The deadly landslides in Kerala's ecologically fragile Wayanad district were triggered by a heavy burst of rainfall, made 10 per cent heavier by <keyword id="19907392" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate-change" source="keywords">climate change</keyword>, according to a new rapid attribution study by a global team of scientists. Researchers from India, Sweden, the US and the UK warned that such events will become more common as the climate continues to warm. To measure the impact of human-caused climate change, the scientists from the <keyword id="12008149" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Weather-Attribution" source="Orion">World Weather Attribution</keyword> (WWA) group analysed climate models with high enough resolution to accurately reflect rainfall in the relatively small study area. The models indicated that the intensity of rainfall has increased by 10 per cent due to climate change, they said. The models also predict a further four per cent increase in rainfall intensity if the average <keyword id="21951013" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-temperature" source="keywords">global temperature</keyword> rises by two degrees Celsius compared to the 1850-1900 average. The scientists, however, said there is a "high level of uncertainty" in the model results as the study area is small and mountainous with complex rainfall-climate dynamics. Having said that, the increase in heavy one-day rainfall events aligns with a growing body of scientific evidence on extreme rainfall in a warming world, including in India, and the understanding that a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, leading to heavier downpours. According to scientists, the atmosphere's capacity to hold moisture increases by about 7 per cent for every one-degree Celsius rise in global temperature. The Earth's global surface temperature has already increased by around 1.3 degrees Celsius due to the rapidly rising concentration of greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide and methane. Scientists say this is the reason behind worsening <keyword id="19912530" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="extreme-weather-events" source="keywords">extreme weather events</keyword>, such as droughts, heat waves and floods worldwide. The WWA scientists said that while the relationship between land cover, land use changes and landslide risk in Wayanad is not fully clear from existing studies, factors, such as quarrying for building materials and a 62 per cent reduction in forest cover may have increased the slopes' susceptibility to landslides during heavy rainfall. Other researchers have also linked the <keyword id="22597176" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wayanad-landslides" source="keywords">Wayanad landslides</keyword> to a combination of forest cover loss, mining in fragile terrain and prolonged rain followed by heavy precipitation. S Abhilash, the director of the Advanced Centre for Atmospheric Radar Research at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), had earlier told PTI that the warming of the Arabian Sea is leading to the formation of deep cloud systems, resulting in extremely heavy rainfall in Kerala in a short period and increasing the risk of landslides. "Our research found that the southeast Arabian Sea is becoming warmer, causing the atmosphere above Kerala to become thermodynamically unstable. This instability is allowing the formation of deep clouds," he had said. According to the landslide atlas released by ISRO's National Remote Sensing Centre last year, 10 out of the top 30 landslide-prone districts in India are in Kerala, with Wayanad ranked at the 13th spot. A study published by Springer in 2021 said all landslide hotspots in Kerala are in the Western Ghats region and are concentrated in Idukki, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Wayanad, Kozhikode and Malappuram districts. It said about 59 per cent of total landslides in Kerala have occurred in plantation areas. A 2022 study on depleting forest cover in Wayanad showed that 62 per cent of forests in the district disappeared between 1950 and 2018, while plantation cover rose by around 1,800 per cent.

When Prime Minister Modi addressed the nation on March 19 asking people to participate in a Janata Curfew — Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan immediately announced income transfer of ₹2,400 to 55 lakh residents, setting up 1000 free food stalls to feed the needy for free and provide others basic nutrition at ₹20 a meal; and ₹2000 crore for MGNREGA workers over the next 2 months, among other measures. Even though it was one of the first states to implement a partial lockdown and enforce social distancing, many criticized it for taking longer to close down bars, pubs and liquor shops. Kerala was the worst-hit state from Coronavirus in India — now it’s fifth in the country

Kerala Health Minister Veena George on Monday informed that 29 more people have turned positive for the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, taking the tally to 181. She said of the total Omicron patients, 42 have by now been discharged from hospitals and are back home. "While there are 875 vaccination centres for those above aged 18, for those in the 15 to 18 age group 551 centres have been opened. By now 98 per cent of the people above aged 18 have taken their first dose, while 80 per cent have got both the doses," said George. Omicron cases continue to rise in Kerala; reports 29 fresh new cases

