First Zika virus case detected in Kerala, says state's health minister

At least 140 teenagers killed themselves in <keyword id="28504" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala">Kerala</keyword> for trivial reasons in the last six months, a study said, prompting the state Human Rights Commission (SHRC) to direct the Social Justice Department to examine the effectiveness of its suicide prevention measures. In his direction to the Director of the department on Monday, SHRC chairmanAntony Dominic also sought a report on the initiatives taken to prevent suicide by youngsters. "As per a complaint received by the panel, a study conducted by DISHA, an NGO, shows that at least 140 youngsters in the age group of 13 to 18 had committed suicide during the period of January 2020 to June 2020," a commission release said. The study said thatfamily disputes, troubled love affairs, failure in examinations, issues over mobile phones, two-wheelers were among the major reasons for the suicides. "Thiruvananthapuram district has the highest number of suicides with 22 youngsters having taken the extreme step, followed by Malappuram with 20 suicides," the SHRC said. The complaint said that the ineffectiveness of "village child protection councils"has resulted in the rising number of suicides among youngsters. The release said the SHRC asked the Social Justice Department to review the effectiveness of the suicide prevention measures being taken up by it and sought a report. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had in July said instances of suicidaltendencies were being witnessed among children and termed it as an "extremely serious social issue". "Since March 25, when the national lockdown was imposed, 66 children, below 18 years of age, have ended their lives due to various reasons," Vijayan had said. To help the children facing issues relating to mental pressures, 'Chiri'a tele-counselling initiative was initiated by the government under its Our Responsibility to Children Programme (ORC), a planned community intervention that connects with Children and Young people between the age of 12 -18 years. The health department had launched "Ottakalla Oppamund" (You are not alone, we are with you) programme to help children facing any kind of mental distress and to stop the suicidal tendencies among them. A committee headed by Fire and Rescue Services DGP R Sreelekha had also been constituted to conduct a study on suicides by children in the state. Kerala cinema halls unlikely to open soon as coronavirus cases peak

<ul><li><keyword id="6357542" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="kannur">Kannur</keyword> has launched a new initiative that will train school students to identify and combat fake news. </li><li>The initiative was inaugurated on 13 June with a one-day training programme for 150 teachers. </li><li>If the first phase of the programme is successful, it will be extended to parent-teacher associations and other schools as well. </li></ul>Kannur, a coastal district in Kerala, has launched a new initiative by the name of Satyameva Jayate that will train school students to identify and combat fake news. The initiative has been launched for students from class VIII to XII, across 150 government schools. The main aim is to inculcate the spirit of ‘Article 51 (A) (h)’ which is ‘to develop the scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform’. The district was recently hit by an anti-vaccination wave because of the circulation of fake WhatsApp messages which claimed that a particular vaccination was harmful. Since the teachers use smartphones and internet for verifying information with credible sources, there is a fear that the training might end up as just another forgettable lecture for students who do not have access to these. Therefore, the teachers are performing exercises in class to ensure that students practice the protocol even outside classes. The programme is in its first phase and this ends after three months, depending on how things work out, the message will be extended to parent-teacher associations across the 150 schools and then will be extended to other schools as well.

