Pakistani actor <keyword id="2358880" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Fawad-Khan">Fawad Khan</keyword>, who rose to fame in India with his serial Zindagi Gulzar Hai, would now be seen in director Reema Kagti’s next venture-- <keyword id="2557480" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mr-Chaalu">Mr Chaalu</keyword>. 
 
Khan, who was last seen in Shashanka Ghosh’s <keyword id="1089498" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Khoobsurat">Khoobsurat</keyword> opposite Sonam Kapoor, has also been signed for Karan Johar’s Kapoor and Sons and Shashanka Ghosh’s <keyword id="1623649" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Battle-for-Bittora">Battle for Bittora</keyword>. 
 
While Kapoor and Sons would feature Fawad Khan, Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt in a supposed love triangle, in Battle for Bittora Fawad would play the royal prince from Anuja Chauhan’s bestselling novel of the same name. 
 In Mr Chaalu, Fawad would be seen opposite Priyanka Chopra. Earlier, actor Saif Ali Khan and Kangana Ranaut were the original choices for the film. However, things didn’t work out for these two, owing to which Fawad Khan and Priyanka Chopra were approached later. The movie would be produced by under <keyword id="5015" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Farhan-Akhtar">Farhan Akhtar</keyword> and Ritesh Sidhwani’s banner Excel Entertainment.

Fawad Khan, Bollywood’s new Mr Chaalu

This Friday, it was the clash of two biggies at the <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword>: <keyword id="1904667" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Daawat-E-Ishq">Daawat-E-Ishq</keyword> and <keyword id="1089498" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Khoobsurat">Khoobsurat</keyword>. 
 
Directed by Habib Faisal of Ishaqzaade and Do Dooni Chaar fame, Daawat-E-Ishq has <keyword id="467200" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aditya-Roy-Kapoor">Aditya Roy Kapoor</keyword> and <keyword id="562349" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Parineeti-Chopra">Parineeti Chopra</keyword> in the lead. Though they’ve been paired together for the first time, but the pairing looks fresh and cute on screen. The movie was expected to woo the audience and get off to a decent start, but it started on a slow note. According to <a href="http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/box-office/special-features/id/389">Bollywood Hungama</a>, this movie managed to collect only Rs 3.72 crore on its first Friday. The business improved a little on Saturday and Sunday; the movie collected Rs 13.6 crore over the weekend (collecting Rs 4.35 crore on Saturday and Rs 5.53 crore on Sunday). The movie also managed to gather about Rs 5.54 crore from overseas markets, which took the total weekend collections to Rs 19.14 crore. 
 
Khoobsurat on the other hand is loosely based on the old classic, Rekha starrer movie with the same name. With this movie, Pakistani actor <keyword id="2358880" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fawad-Khan">Fawad Khan</keyword> has made his <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> debut opposite <keyword id="710" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sonam-Kapoor">Sonam Kapoor</keyword>. This new Khan already had some fans before the movie hit the cinema—all thanks to his Television serial and telefilm that were aired recently on Zindagi channel. Khoobsurat is made on an estimated budget of Rs 30 crore and is the first Bollywood movie to be released under the Disney brand name. Like Daawat-E-Ishq, this movie also had a slow start. It managed to collect Rs 3.72 crore on its first day says <a href="http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/box-office/special-features/id/388">Bollywood Hungama</a>. On Saturday and Sunday Khoobsurat managed to register collections worth Rs 3.74 and Rs 5.05 crore respectively. International collections helped the movie to reach Rs 18.43 crore on its first weekend. 
 
In the meantime, last week’s release Finding Fanny staring Deepika Padukone has collected a total of Rs 31.14 crore in the last 10 days. Priyanka Chopra’s biopic Mary Kom is still going strong and has collected Rs 56.5 crore so far. (Figures till Sunday, September 21) 
 
Considering that no other big movie is getting released next week, both Daawat-E-Ishq and Khoobsurat have a fair chance of redeeming themselves—but it seems very bleak at the moment. We are anxiously waiting for October 2, 2014, when Hrithik Roshan’s Bang Bang will take on Shahid Kapoor’s Haider. Both movies seem to offer something fresh and considering that they are releasing on a long weekend, they are expected to have a great opening at the box office.

