While the rate of growth has slowed, industry experts and executives have said they expect some EV share to grow to 8% in 2024 as new models continue to hit the market, helping to keep their <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-electric-car-deals-leases-kia-hyundai-tesla-ford-2024-6" target="_blank">average price falling.</a> While there are plenty of shoppers interested in an electric vehicle, the options on sale today are often too big, too expensive, or not practical enough to replace a gas-powered car. Car companies are already <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/automakers-back-to-the-drawing-board-ev-plans-2024-2">scrambling to adjust</a> to a sudden change in the electric vehicle market in order to draw more new customers. The slowdown in electric vehicle sales growth has rocked everyone from Ford to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-sales-miss-ev-slowdown-new-wave-customers-2024-4">Tesla</a>, denting sales and forcing executives to rethink their long-term plans for electric vehicles. While the industry has made great strides in electric vehicle range and battery charging times, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-charging-needs-to-improve-amenities-offerings-stores-2024-6">huge holes in the infrastructure</a> make certain areas nearly impossible to navigate without a gas-powered engine. Addressing charging infrastructure is already high on the industry's list of priorities when it comes to removing barriers to adoption, but the fact that it might also drive existing EV owners away only amplifies the issue. EV charging is so bleak that some owners are considering going back to gas-powered cars, survey finds

But that sales growth has hit a plateau after years of exponential growth. Industry executives and analysts this year are estimating a more modest increase by the end of 2024, with EVs expected to account for between 8% and 10% of sales this year.<h2 id="5e995481-cafc-4a05-bbdd-943490394d6e">EV charging has improved, but there is still a long way to go</h2>Both the automotive industry and the US government have rallied around this issue, and at the start of this year the number of public charging stations in the US had doubled from 2020, according to Pew Research and the Department of Energy.In addition to this improvement in infrastructure, several EVs have been engineered to drive about as far as a gas car on a single charge, and batteries today are built to charge faster.But it's still not enough. The network of 61,000 public charging stations in the US pales in comparison to the roughly 120,000 gas stations nationwide. And just because a charger exists doesn't mean it's in the right place or compatible with the EV you're driving.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.jdpower.com/business/press-releases/2024-us-electric-vehicle-experience-evx-public-charging-study">JD Power</a>'s annual study of EV public charging experiences released in August found that 19% of respondents visited a charger but were not actually able to charge their vehicle. A majority of these failed charging visits were due to lack of availability or the charger being broken, JD Power found.Affordability is also a key issue for today's electric car shoppers, an issue the industry has tried to address with lower sticker prices. The average price paid for an EV has fallen steadily for the past year, and some of the best <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-pile-up-dealer-lots-deals-discounts-leasing-2024-8">leasing deals</a> are reserved for electric cars right now.But EV shoppers have found a new cost to angst over.EY also found improvements in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meet-dozens-of-startups-leading-the-electric-car-charging-market-2022-2">charging and range attitudes</a> were dampened by an increase in worry about battery life and maintenance fees, with 27% of US respondents reporting concerns about expensive batteries.<h2 id="4c339c1e-7bfe-4082-9692-fca09b6cc911">EVs are still a tough sell for the average buyer</h2>US consumers are still quite skeptical about making the jump to a fully electric car, with 21% of respondents in EY's study saying they prefer a gradual transition from gas-powered cars to battery-powered cars.That's stoking demand for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/car-buyer-interest-hybrids-as-electric-vehicle-adoption-slowing-2023-10">hybrid vehicles</a>, which come in plug-in varieties or with gas-electric engines that don't need to recharge at all, due to the higher mileage per gallon and less of a lifestyle switch."With many still hesitant to go all in with EVs, hybrids offer an 'easier-to-swallow' solution," EY Americas Aerospace, Defense and Mobility Leader Raman Ram said in the report. "For those who are looking to transition due to the environment, hybrids allow owners to lessen their reliance on fuel and creates options for batteries and parts. For many, it's a win-win."It's not quite that simple, though. Hybrids are hard to find right now as automakers rush back to the once-withering segment. The current mismatch between supply and demand for these vehicles makes shopping for them stressful and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/plug-in-hybrid-prices-soaring-demand-electric-cars-2024-9">prices hard to swallow</a>.

