They distribute offerings like Kada Prasad — a type of semolina halva made with equal portions of whole-wheat flour, clarified butter, and sugar — among the family members and friends. The tradition of Baisakhi was started in 1699 when the Panj Piaras or the ‘beloved five’ were the first five men to be baptised as Sikh and Guru Gobind Singh laid down the Panth Khalsa — the Order of the Pure Ones — according to scripture. Five individuals are chosen to represent the Panj Piaras and lead religious processions organized in the cities and provinces. Udhampur, May 9 () Joining the efforts of the government to combat coronavirus, a group of young women equipped with a latest hi-tech machine is conducting fogging in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district. The five women, aged between 18 and 22, have already covered six villages in the district and are also distributing masks and educating people about COVID-19. "We are volunteers of NGO 'Team Khalsa' and have managed to get the machine to conduct fogging, especially in remote areas which usually remain unattended," Gagan, the leader of the five-member group, told . She said they have already covered Chhakhar, Vishal Jatta, Sambal, Sui and Kahjahir villages in the past one week. "We are targeting one village for sanitisation and awareness every day," Gagan said while distributing face masks in Cherry Swail village. Asked about the challenge and the response of their families, she said they are cooperating and appreciating their efforts. "We had a tough time convincing our parents for permission as usually men do this kind of job. But now our families are supporting us," she said. Udhampur district accounted for one coronavirus-related death and 21 COVID-19 cases. Out of these 21 cases, 19 have recovered. "A lot of girls feel motivated seeing us in action and express their desire to be part of our team which is very encouraging," Gagan said. Coronavirus: Young women on 'mission fogging' in J-K's Udhampur

Chandigarh, Apr 9 () In a bid to dispel fears that one may contract COVID-19 by attending the last rites of an infected person, two Punjab ministers took part in the cremation of a 55-year-old man in Rupnagar district on Thursday. State Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu and Technical Education Minister Charanjit Singh Channi went to a Rupnagar village to attend the last rites of the man, officials said. The coronavirus patient, who was undergoing treatment at the Chandigarh's PGIMER, had died on Wednesday. He was also suffering from diabetes and hypertension when he tested positive for COVID-19. The initiative by the two ministers came amid reports that people were refusing to cremate such patients fearing the spread of the disease. In a Facebook message and a video posted on the social media platform, the health minister said there was no danger in performing the last rites of coronavirus positive persons. Moreover, ashes also do not pose any danger, Sidhu said, adding that the cremation is carried out in line with the guidelines and protocols of the Health Department. In the past a few days, some incidents surfaced when people refused to accept bodies of their kin. In Ludhiana on Monday, members of a 69-year-old woman's family had refused to accept her body and cremate it, forcing the district administration to perform her last rites. Similarly, the administration had to perform the last rites of a 65-year-old man in Amritsar on Tuesday when his relatives did not come forward for his cremation. A group of villagers in Amritsar's Verka village had too refused to allow the cremation of Padma Shri recipient and former Golden Temple Hazuri Raagi Nirmal Singh Khalsa, fearing the spread of the disease. Amritsar, Apr 7 () In yet another case in the state, a family in Amritsar refused to claim the body of a coronavirus victim, forcing the district administration to perform his last rites, officials said on Tuesday. Similarly, a family in Ludhiana on Monday had refused to accept and cremate the body of a 69-year-old COVID-19 positive woman. The administration there had too perform her last rites. According to an official release, the 69-year-old Amritsar man, a retired superintending engineer at the civic body there, had died at an private hospital on Monday. His family did not respond to the administration when it asked them to claim the body, it said. Thereafter, officials approached the family, but they did not come forward for the last rites. The official release said the daughter of the deceased is pursuing an MBBS course and none of his family members reached the cremation ground where he was consigned to flames. Initially, the man had tested negative for COVID-19 at the Government Medical College in Amritsar. But when his condition did not improve, he was shifted to a private hospital, where he tested positive for the disease. Civil Surgeon Amritsar Prabhdeep Kaur Johal said, "A few days ago, he tested negative for the infection at the GMC lab. Then he went to a private hospital which declared him positive in their preliminary report. Thereafter, we took his samples again for confirmation and found him positive for COVID-19." Chandigarh, Apr 7 () Experts here have called for spreading awareness among people to dispel their