Box Office: Khoobsurat & Daawat-E-Ishq Get Luke Warm Response

On September 19, two power packed movies will be clashing at the box office. On one hand, there is a <keyword id="1904667" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Daawat-E-Ishq">Daawat-E-Ishq</keyword> starring <keyword id="562349" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Parineeti-Chopra">Parineeti Chopra</keyword> and Aditya Roy Kapoor, while on the other hand, it is <keyword id="1089498" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Khoobsurat">Khoobsurat</keyword>, a remake of 1980s Rekha starrer super-hit movie of the same name. 
 
Khoobsurat is a rom-com that looks to be different from the original movie. It’s also the debut movie for Fawad Khan, a popular Pakistani actor. The new Khan on the block has become the talk of the town because of his good looks and deep husky voice. 
 This movie is produced by Rhea Kapoor, Anil Kapoor and <keyword id="105230" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Siddharth-Roy-Kapur">Siddharth Roy Kapur</keyword>. As it is the first <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> film to be released under the Disney brand name, so people have high expectations from Khoobsurat, however the buzz for the flick is not too strong. 
 
We are expecting a 20-30% occupancy for Khoobsurat and there might be a chance of the movie picking up over the weekend due to positive word of mouth. 
 
Coming over to Daawat-E-Ishq, the pairing of the movie looks interesting. Both Parineeti and Aditya have had a good track record on the box office. Aditya Roy Kapoor was last seen in Aashiqui 2 and Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, and both the movies got stupendous response on the box office. The same is also true for Parineeti, whose last two movies were Shuddh Desi Romance and Hasee Toh Phasee. However, things are not looking too bright for this movie either. We are hoping for a 30% occupancy for this movie, too. 
 
Amongst Daawat-E-Ishq and Khoobsurat, the former seems to have a better chance but we sure hope that both the movies manage to do a good business in the coming weeks.

Box Office Predictions for Khoobsurat and Daawat-E-Ishq

Just when you thought nothing good can happen this weekend because you can’t find an ATM full of cash due to scrapping of old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes, contemporary British rock band <keyword id="34647" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Coldplay">Coldplay</keyword> along with music maestro AR <keyword id="11852" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rahman">Rahman</keyword> created a history last evening by singing Vande Mataram together. 
 <keyword id="3650408" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Global-citizen-india">Global Citizen India</keyword> initiative 2016 that took place at MMRDA grounds in Mumbai witnessed thousands flocking together to hear Coldplay sing their popular songs including 'Paradise', 'Viva La Vida', 'Yellow' and 'Fix You'. Many among the audience kept requesting for ‘Hymns of Weekend’, the song that has been shot in India by Coldplay along with <keyword id="710" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sonam-Kapoor">Sonam Kapoor</keyword>. 
 Introduced on stage by Shah Rukh Khan, <keyword id="6354267" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sachin-Tendulkar">Sachin Tendulkar</keyword> and actress <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Forget-your-boring-8-5-hours-at-office-daily-thesecountries-have-4-hours-of-office-daily/articleshow/55513369.cms">Frieda Pint</a>o, Coldplay’s front man <keyword id="6428354" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chris-Martin">Chris Martin</keyword> welcomed the crowd saying, "Namaste friends, yeh hamari khushkismati hai ki itne khoobsurat desh mein aaye hain. (We are fortunate that we have come to such beautiful country)." 
 
Midway through the event, Chris Martin invited AR Rahman and sang 'Maa tujhe salaam...Vande maatram'. 
 
Martin also had the Indian national flag on his console and a small <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Forget-your-boring-8-5-hours-at-office-daily-thesecountries-have-4-hours-of-office-daily/articleshow/55513369.cms">tricolour </a>stuck in his back pocket, which he removed later.

