<keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s first woman judge of the <keyword id="6354977" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="supreme-court" source="Orion">Supreme Court</keyword> <keyword id="77775" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fathima-Beevi" source="Orion">Fathima Beevi</keyword> breathed her last at a private hospital at Kollam on Thursday. She was 96-years-old and was in hospital for a while. Beevi, who was living at her home in Pathanamthitta after retirement, has a number of firsts to her name. Apart from being the first woman judge of the apex court she was the first Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission and the first Muslim female Governor (<keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword>). Incidentally Beevi enrolled herself as an advocate in 1950 and began her career in the lower judiciary in Kerala. Beevi was appointed as a Munsiff in the Kerala Sub-ordinate Judicial Services in May 1958. She was promoted as the Sub-ordinate Judge in 1968, as the Chief <keyword id="169412" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="judicial-magistrate" source="Orion">Judicial Magistrate</keyword> in 1972 and as District and Sessions Judge in 1974. Beevi was further appointed the Judicial Member of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal in January 1980 before being elevated to the <keyword id="6355392" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="high-court" source="Orion">High Court</keyword> as a Judge on August 4, 1983. Beevi became permanent Judge of the High Court on May 14, 1984. She retired as the Judge of the High Court on April 29, 1989 but was further elevated to the Supreme Court as a Judge on October 6, 1989 where she retired on April 29, 1992. Beevi later went on to become the Governor of Tamil Nadu on January 25, 1997 and she quit in 2001 following a decision of the Union Government recommending to the President to recall her. India's first woman judge of Supreme Court Fathima Beevi passes away at 96

The <keyword id="6354977" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="supreme-court" source="Orion">Supreme Court</keyword> will hear on May 15 a plea against the <keyword id="28504" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="kerala" source="Orion">Kerala</keyword> High Court order refusing to stay the release of the controversial multilingual film "The Kerala Story". Senior advocate Kapil Sibal on Tuesday mentioned the matter for urgent listing before a bench comprising Chief Justice <keyword id="445662" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="d-y-chandrachud" source="Orion">D Y Chandrachud</keyword> and Justice <keyword id="3330333" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="p-s-narasimha" source="Orion">P S Narasimha</keyword>. When the bench inquired whether the high court has passed an order in the matter, Sibal said it has refused to stay the release of film. "We will keep it on Monday (May 15)," the bench said. On May 5, the high court refused to stay the release of the movie and said the trailer does not contain anything offensive to any particular community as a whole. The high court noted the producers' submission that they do not intend to retain an "offending teaser" which contained a statement that "32,000 women" from Kerala were converted and joined a terrorist organisation. It said the <keyword id="388113" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="central-board-of-film-certification" source="Orion">Central Board of Film Certification</keyword> (CBFC) has examined the movie and found it suitable for public exhibition. The high court also noted that the producers have published a disclaimer along with the movie which specifically says it is fictionalised and a dramatised version of events and that the film doesn't claim accuracy or factuality of historic events. "The Kerala Story" starring Adah Sharma was released in cinemas on Friday. SC to hear on May 15 plea against HC order on 'The Kerala Story'

<ul><li>The <keyword id="6357505" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala-high-court">Kerala High Court</keyword> today broke a barrier as it ruled that a <keyword id="3881175" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="transgender-person">transgender person</keyword> can join the <keyword id="6363208" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-cadet-corps">National Cadet Corps</keyword>.</li><li><keyword id="10363494" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hina-Haneefa">Hina Haneefa</keyword>, a 22-year old transwoman, had moved the Kerala High Court for her right to be a part of the <keyword id="50583" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NCC">NCC</keyword>.</li><li>The court said that the enrolment criteria under Section 6 of the National Cadet Corps Act, 1948 which excludes admission of transgender persons to Corps should be amended.</li></ul>Hina Haneefa, a transgender who identifies herself as a woman, must be happy today. The Kerala High Court today broke a barrier as it ruled that a transgender person can join the National Cadet Corps, going beyong the previous rule of being either a male or female person to join the youth wing of the Armed Forces. Haneefa, the 22-year old transwoman had moved the Kerala High Court for her right to be a part of the NCC. Haneefa had joined the NCC when she was 13, as a ‘boy’ the gender assigned to her at birth. However, since then, she has undergone transformational surgeries. “Gender should not be a factor for admission to the corps,” Haneefa had told <a href="https://www.thequint.com/neon/gender/transwoman-from-kerala-challenges-ministry-of-defence">the Quint</a> in an interview earlier. “Petitioner is entitled to enrollment in the NCC Senior Girls Division and rejection of request of petitioner for such enrolment is completely unsustainable,” said Justice Sivaraman during the order. Transgender person can join the National Cadet Corps, rules Kerala High Court