fear of catching infection during last rites of COVID-19 suspected or positive cases.They urged the authorities to spread awareness in this regard after two incidents where people refused to cremate bodies of coronavirus victims were reported in the state.Family members of a 69-year-old woman who died of COVID-19 in a private hospital in Ludhiana, had refused to accept her body and cremate it, forcing the district administration to perform her last rites.In another such incident, residents of Verka village in Amritsar did not allow the cremation of Padma Shri awardee Bhai Nirmal Singh Khalsa.The villagers had refused to allow the cremation of the Gurbani exponent fearing spread of the disease.If all the government mandated protocols are followed while performing last rites for such bodies, there is no need to fear, the experts said.D S Bhullar, president of Punjab Academy of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology said there was no need to worry when transportation and cremation of a body of a COVID-19 suspected or confirmed case takes place in line with the protocols set by the government.He said the body is packed in a double layered body bag which is disinfected with hypochlorite solution.Besides, a team wearing PPE takes the body to the cremation ground in an ambulance, Bhullar added."One should not worry as the cremation takes place while following all the guidelines. There is no chance of spread of virus," he said.Professor of Department of Sociology, Panjab University, Rajesh Gill told on Tuesday that, "Humanity is tested when there is crisis and we need to wake up the sensitivity of people."She said there was a need to launch an awareness drive to tell people that that they need to give respect to the bodies."People need to be told what kind of precautions they need to take for cremation and how health authorities will cooperate with them and how they should go about it," she said.The government should spread awareness through TV, radio and other media, she added. Chandigarh, April 12 () Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder on Sunday appealed to the people of the state not to step out of their homes on Baisakhi, which will be celebrated on April 13, and follow the ongoing lockdown imposed to combat the coronavirus outbreak. He also asked them to pray from their homes at 11 am on Monday for the state's victory over the deadly COVID-19 "enemy" and the safety of children. In a message on the eve of the festival, the chief minister said Baisakhi would be "different" this year as the celebrations will lack traditional fervour because people will not be able to venture out of their homes and gather in large congregations. It is necessary for all to stay at home in this difficult time and observe the occasion with prayers for the total elimination of COVID-19 from the state, he said in a statement here. "Let us pray to Waheguru (almighty) to keep us and our Punjab in Charhdi Kala, to keep us safe and happy always," urged the chief minister, pointing out that even the Akal Takht and SGPC had appealed to the people not to congregate or gather outside to celebrate Baisakhi this year. The Akal Takht had asked people from the Sikh community to offer prayers at home on Baisakhi and directed Sikh organisations not to organise large gatherings on the festival in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic. Baisakhi, which falls on April 13 or 14 every year, is a major festival in Punjab as it marks the foundation day of the Khalsa panth' (Sikh order) by the tenth Sikh Guru, Gobind Singh. It also marks the start of harvest season. On this day, people throng gurdwaras to pay their obeisance. Expressing hope and confidence that Punjab would be victorious over the pandemic, Singh appealed to the people to do their duty in this battle, just as lakhs of frontline warriors were doing to keep them safe and protected. He thanked the doctors, nurses, paramedical staff, other health and sanitation workers, the police, the revenue staff, the religious organisations, the NGOs and everyone else engaged in fighting the battle on the frontline, putting their own lives on the line. He thanked the SSPs and the DCs for managing the situation "effectively and efficiently", and expressed confidence that they would all continue to work relentlessly in the coming days in the interest of Punjab and its people. Pointing to the global COVID-19 crisis, the chief minister said the situation was relatively better in Punjab, and in fact across India, due to the early lockdown/curfew and its strict enforcement. It was important to continue with these stringent and difficult measures, despite the inconvenience and frustration being caused to everyone, he added. Underlining the need to continue with such strict restrictions, he cited various studies and expert opinions and said, "If we do not implement the lockdown in the coming days, then the situation can get out of control." The numbers being projected by the experts in the absence of isolation/lockdown are scary, he pointed out. Though, there were some problems with the supply chain at the beginning of the clampdown, things were now on track and would improve further in the coming days, said the CM, assuring full support to everyone in the state