But all said and done, it would be a colossal mistake to not acknowledge that over the years, our closest neighbour/blame-game player has been a source of great help and never-ending guffaws.

1. World-class cricket rivalry: Without Pakistan, would the world cup or cricket matches ever be the same? I shudder to think of the boring matches’ women who can’t differentiate a ‘wide’ from a ‘no-ball’ would have to endure. An India- Pakistan match has the power to unite families and induce patriotism like nothing else. Moreover, the rivalry between both these cricket teams put the rivalry between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic to shame. Winning a match against Pakistan is of greater significance than discovering the cure for a deadly disease or just about anything else. That’s right. And, let’s not to forget, the easy retweets that can be garnered by cracking Shahid Afridi and Inzamam-ul-Haq jokes. We might not like to admit it, but Indians need you, Pakistan. 
 
2. Fawad Khan: Fawad Afzal Khan, better known as the only reason women all across India endured Khoobsurat, a two-hour long snoozefest masquerading as a movie. I’m not exaggerating when I say that Fawad Khan is Pakistan’s national treasure. His chiseled face, perfectly sculpted body has us swooning and watching Khoobsurat on repeat, at the cost of damaging our brain. Don’t think it’s possible to thank you enough for his existence, Pakistan. 
 
3. Pakistan army gives the Indian army a much needed practice: When our neighbour is in one of their no-so-friendly moods, it results in a couple of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Pakistan-resorts-to-ceasefire-violation-shell-mortar-bombs-in-Poonch/articleshow/48449239.cms">infiltration bids</a> and the sacred LoC being violated. As a result, the Pakistan army unknowingly motivates the Indian army to stay on their feet by providing much-needed net practice. Additionally, it also keeps them prepared for any plausible serious confrontations with other nuclear states. (China, we’re looking at you) 
 
4. Helping Bollywood directors with movie plots: Bollywood Directors just like Bollywood lyricists would have been ‘inspired’ by works of others while figuring out plots for movies had it not been for the partition and the subsequent creation of Pakistan. If you’re one of those who loves Gadar, 1947, A Love Story, Veer Zara and the recent <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Bajrangi-Bhaijaan-the-highest-grosser-of-2015/articleshow/48145585.cms">Bajrangi Bhaijaan</a>, you have to no one to thank, but thy neighbor. Thank you Pakistan for providing our directors with the perfect storylines for <keyword id="28240" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Independence-day">Independence Day</keyword> special films since 1947. 
 
5. Chand Nawab: Nawazuddin Siddiqui might have kept us laughing with his antics as Chand Nawab in Bajrangi Bhaijaan, but he undoubtedly failed at overshadowing the original Chand Nawab on whom the character was based. Chand Nawab, a Pakistani journalist with Indus News had to face many hurdles while recording his PTC in a crowded railway station. The video of his attempts to get his PTC right while having to dodge people who would walk in front of the camera went viral and made us fall in love with this man, who has become our new favourite. All due to Pakistan, guys! 
 
Special mention- If there’s one thing that India has gotten horribly wrong while Pakistan has hit the bull’s eye, it is Coke Studio. With their version, Pakistan showed us what a music programme should ideally be about.

When general people have a day off from hectic schedules, they like to sleep around or catch a good movie, but <keyword id="1671" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shah-Rukh-Khan">Shah Rukh Khan</keyword>, being the insomniac actor that he is, chose to spend his holiday in a different manner altogether. Khan, who is the global face of Indian cinema and one of India’s most successful actors, is in Bulgaria these days, shooting for Rohit Shetty’s upcoming movie Dilwale, with Kajol, Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon. 
 
On his day off, what the actor decided to do was to tease us all with a little peek-a-boo into his next movie <keyword id="6361860" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Raees">Raees</keyword>. This has to be the most casual teaser launch of any big-budget movie ever.

In the teaser of Raees, we get to enjoy the bad-boy look of Shah Rukh Khan, who once was christened as the ‘King of Romance’. 
 
