New Delhi: The adoption of <keyword id="20643295" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Electric-two-wheeler" source="keywords">electric two-wheeler</keyword> vehicles in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> is on a gradual rise and it is expected that their share will rise to upwards of 13 per cent by 2026-27, investment banking company <keyword id="19905137" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jefferies" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Jefferies" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Jefferies">Jefferies</keyword> asserted in a report. In the financial year that ended in March 2024, the share of electric two-wheelers was at 5 per cent. Share of EVs in two-wheeler sales rose from just 0.4 per cent in 2020-21 to 5.4 per cent by early 2023, led by rising subsidies and new launches. However, Jefferies claimed that a subsequent reduction in incentives has resulted in the share remaining in the 4-7 per cent range for most of the past 24 months, despite the introduction of lower-priced vehicles by manufacturers. "We currently assume share of E2Ws rising from 5 per cent (0.9mn units) in FY24 to 7 per cent/10 per cent/13 per cent (1.4mn/2.3mn/3.4mn units) in FY25E/FY26E/FY27E, although we now see a downside risk to these estimates in the context of the new scheme targeting just 2.5mn E2Ws over two years," Jefferies said in its report released earlier this week. <keyword id="19897349" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola-Electric" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Ola Electric" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Ola Electric">Ola Electric</keyword>, which has recently become a publicly listed company, has emerged as the dominant manufacturer in India's electric two-wheelers market, said Jefferies, noting that its market share rose from 21 per cent in 2022-23 to 35 per cent in 2023-24 and further to 49 per cent in 1Q-2024-25. However, as per the Jefferies report, Ola's market share has subsequently fallen to 31 per cent in August and just 29 per cent in September (month-to-date). Bajaj, TVS and Ather, on the other hand, have gained 5-9 percentage points each since June quarter, it said. This week, the Union Cabinet has approved a scheme for the promotion of electric mobility in the country. The scheme has an outlay of Rs 10,900 crore over two years. The Cabinet's approval for the 'PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme' was based on a proposal from the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI). Among others, subsidies or demand incentives worth Rs 3,679 crore would be provided to incentivise e-2Ws, e-3Ws, e-ambulances, e-trucks and other emerging EVs. The scheme will support 24.79 lakh e-2Ws, 3.16 lakh e-3Ws, and 14,028 e-buses, a release said. The Ministry of Heavy Industries is also introducing e-vouchers for EV buyers to avail of demand incentives under the scheme.

Lava Agni 3 5G with dual display launched in India starting at ₹20,999

German automaker <keyword id="6361865" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Volkswagen" source="Orion">Volkswagen</keyword> will kick off its electrification journey in India with the launch of its electric car ID.4 later this year as part of its global efforts of mass electrification, a senior company official said on Thursday. The company, which unveiled the ID.4, expects the Indian passenger vehicles market to grow 5-7 per cent this year while it is targeting 10-15 per cent growth for itself. "Our first step to the electrification journey in India begins with the ID.4...," Executive Director Sales International Operations, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Michael Mayer said here at the Volkswagen annual brand conference. He said the ID.4 is being brought in as part of the company's global efforts of mass electrification. It will be launched in the Indian market later this year. Globally, VW is leading in the electrification journey, he said, adding, as part of the company's commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement 2030, it is continuing efforts in various spheres, including the development of charging infrastructure that's key to acceptance of EVs, recycling of batteries, digitalisation and connectivity solutions. The company is offering different products from ID.2 to ID.Buzz globally targeting several segments of customers, Mayer said, adding that globally, VW's electric vehicle (EV) sales grew 21 per cent at around 4 lakh units in 2023. "This is not the end of the story. It is our goal to take this success to other markets," Mayer said. However, he added, "This would be a phased approach, wherein we will strengthen our current portfolio on the basis of brand positioning for the market." "India, needless to say, continues to be a key market for Volkswagen. India is a 4 million car market now and is expected to grow 5-7 per cent this year," he asserted. The Indian automotive industry is now ranked third in the world even surpassing Japan, Mayer said, adding, "Who would have thought it ten years back?" He said VW is committed to the Indian market and the company will continue to introduce its premium products over the next few years. Volkswagen Passenger Cars India Brand Director Ashish Gupta said the company's sales grew 8 per cent in 2023. The company had sold around 44,000 units. "Our target this year in 2024 is to increase it by 10-15 per cent," he added. The company will continue to expand its sales and service network to tap opportunities coming from Tier II and Tier III cities. He said the company is targeting to have a presence in 170 cities with 230 sales and pre-owned car touch points along with 150 service centres in 2024. Last year, it had set up 45 sales and service touch points, he said, adding that at present, the company has 193 sales and pre-owned car sales touch points and 145 service centres in 145 cities. New Delhi, Automaker Kia India on Thursday said it will increase prices of Seltos and Carens by up to 2 per cent from October 1, according to a senior company official. However, the company will not hike the prices of its entry-level model Sonet. "We are looking to take about a 2 per cent price increase on Seltos and Carens from October 1," Kia India National Head (Sales and Marketing) Hardeep S Brar told PTI. The company had last hiked prices in April this year as it upgraded its portfolio to conform to Real Driving Emission (RDE) norms, he said. "While many of the companies have already taken the price increase post-April, we, however, did not take...besides the raw material prices are going up.. and we introduced the new Seltos and a lot of investment has gone into the product..so we think it is time that we take the price increase," Brar said. Kia India also sells an electric model EV6 in the country.

