<keyword id="19897366" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Thiruvananthapuram" source="keywords">Thiruvananthapuram</keyword> (<keyword id="28504" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala" source="Orion">Kerala</keyword>) [India], June 25 (ANI): Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan moved the resolution with amendments on Monday, which was passed by the state assembly unanimously on August 9, 2023, demanding that the central government take immediate action to change the name of the state to "<keyword id="22166057" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Keralam" source="keywords">Keralam</keyword>," which was recorded as Kerala in the 1st and 8th schedule of the constitution. The resolution was sent to the central government and the Home Department has informed the state that the change is required only in the 1st schedule of the constitution. On the basis of that, the chief minister presented the resolution with amendments, and the assembly passed the resolution. The resolution read that there was a demand for the formation of a state for the Malayalam-speaking people from the time of the national freedom struggle. When the state was formed on the basis of language on November 1 1956, it was recorded as Kerala in the 1st schedule of the constitution. The name of the state in <keyword id="19901815" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="malayalam" source="keywords">Malayalam</keyword> is "Keralam," and the state assembly unanimously requested that the central government make the necessary amendments under Article 3 of the constitution to change the name of the state to "Keralam.". All members supported the resolution and speaker declared that the resolution has been passed unanimously. Earlier, on August 9, 2023, the Kerala Legislative Assembly had unanimously passed a resolution urging the Central government to officially change the name of the State from 'Kerala' to 'Keralam.' CM Vijayan who moved the resolution in the assembly, said, "In our Malayalam language, it is 'Keralam' while in other languages it is called Kerala." "This Assembly unanimously requests the Union Government to take immediate steps to amend it as 'Keralam' under Article 3 of the Constitution and it be renamed as 'Keralam' in all the languages mentioned in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution," the chief minister further said.

With the menace of dumping waste by people on roads and open public spaces, the <keyword id="28504" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kerala" source="Orion">Kerala</keyword> government has now come up with a novel scheme to reward all those who report such acts and earn up to Rs 2,500 for each reporting. This is part of the 'Malinya Muktham Nava Keralam' campaign to make the state garbage-free. Additional Chief Secretary, <keyword id="1723161" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="local-self-government-department" source="Orion">Local Self Government Department</keyword>, Sarada Muraleedharan, issued an order in this regard, suggesting citizens to report littering/dumping of both solid and liquid waste in public spaces, private property and water bodies. The person who informs authorities of such violations will be given Rs 2,500 (maximum) or 25 per cent of the fine imposed on those resorting to disallowed disposal of garbage. The report must be backed with evidence, including credible photograph or video clip, along with details such as the place and time of the wrong-doing. The order states that citizens have to report with a WhatsApp number and E-mail and authorities will not publicise the informer's name or details. The order also asks all local bodies to conduct widespread awareness campaigns against littering of waste and garbage-dumping, besides on the citizens' responsibility of reporting violations and obtaining reward for it. The enforcement teams can seize and confiscate vehicles that illegally carry garbage. If needed, the carriers can be arrested and legal steps be taken against the violators.

Kochi, Jun 17 () A 51-year-old man, who was battling for life after being infected by coronavirus has recovered after undergoing convalescent plasma therapy at a government hospital in Thrissur, in a first such instance in Kerala using the experimental medical technique. The beneficiary, who had been on ventilator for almost a week was taken off the support after a team of doctors administered the plasma of a person cured of the disease. The man is now recuperating in the ICU, doctors said. The therapy involves separation of anti bodies from a person cured of coronavirus and its subsequent infusion into the COVID-19 patient in a critical condition. Performed as a medical emergency, the technique was used at the Government Medical College (GMC) in Thrissur. The benefactor was a Delhi-returned Malayali. He tested positive for COVID-19 on June 6 and faced acute respiratory complications five days later, warranting the use of a ventilator. On June 11 night, the patient underwent the convalescent plasma collection therapy that lasted till day break. "The procedure requires volunteers who have recovered from COVID-19 and are above the age of 18. They can donate plasma, the yellowish liquid component of the blood, between the first and fourth months after cure," said M A Andrews, Principal of GMC in a statement issued by National Health Mission's Arogya Keralam. The therapy has proven its potential and given the COVID-19 patient a fresh lease of life, the doctor said. Convalescent plasma therapy relies on an apparatus called apheresis that separates the plasma from the donor's blood. Unlike the usual blood donation, the remainder here returns to the donor's circulation. "In one go, we take 400 grams of plasma. And transfuse it into the COVID-19 patient in two phases of 200 grams each," Andrews said. "The therapy has absolutely no side effects," he added. TGB ROH ROH

