<ul><li>The first to set it off will be <keyword id="28504" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala">Kerala</keyword> Police who will soon use <keyword id="30939" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="facial-recognition">facial recognition</keyword> technology backed by <keyword id="6355999" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ai">AI</keyword>. </li><li>The AI technology can identify actions, objects and people in hundreds of hours of a video footage. </li><li>The technology will use state, national database for the purpose of tracking a criminal or finding missing persons.</li></ul> Artificial Intelligence-powered <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/kerala/facial-recognition-tech-to-aid-police/article24426750.ece">facial recognition</a> technology will soon become a part of the <keyword id="6712047" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Standard-Law-Enforcement-toolkit">Standard Law Enforcement toolkit</keyword> of the Kerala Police. The department’s cyber research facility, Cyberdome, has developed AI algorithms that will help local police scan hundreds of hours of video footage and hunt for a particular object or person. For example, “a person wearing black hat” or “number of yellow cars” on the road, over a certain time window. The technology can identify actions and can classify them as a fight, accident or crowd gathering. It can also trace objects and people in a video. This project is under the vigilance of State Police Chief Loknath Behera and IG Manoj Abraham. Earlier, after getting the required information from the victim, the police force used to search for a certain object or person manually, to solve the case or find a missing person. The whole process was and is exceedingly time consuming. However, the new technology is equipped to do the same ‘search’ quicker and more accurately. The new tech also enables the police to compare faces of the suspected law offenders to the department’s existing database of previously known offenders. It furthermore also plans to integrate the national database into the technology. This would include the information of civilians as well, which will be obtained from driving licences, passport records and other biometric documents. They also plan to configure the system for smarter and tighter security at airports, railway stations and urban hubs and use it to monitor ‘actions’ 24/7 and trigger an alert if a person or a vehicle behaves suspiciously. It is also being considered for enhancing VIP security. AI technology will also be useful in the quick detection of accidents, traffic situations, fire and other hazards. Furthermore, it will help enforcing traffic rules by using its ability to detect objects like helmets. If all goes well, <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> will be one of the first few countries to use AI for law enforcement. Last month, <a href="https://www.livemint.com/AI/DIh6fmR6croUJps6x7JW5K/Meet-Staqu-a-startup-helping-Indian-law-enforcement-agencie.html">Staqu</a>, a Gururam-based startup also helped Indian law enforcement agencies with AI technology via an app that offered criminal identity registration and tracking missing persons. The programme was used by the Punjab Police, under the Punjab <keyword id="107950" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="artificial-intelligence">Artificial Intelligence</keyword> System (PAIS).

India to use AI to track criminals, find missing persons

In a rather shocking incident, an official of the Indian Air Force was arrested by <keyword id="6358992" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Police">Delhi Police</keyword> in Punjab yesterday for working as Pakistan's aide. The officer, identified as Ranjith from Kerala, was found allegedly <keyword id="6392096" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Spying">spying</keyword> for Pakistan's intelligence agency, ISI. He was allegedly lured into espionage by a woman who he met through a social networking site. 

	He was posted at the Bathinda Air Force station close to the India-Pakistan border as a ground technician with access to details of aircraft deployment and positions.
 

	The official had been under surveillance for three months and was passing information about airfields to a woman in Jammu. He is 24 years old and has been with the IAF for nearly five years. The woman conduit is now being investigated.

Air Force man allegedly lured into spying for Pakistan's ISI

Asking security personnel to exercise control and discipline while using <keyword id="6354632" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Social-media">social media</keyword>, Union <keyword id="6000" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Home-Minister">Home Minister</keyword> <keyword id="6355121" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Rajnath-Singh">Rajnath Singh</keyword> today said the police force should use the medium to its advantage and connect with people. 
 
He also underscored the importance for police to reduce the trust deficit with local communities. 
 
Inaugurating the National Community Policing Conclave-2016 at nearby Kovalam, Singh said it was imperative for police to use the full power of social media to its its advantage. They should use it as an instrument to connect with people. 
 
"Social media is a power to police. They should use it to communicate with people," he said, adding that however, security personnel should use it with control and discipline. 
 
"It is very important for the police to bridge the trust deficit that exists between the police and local communities. I always believe that the efficacy of any police force lies in its relationship and engagement with the local community," he said. 
 