in this hour of crisis. Shadab has served over 200 community service hours and given more than 50 presentations to promote Indian culture and values. The youngest awardee this year Kumari Prasiddhi Singh, a 7-year-old social volunteer from Chengalpattu district in Tamil Nadu. She has been awarded for her work in social work. "She is the founder of Prasiddhi Forest and has been in the India Book of Records for being the youngest fruit forest creator in the country. At a very young age, Prasiddhi created eight fruit forests in government schools and public places and planted over 9,000 trees to feed birds and squirrels and give fresh fruits to everyone," according to citation for here. Kumari Venish Keisham, 15, from Imphal West district of Manipur, won the award for her excellence in the field of Art and Culture. "She has won several competitions, including first position in the International Online Art Contest 2020 organised by Akm Kala Sangh, Pathankot, Punjab, India, second position in an international level Online Cartooning Competition organised by Art Affina in collaboration with Khalsa College of Education, Amritsar, and Renaissance Award in International Online Drawing Competition organised by Creative Canvas, 2020," according to the citation. Kameshwar Jagannath Waghmare, 14, from Nanded district of Maharashtra has been awarded for bravery. "His is a story of courage and promptness. He saved two out of three boys from drowning in Manar river. They had gone swimming but could not estimate the depth of the water. Without caring for his own life, Kameshwar jumped into the river and pulled out two boys elder to him. He risked his own life but managed to save two lives," his citation read. Fifteen-year-old Rakesh Krishna K, one of the winners of Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2021, has invented the novel multi-purpose seed-sowing machine called 'SEEDOGRAPHER'. "This innovative machine enables easy and fast sowing of seeds at fixed distances. It is eco-friendly and promotes a dry sowing and lane system that saves 50% water," according to the citation for the awardee. Archit Rahul Patil, 14, from Jalgaon district of Maharashtra has been given the award in the field of Innovation. He has developed a novel way to estimate the obstetric blood loss accurately. Savita Kumari, 16, from Ranchi district of Jharkhand has been awarded for excellence in the field of sports. "Coming from a humble background, with no special privileges, she has excelled in archery at every level. In 2018, she won a gold medal in the 3rd South Asian Archery Championship, Dhaka; a bronze medal in the 65th School Games Federation of India in 2020; and a silver medal in the 13th Jharkhand State Archery Championship in 2019. On 13 seats in Punjab, INC won eight seats, BJP won four seats and Aam Aadmi Party has the one seat to its name. The former actor, Sunny Deol, who joined BJP earlier this month, brought home Gurdaspur for the saffron party. They've also won in Bathinda, Hoshiarpur, and Firozpur. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shriromani Akali Dali (SDA) was counting on the anti-incumbency wave against the state’s Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh, to win over Punjab. They even brought in Sunny Deol to keep the Gurdaspur constituency from falling into Congress’ hands. Their efforts weren’t nearly enough. Even in 2014, the NDA only led by a very thin margin of five seats — four seats went to AAP and three to the UPA. Punjab has 13 Lok Sabha seats in total. For 2019 Lok Sabha elections, all the seats went for polling together during the seventh and the last phase of elections in the country on May 19, 2019. Over the past few general elections, the BJP has been performing poorly in this state either with no seats or with very few seats to take for the parliament. In 2014 elections, the party did not secure even a single seat from here. In 2009 general elections, the party got just one constituency and in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, BJP got just 3 places from Punjab. In the Amritsar constituency, Hardeep Puri of Congress is fighting the Lok Sabha elections 2019 with AAP’s Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal and Hardeep Singh Puri of BJP. From Jalandhar seat, Santokh Singh Chaudhary of Congress has locked horns with AAP's is Jora Singh and SAD’s Charanjit Singh Atwal. SAD is an ally of the BJP. In the Patiala constituency, Preneet Kaur of Congress has contested with Nina Mittal of AAP and Surjit Singh Rakhra of SAD. The choice of candidates by the Congress party in the key constituencies can pose a bigger challenge for AAP and BJP in Punjab.

"Students do not realize that this provision is to tell them the best they can get. If you miss out and find yourself not getting into a good college with a course of your choice, as per your knowledge it's likely to get you in depression. In a recently held session at Khalsa College, students were able to get clarity on a lot of things like - Will mathematics be compulsory for economics honours aspirants? Will a candidate be allowed to take economics even if she has not studied the subject in Class XII? Legal studies and Mass media studies are to be considered as academic subject or electives? 
