The Kerala Co-operative <keyword id="170372" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="milk-marketing-federation" source="Orion">Milk Marketing Federation</keyword>, or <keyword id="251235" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="milma" source="Orion">Milma</keyword>, on Thursday announced its decision to hike prices of milk by Rs 6 per litre which will come into effect from December 1. Currently, the cost of a litre of milk in the state is Rs 46. The price hike comes three years after Milma had announced an increase of Rs 4 per litre in 2019. "That time, 83.75 per cent (Rs 3.35) of the additional amount went to the farmers. That proportion will continue this time which means Rs 5.025 of the Rs 6 will go to the farmer," said Chairman of the Federation, K.S. <keyword id="9128" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mani" source="Orion">Mani</keyword>. The latest decision comes after a Milma-appointed panel comprising experts from the state's veterinary and agriculture universities conducted a study on expenses incurred by dairy farmers. In its interim report submitted last week, the committee said that the farmers suffer an estimated loss of Rs 8.57 per litre of milk. Subsequently, the Milma Director Board convened a meeting and found that a price hike was inevitable, the Chairman said. "Though Milma is authorised to increase the price, the Board's decision was discussed with the state government and a suitable hike was finalised," he added. Along with a fresh hike in procurement prices, the milk cooperatives and distributors will each get 5.75 per cent of the new hiked amount, while 0.75 per cent of the amount will go to the Dairy Farmers Welfare Fund Board. Milma will get 3.50 per cent of the increased amount even as 0.50 per cent has been earmarked for the <keyword id="15606825" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="plastic-elimination-fund" source="Orion">Plastic Elimination Fund</keyword>. Besides the rise in the cooperative federation's milk procurement prices, the government has been giving various subsidies to the farmers. The present hike in the milk procurement price will benefit the milk producers, wooing more of them to join the dairy sector, Mani said. Milk prices hiked in Kerala by Rs 6 per litre

African <keyword id="43489" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Swine-flu" source="Orion">swine flu</keyword> cases have resurfaced in <keyword id="28504" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kerala" source="Orion">Kerala</keyword>'s <keyword id="461419" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="wayanad" source="Orion">Wayanad</keyword> district and for the first time in the neighbouring <keyword id="6357542" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kannur" source="Orion">Kannur</keyword>. The first case was reported in Wayanad in the last week of July following which over 300 pigs was culled in two farms. This morning, fresh cases was reported in Wayanad, where 15 pigs suddenly died. Tests confirmed African swine flu. With more cases being reported in a Kannur's pig farm, around 200 pigs will be culled. Authorities have promised adeqate compensation to the affetced farmers. <ul><li>The CPI(M) has proposed the construction of a 5.7km bypass through a paddy field belt in Keezhattur.</li><li>The proposal is expected to involve the reclamation of around 250 acres of land, a significant portion of which is paddy fields.</li><li>Environmental conservation and the protection of paddy fields were key components of the the party’s election manifesto in 2016.</li></ul> A fortnight after its <keyword id="45092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="farmers">farmers</keyword> organising wing, the All-India Kisan Sabha, led a successful march in Maharashtra, the <keyword id="71501" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Communist">Communist</keyword> Party of India (Marxist) finds itself on the other side of the line in Kerala- the state it governs as part of the Left Democratic Front (LDF). The CPI(M) has proposed the construction of a 5.7km bypass through a paddy field belt in Keezhattur, a CPI(M)-stronghold in the district of Kannur. The bypass off NH 66, which has been in the works since 2003, is expected to result in the reclamation of around 250 acres of land, a significant portion of which is paddy fields. The bypass proposal has led to a spate of protests by farmers as it will affect paddy cultivation. Contradicting its own manifesto In most cases, the CPI(M)’s proposal would be a defensible political move, given that the goal here is infrastructure development. However, the party is said to be backtracking on a previous stance it took as part of the Opposition in 2015, wherein it opposed a plan by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to build over the paddy fields due to environmental reasons. Infact, environmental conservation and the protection of paddy fields were key components of the LDF’s <a href="http://cpim.org/5-state-elections-2016/.../kerala_ldf_manifesto_2016-english_version.doc">election manifesto</a> in 2016. The manifesto stated:- “Paddy fields all through the state will be declared protected paddy areas, while protecting the rights of their owners.”

 Paddy cultivation is an important source of income in the region. Furthermore, the Keezhattur wetlands and paddy fields sustain the region’s water table, and hence the construction of the highway is expected to cut off the supply of water for the district’s farmers and residents. The CPI(M)’s proposal contradicts the pledges of its manifesto. It also strikes at the core of its support base- farmers. As a result, a number of divisions between the party’s leaders and workers have been exposed in the ensuing fallout. Another farmers march The agitation began in <a href="http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/kerala/cpim-leadership-workers-differ-on-bypass-project/article19701290.ece">September 2017,</a> when the bypass plan was mooted. A number of CPI(M) cadres and supporters formed a group called Vayal Kilikal, which translates into “birds of the paddy field”. The group, which is led by Suresh Keezhattoor, a former party worker, staged a hunger strike before being placated by the government. The protests were restarted again this month after the NHAI started surveying the land for acquisition purposes. On March 25th, clearly inspired by their counterparts in Maharashtra, the group commenced a peaceful march from the town of Taliparamba to Keezhattur in response to a CPI(M)-led march the previous day. They were joined by environmental activists and notably, BJP politicians. Hundreds of people were reported to have participated in the march.