The Home Minister said challenges before police were multifarious and changing due to increasing diversity and complexity of crimes on the one hand and rising public expectations on the other. 
 
Besides the law and order issues, terrorism was also a cause of grave concern, the minister said 
 "Apart from global terrorism, the social changes brought about by the <keyword id="6357247" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Internet">Internet</keyword> and social media have posed huge policing challenges and have completely changed the way in which policing is done," he said. 
 
Singh said while on the one hand newer technologies have enabled law enforcement agencies handle new age crimes and criminals, on the other, it has "hugely empowered" the criminals as well. 
 
"Today, anyone sitting anywhere in the world can commit a crime anywhere in the world can commit a crime anywhere in the world with impunity and anonymity.So the question arises in the present day technology-driven world, 
 
"While community policing should be the guiding principle of our police forces, I must say that building relationships should be our prime focus." 
 
"I am of the firm opinion that community policing should be institutionalized in our policing system." 
 
"A nationwide action plan for community policing and community contact needs to be formulated," he said. 
 Speaking on the occasion, State Home Minister <keyword id="72604" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ramesh-Chennithala">Ramesh Chennithala</keyword> said Community Policy introduced in Kerala eight years ago had proved to be a great success. 
 
"It received full support from the people', he said. 
 
The system had also helped reduce the gulf between police and people', he claimed.

The controversy over the breaking of the <keyword id="6384180" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="sabarimala">Sabarimala</keyword> <keyword id="6355287" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Temple">temple</keyword>'s culture and tradition continues to rage and is even now the most discussed election issue in Kerala as seen from the statements of various top political leaders, who came to cast their votes on Tuesday. The <keyword id="6930180" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sabarimala-temple-issue">Sabarimala temple issue</keyword> was raised by Sukumaran Nair, general secretary of the powerful Hindu Nair community's social and cultural organisation -- <keyword id="378621" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nair-Service-Society">Nair Service Society</keyword>. Soon after casting his vote at Changnacherry in Kottayam district, Nair said what he could sense is that the people in the state want a change in governance and want an outfit which will uphold social justice and secular credentials. "The Sabarimala temple issue continues to rage as believers are angry," said Nair. It was in 2018 that the apex court ruled that the temple should be open to all women irrespective of the age group as until then the temple tradition was that no women in the age group 10 to 50 be allowed entry. Following the verdict, the Vijayan-led government floated a renaissance movement, much to the anguish of the believers of Lord Ayyappa, the deity at the Sabarimala temple, and even went to the extent of providing security to two activist women to pray at the temple by providing <keyword id="6369752" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Police-Security">police security</keyword>. The temple town then became a battle ground after believers in large members resisted attempts by the police to take women in the hitherto banned age group. This temple issue came as a setback for Vijayan in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls when he won only one of the 20 Lok Sabha seats in Kerala. On Tuesday, after casting his vote at Kannur, Vijayan when asked about Nair's Sabarimala temple issue said, "it's not just Ayyappan alone, all God's are supporting the Left," said Vijayan, who was accompanied by his wife Kamala Vijayan. And then came statements from the Congress leaders who condemned this sudden U-turn by Vijayan. Reacting to Vijayan's sudden love for Lord Ayyappan, Chennithala laughed and said it was strange to hear an atheist's sudden love for Ayyappan. "Vijayan will get the wrath of Ayyappan as he destroyed the sanctity of the famed Sabarimala temple," said Chennithala. Two time former Congress Chief Minister <keyword id="137100" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Oommen-Chandy">Oommen Chandy</keyword> said Vijayan's statement will be taken with a pinch of salt by the people as it has no sum or substance. "The first thing he did was to file a fresh affidavit and it was done after withdrawing our affidavit, and it was clear that he was against the existing traditions of the temple. When the apex court verdict came, he said he will abide by the verdict. Soon he led a renaissance movement and when no women came to visit the temple, police forcefully took two women to the temple and the culture and traditions were broken. And on election day Vijayan has made a huge U-turn and this would be dismissed by every devotee as nothing but a bluff," said Chandy and added the Congress-led <keyword id="6361745" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="udf">UDF</keyword> will win a resounding victory.