 
The session informed students that to keep the system centralized, the university has done away with entrance tests in various courses barring courses like Bachelor in Business Economics and Bachelor in Finance and Investment. For students seeking admission through sports quota, fitness test has now been centralized. While the best of four criteria which includes one language and three academic subjects, remains the same as last year; 2.5 % points will be deducted from them, if the subject applied for is not included in vocational subject. Besides, 10 marks will be deducted for every vocational course not included. Also, there will be a maximum penalty for a stream change in case of BA and B.Com honors courses. 
 
DU's Open House Days can therefore go a long way in helping students clear doubts, and figure out what could suit them the best as per their stream, scores and ambitions.  The world of advertising is right now in a phase of disruption. Technology is changing how things work. Data is making it possible for advertisers to target consumers directly, and more effectively. The rise of digital, while making it easier to reach out to consumers, is also making it difficult for advertisers to break the clutter. In such a scenario, what are the essentials that a new-age advertiser needs to take care of, to make sure they not only solve their client’s problems, but that they are also able to make a difference to the lives of consumers too? How does a creative break the clutter in a world that has suddenly become so much noisier than it was a decade ago? What elevates a good idea and takes it to the next level, making it a brilliant idea? And how are agencies coping with the ever-evolving world of advertising? These are a few, among the many questions I threw at Ari Weiss, Chief Creative Officer, DDB Worldwide and Rahul Mathew, National Creative Director, DDB Mudra Group. Weiss was in India as a part of DDB’s first global creative council meet held in Mumbai last month. Weiss, who was elevated to the role in July last year, and the trip to India, and other markets the agency is present in, was aimed at helping him deep-dive into these markets. That he considers India to be a critical market is clear from Weiss’ palpable enthusiasm about the work coming out of the country. He is also confident that India will soon figure among the top markets for the network. Looking back at the last decade The last decade saw the advertising industry go through massive disruption. With the growth of internet, and the increasing use of data in tech in determining consumer behavior and working around that to deliver creatives, the way the ad world works, saw a huge change. Speaking about some of the biggest changes he witnessed, that has brought us where we are today, Weiss said, “We've seen the media landscape shift quite a bit in the last decade. The digital transformation which was already underway at the start of the decade, matured as a market and made it clear that it was here to stay. We saw a lot of experimentation in the early days. We have seen an evolution where from the earlier gimmicks of the platform experimentation, we have now come to longer, effective storytelling and brand building across these platforms. Today we’re seeing more of sustainable brand-building. It's an interesting time for both the creative industry and brands because you have to find simple and striking human truths that can live anywhere and can be built into one big story.” When the entire ecosystem is changing, it’s obvious that the way brands tell their stories will also change. Pointing towards one interesting change, Mathew said, “There is definitely a trend towards brands becoming more conscientious, and that's going to go into the next decade. Brands are now seeing themselves as citizens who live in the environment that everyone else is a part of, and they have to play their role as conscientious citizens of the world that we live and operate in, instead of simply having a capitalistic approach.” The evolution of creativity In today’s world, the way you tell a story is very different from what it was even till a decade back. So from a creative’s lens, how different are things today? What does one need to do to be a good story-teller, while being relevant? “The beauty of creativity is that ultimately it never changes from the fundamental perspective. We have to come up with really interesting ways of telling stories,” explained Weiss. “How we tell the stories, however, has obviously changed. In this fragmented landscape where narratives can take place over hundreds of different platforms, it forces us to come up with a creative idea that is incredibly simple, and has to be incredibly intoxicating at first glance. We talk about the simplicity of a great creative idea. Before, when ideas were living on fewer platforms, you could have some complexity to the idea because it did not have to travel so fluidly. That was a great moment in time as well. But this evolution is a new place to play and these huge ideas living across something of a 3D landscape than a linear landscape, is a wonderful place for creativity and story-telling,” he added. Weiss has also been very vocal about his thoughts on data and technology