Drivers are feeling better about EV range and charging infrastructure, but still aren't ready to go electric

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Automakers and their suppliers have invested hundreds of billions of dollars in EVs.</li><li>Demand for EVs has slowed over the past year while consumer interest in hybrids has soared.</li></ul>In recent years, global automakers and their suppliers have invested hundreds of billions of dollars in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chevrolet-new-electric-models-equinox-silverado-ev-not-enough-2024-6">developing new electric vehicles</a> and the infrastructure to build and support them.However, even as the automotive industry marches toward the inevitable point of full electrification,<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-vehicle-misconceptions-about-the-ev-transition-market-sales-2024-5"> demand for EVs has slowed </a>over the past year while <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-challenges-amid-hybrid-craze-ford-gm-gas-profits-2024-4">interest in hybrids has soared.</a>Hybrids, with their excellent efficiency and lower cost, offer consumers a range-anxiety-free alternative to help bridge the gap between internal combustion and EVs, Steve Kosowski, the manager for Long Range Planning and Strategy at Kia Motors America, told Business Insider in a recent interview.While EV sales <a target="_blank" href="https://www.coxautoinc.com/market-insights/q1-2024-ev-sales/#:~:text=In%20the%20first%20quarter%20of,growth%20rate%20has%20slowed%20notably.">fell in the first quarter</a> of 2024 by more than 15% compared to the previous three months — their first drop since 2020 — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.strategyand.pwc.com/de/en/industries/automotive/electric-vehicle-sales-review-2024-q1.html">hybrid sales are booming. </a>Traditional hybrids, with lower price points and limited all-electric range, saw a 45.7% sales uptick from January to March, while plug-ins, which are pricier but can go upwards of 60 miles on batteries, grew a whopping 69.7%, according to figures from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.strategyand.pwc.com/de/en/industries/automotive/electric-vehicle-sales-review-2024-q1.html">PWC</a>.<div type="image" title="A Kia EV3 GT-Line compact electric SUV is parked in front of a building." height="3227" width="5736" msid="110920053" hostid="261" sizebytes="1753006"></div>As a result, some automakers have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mercedes-benz-ev-2030-electric-car-market-trends-2024-2">postponed their plans</a> to abandon internal combustion engines completely.This development would seemingly threaten Kia, which has launched about half a dozen new BEVs in recent years, including the stylish <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kia-ev3-details-range-photos-interior-2024-5">EV3 SUV this May</a>.But Kia sees hybrids as an opportunity to get potential BEV buyers in the door."If you look at resistance in the market to buying an EV, number one is price and then it's<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-vehicle-range-ev-charging-station-infrastructure-issues-2024-5"> range and (charging) infrastructure</a>, " Kosowski said. "But if you look at hybrids and PHEVs, the resistance because of price is much much lower.""The last time I looked, transaction prices for EVs and plug-in hybrids were in the same area, which signals to me that consumers want to electrify and are willing to pay for it," he added."With range anxiety a non-issue, hybrids, especially those of the plug-in variety, allow people who are hesitant to fully electrify a way to ease into it.<div type="image" title="A blue 2024 Kia Niro PHEV drives down the road" height="4128" width="6192" msid="110920055" hostid="261" sizebytes="498922"></div>Hybrids accounted for about 8.4% of the total market during the first quarter of 2024.But if you look at the largest and arguably most important segment these days, compact SUVs, hybrids account for nearly one-fifth of sales, Kosowski said.This places added importance on the need to have hybrid options available for sale.Fortunately for Kia, the company hedged its strategy and has no fewer than half a dozen hybrids and PHEVs currently on sale in the US, including the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kia-niro-hybrid-is-a-great-car-to-buy-2017-11">Niro Hybrid</a> and Sportage PHEV compact SUVs."As an automaker, you take a step back from this, and you go, it makes so much more sense to proliferate hybrids within your lineup," he said.For Kia, building hybrids instead of EVs affects its bottom line beyond the revenue it generates. The cost of materials to build an EV is 50% more than that."This is the 800-pound gorilla in the room for the industry," he added. "The thing about EVs is their material cost is so high that the margin for everybody gets squeezed until it becomes negative."The popularity is a surprising turn of events from hybrids. Until recentlythey were maligned by consumers for being substantially more expensive and complex than a fully ICE vehicle and by environmentalists for not being as eco-friendly as a full BEV.However, hybrids' day in the sun is likely to be temporary due to increasingly<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/insider-energy-bidens-secret-weapon-3-big-clean-tech-deals-2020-11"> stringent environmental regulations.</a>"EV sales can only go up. These cars are coming because every automaker has to sell in order to meet <a target="_blank" href="https://afdc.energy.gov/laws/4249">zero-emissions vehicle production (ZEV) regulations</a>, and greenhouse has rules," Kosowski said.