Given that power and logistics are the largest components of any metals and materials business, it makes sense for the Adani Group to cement business as logistics and power are the two big costs in this business. Mergers and acquisitions in the cement sector have gained steam again, with multiple assets exchanging hands post Adani-Holcim deal last May, says Jefferies. The foreign investment research firm, says: “Notably, acquirers have avoided overpaying for assets (with the last two deals at $70-75/t). With top players wanting to maximise capacity share amid healthy growing demand, a rush of expansions and M&amp;As should continue to re-shape the industry. Through M&amp;A, buyers add readymade capacity, scale, faster access to markets, and reserves.” While acquisition of Holcim’s India cement business was a big deal, there have been many smaller deals too in the space. Some others that got acquired include Century, JPA, Lafarge, Reliance Cement, while others like Binani, Kalyanpur, Murli went through the NCLT process before changing hands. Market is abuzz with news of some other listed cement players looking at merging with the bigger players, as competitive intensity is set to increase. With infrastructure major like the Adani Group using its other businesses to support the cement business, cost of production will come down. In fact, Adani Group CFO Jugshinder Singh has talked in the past of ACC and Ambuja becoming the lowest cost producers of cement in India. Given that India is seeing a boom in infrastructure, consumption of cement will increase and if existing players were to create new assets or greenfield assets then it would take them at least 5-7 years. With acquisition the journey can be drastically cut shot and market share gains can come overnight. Investment bankers say that the smaller regional cement players would look at exiting the sector and sell out in the face of tough competition from bigger and more efficient players like the Adani Group. While acquiring Sanghi Cement, Karan Adani said that the group’s vision was to produce lowest cost clinker in the country at Sanghipuram and then transport clinker as well as bulk cement through coastal route to the market of Saurashtra, South Gujarat, Mumbai and Mumbai Metropolitan region, Karnataka and Kerela. He added: “Synergy with the assets of Adani ports will help us accelerate in the implementation of this strategy. With the right implementation we are very confident that we would be the lowest cost supplier of cement in all these markets.” It would be hard for any small regional player to compete with such backward linkages and keep costs low.

India's COVID-19 tally climbs to 13,85,522

New Delhi, Apr 15 () To ensure maximum containment of coronavirus during the lockdown period, the Union Health Ministry has asked states to classify districts into hotspots, non-hotspots and green zones.The Centre has declared 170 hotspots --- 123 hotspot districts with large outbreaks and 47 hotspot districts with clusters --- in 25 states and Union territories.Besides, it has identified 207 non-hotspot districts with clusters in 27 states. Districts witnessing high number of cases or high growth rate of infections are being marked as hotspots; districts where some cases have been found as non-hotspots; and those which have reported no cases as green zones. In a letter to all chief secretaries of states and UTs, Union Health Secretary Preeti Sudan said hotspot districts need to ensure implementation of the outbreak containment plan, adding that the states also need to identify hotspots based on the doubling rate of confirmed cases. "This exercise of identification of hotspots has to be done on a weekly basis (every Monday) or earlier. Strict containment measures need to be implemented in these hotspots," she said.Further, for non-hotspot districts reporting cases, states need to ensure that containment measures are taken so as to ensure that cases in these areas can be contained.The letter, however, does not specify any district as a green zone. Sudan asked states to undertake effective surveillance of severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) and infuenza like illness (ILI) cases in districts that do not have any confirmed cases so far besides ensuring setting up of dedicated COVID-19 hospitals."Containment operation would be deemed over when there is no case reported in 28 days from an area after last case tests negative. Hotspots (designated red zones) will be assumed to be undertaking effective containment activities, if no case is reported in next 14 days (designated orange zones) will be deemed successful in containment, if no case is reported for 28 days (designated green zones)," Sudan said in the letter."It is requested that states should utilize the extended lockdown period to the maximum extent to convert the hotspots (red) to orange and in turn green zones," she said.Red zone districts which require focused attention are those reporting large numbers of cases or having high growth rate of infections. These are the highest case load districts contributing to more than 80 pc of cases in lndia or highest case load districts contributing to more than 80 pc of cases for each state in lndia.Hotspots districts with large outbreaks in Delhi are south, south east, Shahdara, west, north, central, New Delhi, East, south-west in Delhi while north west has been identified as hotspot district with clusters. (Eds: With updated data) New Delhi, Apr 13 () With a record 51 fatalities within 24 hours, the death toll due to coronavirus jumped to 324 and the number of cases in the country climbed to 9,352 on Monday, an increase of 905 since Sunday evening, according to the Union Health Ministry.While the number of active COVID-19 cases stood at 8,048, as many as 979 people have been cured and discharged, and one had migrated, it said. The total number of cases include 72 foreign nationals.Fifty-one deaths have been reported since Sunday evening, of which 22 were from Maharashtra, seven each from Madhya Pradesh and Telengana, five from Delhi, four from Gujarat, two from West Bengal and one each from Kerela, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand.Of the total 324 deaths, Maharashtra tops the tally with 149 fatalities, followed by Madhya Pradesh at 43, Gujarat at 26, Delhi at 24 and Telengana at 16. Punjab and Tamil Nadu have registered 11 deaths each while West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh have reported seven deaths each.Karnataka have reported six deaths each while five people have lost their lives in Uttar Pradesh. Jammu and Kashmir has reported four fatalities, while Kerala, Haryana and Rajasthan have recorded three deaths each. Jharkhand has registered two deaths.Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha and Assam reported one fatality each, according to the health ministry data.However, a tally of figures reported by various states as on Monday evening showed at least 9,594 cases and 335 deaths.There has been a lag in the Union Health Ministry figures, compared to the number of cases announced by different states, which officials attribute to procedural delays in assigning the cases to individual states.According to the ministry's data updated in the evening, the highest number of confirmed cases in the country are from Maharashtra at 1,985 followed by Delhi at 1,154 and Tamil Nadu at 1,075.COVID-19 cases have gone up to 812 in Rajasthan followed by 604 in Madhya Pradesh, 562 in Telengana and 539 in Gujarat. Uttar Pradesh has 483 cases, followed by Andhra Pradesh at 432, Kerala at 376 and Karnataka at 247.The number of novel coronavirus cases has risen to 245 in Jammu and Kashmir and 185 in Haryana. Punjab has reported 167 cases while West Bengal has reported 152 infections so far.Bihar has reported 64 cases, while Odisha has 54 coronavirus cases. Thirty-five people were infected with the virus in Uttarakhand, while Himachal Pradesh has 32 cases followed by Assam and Chhattisgarh with 31 cases each.Chandigarh reported 21 cases, Jharkhand 19 and Ladakh 15, while 11 cases have been reported from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.Goa and Puducherry have reported seven COVID-19 infections each, Manipur and Tripura have two cases each, while Mizoram, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh have reported a case each."State-wise distribution is subject to further verification and reconciliation," the ministry said on its website. From the next financial year, alcohol will be banned in Bihar, as announced by the state’s Chief Minister <keyword id="6358190" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nitish-Kumar">Nitish Kumar</keyword>. He has done so after he had promised a group of angry women about the same, at an event in July. Reportedly, the women were angry over the alarming addiction to country liquor in Bihar villages. 
 