 As things stand, the chief minister of <keyword id="28504" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala">Kerala</keyword>, Pinarayi Vijayan, is set to meet Nitin Gadkari, the Union minister for transport and highways, later this week to discuss the issue. While an elevated highway has been proposed as an alternative to the bypass, it has been struck down by the Vayal Kilikal. The unrest against the CPI(M) is growing. A longer march from Keezhattur to the state capital Thiruvananthapuram is slated for early April. Hopefully, a settlement will be reached.

The “farmer-friendly” CPI(M)'s proposed bypass plan in Kerala contradicts its 2016 election manifesto

A large number of <keyword id="8750874" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="millenial-farmers">millenial farmers</keyword> in villages around Nashik district of Maharashtra are making more money from alternative jobs like electrician, plumbing and fabrication than from farming itself. Most of these farmers are earning between Rs 7,000-15,000 per month from alternative jobs in construction-affiliated industry, which they said is "good enough money" to support their agriculture-dependent families. These millenial farmers, who are mostly educated till 12th standard, are gradually emerging as talented professionals, thanks to the vocational skill training intervention by PNB Housing Finance Ltd (PNBHF) as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative implemented with the support of Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Associations of India (CREDAI) and Vivekananda Institute at Nashik. Looking at the uncertainty in agriculture, a matric-passed farmer Sagar Nivruthi Bodke (22 years), who assists his family in a 2.5-acre farm land located at Tadwade village in Trimbakeshwar Taluk, took up the 45-day free training course on fabrication at Vivekananda Institute last year. "There is not much income from agriculture. Both monsoon and markets are unpredictable. Despite efforts of entire family, the return from a piece of farm land is very low. Youth like me cannot even think of asking salary for my share of work," Bodke told . Stating that farming is becoming difficult with increased water woes in Trimbakeshwar, he said an alternative job like fabrication comes handy to sustain during off season. "Now, I have my own work. I earn Rs 14,000 to Rs 15,000 per month. My family is happy that I earn from this new job and at the same time help them in agriculture activities," he said, adding that he was able to learn fast as the course syllabus was more on practical knowledge than theory. Sharing a similar story, 20-year old Abhishek Mohan Daghar said he has become a certified electrician after getting the training at the institute and been working with a building contractor for last three months. "I am getting Rs 7,000 per month, which is not bad for a 12th Class fail youth. We have 5 acres of farm land and I help my father in agriculture and also doing electrician job," Daghar said and added that he was ready to join a company if he was offered better salary. There are many millenial farmers like Bodke and Daghar in and around Nashik who have either become entrepreneurs or got placed in companies after the training. The objective of the intervention, PNBHF Chief People Officer Anshul Bhargava said, is constantly build inroads for upgrading skills of construction workers and creating a conducive environment for them. The purpose is to improve the socio-economic condition of this community. Now, the demand for such courses is increasing not only among millenial farmers but also from youth belonging to economically weaker groups who want to acquire new skills to find job opportunities. For instance, 21-year old Vinayak Rawat (12th class pass) after the training course got placement as electrician at Chinese home appliance giant Haier in Nashik and is earning as much as Rs 15,000 per month. "I did the course in June-July 2019 and now working with Haier. My salary is Rs 15,000 per month. Gradually I started earning more money because of incentive given on marketing of the company's products," Rawat said, adding that additional skills that were taught at the training helped him deal with customers, market the company's products and earn incentives. Under this partnership, CREDAI President Satish Magar said it has been able to directly reach out to 40,000 unemployed youth from underprivileged backgrounds, helping them access entry levels job opportunities in construction affiliated industries. Since many of the existing plumbers, electricians and fabricators have picked up skills on job and are not trained at all, Vivekanand Institute Executive Officer Sandip Kuyate said, "Such courses help supply of trained workers who can provide better services keeping safety on priority." "Along with the course, we teach additional basic skills like computer, soft skills, entrepreneur development skill, financial literacy and career counselling," he said, adding that such skills give them confidence to deal with customers. As per the latest data, PNBHF has trained over 1,500 youth in electrician, plumbing and fabrication skills in the last three years in Nashik district alone, while a total 41,744 youth between 2015-16 and 2019-20 across India. There is 70-75 per cent placement after the training. Besides Maharashtra, PNBHF is offering such training courses in 10 states -- Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Orrisa. The certificate courses are recognised globally as it is accredited by the National Skill Development Council (NSDC) and Construction Skill Development Council Of India (CSDC). The courses are offered free of cost to people belonging to economically weaker sections. PNBHF is investing Rs 8,000 per candidate for the training and aims to train 13,000 persons this fiscal. Many students travel 20-25 km from Nashik city to attend classes and Vivekananda Institute is also offering hostel and meal facility here. Millenial farmers making more money from alternative jobs than farming

A string of organic coffee outlets are going to dot India soon as a farmers' cooperative based in Kottayam that cultivate organic crop has plans to open coffee shops across the country. 
 Manarcadu Social Service Society (Mass) is expected to come up with their <keyword id="3302878" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cafe-de-Monde">Cafe de Monde</keyword> in a few months from Kerala and the first one will come up in Kochi. 
 After coffee, the cooperative is likely to start selling <keyword id="414343" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Organic-fruits">organic fruits</keyword> and vegetables cultivated by it through these shops only. 
 
Reportedly, Mass, which was incorporated in 2001, has over 5000 farmers under its wings who cultivate in 3100 hectares spread over 18 villages. It exports coffee, cocoa and spices to Europe through the company Plantrich Agritech Pvt. Ltd. 
 
The society annually produces 4000 tonnes of spices, 6500 tonnes of cocoa, 2600 tonnes of coffee and 1870 tonnes of fruits. It also grows organic coffee in Tamil Nadu.
