<ul class="summary-list"><li>"<keyword id="9217126" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="the-old-guard">The Old Guard</keyword>" fight coordinator <keyword id="4674752" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="danny-hernandez">Danny Hernandez</keyword> told Insider how the wild airplane fight scene was pulled off.</li><li>Hernandez worked with stars <keyword id="22145" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Charlize-Theron">Charlize Theron</keyword> and <keyword id="7368319" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Kiki-Layne">KiKi Layne</keyword> for four months getting them ready for the movie.</li><li>For the airplane fight, he broke it up into small segments that both had to master.</li><li>In the beginning, the two would train on their own, often getting the moves down by doing them repeatedly in front of a mirror.</li><li>Then they moved on to working with a stunt partner.</li><li>And finally, before filming the scene, Theron and Layne did the scene multiple times in a day to build up their cardio for when they had to do it for real on the day.</li><li>Watch how the finished fight turned out at the end of this story.</li></ul>In Charlize Theron's latest action movie, "The Old Guard" (available now on <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword>), the star plays an immortal warrior who, with her team of mercenaries, has been battling foes all over the world for centuries.To pull it off so Theron looked like a warrior with 6,000-years-worth of fighting knowledge, the movie's fight coordinator Danny Hernandez spent four months working with the Oscar-winner and her co-stars on a wide range of martial art disciplines before cameras starting rolling.That hard work is displayed throughout Gina Prince-Bythewood's movie, but especially in its first major fight sequence which takes place between Andy (Theron) and Nile (KiKi Layne) inside a cargo plane as it's flying through the air.Andy and Nile's thrilling hand-to-hand combat as the plane zips through the sky doesn't just show off Andy's fighting expertise but that Nile, a new immortal member, is worthy to join Andy's team.Hernandez said the goal with that scene was to make it as realistic as possible, which meant Theron and Layne would have to do their own fighting. To accomplish this, that meant the actors would have to do a lot of practice."Having four months of training prior really helped out tremendously," Hernandez told Insider. "It's a lot of work, self-sacrifice, pain, and bruises. Because it's all for real. No cheats. No stunt doubles."To make that plane fight work, Hernandez said the training was all done in steps, or as he called them "segments.""I would start with a six-beat segment," he said. "Correcting all the hand positions and footwork."Hernandez would even have Theron and Layne do the fight moves by themselves repeatedly in front of a mirror to watch how they were doing it and get it right.Then they would elevate to working with a stunt partner to do the fight segment. Once they mastered it, they would evolve to more segments of the plane fight. Often the actors would train for a week on each segment.Here's a glimpse at some of that training from a video Theron posted on Twitter:Through the months, the segments would grow until finally both Theron and Layne could do the entire plane fight sequence on their own.Then it was time for both actors to "fight" against one another."Closer to filming the scene we were doing the whole thing multiple times a day to build up their cardio," Hernandez said. "Because we knew they would be doing the fight for multiple takes."Finally, it was time to shoot the scene and it turned out that the plane fight would be the first thing shot for the movie.Hernandez said that led to some butterflies for both actors, as it took a couple of takes for them to do the fight correctly all the way through."What I always suggest is don't cut the camera, let them keep going, and by the second or third time you have the magic," said Hernandez.Hernandez, who has done the fight coordinating for <keyword id="406" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Movies">movies</keyword> like "Avengers: Endgame" and "Birds of Prey," said the best kind of fights are the ones where the audiences can see that the actors are really doing it because it heightens the authenticity of those characters.The airplane fight in "The Old Guard" certainly pulls that off. It's decided that he is to go into exile and can't rejoin them for 100 years. That leads to an emotional goodbye between Andy and Booker. Since she's likely now mortal, the exile means they may never see each other again. A sequel would also let us explore the evolution of Nile's character. It's clear the new immortal member is special. If the sequel were set a few years or a decade into the future, it would be fascinating to watch how Nile has become even more skilled than she already was in the first movie.And then there's Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor). Andy takes a liking to the former CIA agent's impressive research into the group's work over the centuries. Andy believes Copley can serve a purpose — he's the only one who fully appreciates how the lives they've saved have shaped humanity to what it is today.So she gives him a role on the team: Find them missions and keep their identities secret."When we leave a footprint