 
 Shah Rukh stars as Raees, a bootlegger who believes that no work is small and also that work is worship. Contrary to popular beliefs and some fan-made posters that one can find on various websites, the movie does not star <keyword id="5015" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Farhan-Akhtar">Farhan Akhtar</keyword>. Instead, he serves as the producer of the movie, along with Ritesh Sidhwani and Gauri Khan. The movie would release on Eid, the same day Salman Khan’s Sultan would be releasing. Raees teaser: How Shah Rukh Khan loves to ‘tease’ his fans

Five star kids who've said no to acting in Bollywood movies

Come Friday and we would see Emraan Hashmi don a role of a conman in the movie titled Raja Natwarlal. Along with Hashmi, the movie also stars Pakistani model and actor Humaima Malick. 
 
The movie is directed by Kunal Deshmukh who has worked with Emraan Hashmi in the Jannat series. Paresh Rawal, Kay Kay Menon and Deepak Tijori are also a part of this flick. 
 
Raja Natwarlal is a crime comedy movie, which is produced by produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur under UTV Motion Pictures. 
 
“Raja Natwarlal appears to be a well made film too which is substantiated by content in the offering. That should ensure that after a decent start of 40%-50% (with single screens taking the lead),” Joginder Tuteja said on Koimoi.com. 
 
Girish Johar, a film business expert, while talking to Business Insider India shared, “Raja Natwarlal will have a good start at the box office as Emraan Hashmi’s movie is releasing after a while and fans are keen to see him on 70mm.” 
 
Emraan Hashmi was last seen in Raj Kumar Gupta’s Ghanchakkar and Ek Thi Daayan. 
 
Coming back to Raja Natwarlal, we expect the movie to get off to a decent start and be able to pull up at least Rs 20 crore in the opening weekend. 
 
The last week’s offering Mardaani despite having rave reviews was unable to pull any crowds, as a result of which Singham Returns continued to have a good run at the box office. We are quite bullish about the next week’s offering Mary Kom and later offering such as Finding Fanny, Khoobsurat, Daawat-e-Ishq, Haider and Bang Bang!

Box Office Predictions For Raja Natwarlal

In the last few years, we have had a lot of movies that have tried to offer something new to the audience. In fact, last week itself, we saw the release of a biopic staring <keyword id="1655" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Priyanka-Chopra">Priyanka Chopra</keyword>, which has been much appreciated. 
 This week it was the turn of Deepika Padukone starrer English language quirky drama to try its luck at Box Office. The movie has managed to create a place for itself amongst the niche audience but did not create a stir amongst the masses. As per Girish Johar, Film Business Expert “In the first opening weekend, <keyword id="1667771" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Finding-Fanny">Finding Fanny</keyword> has collected Rs 16.75 crore (both versions) approximately at the Indian box office”. 
 
Apart from Deepika Padukone, there were also other big names such as Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur and Dimple Kapadia. 
 This week, Vikram Bhatt’s movie <keyword id="1700318" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Creature-3D">Creature 3D</keyword>, too, was released. The movie stars Bipasha Basu along with Pakistani actor Imran Abbas Naqvi. This is Naqvi’s first movie in Bollywood. As per Johar, Creature 3D managed to rake in Rs 10.5 crores approximately in its first weekend at the BO. 
 On the other hand, <keyword id="47387" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mary-Kom">Mary Kom</keyword> continues to grow strong. The movie has so far managed to gather Rs 46 Crores at the box office. Considering that neither Finding Fanny nor Creature 3D managed to excite the Indian viewers, there is a good possibility that Mary Kom will continue to hold its ground in this week too. 
 While Bollywood movies did not manage to strike Gold at box office this week, Ravi Teja starrer latest Telugu film <keyword id="44011" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="power">Power</keyword> got to a good start. In the first weekend collection, the movie has managed to collect nearly Rs 16.04 crores. 
 
The next week is another big one for Bollywood as Daawet-e-Ishk and Khoobsurat clash at the box office. Let us see which amongst the two walks away with the cake.