coming into play in the industry. He has always believed that the data handing creatives with human insights is only as good as the person interpreting it. “I think a mistake we often make is that we let data lead us. But today, there can be so many different ways of interpreting data. Ours is an incredibly human business. And as much technology as we get, it will still need to be processed by incredibly intelligent humans because that's how you pivot between the data and a great insight, and a great creative articulation of that insight,” he explained. And how do you turn an average or a great idea into a brilliant idea? “From day one, we're taught that we're uninvited guests in this world and it requires a lot of creativity to turn that uninvited guest into an invited one. A great idea surprises you, it can be where it lives, what it says and how it can be brought to life.” Pointing to the fact that clients play an equally important role in immortalizing a piece of creative work, Mathew says, “What makes an idea great also depends on the number of people believing in that idea, and the clients rallying behind you. I don’t think we have come up with a great work where our client wasn’t equally great. It’s not tough to come up with a great idea but it’s really tough to protect it which is where great clients come in.” Looking at India’s growth story Despite the overall industry slowdown, DDB Mudra had a good year. With a slew of new clients coming on board, 2019 also became the most-awarded year for the agency as the agency put up a good show at global as well as domestic award shows. The <a href="https://youtu.be/yVjY-doL9n0" data-type="tilCustomLink">Stayfree Project Free Period</a> and ‘Hastagsdontheal’ for Khalsa Aid won the agency a lot of accolades. Moreover, it launched the first ever NBA game in India through the campaign #<a href="https://youtu.be/edMrK7vdqEg" data-type="tilCustomLink">NBAInMyBackyard </a>which focused on the social currency of the game in India and created a sporting spectacle while building a community and coding in culture. Weiss said that the Stayfree campaign particularly impressed him because of it ticked all the right boxes. It was an idea that could be relevant anywhere. “It wasn’t social purpose for social purpose’s sake. It was an incredibly well-told story that landed a brand truth in a very emotional and impactful way,” he said about what he thought worked in the campaign’s favor. Speaking about the energy that the young team in India brings to the table, he added, “When I first met Aditya and Rahul, I felt this youthful, disruptive energy in this team. When you look at the clients who are being attracted to them at the moment, and you look at this disruptor energy from a very young, ambitious and talented team, you just get very excited. You pair the culture, the market and the talent sitting behind it and think that you have to embrace and support it however you can because there's so much potential here.” Sharing his enthusiasm about India as a market, Weiss also said that the sheer size of the market presents a huge opportunity. “This is a market of immense creativity and it's absolutely not lost on me that this is a region of immense growth,” he said. On being asked when he thinks India can be counted among the top markets for the agency globally, he added with a smile, “Today! India is a culture rich in art and you realize that from the moment you land in the country. There are other markets that have the growth potential but not the creative culture that is true to the core DNA of this market. To find that combination of the DNA and the growth, I think India is already there today. We simply have to feed it.”

When Steve Huffman, the site's cofounder, rejoined the company as CEO in 2015, he learned that very few people in Silicon Valley wanted to work at Reddit.</li><li>This is a story about how Reddit convinced hundreds of engineers to come work for the company - and gave Reddit its mojo back.</li></ul> Steve Huffman returned to Reddit, the company he helped launch and later abandoned after its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reddit-cofounders-saw-a-therapist-together-2017-11">multimillion-dollar acquisition</a>, to find it had become one of the most radioactive companies in the Valley.Almost no one wanted to work at Reddit in 2015.In seeking to hire engineers, Huffman told Business Insider, "It was hard to get people to respond." He explained, "Reddit was in the press for all the wrong reasons. All of them. ... Our reputation was in the dumps across pretty much every dimension."Reddit, known as the "front page of the internet," is the <a href="https://www.alexa.com/topsites/countries/US">fifth most-visited website</a> in the US. And yet, it's nearly imploded on several occasions over the last decade. The site has been engulfed in controversies fueled by internet trolls and disgruntled users. A revolving door of CEOs did little to stabilize the startup's reputation or improve morale among a shrinking number of Reddit employees.Huffman stepped back into the role of CEO to save Reddit, but he didn't do it alone.Despite a series of crises, the San Francisco-based company would double its staff, growing from approximately 75 