in the sand, in the snow, in the ether, you're going to sweep it," Andy says. Because she's immortal, she's been endlessly drowning for over 500 years.But by the movie's end, Quynh has somehow managed to escape her underwater prison and surprises Booker in Paris, where he's currently spending his time while exiled from the team. And then [artist and cocreator] Leandro [Fernández] and I actually make the comic and [production studio] Skydance says "we really like it and by the way you can write the screenplay." And here we are in July 2020 and there's a movie coming out on Netflix, which could not have been a better choice. It's directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and stars Charlize Theron and KiKi Layne ... so yeah, I think "bewildered" is a good word. Clark: So when did Netflix come on board?Rucka: Skydance optioned the comic [in 2017]. We got the screenplay ready and they were very excited, then Gina came on to direct [in 2018]. Around early preproduction I think, Netflix comes aboard [in 2019]. They said they really wanted to release it to streaming and potentially theatrical.[A person familiar with the situation told Business Insider that Netflix considered a theatrical release before the coronavirus pandemic, and that thinking changed in March.]We had started out thinking it was a fairly modest film in a lot of ways. And when Netflix comes in, we all of a sudden have a much more prominent project than I had thought of from the start. I thought it was fairly quiet in its own way, knowing it's an action movie. But it's restrained and subtle for an action film. It could have been done for a reasonably limited budget. But Netflix brings the opportunity to do so much more because of their resources.Clark: What are the hardest parts of adapting a comic you wrote into a movie?Rucka: The fundamental truth is that the work must change because the medium changes. The mediums have different strengths. The first truth in approaching the adaptation was to retain what attracted Skydance to it, so the heart and soul of the material, but in a way that works on the screen. That then leads to choices that are pretty mechanical and self-evident.<div type="image" title="the old guard netflix" height="1180" width="2196" msid="76897539" hostid="261"></div>Clark: What were some of those choices?Rucka: I'll give you a great example. Leandro has a beautiful sense of graphic storytelling and design. He also plays a bit with caricature so what he's drawing can be realistic but not literal. When we reveal to the reader that the characters can be shot as many times as possible and still be fine, and when Leandro draws that, he can draw someone with an eyeball hanging from their optic nerve and it doesn't look as gross as it sounds. It looks kind of silly. You can't do that in a movie. The literalism would have been so off-putting and grotesque. Tonally, it would have been a different movie. We found ourselves making choices with an eye to that.In terms of character, Nile's [played by KiKi Layne] story in the comic isn't influencing the plot of the overall work. It doesn't truly alter the outcome. You can't do that in a movie. Nile needed much more attention when it came time to adapt than I had given her in the comic.Clark: Were choices like this made during the writing process or did they come from working with [director] Gina [Prince-Bythewood]?Rucka: Gina had a very clear vision. The comic is goofy. These are Looney Tunes characters. They're all Wile E. Coyote. What became very clear working with Gina early on is that she was focusing on the emotional truth. That meant that a lot of the glibness of the source material, and some of it in the early drafts of the screenplay, went away. It becomes darker. The laughs come less from gag and more from the emotional truth of situations.Clark: In terms of story and specific plot points, what were some things you knew worked in the comic that wouldn't in the movie?Rucka: In the comic, getting Nile from Afghanistan to Paris takes two pages. In the movie, at that point in the story, Nile has questions that need answers. She's not a willing participant. That's how you get the plane sequence in the movie. In early drafts, there had been even more to it. Getting Nile onto the plane had been a sequence in and of itself. That's the prime difference. Comics rely on a lot of effort on the part of the reader without the reader really thinking they're providing it. A comic implies and lets you do the work by filling in between the panels what leads from A to B to C. Movies don't do that.<div type="image" title="the old guard netflix" height="1240" width="1962" msid="76897543" hostid="261"></div>Clark: Are you starting to feel more comfortable writing screenplays than comics? Rucka: My first literary agent out of grad school gave me advice: you're a storyteller first and foremost. I say this as a guy who started as a novelist then I moved into comics and novels and now I am writing screenplays and novels and comics. The luxury in that is at 50 years old I feel I have mastery of different skill sets. I can think about what medium will serve the story most. Clark: The movie ends on a big cliffhanger, so I was wondering if that came naturally or if you had a sequel in mind?Rucka: When Leandro and I finished the first comic series, I said "we're done." Almost immediately Leandro said he wanted to do more. So I could