Two passengers who arrived at NSCBI Airport from Bangkok have tested positive for the <keyword id="8604864" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="novel-coronavirus">novel coronavirus</keyword>, Airports Authority of India officials said on Thursday. With this, a total of three passengers have tested positive for the novel <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> in Kolkata. A passenger called Himadri Barman tested positive on Tuesday, and Nagendra Singh tested positive on Wednesday, the Director of NSCBI Airport, Kaushik Bhattacharjee, told . Both of them were sent to Beliaghata ID Hospital, he said. "Earlier a passenger called Anita Oraon had also tested positive during thermal scanning," Bhattacharjee said. Already two airlines which had direct flights between Kolkata and China have suspended their flights. Low cost carier <keyword id="6354706" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IndiGo">IndiGo</keyword> has temporarily suspended its flights between Kolkata and Guangzhou from February 6. "In line with the WHO guideline to contain the spread of coronavirus, IndiGo will be suspending its Kolkata- Guangzhou service from February 6, 2020 to February 25, 2020 and Guangzhou-Kolkata from February 7 till February 26," the airline had said in a statement. After IndiGo, <keyword id="266841" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="China-Eastern-Airlines">China Eastern Airlines</keyword> suspended its flights between Kolkata and Kunming in China from February 10 to February 29. Passengers of flights coming to Kolkata from Kunming and Guangzhou in China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Bangkok were being screened since January 17. At present, passengers arriving from Hong Kong, Singapore and Bangkok are being screened as no flights are operating to and from China.

Not all is gloomy for airport operator Airport Authority of India (<keyword id="47439" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aai">AAI</keyword>) this Christmas. The airport operator has witnessed its revenues from non-aeronautical operations surge by 52% in the past three years. 
	 
	“The non-aeronautical revenue of AAI due to the effort and utilization of various avenues had increased from Rs 819.10 crores in 2010-11 to Rs 1,241 crores in 2013-14 making a growth of about 52% in 3 years,” said Dr Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State for Civil Aviation in the Lok Sabha. 
	 Non-aeronautical operations of the AAI include duty-free shops, operating Express Courier terminal as well as Common User Cargo Terminal. “AAI had already introduced various new concepts to increase the non-aeronautical potential like introduction of master concessionaire in the field of food and beverages, <keyword id="1422844" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Duty-Free-Shops">Duty free shops</keyword> and advertisement, Express Courier Terminal and Common User Cargo Terminal,” added Dr Sharma. 
	 The AAI has been aiming to strategically increase its revenues from non-core businesses over the years and has also increased the area allotted for such services by over 10% every year. For instance, the airport operator increased the area allocated for non aeronautical services from 23,119 square meter (sqm) in 2010-11 to 42,996 sqm in 2013-14 at the <keyword id="63145" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="chennai-airport">Chennai airport</keyword>. 
	 “Similarly, at <keyword id="47933" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kolkata-airport">Kolkata Airport</keyword>, the area under non-aeronautical services has been increased from 49,668 sqm to 6,00,029 sqm in 2013-14. In case of Trivandrum Airport, the increase in non-aeronautical areas is from 3,217 sqm in the year 2010-11 to 4,029 sqm in the year 2013-14,” stated Dr Sharma.

<ul><li>There are approximately 470 aeroplanes in the country as of 2017. </li><li>This number is projected to triple by the next decade. </li><li>The country is lagging behind on infrastructural growth that can accommodate new flights and aircrafts. </li></ul>The Indian aviation industry has <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/airlines-/-aviation/indian-carriers-are-all-fuelled-up-but-have-nowhere-to-land/articleshow/64641622.cms">hit a snag</a>, the airports are running out of preferred slots and parking space. The lack of flying slots and spaces to park aircrafts is due to the the fact that the airports are super busy and working overtime. What this has lead to, besides flight operators having to fight out for slots and space, is a bottleneck for the country’s growth in aviation. And this issue is mostly affecting newer airline carriers like Vistara and AirAsia which are rapidly expanding its business but have to deal with ‘undesirable’ slots for their operations. Since its inception Indian aviation industry has grown significantly. From 381 airplanes in 2008 to approximately 480 in 2017 along with <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/india-set-to-become-third-largest-buyer-of-passenger-planes/articleshow/58937405.cms">plans</a> to buy more aircrafts to deal with increasing flight demands, the industry’s growth in on an upward curve. The country is looking at nearly 1080 aeroplanes, out of which, more than 700 are scheduled for delivery within the next decade, and 400 within the next five years. As of June last year, a total of 880 aircrafts were on order, with most of them being placed by low-cost carriers such as IndiGo and SpiceJet. And this bulk demand as left <keyword id="6355752" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="airport">airport</keyword> authorities concerned.