Kochi, Apr 11 (): A four-drug mix for COVID-19patients, who are at the initial stage of developingpneumonia, is proving quite effective in saving lives in aKerala hospital and could even become an international modelfor treating the pandemic, doctors have said. COVID-19 patients require intensive observation andprompt tests, but this pioneering treatment, based on afour-drug mix, is earning global recognition followingsuccess stories at the Government Medical College (GMC),according to doctors at GMC, Ernakulam. Citing an example, top physicians at the hospitalrecalled the case of British national Brian Lockwood who wasadmitted to the hospital last month. The 57-year-old tourist was brought to the hospital atKalamassery on March 15 just ahead of boarding a flight toDubai. A 17-day isolation at the hospital helped Lockwoodrecover from COVID-19. In a statement issued by National Health Mission(Arogya Keralam), Dr A Fathahudeen and Dr Jacob K Jacob ofGMC pointed out that Lockwood had no signs of serious ailmentwhen he was admitted to the hospital, having been broughtfrom the international airport at Nedumbassery. He (Lockwood) had only low fever and mild cough. Hecame walking in, recalled Dr Fathahudeen about theBritisher, who had arrived in Kerala on March 10 and visitedthe scenic Munnar hills. The patient underwent an X-ray test. Seeing the report,we sensed all wasnt well. We referred him for a CT scan.That step proved decisive in Lockwood's recovery. In theprocess, he became the first COVID-19 patient in India toundergo a CT scan," the doctor said.Dr Jacob, who is with GMCs Internal MedicineDepartment, referred to another milestone in Lockwood's pathto recovery at the hospitals ICU. That was on March 17 when he was given a unique mix offour medicines following breathing trouble for which thepatient was first provided respiratory support Within hours, Lockwood was administered a mix of fourdrugs: two varieties of HIV anti-virus, andhydroxychloroquine and azithromycin. This treatment is less likely to have the desiredresult on a patient with advanced stage of coronavirus. Inthe Britisher's case, fever came down by the eighth day.That was the first sign of the patient recovering, said DrFathahudeen. He cited the instance of the 69-year-old Malayalee whodied in GMC of COVID-19 on March 28.The Kochi resident was already diabetic and had a heartproblem. The man recently returned from the Gulf where hecontracted coronavirus, and had let his new disease aggravateby remaining homebound for a few days before getting admittedto the hospital, observed Dr Fathahudeen. The driver of the cab that had earlier picked the manfrom the Kochi airport, too, went on to contract the virus.He was young, and so we could ensure his recovery. Thepatient can be discharged only if both two tests held 24hours apart show coronavirus-negative, he said. Four-drug mix for COVID-19 can work wonders, say Kerala docs

<ul><li>The CPI(M) has proposed the construction of a 5.7km bypass through a paddy field belt in Keezhattur.</li><li>The proposal is expected to involve the reclamation of around 250 acres of land, a significant portion of which is paddy fields.</li><li>Environmental conservation and the protection of paddy fields were key components of the the party’s election manifesto in 2016.</li></ul> A fortnight after its <keyword id="45092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="farmers">farmers</keyword> organising wing, the All-India Kisan Sabha, led a successful march in Maharashtra, the <keyword id="71501" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Communist">Communist</keyword> Party of India (Marxist) finds itself on the other side of the line in Kerala- the state it governs as part of the Left Democratic Front (LDF). The CPI(M) has proposed the construction of a 5.7km bypass through a paddy field belt in Keezhattur, a CPI(M)-stronghold in the district of Kannur. The bypass off NH 66, which has been in the works since 2003, is expected to result in the reclamation of around 250 acres of land, a significant portion of which is paddy fields. The bypass proposal has led to a spate of protests by farmers as it will affect paddy cultivation. Contradicting its own manifesto In most cases, the CPI(M)’s proposal would be a defensible political move, given that the goal here is infrastructure development. However, the party is said to be backtracking on a previous stance it took as part of the Opposition in 2015, wherein it opposed a plan by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to build over the paddy fields due to environmental reasons. Infact, environmental conservation and the protection of paddy fields were key components of the LDF’s <a href="http://cpim.org/5-state-elections-2016/.../kerala_ldf_manifesto_2016-english_version.doc">election manifesto</a> in 2016. The manifesto stated:- “Paddy fields all through the state will be declared protected paddy areas, while protecting the rights of their owners.”

 Paddy cultivation is an important source of income in the region. Furthermore, the Keezhattur wetlands and paddy fields sustain the region’s water table, and hence the construction of the highway is expected to cut off the supply of water for the district’s farmers and residents. The CPI(M)’s proposal contradicts the pledges of its manifesto. It also strikes at the core of its support base- farmers. As a result, a number of divisions between the party’s leaders and workers have been exposed in the ensuing fallout. Another farmers march The agitation began in <a href="http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/kerala/cpim-leadership-workers-differ-on-bypass-project/article19701290.ece">September 2017,</a> when the bypass plan was mooted. A number of CPI(M) cadres and supporters formed a group called Vayal Kilikal, which translates into “birds of the paddy field”. The group, which is led by Suresh Keezhattoor, a former party worker, staged a hunger strike before being placated by the government. The protests were restarted again this month after the NHAI started surveying the land for acquisition purposes. On March 25th, clearly inspired by their counterparts in Maharashtra, the group commenced a peaceful march from the town of Taliparamba to Keezhattur in response to a CPI(M)-led march the previous day. They were joined by environmental activists and notably, BJP politicians. Hundreds of people were reported to have participated in the march.

 As things stand, the chief minister of <keyword id="28504" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala">Kerala</keyword>, Pinarayi Vijayan, is set to meet Nitin Gadkari, the Union minister for transport and highways, later this week to discuss the issue. While an elevated highway has been proposed as an alternative to the bypass, it has been struck down by the Vayal Kilikal. The unrest against the CPI(M) is growing. A longer march from Keezhattur to the state capital Thiruvananthapuram is slated for early April. Hopefully, a settlement will be reached.