see three acts for an overall story, even before Skydance and Netflix. So the final scene of the movie is what I've come to refer to as the "in case of sequel, break glass" scene. If Netflix decided they wanted to make more, we absolutely can. If we do not, I am very content with the movie. I think it's a complete work. While it does end on a question, it doesn't demand another movie. It opens the door for more.Clark: Just to clarify, the comic is planned to be three acts? Is there a release date set for the third story?Rucka: Issue five — the last issue — of the second story, which is called "The Old Guard: Force Multiplied," is out next week [July 15]. And then Leandro and I are starting work on the third story in the next month or so. When it comes to comics, if Leandro were to start drawing something in September, I don't see us releasing anything until summer of 2021.

Then there were the countless F-bomb-filled jokes, which exemplified Murphy's raw comedy style at the time.Thirty-three years later, Prince Akeem returns to Queens to seek out the son he never knew he had.The unlikely sequel, "<keyword id="8014719" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Coming-2-America">Coming 2 America</keyword>," features many of the actors from the original, including James Earl Jones, Shari Headley and John Amos, but not the adult language, leading the film to getting a PG-13 rating. Eddie and I had a lot of discussions about this because the bathers primarily pushed it into [an] R [rating] and then nowadays you can say the F word only a certain amount of times. But otherwise "Coming to America" occupies a completely different place than any of the other Eddie Murphy movies like "Trading Places" and "48 Hrs."It's more of a fairy tale. It's not particularly crude or vulgar in any way. I noticed people on Twitter being like, "Oh my God, this movie's PG-13. What have they done?" The reality is the more we tested it, the jokes that landed were the ones that stayed there and it came out PG-13. We weren't given [instructions that] "it better be PG-13." We did all different kinds of jokes and it landed in a sweet place. I'm actually happy it's PG-13. This is your second movie working with Eddie following Netflix's "Dolemite Is My Name." Why has the collaboration worked?I really love working with actors, and what I mean by that is I respect their ideas and I want to make my sets... comfortable for everybody to be who they are.Directing is like wrangling. You've got these artists and they can go in so many different directions - some are better after lunch, some are better before lunch - so my job is to encourage everyone to come in at their own rhythm and ideas. But I never got in touch with him during production.I have recently reached out to him just to see if he would like to see the movie.Do you know if he's seen "Coming 2 America" yet?I'm waiting to find out if he's seen it. But his movies are so important: "Blues Brothers," "Trading Places," "Coming to America," the "Thriller" music video. He has a way of doing comedy and action and music all in his movies where it's a particular style. I recently realized I owe a lot more to the films of John Landis. You have some amazing cameos in one particular scene in "Coming 2 America." I won't spoil any, but was it a challenge to pull that off?It really wasn't. It all happened within two days so nobody really wanted to leave the soundstage on those days. And we were at the Tyler Perry Studios.One of those days, I'll will never forget this, we had all these amazing cameos and plus Eddie, Arsenio, and Tracy Morgan and Wesley Snipes, who also star in "Coming 2 America." Then Will Smith and Martin Lawrence <a href="https://etcanada.com/news/534426/casts-of-coming-to-america-2-and-bad-boys-3-come-together-for-epic-selfie-video/">were filming "Bad Boys for Life" at the studio next door</a>.It was one of the greatest days of my life being involved in all that and everyone just wanted to be there. The stylists told Insider that they were mindful of having these hairdos reflect the eras the characters grew up in, diverging from the styles of Prince Akeem and Semmi that were based on the first film and more so influenced by European culture."And this new generation we felt would be more influenced by the African culture or African American culture," Farmer said. "Because here in America, too, the kids are embracing their natural hair, we felt that in Zamunda the kids would embrace their natural hair even more so."<h2>The Nextdorians were given a more urban look</h2><div type="image" title="coming 2 america" height="2052" width="2736" msid="81578843" hostid="261"></div>In the sequel, we meet the residents from the rival city of Nextdoria, led by General Izzi (Wesley Snipes) and his children Bopoto (Teyana Taylor) and Idi (Rotimi). In one scene, Bopoto appears in a jaw-dropping Afro, which Farmer said <a href="https://www.insider.com/analysis-on-beauty-industry-natural-hair-failure-2019-10">was a purposeful contrast</a>. <div type="image" title="coming 2 america" height="2600" width="3466" msid="81578844" hostid="261"></div>"They were from a country that didn't have as much money as Zamunda, so they were more influenced by an urban culture," Farmer said. "So when you saw Teyana, she was going to have a different hair hairstyle all the time, because that's kind of what the urban women do."Farmer added that this also tied into Idi's looks, like his different color dreadlocks. <h2>The Zamundans were given a slightly updated and polished look</h2><div type="image" title="coming 2 america" height="1692" width="2256" msid="81578845" hostid="261"></div>Morris told Insider that she brought the royals into the 21st century with a few minor alterations, like making Prince Akeem's style "a little more refined" and adjusting the shape of Semmi's hairdo."And then Arsenio, from a different generation, before he had that flat top, he had more hair," the stylist said. "So it was just an updated version of that, not as square because that was kind of like the '80s and '90s. And I put a little texture into his hair and a side part to bring him up to date."