to 150 employees, over 2016. They would transform the site from looking like a <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/reddit-redesign/">dystopian Craigslist</a> - or "hot garbage," as one top Reddit executive described it - into a place where new users could more easily find their people online and share news, images, memes, and video.Today, Reddit has more than 400 employees on its payroll, with the biggest gains in engineering. <a href="https://www.recode.net/2017/7/31/16037126/reddit-funding-200-million-valuation-steve-huffman-alexis-ohanian">The company raised $200 million</a> last year from a number of well-known Silicon Valley investors, including Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital, to continue its hiring spree. It seems that Reddit's renaissance has just begun.Business Insider spoke with Huffman and a handful of engineers at Reddit - as well as checked out journalist Christine Lagorio-Chafkin's excellent, upcoming book about Reddit called <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Are-Nerds-Tumultuous-Internets-Laboratory-ebook/dp/B079L5FTJD">"We Are the Nerds"</a> - to learn how the internet's front page got its mojo back.<h2>Reddit put out a call to 'every engineer in the Valley,' Huffman said</h2>Reddit hadn't hired an engineer in nine months when Huffman - who left Reddit after his contract with the company's buyer, publisher Condé Nast, ran out - rejoined in 2015. And it showed.The site looked very similar to the original version that Huffman and his cofounder, Alexis Ohanian, launched ten years earlier. "It wasn't really hard at that time to look at Reddit and think about ways to improve it," Nick Caldwell, vice president of engineering at Reddit, told Business Insider.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5b9087cd8905f222388b54f5-2400/redditredesignclassic.png" border="0" alt="Reddit redesign" data-mce-source="Reddit" />RedditReddit got a new - but still familiar - look in 2018.</div></div></div>Over the course of 15 years, Caldwell had worked his way up from intern to general manager at Microsoft. When a recruiting firm approached him about going to Reddit in 2016, he was skeptical."I visited Reddit like four times before I took this job," Caldwell said.Huffman needed help trying to staff up Reddit. New hires would allow the company to give the site a refresh, replace much of the original, clunky code, and build new products and features aimed at stamping out hate speech and other noxious content on Reddit.That was easier said than done. Not only did few people want to work at Reddit in 2015, but the San Francisco Bay Area faced a shortage of engineering talent. The problem worsened over the years, according to a recent <a href="https://economicgraph.linkedin.com/resources/linkedin-workforce-report-august-2018">Workforce Report from LinkedIn</a>, as demand for data scientists in particular outstripped supply.In addition to its struggles recruiting engineers, the company had trouble holding onto its existing employees.According to Lagorio-Chafkin's book, about fifty staffers quit or were terminated in the months following Huffman's return to Reddit. Some of those defectors <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reddit-chief-engineer-quits-after-two-months-says-pao-was-on-a-glass-cliff-2015-7">left in protest</a> of Ellen Pao's ousting. (The Silicon Valley power player was asked to resign as CEO of Reddit amid a user revolt.) Others said they <a href="https://www.recode.net/2015/7/13/11614676/reddit-chief-engineer-bethanye-blount-quits-after-less-than-two">couldn't get behind Huffman's vision</a> for a new era at Reddit, the CEO told Lagorio-Chafkin.Reddit hired a recruiting firm that, according to Huffman, "called every engineer in the Valley" in a "brute force" attempt.After accepting the job, Caldwell also hired as many Microsoft employees who were interested in jobs at Reddit as he could."That turned out to be not a huge number of people," he said.With his network tapped out, Caldwell had to search in new places for candidates. It required a change in perspective.<h2>Reddit widened the pipeline for talent</h2>At Microsoft, Caldwell <a href="https://thinkgrowth.org/thoughts-on-building-a-diverse-team-at-reddit-5006bd984efb">has admitted</a> to being one of those hiring managers who scanned people's résumés for top schools and major companies before "taking a deeper look." This strategy can often surface the usual suspects: white male engineers in the Bay Area.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5b92af6bdcee305e298b4e65-1000/nick-caldwell-reddit.png" border="0" alt="nick caldwell reddit" data-mce-source="Reddit" />RedditNick Caldwell, Reddit's vice president of engineering, said the stigma against hiring from coding bootcamps is fading.