The Mumbai-based auto major on Monday launched a midsize SUV coupe <keyword id="20400827" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Curvv" source="keywords">Curvv</keyword> with petrol and diesel powertrains with a price starting at Rs 9.99 lakh. The company has already unveiled the electric version of the model in August. The model would be competing with the likes of <keyword id="2883300" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai-Creta" source="Orion">Hyundai Creta</keyword>, <keyword id="7720018" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kia-Seltos" source="Orion">Kia Seltos</keyword>, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, and Honda Elevate, among others. "Curvv is being positioned in the fast-growing, mid-size SUV segment, which is roughly 16% of the whole industry (passenger vehicle) size. If translated into numbers, it would be like 7 lakh units a year," Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle MD Shailesh Chandra told PTI in an interaction. The segment is very competitive with various brands having a product already in the market, he noted. Therefore, if one enters this segment so late, then it will have to think of coming up with a slightly differentiated approach, Chandra said. "And that was the thinking behind Curvv, which comes with an SUV coupe body style. We saw that this was gaining popularity globally, especially in the premium or luxury segment," he added. Further, he said: "So we thought, why don't we bring this into the crowded segment as a fresh, refreshing kind of a body style." When asked about sales expectations from the model, Chandra said: "We have come with this model, with the best in class features. It's a differentiated product in this and therefore we think it is going to perform well." He noted that Tata Motors currently has a market share of around 19% in the SUV segment and expects the new model to help it grow further. "We'll gain from where we are. The market leader in SUVs would be, say, 21-22 %, so it's a crowded segment. It's not that one player is holding the roost here. "All the top 3-4 players in SUVs are around the same market share figure," Chandra said. He noted that the company is also looking to enhance its dealer network by around 10-15 % in the next one year. "We have a very aggressive plan of expanding dealerships. We will need to have an enhanced network. We will have to make them bigger, also in size. And therefore, for EVs, we have started separation of the outlets. So there will be expansion in touchpoints, not only on the sales side, but big time on the service side as well," Chandra said. <keyword id="20400828" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-curvv" source="keywords">Tata Curvv</keyword> comes with two petrol and a diesel engine option. "The introduction of the Curvv further enhances our SUV portfolio as a comprehensive mid-SUV product with multiple powertrains, several first-in-segment features, a brand new capable architecture - ATLAS and Level 2 ADAS," Chandra said. Besides Curvv, Tata Motors sells models like Punch, Nexon, Harrier and Safari in the domestic market.

Hyundai Motor said it will also receive dividends from its Indian operations, reports Yonhap news agency. "The dividends from their overseas operations will help the three companies cut back on bank loans, which will enhance their financial status and will allow them to make an aggressive investment (in EV plants)," the statement said. The group's overseas operations, including Hyundai Motor America, Hyundai Motor India, <keyword id="17681423" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hyundai-motor-manufacturing-czech" source="Orion">Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Czech</keyword>, Kia America, Kia Europe and Kia Slovakia SRO, posted improved earnings results in the 2021-2022 period despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Hyundai Motor plans to complete a 150,000-unit-a-year EV plant in its main Ulsan plant, 299 kilometers southeast of Seoul, by 2025. In April, Kia began the construction of a 150,000-unit-a-year EV plant inside its existing factory in Hwaseong, just south of Seoul, with a goal to start production in late 2025. In the same month, the Korean automotive group announced it will invest 24 trillion won in its domestic EV plants and other EV projects by 2030. The three affiliates will collectively make the investment to help the group become the world's No. 3 EV maker in terms of sales by 2030. The companies plan to spend most of the planned investments in expanding their existing EV production lines, developing future mobility parts and technologies, establishing EV infrastructure and exploring new EV business opportunities. Hyundai Motor and Kia plan to release a total of 31 battery-powered EV models by 2030, including the Kia EV9 this month and the Hyundai IONIQ 7 next year. Hyundai Motor and Kia have set a combined sales goal of 7.52 million units this year, up 9.8 percent from the 6.85 million units they sold last year. The two together form the world's third-largest carmaker by sales after Toyota Motor Corp. and Volkswagen Group. On top of the domestic EV plants, the group is building a 300,000-unit-a-year EV and battery plant in the U.S. state of Georgia, with a goal to start production in the first half of 2025.