<h2>General Izzi's hair was inspired by a style from Rwanda</h2><div type="image" title="coming 2 america" height="1859" width="2479" msid="81578850" hostid="261"></div>Morris said that General Izzi's unique and intricate hairdo was based on a Rwandan style called Amasunzu from the Tutsi tribe. The stylist put her own fantasy spin on the hairdo, which dates back to the 1920s and is used in the film as a portrayal of class."That style was worn by powerful leaders, nobles, people who had money, and it signified a few different things," Morris told Insider. "And I followed what Carla was doing as far as putting the jewels and different things in the hair." "... that was important because we like to adorn ourselves with jewels to enhance our <keyword id="6354629" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="beauty">beauty</keyword> and our hairstyles," she added. "And it's just a statement of pride and identifies that you had status or some type of wealth."<h2>Fowler's hair needed to be hidden at first</h2><div type="image" title="coming 2 america" height="714" width="952" msid="81578855" hostid="261"></div>Lavelle is first introduced with a high-top hairstyle, which, unbeknownst to viewers, was used to cover up his dreads. The character sported two different hairdos, one when he was in New York and the other when he stayed in Zamunda."We actually put a piece to cover his dreads so that there could be a change when he went to Zamunda," Morris said. "Carla and I had to get crafty last minute and figure out how to do that, and we decided we would cover it." <div type="image" title="coming 2 america" height="2247" width="2996" msid="81578860" hostid="261"></div>The pair <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-blow-dry-your-hair-2018-11">used a styled piece</a> for the top of the hair, and another barber, Victor Paz, designed the sides and back to match. However, Farmer said she created the braids that Mary wore in one scene. But the industry rallied by releasing no shortage of ambitious and exciting new projects, which brought their own set of breakthroughs in the world of special effects.From massive battle and fight sequences to some of the most realistic practical effects we've ever seen, here's a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the biggest films of the year. Three, two, one!To play the legendary warrior <keyword id="3026859" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mulan">Mulan</keyword> in Disney's live-action film, Liu Yifei spent three months training for up to seven hours a day. This demanding regimen paid off. The film's cinematographer, Mandy Walker, told insider that Yifei was able to execute about 90% of her own stunt work.In preparation for the film's acrobatic fight sequences, Yifei and her castmates were schooled in everything from weapons handling and archery to military marching and horseback riding. The performers did their most dramatic midair stunts while attached to wires or beams so that it looked like their characters were flying or spinning through the air.All in all, the film's action sequences required 90 horses, 80 trick riders, 4,000 prop weapons, 281 sets of armor for the Chinese army, and 730 pieces of armor for the Rouran army.How do you create a terrifying monster out of nothing? It turns out, with a lot of clever camera and stunt work. This scene from "<keyword id="920693" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="the-Invisible-Man">The Invisible Man</keyword>," where the titular villain throws Elisabeth Moss' character across the table, is actually a bunch of shots stitched together.First, the crew filmed Elisabeth as she was about to be thrown. Next, they swapped in the actor's stunt double and filmed her being thrown by another stunt performer in a green suit. Then they swapped in Elisabeth again. In postproduction, VFX artists combined the plates, then digitally erased the green-suit performer and the ropes used for the stunt.For it all to match up perfectly, the crew had to shoot the whole thing with a motion-controlled camera, which could be programmed to perform precise, repeatable camera movements.That wasn't the only bit of camera trickery in the film. On the last day of shooting, when filming this scene, the camera team had to get what they called "an impossible shot" -- one that involved passing a camera out of a moving car into another moving car, all in one smooth handoff."Extraction" marked the directorial debut of Sam Hargrave, the veteran stunt coordinator behind "Atomic Blonde" and a number of Marvel movies. Naturally, then, the Netflix thriller was full of daredevil stunt work -- just as much from the camera crew