With 16,866 new coronavirus infections being reported in a day, <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 4,39,05,621, while the daily positivity rate crossed 7 per cent again after a gap of 168 days, according to the <keyword id="83655" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="union-health-ministry" source="Orion">Union Health Ministry</keyword> data updated on Monday. The active cases have declined to 1,50,877, while the death toll has climbed to 5,26,074 with 41 new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am stated. The active cases comprises 0.34 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.46 per cent, the <keyword id="46535" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="health-ministry" source="Orion">health ministry</keyword> said. A decrease of 1,323 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours. The daily positivity rate was recorded at 7.03 per cent. The weekly positivity rate was 4.49 per cent, according to the health ministry. Totally, 87.27 crore tests have been carried out with 2,39,751 tests being conducted in a span of 24 hours. The number of recoveries surged to 4,32,28,670, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.20 per cent. According to the ministry, 202.17 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered in the country so far under the nationwide vaccination drive. India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19. India crossed the grim milestone of two crore on May 4, three crore on June 23 last year and four crore on January 25 this year. India's positivity rate crosses 7% again after an almost 3-month gap

Brazil leads the chart with 91,097 cases recorded in the last 24 hours. India recorded 81,466 new <keyword id="1754604" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">Coronavirus</keyword> cases in the last 24 hours. About 77,718 new cases were reported in the US on April 1. India has been witnessing a spike in cases since the last three weeks. India recorded its first Coronavirus case on January 30 last year and since then, a <keyword id="54821" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="total">total</keyword> of 1,23,03,131 people have been infected. In the US, the first case was found on January 22 and has now surged to 30,538,427, respectively. However, in terms of daily numbers, India is the third worst-hit country after the US and Brazil. Within the country, <keyword id="13126" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword> is the worst-hit state. If the total deaths are considered, India is at the fourth position after the US, Brazil and Mexico. About 469 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total toll to 1,62,927. Maharashtra has reported the highest daily new cases at 43,183. India's total active caseload has reached 6,14,696. It now comprises 5 per cent of the country's total positive cases. Five states -- Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, <keyword id="28504" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala">Kerala</keyword> and Punjab -- cumulatively account for 77.91 per cent of the total active cases in the country. Maharashtra alone accounts for nearly 60 per cent (59.84 per cent) of the total active caseload of the country. India's cumulative recoveries stand at 1,15,25,039 today. The national Recovery Rate is 93.68 per cent. A total of 50,356 recoveries were registered in the last 24 hours. Recently, NITI Aayog member V.K. Paul said that the current situation of the surge in coronavirus cases in the country is going from "bad to worse" and the trends show that the virus is still very active. India overtakes US, becomes the country with second-highest daily COVID-19 cases in the world

On the innovation map, India has 0.16 score. Meanwhile, the United States of America tops the list followed by Canada and Estonia. The US has a score of 4.28. “The first run of the rankings reveals an interesting insight that some of the cities that have been badly hit by the crisis such as New York, Milan, Paris, London, Beijing, and Barcelona, are the ones that have been mostly over-performing in the charts. Since late March, more and more organizations have been turning their businesses around to support the government during the coronavirus pandemic. In his most recent speech, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also urged scientists and researchers to come forward with innovative solutions to deal with the coronavirus. While factories have started producing masks, testing kits and PPE kits, startups have pivoted to build a use case during the coronavirus pandemic. The first Made in India testing kit from Pune based startup MyLabs also recently received commercial approval. India’s top VCs – Sequoia India, Matrix Partners, SAIF Partners, Lightspeed Ventures, Kalaari Capital, Accel, Chiratae Ventures, Omidyar Network and Nexus Partners along with several startup founders, launched a ₹100 crore grant to fund ideas that will lead the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. In Delhi, 24 people have tested positive for the virus. In neighboring states, Uttar Pradesh has placed 50 people under quarantine in the Jaunpur district and 125 people have been tracked down in Haryana. In Punjab, nine people reportedly attended the religious congregation. So far 1,034 people have been evacuated from the area and sent to various locations. The Ministry of External Affairs issued the tourist visas for foreigners who wished to take part in the Tablighi Jamaat activities. The Delhi government and Delhi police were tasked with ensuring that their order should have been followed through. In fact, the Hazrat Nizamuddin Police Station is right next to the Nizamuddin Markaz. Delhi government claims that the gathering was a criminal act. The congregation should have dispersed once the the directive prohibiting public gathering under the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897 and the Delhi Epidemic Diseases COVID-19 Regulation, 2020 was in place. However once the the announcement was made, the people at Nizammudin Markaz did not evacuate to implement social distancing. It was on March 23, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Janata Curfew, that around 1,500 people finally left the premises. A day later, the nationwide lockdown was put into place for the next 21 days. Adhering the the new regulations, the Nizamuddin Police reportedly asked the people who were still at the Markaz to leave on March 24. However, nearly 1,000 people continued to stay put despite the lockdown orders. A day later, on March 25, a medical team finally visits the building — isolating those who are suspected of having Coronavirus in an empty hall within the Markaz. Only then do the Jamaat officials go the authorities to file an application for passes in order to vacate the area. According to the deputy chairman of the SDMC standing committee, Rajpal Singh, the Markaz building is an unauthorised construction. A screening camp has been established to keep track of any individual who exhibits symptoms of Coronavirus. Delhi's Nizamuddin becomes the biggest hotspot of Coronavirus in India