Kerala High Court issues notice to central government over the ‘chilling effects’ of India’s new IT Rules for digital news

Kohli, Thamanna and Varghese are brand ambassadors of online rummy and hence the notice. The high court has also issued notices to the state government and called for its response on the same. The petitioner had complained to the high court that several people have lost their lives in the country after losing huge amounts of money by playing the online game and that it should be banned. Vineeth, 27, had committed suicide at Kuttichal in Thiruvananthapuram a fortnight ago. He had lost Rs 21 lakh. Sajesh, 32, who had lost a huge amount playing online rummy told <keyword id="105681" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IANS">IANS</keyword>: "The intervention of the honourable High court is welcome as I know that several people have lost huge amount of money playing this online game and I myself have lost more than Rs 6 lakh. I had to seek professional medical help to come out of this addiction and the court must ban this game in India."

Kochi, Apr 21 () The Kerala High Court on Tuesdaytook potshots at the state government's IT contract with a USfirm for processing data related to COVID-19 patients anddirected it to file a statement by April 24 on the details ofthe deal. Considering a plea seeking quashing of the stategovernment's contract with the US-based IT firm Sprinklr, theHigh Court sought to know as to why foreign jurisdiction wasincluded as a clause in the deal for adjudication of possibledisputes. Expressing concern over the confidentiality of thecitizen's data processed by a third party, a division benchcomprising Justices Devan Ramachandran and T R Ravi alsosought to know why the sanction of the law department was nottaken before finalising the agreement. The court hailed the state government's fightagainst the pandemic but said it was concerned about the dataconfidentiality. It also directed the government to explainthe reason for engaging a foreign firm for such works whenthere are government IT wings to do such jobs. Noting that a citizen is not privy to the dealsigned between the state government and the foreign company,the court observed that the state government will be held asresponsible, if the firm misused the data. The court also asked why the contract was notreferred to the law department before signing it. When state government counsel said the datacollected did not constitute sensitive personal information,the bench said data confidentiality in the present world isthe most important. The state government said the agreement with theSprinklr has safeguards for data protection in accordancewith the standard practices of software as a service models. In his plea, petitioner Balu Gopalakrishnansaid he was concerned about the manner in which the dataregarding the COVID19 patients in the state are collected,stored, analysed and retrieved. The state government had entered into acontract with the IT company based out of the US, owned by anon resident Keralite, wherein the data of suspected andactual patients of the COVID-19 virus will be collectedusing government machinery and is uploaded to the foreignfirm's web server on a daily basis. The IT company in turn will provide actual datato the State machinery after analysis, for betterunderstanding and treatment of the pandemic. The petitioner said only concern is whetherthe data stored in the web server of company is safe andwhether it can be used by the company for monetary gains. "Even if there is a non-disclosure agreementbetween the parties, how can a violation of the agreement bepenaly enforced upon a foreign company and whether it will beeffective. The IT department of the state cannot feignignorance of the perils of data theft and answer questionsflimsily and callously," the petitoner said. More than 1.5 lakh sensitive medical informationof the COVID-19 patients are uploaded on a daily basis, tilltoday, the petitioner alleged. Two policemen were injured in the stone pelting, an officer from Palakkad Town North police station said and added that an FIR was lodged the same day and on Monday 22 persons were arrested in the case. "They will be produced in court today," the officer said. He said there was no permission obtained for carrying out the procession which was using unauthorised sound and speaker systems to play music and that coupled with the large number of fans led to the road being blocked and traffic movement disrupted. When the procession organisers were asked by police to move away in view of the road being blocked, they got into an argument with the officers and then started pelting stones. "Two officers were injured. Their health is stable now," he said. On the flip side, a prominent Kerala-based businessman -- Boby Chemmanur -- decided to travel to Qatar with a golden statue of Maradona which commemorates the legendary footballer's 'Hand of God' goal. His journey, along with a group of persons from all walks of life, began on Monday afternoon from Thiruvananthapuram and it is expected to traverse through Kerala, Karnataka and <keyword id="826" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="goa" source="Orion">Goa</keyword> to reach Mumbai from where they will fly to Qatar. The house is presently registered in our name, but we will ensure it is accessible to all," he added. The public advisory states: "Therefore advocates, general public and litigants are requested to adhere to the guidelines/advisory issued by the Govt of NCT of Delhi and avoid unnecessary overcrowding in the court premises."