Box Office: Finding Fanny And Creature 3D Manage A Modest Opening

They say there is no business like the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Mid-year-assessment-It-was-a-roller-coaster-ride-for-Bollywood/articleshow/47830513.cms">movie business</a> and indeed every Friday we have at least one new movie tossed at the audience. And by Sunday, we get to know whether the movie will be a hit, a miss or just an average fare. 
	 
	So far, 2015 has been quite an interesting year from Bollywood’s perspective. Why I say so is because on one hand we had magnanimous opus like Baahubali achieving great success and on the other, there were small budget movies such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Relive-the-90s-with-Dum-Laga-Ke-Haisha/articleshow/46395043.cms">Dum Laga Ke Haisha</a>, NH10 and Badlapur, that managed to swoon the audiences and the critics. 
	 
	Sequels like Tanu Weds Manu Returns managed to outshine their last offering and then we had Piku that conveyed human emotions in a brilliant way and also got the cash register ringing.

	So should we conclude that the era for clichéd, formula-based movies, is coming to an end? 
	 
	Not really as in 2015, we had movies like Hero, Tevar, Roy, etc that banked on the predictable story line to woo the audience and managed to garner mixed acceptance. 
	 
	But, if we see a larger picture, new concepts with small budgets and strong script are doing well. 
	 
	The success of Dum Laga Ke Haisha, Tanu Weds Manu Returns and last year’s Queen hinted that directors and storytellers should venture with newer concepts to engage and entertain the audience. 
	 
	To this trend, Komal Nahata, trade analyst, said, “I would not like to say that there is a trend shift that is happening. From the past three-four years we have seen some small budget movies doing pretty well. The market for such films is also growing. Earlier they used to do well only in certain multiplexes, then it grew to few cities but now in pockets pan-India, they do well.” 
	 
	While it is true that there are quite a few experimental movies that are being screened, but multiple sources in the industry, on conditions of anonymity, told us that about 60-75% of the movies that go on the floor never see light of the day. 
	 
	 
	 
	A lot of these movies are actually finished products but fail to make it to cinema halls as the distributors are unwilling to buy them or the producer has lost confidence in the movie and does not want to spend more money in promoting them. 
	 
	Despite of the fact that some movies do well in global markets, they are not released in India. The movies that have found place in this list include Peddlers, The Coffin Maker, Dekh Indian Circus, etc. 
	 
	Mind you, not all of these shelved movies have lesser known faces as their star cast. The Coffin Maker stars Naseeruddin Shah while Nawazuddin Siddiqui features in Dekh India Circus. 
	 
	Siddiqui said, “It is rather unfortunate that a lot of content-oriented movies in India are still struggling to get funding in the country and there are a few completed projects that are not able to secure a release. Not just Dekh India Circus, there are a few more of my movies that are currently not released and I have started taking more commercial projects since last year with the hope that if I become a little more known face, it will be easier for my directors and producers to get the pending projects released.” 
	 
	And off-beat movies that managed to secure a release, had to face a tough time in the process. 
	 
	For instance, Shonali Bose’s “Margarita With a Straw”, which has Kalki Koechlin as the leading lady, garnered accolades at Toronto International Film Festival and Koechlin also bagged the best actress award at The Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in 2014. After much delays, the movie finally released to Indian audience on April 17, 2015.

	Unfortunately, not all the movies are lucky as this one. There are quite a few of these Bollywoods' lost children that fail to get a screen space in the midst of high-brow glitterati. 
	 
	I managed to see the world premiere of one such movie in the very heart of London’s film world. Being a movie enthusiast, I had heard a lot about London’s prestigious Raindance Film Festival and it was quite a coincidence that I managed to see a Bollywood movie listed as an `official selection’. 
	 
	Curiosity got the better of me and I reached just in the nick of the time to see ‘Peter Gaya Kaam Se’ (PGKS) (aka The Goa Run). The super plush Vue Cinema in Piccadilly Circus was almost full and the first theatrical screening for this lost Bollywood baby was a complete entertainment package. 
	 