Thiruvananthapuram, <keyword id="28504" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala" source="Orion">Kerala</keyword> Chief Minister <keyword id="6356705" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pinarayi-Vijayan" source="Orion">Pinarayi Vijayan</keyword> on Friday said the state government aims to complete the first dose of <keyword id="54639" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vaccination" source="Orion">vaccination</keyword> to all above 18 years by September 30. Vijayan said till now, 78.03 per cent of the population above 18 years received the first dose of vaccination, while 30.16 per cent received both doses. The Chief Minister, while addressing the press after a COVID-19 evaluation meeting, said only two per cent of the active cases during September 3-9 in the state required oxygen beds and only one per cent got admitted to ICUs. Vijayan said 93 per cent of people above 45 years received the first dose of vaccine while 50 per cent received the second dose too. "During the period between September 3 to 9, there was an average of 2,42,278 active cases in the state of which only two per cent required oxygen beds and one one per cent got admitted in the ICUs," he said. Vijayan told the media that antigen tests will be conducted only for the purpose of medical treatment in the districts where 80 per cent of the population have been vaccinated with the first dose. "In such districts, RTPCR tests will be used to detect the infection," he said. After analysing the COVID-19 situation, the state government has decided to impose stringent lockdown restrictions in areas where the weekly infection population ratio was above eight per cent. Until today the restrictions were in wards of local self government bodies with WIPR above seven per cent. Kerala today logged 25,010 new COVID-19 cases and 177 deaths, taking the caseload to 43,34,704 and the death toll to 22,303. Health minister Veena George said 1,51,317 samples were tested in the last 24 hours and the test positivity rate was 16.53 per cent. While PM Modi called for a 'janata curfew', the Kerala government implemented some serious steps