 While more aircrafts mean more flights and therefore more money coming in for these airline operators, the airports are not adequately equipped to accommodate all the airplanes at the same time. And this leads to the airports only being able to offer slots at ‘undesirable’ hours, time slots that are not very popular with travellers, for newer flights. The Mumbai and Delhi airports, which are among the busiest in the world, are so packed with flights that they are only offering new slots between 11PM and 5AM. Airports in Goa and Pune are also offering only night slots. Airports in Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata also don't have any slots open during peak timings. What is making matters worse for domestic carriers is that even smaller airports like Jaipur, Jammu, Srinagar and Patna and many more are facing similar issues and can offer time slots that aren’t popular. Currently, 97% of the slots on the Mumbai airport are with the older airline carriers. In Delhi and Bengaluru, 89% and 86% are with older airlines respectively. At Chennai and Pune, the share is about 93% and 91% respectively.

 Airport congestion is a world-wide phenomenon. But the situation is worse in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>. The government has big plans of linking smaller, less-served areas to bigger airports under its regional connectivity programme - and this would just mean more congestion. Parking space in airports is also a major concern, but the country has already started to address this problem. All airports, excluding Mumbai, have started building parking bays. Airports Authority of India (AAI) has been set in action and plans to add 273 parking bays at 24 airports to help resolve parking issues. AAI is also trying to increase airside capacity by increasing work efficiency to address this congestion problem.

Due to a communication breakdown, the Kolkata's Air Traffic Control (ATC) lost contact with 85 airborne aircrafts for 10 minutes, risking lives of thousands of passengers. 
 
Thirty five controllers scrambled for mobile phones as radars and vital VHF radio link failure continued for 1 hour 40 minutes. The screens that display positions of aircraft in Kolkata air traffic region went blank. 
 
"What happened is a controller's nightmare. Even landlines were not working. But, we managed to contact Nagpur and Varanasi ATC to relay information to pilots," a controller said. 
 
The controllers then switched to the emergency protocol and turned to the very high-frequency communication sets to contact airborne pilots. 
 
There were around 85 planes in the ATR and controllers had no control over 30. 
 
Moreover, they also lost contact with their counterparts in Dhaka and Myanmar. 
 
The incident started at 7.35 am and the BSNL-maintained link was restored at 9.15am. 
 
The incident will be probed by Directorate General of Civil Aviation and Airports Authority of India.

After they landed at the airport yesterday, the pre-paid counter didn’t accept the notes they carried a month back. Forget booking taxi through apps, for they don’t own a smartphone. Finally a normal yellow taxi decided to ferry them on the condition of paying full Rs 500 without any change in return. The septuagenarians had to shell out Rs 500 for a distance of mere 10 kilometres. Possessing a great sense of humour, the septuagenarian man told the author, “We don’t have any <keyword id="6356023" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Black-Money">black money</keyword>. But a note of Rs 500 at the time of economic black out.”

In a bid to expand its connectivity, the Airport Authority of India (<keyword id="47439" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aai">AAI</keyword>) will be marketing 29 airports in the country to international airlines participating in <keyword id="2530577" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Route-Development-Forum">World Route Development Forum</keyword> that is being held in Chicago between 20th and 23rd September. 
	 
	The airports that AAI plans to develop, in order to market among the international airlines, include both domestic and international airports. These airports include Amritsar, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Lucknow, Leh, Srinagar, Varanasi (Banaras), Bhubaneswar, Gaya, Kolkata, Port Blair, Ranchi, Raipur, Guwahati, Ahmedabad, Aurangabad, Bhopal, Indore, Goa, Pune, Surat, Chennai, Coimbatore, Calicut, Madurai, Mangalore, Trivandrum, Trichy and Visakhapatnam. 
	 
	The apex body of airports has held one-on-one meetings with the carriers and has an exclusive stand at the forum. “The airport-specific brochures brought out by AAI on the occasion included salient features of the airports, catchment areas they belong to, aerodrome reference code, tourist attractions and aviation and tourism potential,” said the ministry in a statement. 
	 
	The ministry added that AAI plans to come up with no-frills airports to enhance air connectivity as well as facilitate availability of infrastructure in the sector, which will ensure smooth air operations across airports in the country. 
	 
	“Government of India is focusing and pushing for development of airport infrastructure in tier-III cities. AAI will have to play a key role in implementation and execution of no-frill airports in the country. As per the estimates, about 50 such airports are on the anvil. The five airports included in Phase-I are Tezu in Arunachal Pradesh, Jharsuguda in Odisha, Hubli and Belgaum in Karnataka and Kishangarh in Rajasthan,” added the ministry. 
	 
	The apex body has been participating World Route Development Forum for the past six years. AAI has 125 airports which consist of 21 international airports domestic airports, 7 customs airports (4 civil enclaves) and 19 other civil enclaves. Among the international airports, AAI has 3 civil enclaves and 3 joint ventures. 
	 
	Currently, Indian airports, on the domestic front, handle nearly 122 million passengers while 47 million international passengers. The airports expected to handle 217 million domestic and 76 million international passengers by 2020.