	John Owens' action packed adventure tells the story of a motorcycle taxi driver from Goa (Rajeev Khandelwal) who falls in love with Mira, a beautiful and beguiling drug smuggler from London (Lekha Washington). This out and out commercial flick was originally produced by UTV Spotboys but got shelved and largely forgotten during Disneys' protracted takeover of the company. 
	 
	Director John Owen, who has worked in India for many years as one of MTV and Channel [V]’s head honchos, had penned and directed this story. The movie was shot extensively in Goa and took about a month to complete. It turns out that, the Raindance founder Elliot Grove took a personal interest in the film. 
	 
	 
	 
	Says Owen, "Raindance loved the film and were determined to host the world premiere, especially as I am the first Brit to direct a Bollywood film. A fact that makes me very proud. So when Disney finally gave permission I flew over to Mumbai, finished the sound work we had pending at my cost, did the subtitles myself and had a high end digital print made. The quality of the screening was just superb.” 
	 
	Raindance is in its 22nd year and has become one of the world’s premiere film festivals and very highly thought of by the industry itself. 
	 
	Owen adds, "We didn’t have any money to promote the screening so it was all word of mouth and the buzz of social media. People came from all over the country, it was amazing." 
	 
	Ironically, on the very same weekend Disney's Khoobsurat was premiering in the UK and I could see a theatre just across the street in London's Leicester Square showing it. 
	 
	When I put this point across to Owen, he chuckled and said, "It's funny because Shashanka Ghosh and I have been friends since our MTV days. I stayed with him when I was over in Mumbai fixing up the film in September and we joked about him being Disney's loved and me being their unloved child.” 
	 
	Given the response this movie managed to get sans any promotion and that too in London, I was curious to know what plans Owen or Disney have for this movie. Owen shared that some high-flying industry folks were amongst the excited audience and they saw real potential for the film in the UK and the US. 
	 
	No wonder, UK distributors are showing interest in the movie. Even in India PGKS is well-liked amongst industry insiders who were given personal screenings by the director. After all, the film does come with some pedigree. Anurag and Abhinav Kashyap were `creative producers' and UTV’s top producer on the job at the time was the visionary Vikas Bahl (who has given movies such as Chiller Party and Queen). So, what happens now to Peter Gaya Kaam Se? 
	 
	Owen picks on a philosophical note and shares, "It's all about love and timing. PGKS came along at the wrong time in the marriage of UTV and Disney. So, it’s the unwanted child. A bit like how Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire was for Warner Brothers. Warners’ just didn’t like the film so they let Danny go off and find a new home with Fox Searchlight. Fox loved the film, supported Danny, and made Slumdog a massive box office success. The film industry does not work like a science. Sometimes it comes down to personal taste. When I get depressed about the whole thing I think of Danny and Slumdog and get inspired all over again.” 
	 
	While Owen never had the resources or connections to find buyers for PGKS, on its own, he is looking to crowd funding and other ways to get this movie to be released.

	It is noteworthy, that UTV Spotboys was the pioneer of small budget, content-oriented movies in India. 
	 
	Khosla Ka Ghosla was one of the first movies in this genre that was produced under UTV Motion Pictures. Later between 2008 and 2009, under the UTV Spotboys banner, they released movies such as Dev D, Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, Welcome to Sajjanpur, A Wednesday, Mumbai Meri Jaan and Aamir. All these movies managed to get a fair share of success at the ticket window. 
	 
	 
	 
	Another coincidence worth pointing out in the case of Peter Gaya Kaam Se is that it went on floor almost at the same time as Paan Singh Tomar. 
	 
	The latter, too, was produced by UTV Spotboys and managed to get a release on March 2, 2012, almost four years after it was complete and it managed to be a box office success largely due to word of mouth. 
	 
	The bigger coincidence is that Paan Singh Tomar, too, was premiered at the 2010 British Film Institute London, almost two years before its domestic release. 
	 
	We spoke to Rucha Pathak on why it was such a challenge to make a movie like Paan Singh Tomar. 
	 
