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="juvenile-accused" source="keywords">juvenile accused</keyword> in the Pune rash driving case, which killed two people, as an adult under sections of the Juvenile Justice Act. "Police have taken yesterday's incident seriously. We have taken action under section 304 of IPC, which is a non-bailable section as it was a heinous crime...A drunk car driver was rashly driving on a narrow lane," the Pune Commissioner of Police told ANI. Earlier on May 19, the Juvenile Justice Board granted bail to the accused involved in a recent car accident in Pune, said the juvenile accused's advocate, <keyword id="21345779" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prashant-Patil" source="keywords">Prashant Patil</keyword>. The bail comes with several conditions aimed at rehabilitation and awareness. The conditions include the following: The accused should work with the <keyword id="20003772" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="traffic-police" source="keywords">traffic police</keyword> of Yerawada for 15 days; the accused should write an essay on the accident; should get treatment from the concerned doctor to help him quit drinking; and should take psychiatric counselling and submit a report. The deceased have been identified as Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa. The tragic incident occurred at about 3:15 am. An FIR has been lodged, and an investigation is underway. "A bike rider and pillion rider were killed when a speeding car hit them from behind in the Kalyani Nagar area last night. The accused has been arrested, and an FIR has been registered. We are also verifying the certificates to ascertain the accused's age, as he claims to be a minor," stated DCP Magar. The police have charged the minor with rash and negligent driving and causing harm by endangering life or personal safety under IPC sections 304A, 279, 337, 338, and 427, along with relevant sections of the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Act, added the DCP. The juvenile's father and the bar that served him liquor face charges under Sections 75 and 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act, said the city police in Pune. According to the FIR, the accident occurred as a group of friends were returning home on their motorcycles after a party at a restaurant in Kalyani Nagar. At the Kalyani Nagar junction, a speeding luxury car struck the bike carrying Awadhiya and Costa, causing them to fall and die instantly. The car subsequently crashed into roadside pavement railings. In 1854, Ronald MacDonald Stephens, the father of the East Indian Railway Company, envisioned a railway station in Delhi, and in 1864, the Old Delhi Railway Station opened from a small building. However, it was opened to the general public only after about a decade. In the year 1854, Ronald MacDonald Stephens, envisaged laying a rail line from Calcutta (now Kolkata) to Allahabad (now Prayagraj) and Delhi to Lahore. Later, while making changes in this, instead of Delhi, there was a proposal to lay a railway line through Meerut, which was strongly opposed by businessmen and other citizens of Delhi. In this connection, in a committee constituted in 1863. Narayan Das Nagarwala and other members appealed to the British Empire not to deprive Delhi of the railway line. They argued that the business of Delhi would be affected by the government's decision. It will also be unfair to the businessmen of Delhi who have invested money in the railway company. After the displeasure of the people of Delhi, finally Charles Wood, the Board President of the East India Company, decided to run the train via Delhi. Along with this, the existence of Old Delhi Railway Station also came to the fore. At present, where the Old Delhi railway station is located, there used to be a large population at that time - which was shifted to Paharganj, Sadar Bazar, Karol Bagh before the construction of the station. According to historian Sohail Hashmi, the railway line passed through the old city uniting the two parts. On the north side of which were the houses and churches of the British residents and on the south side was the residence of the local Delhiites. Interesting stories are embedded in the veins of this station; another story is that why the old Delhi railway station was built in Shahjahanabad near the Red Fort. The last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar (1837-1857) was deeply troubled by the prospect of introducing the railway in Delhi. He feared that the new invention of transport would disturb the peace of the city. This was the reason why Zafar requested to move the rail line to the north of the city. It is worth mentioning that only after Delhi was completely captured in 1803, the East India Company started expanding the rail network in India in terms of earning profits and expanding their presence. The plan to bring Delhi on the rail map was the result of this. The British Empire worked in a much planned manner to choose the place where the railway station should be built. After the failure of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the British Empire had chosen this place as a strategy for the railway station in Delhi. Revolutionary sentiments were strong in Shahjahanabad. Anyway, it was the insistence of the British that the railway line would pass through the Red Fort and for this even a corner of the Red Fort was defaced at that time. The British army was shifted to Shahjahanabad, keeping in mind that it would be easy to control the situation if there is a violent movement in the future. Prior to the establishment of the new imperial capital New Delhi after 1911, the Old Delhi Railway Station was the only point of transportation for the entire city and the Agra-Delhi railway line, now called Lutyens' Delhi, and the site for the hexagonal All India War Memorial (now India Gate) and Kingsway (now Kartavyapath). East Indian Railway Company shifted the line along the Yamuna river and opened the new track in 1924. Minto (now Shivaji) and Hardinge (now Tilak) rail bridges were built for this reorganised line. It established a new railway station in this area between Ajmeri Gate and Paharganj, which is now called New Delhi Railway Station. That is, after the year 1926, the burden of Old Delhi station was shared with New Delhi. The railway station building, built by the British contractor Benjamin Fletcher, increased in importance after Delhi became the capital in the year 1931, so the railway station complex was further expanded in the year 1934-35. The number of platforms was increased and electric signals were installed. A significant portion of the northern wall of Shahjahanabad was demolished to facilitate the laying of the railway track and the construction of the station building. After independence, along with the progress of industrial and economy, importance was also given to passenger facilities. Similarly, after the formation of Northern Railway in 1952, Delhi Junction became its part. The yard of this station was renovated in the year 1959, which increased the capacity of the yard manifold. Expansion of washing line, platform shed, parcel shed was done during the year 1985-88. The 114-year-old iconic colonial-era building is all set to get a facelift. The General Manager of Northern Railway said that they have spent about Rs 20 crore on the redevelopment of the station in the last few years. Arrangements were made such as renovated ticket counters, a temporary roof with LED lights in the main hall, and battery-operated golf carts that can be hired to travel between platforms. According to the Indian Railways, under the Amrit Bharat Station scheme, efforts will be made to improve amenities at Old Delhi station. The main focus will be on improving station accessibility, providing free Wi-Fi, and improving amenities such as waiting rooms, toilets, better information system for passengers, executive lounge, removal of unwanted structures near the station, widening of roads to provide pedestrian walkways and well planned parking area. Along with this, multi-level parking, state-of-the-art food court, gaming zone for children, air-conditioned waiting hall and escalators, CCTV cameras will be installed at the station. As per the recent information provided by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), the Delhi Junction will soon get a luxury sleeping pod facility. The sleeping pods will also have drinking water, a charging socket for mobile phones and electronic devices, a locker room, internet and a deluxe bathroom. In the coming days, New Delhi and Old Delhi railway stations will be connected to each other internally by a single route. After this, passengers will be able to reach from one station to another in 15 minutes. --IANS ptk/sha