"In 1977-78 we tried to impose prohibition but it was not effective. But I feel women are suffering more than others (because of alcohol abuse)... I have instructed my officials to start working towards this and implement this from the next financial year," Mr Kumar said at a function. 
 
After his swearing in as Bihar’s Chief Minister last week, this is his first major announcement. However, one can’t be sure if alcohol would be completely banned or the ban would be restricted to just country liquor. 
 
Talking of the income through alcohol, last year Bihar government earned nearly Rs. 3,500 crore through taxes on the sale of alcohol. How and when this loss of revenue would be covered up is yet to be known. 
 
Other Indian states where alcohol is banned are Gujarat, Nagaland, Manipur and Lakshwadeep. Last year, Kerela too had announced its aim to be alcohol-free within 10 years.

The acquisition will expand their reach tremendously and they can give uninterrupted services and data speeds to the users. RJIL won the spectrum in all major circles including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerela. They will provide services in the North-East and Assam as well. 
 <keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>, Chairman and Managing Director, <keyword id="6355199" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries">Reliance Industries</keyword> Limited said: “With this acquisition, <keyword id="6354504" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Reliance-Jio">Reliance Jio</keyword> will be the holder of the largest quantum of liberalized spectrum and with the longest residual spectrum life. Reliance Jio’s seamless 4G services using FDD-LTE on 1800 MHz and TDD-LTE on 2300 MHz through an integrated ecosystem, aims to provide unparalleled high quality access to innovative and empowering digital content, applications and services.” 
 