	Pathak was the associate producer of Paan Singh Tomar and Sr. Creative Director at UTV (now Disney India) when this film was being made and is now Head of Creative &amp; Development at Fox Star Studios. 
	 
	“The main challenges we faced while trying to make Paan Singh Tomar was that because it was probably the first time a film like this was being made people did not realise what it was going to be like and it was therefore completely against the trend in those days,” she said. 
	 
	Also we could not help ask her if is it really possible to get any small budget movie out there in the market to which she answered, “It is difficult to release small and medium budget films these days but not impossible. I think if one can find the right marketing budget and the right target audience that you want to reach out to, then it’s possible to release a film. It is really critical these days to make films at the right budget and market films at the right budget. Once that is under control then I believe one can get a film out to reach an audience that it is meant for.” 
	 
	While Pathak emphasised on the budgeting bit, Nahata feels, “Exhibition or the release strategy is very detrimental to the business of content driven movies. The moment there is a big movie coming in, they are thrown out. Most such movies need time for the word of mouth to pick up.”

The distributors today are looking for instant gratification. They would expect the movie to have 80 to 90% occupancy rates for its release Friday itself. If the movie does not show results by Sunday, then on Monday it is thrown out. This was not really the case earlier. I still remember when Maine Pyaar Kiya released, it had just one cinema hall in Mumbai, later when the word of mouth spread, the movie was given more space and it was a such a huge hit,” shares Ami Shah, co-founder and creative director of IntelliAssist (a company that has handled social media mandates for Bollywood movies). 
 
Indeed, distribution is one big challenge for small budget, content-oriented movies in India. However, Director Onir mentions that it is not the only one. Just to give you a perspective, Onir is an Indian film maker, who has churned out movies such as 'I AM, My Brother Nikhil’ and Bas Ek Pal. He had crowd funded his movie I AM, which released in 2010 and also bagged the national award for the same. 
 
Ask him if given a chance would he again crowd fund a movie or give any other director struggling for funds the same suggestion and he replies, “No it is one thing to make a movie and altogether another to get it to the cinema. Marketing a movie, especially a content-oriented one is a hard job.” 
 
I would agree with his point that it is tough nut to market a movie that does not have bankable stars. Like, Filmistaan, the 2014 movie was an endearing tale of wannabe actor, who gets kidnapped by terrorists and held in the home of a Pakistani who deals in pirated Hindi films. The tale captures how both of them bond over movies. 
 
The trailers of the movie looked very bland and I was not sure whether I would want to waste time watching this movie. Fortunately for me, one of my friend dragged me to this movie and I would admit that it was actually one of the best movies of 2014 that I managed to see and yes it did manage to win a national award as well. 
 
The cost of marketing in itself is quite high as well and it is not just important to buy ad space but also to connect right with your target audience. This is perhaps one lesson that the movie Queen managed to do well and of course the word of mouth helped it consolidate its position over a period of time. 
 
Onir also mentions that the government will have to play a greater role to help protect content-driven cinema in India. “The approach that our government takes is that they treat Bollywood as a business and not art. However, it will have to realize that like any art even movies need a bit of support”. In his opinion, there could be plenty of other avenues where movies can be showcased. 
 
Now talking about television, we have 24-hour movie channels that end up playing same movie almost every weekend. Most TV channels pick up movies that have done well on the box office, so that they don’t have to do much in terms of marketing and yet they can have good TRPs on their so-called “World Television Premiere”. It is a possibility that some of these movies that are left biting the dust, some might be ideal for the TV watching audience but so far these gems are not able to get any real support for this medium too. 
 
With the coming of 4G, it is expected that some of these movies might get a fresh lease of hope. There are producers and directors that are looking for alternative channels to monetize their movies via online ads and pay per view models. Currently none of them has been able to come out with a full proof plan and hence some great marvels of Hindi cinema continue to rot in their graves, while the others in the hands of resilient makers are fighting it hard to get to their audiences.