</div></div></div>In seeking to widen the net, Caldwell began recruiting from coding bootcamps, such as <a href="https://hackbrightacademy.com/">Hackbright Academy</a>, whose mission is to help women from diverse backgrounds land jobs in tech. It specializes in providing opportunities to women with a few years of work experience under their belts, those who want to explore a new career path.There's an old stigma that people who emerge from coding bootcamps are less skilled than those with computer science degrees. That's changing rapidly, according to Caldwell."People are realizing that technology changes so fast nowadays that you don't necessarily get practical knowledge from a college degree," he said. "And bootcamps are like only practical knowledge."As a bonus, companies who aim to improve the ratio of male and female employees may find that "bootcamps bypass a lot of the traditional problems that people have with the pipeline," Caldwell said. These programs are often much more affordable than college and can be completed in weeks or months, not years, which <a href="https://www.coursereport.com/blog/diversity-in-tech-why-tech-is-poised-to-see-a-change-in-2018">makes them accessible</a> to a wider range of potential students.Building a diverse organization is especially important when you run a site viewed by <a href="https://thenextweb.com/contributors/2018/04/19/reddit-now-active-users-twitter-engaging-porn/">millions of people</a> each month."You cannot build a product that appeals to a diverse set of people without having a diverse set of people designing product," Huffman said.Reddit declined to release its hiring or diversity statistics. However, the company has hired half a dozen graduates from Hackbright Academy alone - and has even more employees, including Huffman, serving as program mentors to aid in recruiting efforts. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5b900edb04f16238008b592d-1920/reddit-sf-steve-huffman-1.jpg" border="0" alt="reddit sf steve huffman 1" data-mce-source="Reddit" />RedditReddit has over 400 employees today.</div></div></div><h2>Having an impact matters</h2>With its headcount ticking up, Reddit began shipping product again. In 2016, the startup overhauled its mobile app, created new tools for tracking site traffic, and launched a new department, <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2016/05/25/reddit-cto-marty-weiner-on-building-a-home-for-the-internets-wildest-community/">known internally as the "anti-evil" team</a>, that was dedicated to ridding the site of harassment, spam, and abuse. Their efforts slashed the number of spam reports coming from users and moderators by 90%.Huffman set out to double staff again the following year.By then, the team had made a key discovery about how to get people to come work for Reddit: It had to sell them on the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ashton-kutcher-invest-startup-2018-9">story</a>.Bhavana Shanbhag was comfortable with her gig as an engineering manager at Groupon when she received a cold message on LinkedIn from one of Reddit's directors of engineering in 2017. In it, he described some of the problems they were trying to solve for."We need people like you," Shanbhag remembered him saying.Shanbhag, who described herself as a "lurker" on Reddit more than a hardcore user, made arrangements to interview with 12 employees - more than what was required of her - before accepting the offer."I didn't want to switch my job for the sake of switching it," she said. "I wanted to make sure that I would actually have an impact."Caldwell heard this from potential hires a lot. The team started to think critically about how they pitched candidates on the startup."What we settled on in those early days was - the value of Reddit was really about building community. And people coming into the company had huge amounts of opportunity to pick up the low-hanging fruit, to help us toward that mission," Caldwell said. "Once we really understood that, the pitch was pretty straightforward."He explained: "Hey, you can be the first person to come into Reddit and help us build our machine learning processes. And by first person, I mean literally, there's no one else here. But Reddit offered ambitious engineers huge amounts of impact on a product under rapid development."It's pretty cool, as well," he said.<div>In her role as senior director of engineering, Shanbhag said she often hears the question she asked - "Will I have impact?" - from people she's trying to recruit. She gives them a resounding "yes."</div><h2>The startup is still hiring, but not without growing pains</h2>There's still more to do, according to Huffman."I don't think the pitch has changed tremendously," Huffman said. "Everything is changing here, like we're rebuilding this company that has more potential energy than any company that you're talking to or thinking about joining. I can guarantee you that."Reddit grew the number of engineers by 270% since the start of 2017, and it's still hiring. There are about two dozen <a href="https://www.redditinc.com/careers">job listings</a> on the website, spanning data science, engineering, legal, and marketing, across offices in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago.It hasn't been all kittens and rainbows.Employees agreed that Reddit grew too quickly, and the situation left some new hires feeling underutilized. The company slowed recruiting over the past summer to catch its breath and see what the full capacity of all its new hires was before ramping back up."We're 400-some people now, and fewer than 20 of those people were here in 2016," Huffman said. "Every quarter, we joke that it's a new company.