Reliance is again looking like a major force to reckon with in the mobile sector with this procurement. Many reports had stated that the 3G and 4G data prices will come down considerably once Reliance starts its deployment. After this, all eyes will be on RJIL. The dates when RJIL start giving services to the end customers is still unclear, but should be by end of 2014. This will very well be the beginning of a price war in the 3G and 4G space in India, where the end user will benefit the most.

Reliance JIO Acquires 1,800 MHz Band In 14 Indian Circles

Former President, top scientist, <keyword id="100256" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Ratna">Bharat Ratna</keyword>, these are just some of the titles that come before the name of Dr AJP Abdul <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=kalam">Kalam</a>, who passed away on Monday while delivering lecture at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=iim">IIM </a>Shillong. 
 
Born on October 15, 1931 in a family of a boat owner in Tamil Nadu’s Rameshwaram, Kalam survived all hardship to grow big in life. He distributed newspaper at one to time to support his family and education. 
 After pursuing graduation in Physics from Madras University, AJP <keyword id="5141" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Abdul-Kalam">Abdul Kalam</keyword> decide to take up Aerospace Engineering as he then desired to become a fighter pilot. But the destiny had some bigger plans for him. Traversing through his career journey at the <keyword id="6355142" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="DRDO">DRDO</keyword>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=isro">ISRO</a>, Chief Scientific Advisor to the <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> in 1992, the <keyword id="858029" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pokhran-nuclear-test">Pokhran nuclear test</keyword>, he was ultimately elected as India’s 11th President in 2002. 
 
And what Kalam will always be remembered for is, a President who brought people to the Rashtrapati Bhawan and this is what made him the ‘People’s President'. 
 
Once the 83-year-old had said, “It is very easy to defeat someone, but it is very hard to win someone.” And certainly it’s his inspiring words through which he rules over a million hearts. 
 
Abhishek Sharma, a software developed, shared on Quora, “Once, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam rejected the suggestion to put broken glass on the wall of a building that needed protection. Why? Because broken glass would be harmful for birds! This happened when Dr Kalam was with the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=drdo">DRDO </a>and his team was discussing options to secure the perimeter of a building that needed protection. Dr Kalam reportedly said, “If we do that, birds will not be able to perch on the wall.” 
 
The other instance is when Quora user Naman Narain drew a sketch of Dr Kalam and sent it to the President. To his surprise, the President sent him a thank you card, with a short handwritten message and personalised with his signature. 
 
At a convocation ceremony of IIT (BHU) Varanasi, Dr Kalam was the Chief Guest. There were five chairs on the stage, the centre one being for him, the other four designated for the top university officials. Noticing his chair being bigger in size than the others, Dr Kalam refused to sit on it and offered the Vice Chancellor to sit in stead. Immediately, another chair was made available for the ‘People’s president.’ 
 Another action that displays down-to-earth demeanour of Dr Kalam is that during his first visit to <keyword id="165422" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trivandrum">Trivandrum</keyword> as the then President, he was entitled to invite anyone as the “Presidential Guests” to Kerala’s <keyword id="138" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Raj-Bhavan">Raj Bhavan</keyword>. And as Dr Kalam had spent a significant time as a scientist in Trivandrum, he invited a road-side cobbler – who was quite close to him during his time in Kerela; and so was the owner of the small hotel where Dr Kalam would often have his meals. Can you ever imagine any other politician or a celebrity of his stature inviting a cobbler and a small business owner as his/her most prestigious guests? 
 <keyword id="6359039" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sourav-Ganguly">Sourav Ganguly</keyword>, who received the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=padma+shri">Padma Shri</a> from Dr Kalam in 2004, recalls instances of the Indian <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=cricket">Cricket </a>team's interactions with the former President after finishing runners-up in the 2003 <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=world+cup">World Cup</a> in South Africa. "I remember he wished the team. I remember <keyword id="6364325" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anil-Kumble">Anil Kumble</keyword> asked him about his subject. He knew little about cricket and we tried to explain to him how 11 men move around a cricket ball. But whenever we met him we realised that his world and thinking was different. He has become the President of India but his thought process is different from the others," said Ganguly, regarding India’s missile man as a visionary.