Thiruvananthapuram, Though no fresh COVID-19 case has been reported from Kerala since Friday evening, the total number of people under observation in the state has crossed 7,000. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has told officials that health screening should be started at all entry points in the state. As on Saturday, there are 19 corona-positive cases and all of them are stable and there are 7,677 people under observations at homes and hospitals. Speaking to the media after chairing a review meeting here in the state capital, Vijayan told the media that the screening process would be strengthened at airports, trains and at 24 road crossings bordering neighbouring Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. "At airports, the screening teams would be led by Superintendents of Police along with other professionals. Our medical teams will enter trains at the first station and check pasengers. Likewise, screening at 24 entry points on road will also see basic health protocols being followed," said Vijayan. He, however, ruled out closing down shopping malls in the state. "It has also been decided to set up corona care centres near four airports and all those who have to be isolated will have to spend their designated isolation time at such centres," said Vijayan. "With regards to the IT industry, it has been decided to quarantine all those who return from foreign assignments for 14 days at their homes," added Vijayan. As on Saturday afternoon, the following districts have coronavirus positive patients: as many as seven cases in Pathanamthitta, 4 in Kottayam, 3 each in Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram and one each in Thrissur and Kannur. In the state capital, where on Friday three fresh positive cases were reported, the general advisory that has come is: it's time that malls, beaches meeting places should be avoided. The state-owned indoor stadium has been closed. An Italian tourist who was at Varkala for the past two weeks, about 40 km from here, after testing positive has been moved to the Medical College Hospital. The beach destination is largely deserted. The resort where he was staying for the past two weeks has been closed. "Nine people who might have had direct contact with the Italian have been quarantined. We have also traced the route of the other two who turned positive. Things are in control, but we must be more cautious", said District Collector K. Gopalakrishnan. At Alappuzha two UK citizens who arrived from London and were under observation slipped out of the hospital last night. But they were found at the Kochi airport and were put under observation. At Pathanamthitta, where maximum positive cases have been registered, results of 12 suspects came out negative for the virus. "We have got 12 results today and all are negative. Even though this is a big relief, it's not the time to relax," said District Collector P.B. Nooh. At Kochi, on Saturday a flight arrived with 21 passengers from Italy. They were found healthy. They have been asked to remain confined to their homes for two weeks. At Thrissur, where the highest number of people are under observation (1,571) State Minister A.C. Moideen, who led a meeting of officials, said the good news is that 58 test reports that came today are negative. However the police found out a passenger on a luxury bus who came from Qatar. But that is not stopping researchers from burning midnight oil to find one. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is one of them and has recently given a nod to conduct clinical trials of plasma treatment. Researchers are hopeful that the therapy would be able to cure critically-ill patients. What is convalescent plasma treatment? <div type="image" title="olasma" msid="75077230" hostid="261"></div> Plasma treatment involves injecting the Covid-19 patient with the blood plasma of people who recovered from the infection. Those cured already have antibodies that drive the virus away. They can be used to do the same for another patient. Researches reveal that it can help boost the immune system of the infected. “What hyperimmune globulin does is it concentrates the antibodies in a recovered patient. You are essentially giving the new victim’s immune system a boost of antibodies to hopefully get them through the very difficult phase,” <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-health-hospital/chinese-doctors-using-plasma-therapy-on-coronavirus-who-says-very-valid-approach-idUSKBN20B1M6">said</a> Mike Ryan, head of WHO’s health emergencies programme. It is not a new concept. It was earlier used when the H1N1 influenza pandemic swept the world in 2009. It was also helpful in controlling measles, before the vaccines were discovered. It became the first state to use plasma treatment on Coronavirus patients. It was once the worst-hit state — and now stands fifth with 357 infections, as per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. As per directives, the donors will be those patients that recovered, with no signs of the infection for 2-3 weeks. <a href="https://theprint.in/health/india-ready-for-clinical-trial-of-plasma-treatment-for-critical-covid-19-patients/398816/">According to</a> Manoj Murhekar, director of the Indian Institute of Epidemiology, the treatment will not be used on patients with mild symptoms. “This will be for those who are on ventilators and under clinical trial mode, before being recommended for all patients,” he said. To begin with, Kerala is focussing on collecting plasma samples of recovered patients. “The current effort is not to transfuse the plasma in patients but to begin the process of drawing and storing the plasma from donors to keep it ready when the time comes,” the expert committee member <a href="https://theprint.in/health/india-ready-for-clinical-trial-of-plasma-treatment-for-critical-covid-19-patients/398816/">told</a> ThePrint. The state already started counselling the recovered patients for possible donations. India is replicating the model used by China and US <div type="image" title="plasma china" msid="75077212" hostid="261"></div> China and the US too have been using plasma treatment. China, which was first hit by the pandemic, has been using therapeutic products extracted from convalescent plasma to treat Covi-19 patients. Their blood was also checked to see if the donor had diseases like hepatitis B or C. Meanwhile, a recent research published in J<a href="http://v">ournal of the American Medical Association</a> and PNAS has shown that a single dose of donor blood plasma can help treat as many as 10 patients. It also said that the method can control symptoms, improve oxygen levels and accelerate recovery. In the US, the Food and Drug Administration also approved clinical trials of the convalescent plasma on critical patients.