as from the actors and stunt performers.The centerpiece of the film was what the crew referred to as "the oner" -- an extended fight scene made to look like one continuous shot. Sam is familiar with big, long action sequences from working on the famous one-shot fight in "Atomic Blonde." But this one for "Extraction" required Sam to take us right into the middle of the action, even strapping himself to the hood of a chase vehicle. Just to get this one smooth shot taking us from outside to inside a car, he had to unstrap himself from that one car, run over to the other vehicle, and then repeat the same shot twice. This is what you call a stitch point, one of the invisible cuts that joined about 36 different segments into what looks like one long, seamless 12-minute take.For the third installment in the "Bill &amp; Ted" franchise, special effects legend Kevin Yagher created special bodysuits for scenes where Bill and Ted meet future versions of themselves.The process began with lifecasts of Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves' bodies, which were then used to sculpt the shape of the actors' suits, both the muscle suits they wear in the prison scene and Keanu's fat suit worn in a different scene. Kevin and his team sculpted and spray-painted tiny details like pores and veins onto the muscle suits and added bags of beads into Keanu's fat suit to get just the right jiggle in his belly.[beads shaking]The rollout of the "<keyword id="163980" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sonic">Sonic</keyword>" movie got off to a rough start when the first trailer was met with backlash from fans who objected to this Sonic's disturbingly realistic appearance. In response, the VFX artists gave the character an overhaul, making his eyes bigger, his mouth more animated, and his nose and limbs more cartoonish, more like the original design in the video games.Just about everyone liked the redesign better, including the man behind the hedgehog, actor and comedian Ben Schwartz. Ben not only lent his voice to Sonic, but also provided facial motion capture to inform the character's animation. On set, they used different stand-ins for Sonic to give costars like James Marsden something tangible to interact with, whether it was a blue stuffy or just a ball on a tripod.We saw CGI turn man into hedgehog. What about turning man into dog?In this year's remake of "The Call of the Wild," veteran motion-capture performer Terry Notary provided an incredible mo-cap performance for the movie's canine protagonist, Buck. Having Terry on set provided a raw-size reference for the other actors and gave costars someone to interact with emotionally.For Buck's design, the filmmakers used the reference of a real-life shelter dog, whose own name happens to be Buckley. To help guide the animation of the many dog and wolf characters in the film, the team brought in five other dogs for a mo-cap playtime session. But don't worry; no pups were involved in the filming of this scene, where Buck and John Thornton navigate a treacherous river.The filmmakers enlisted a stuntperson to shoot the real deal on a river in British Columbia. They then combined the on-location shots with blue-screen footage of Harrison Ford paddling on a canoe gimbal, filmed on a motion-controlled camera that allowed for some particularly cinematic, sweeping shots. Finally, VFX artists digitally added Harrison's canine friend into the mix in postproduction.The character in "Onward" that presented Pixar with the most challenges was this guy, known simply as Dad. He's introduced when Ian, voiced by Tom Holland, carries out a spell to conjure up his late father, but only half of his body appears.Pixar's animators spent a lot of time on Dad's first scene to make sure it would capture the force and unpredictability of magic. They even took turns blasting each other with a leaf blower to get a feel for what the conjuring effect should look like.From there, the challenge was giving life to a pair of pants, a task that forced Pixar to bring its cloth technology to a new level. The studio used a process called simulation to program how a character's clothing should respond to his or her movements and the different forces acting on them. And Mary Elizabeth Winstead adopted judo, jujitsu, and karate to play Huntress, the deadly-accurate assassin who's all about precision.Early on in Netflix's "Project Power," there's an unforgettable scene where Machine Gun Kelly's character spontaneously bursts into flames. To figure out how to turn MGK into a human fireball, the effects team first set stuntpeople on fire in a series of camera tests.Then they came up with a breakthrough: an LED suit that would be embedded within layers of burn prosthetics. The LEDs were programmed to illuminate the actor as his character is seen exploding in flames. The gruesome prosthetics helped hide the LED strips, along with all the wires and battery packs.For MGK, this meant spending five hours in the makeup chair every day of shooting to get hundreds of prosthetic pieces glued on over 95% of his body. To make the head-to-head between these two characters feel as messy as possible, the crew designed a special set that was made to be destroyed.The set included foam floors, a chimney rigged with squibs, and a bunch of household-item breakaway props that were built to be broken, just like this glass window, which shatters in this scene.