Kia says hybrids aren't a threat to EVs but are the perfect gateway to electrification

And that's exactly where the Japanese car makers are suffering the most," said Munoz, pointing to the rapid expansion of the likes of BYD in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chinese-ev-companies-shut-out-of-us-target-mexico-brazil-2024-6">Southeast Asia and Latin America</a>."Japanese carmakers have a strong presence in Southeast Asia. And Southeast Asia right now is a hot market for Chinese cars," he said.<h2 id="063c7ce4-3202-4df2-8359-3a26c5e32696">Electric woes</h2>Japanese automakers have taken a broadly cautious approach to the transition to EVs, focusing instead on hybrid vehicles.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/toyota-hybrid-cars-ev-sales-growth-prius-bz4x-2024-2">That approach has mostly paid off</a> as EV demand has slowed, with Toyota reporting bumper profits on the back of strong hybrid sales in the US earlier this year.<div type="image" title="A Toyota Prius" height="1500" width="2000" msid="115219890" hostid="261" sizebytes="88360"></div>However, Munoz said that while the hybrids-first strategy may have worked out in the US and Europe, it has created problems for Japanese automakers in China, leaving them without a strong lineup of EVs that can compete with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/byd-cheap-ev-seagull-coming-to-europe-china-us-tariffs-2024-5">local offerings that can cost less than $10,000</a>."China is definitely shifting to fully electric. And this leaves out all of the car makers that are not competitive with their electric cars," said Munoz.He added that Toyota, Honda, and Nissan are at risk of becoming overly dependent on US and European markets, which are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-sales-europe-slumping-warning-sign-us-2024-9">experiencing stagnating growth</a> while losing out in expanding markets like China."At the end of the day, the hybrid strategy worked in Japan, worked in the US, and worked very well in Europe, but that's not the case in China," he added.There are signs that Japan's auto giants are changing their strategies.Nissan has pledged to accelerate the introduction of new EVs in China and hybrids in the US, while Toyota is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/toyota-aims-ramp-up-china-production-strategy-pivot-sources-say-2024-11-09/">reportedly planning to expand production</a> in China as it attempts to take on local firms.A Nissan spokesperson told BI that the company is taking measures to meet the market's and customers' needs, including introducing new products.They added that the US remains a priority market for Nissan, and that the company was expecting an increase in sales from new models.Shares of the carmaker jumped on Tuesday after it was revealed that activist investor Effissimo Capital Management took a 2.5% stake in the company.Japanese automakers will likely face new challenges in the coming years, especially in the wake of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-tariffs-threaten-elon-musk-tesla-mexico-factory-limbo-2024-11">Donald Trump winning the US presidential election</a> this month.Speaking on an earnings call on Wednesday, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trumps-tariffs-threats-world-ceos-thoughts-trade-2024-11">Honda executive vice president Shinji Aoyama warned</a> that Trump's proposed tariffs on vehicles imported from Mexico could have a huge impact on Japanese automakers, many of whom have factories in the country.Honda did not respond to a request for comment, sent outside normal working hours.

Japanese carmakers are losing ground as China surges ahead in the EV race

The company, which unveiled the ID.4, expects the Indian passenger vehicles market to grow 5-7 per cent this year while it is targeting 10-15 per cent growth for itself. "Our first step to the electrification journey in India begins with the ID.4...," Executive Director Sales International Operations, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Michael Mayer said here at the Volkswagen annual brand conference. He said the ID.4 is being brought in as part of the company's global efforts of mass electrification. It will be launched in the Indian market later this year. Globally, VW is leading in the electrification journey, he said, adding, as part of the company's commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement 2030, it is continuing efforts in various spheres, including the development of charging infrastructure that's key to acceptance of EVs, recycling of batteries, digitalisation and connectivity solutions. The company is offering different products from ID.2 to ID.Buzz globally targeting several segments of customers, Mayer said, adding that globally, VW's electric vehicle (EV) sales grew 21 per cent at around 4 lakh units in 2023. "This is not the end of the story. It is our goal to take this success to other markets," Mayer said. However, he added, "This would be a phased approach, wherein we will strengthen our current portfolio on the basis of brand positioning for the market." The Indian automotive industry is now ranked third in the world even surpassing Japan, Mayer said, adding, "Who would have thought it ten years back?" He said VW is committed to the Indian market and the company will continue to introduce its premium products over the next few years. Volkswagen Passenger Cars India Brand Director Ashish Gupta said the company's sales grew 8 per cent in 2023. The company had sold around 44,000 units. "Our target this year in 2024 is to increase it by 10-15 per cent," he added. The company will continue to expand its sales and service network to tap opportunities coming from Tier II and Tier III cities. He said the company is targeting to have a presence in 170 cities with 230 sales and pre-owned car touch points along with 150 service centres in 2024. Last year, it had set up 45 sales and service touch points, he said, adding that at present, the company has 193 sales and pre-owned car sales touch points and 145 service centres in 145 cities.
