<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="337466" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Aurora">Aurora</keyword> and truck maker Paccar said Tuesday they have inked a deal to develop self-driving semi trucks. </li><li>The Amazon-backed autonomous vehicle startup has long said its first product would be a truck. </li><li>Aurora's rivals have also teamed up with truck makers recently as the driverless truck race heats up.</li></ul><p>Autonomous vehicle startup Aurora on Tuesday <a href="https://aurora.tech/blog/aurora-is-teaming-up-with-paccar-to-deploy-self-driving-trucks">announced</a> a key partnership that brings it closer to its goal of deploying self-driving trucks. </p><p>The Amazon-backed firm is teaming up with Paccar, a major truck manufacturer that builds light-, medium-, and heavy-duty trucks under well-known nameplates including Peterbilt and Kenworth.</p><p>Under the new agreement, the two companies will develop, test, and sell vehicles that marry Aurora's autonomous-driving tech with Paccar's vehicles, Aurora said. </p><p>"We have entered into a strategic partnership with Paccar that combines their considerable expertise in heavy-duty truck development, manufacturing, and sales with our deep understanding of autonomous vehicle technology to bring a safe, efficient self-driving product to market quickly and deploy it broadly," Sterling Anderson, Aurora's co-founder,  said in a <a href="https://aurora.tech/blog/aurora-is-teaming-up-with-paccar-to-deploy-self-driving-trucks">blog post</a>. </p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rising-stars-autonomous-vehicles-waymo-aurora-cruise-nuro-2020-12?r=tl-sub">Meet 2021's rising stars of self-driving vehicles from companies like Waymo, Aurora, and Cruise</a></em></p><p>Aurora and Paccar engineers will jointly develop "driverless-capable" trucks based on the Peterbilt 579 and Kenworth T680, the startup said. The two firms will also work together to create "an expansive commercialization plan for the deployment of these trucks at scale over the next few years," Anderson said. </p><p>Shares of Paccar rose more than 5% in late trading Tuesday after the deal was announced. </p><p>Aurora has long said that its first commercial product will be in <keyword id="996559" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Trucking">trucking</keyword>, where it says the market is largest and the unit economics are most favorable. Automated driving is also easier to achieve on highways - as opposed to city streets - where trucks can travel for hours at a time in predictable traffic. </p><p>But <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aurora-ceo-chris-urmson-explains-buying-uber-atg-self-driving-2020-12">the company</a> is hardly the only firm looking to carve out a slice of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-uber-vcs-investing-trucking-self-driving-2020-2">future autonomous trucking market</a>, nor is it alone in enlisting a manufacturing partner to help it do so. </p><p>Alphabet's Waymo has tested its driverless, class-8 trucks in several states and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/waymo-daimler-partner-to-make-self-driving-trucks-2020-10">announced plans</a> last year to develop vehicles with Daimler, which has an autonomous big rig program of its own. TuSimple said in July that it is <a href="https://news.navistar.com/2020-07-15-Navistar-and-TuSimple-Partner-to-Bring-Autonomous-Trucks-to-Market-Navistar-Invests-in-Autonomous-Trucking-Company">joining forces</a> with US truck manufacturer Navistar, with production targeted to begin in 2024. </p><p><keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news">News</keyword> of the agreement comes weeks after Aurora announced it would <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-sells-self-driving-car-unit-aurora-atg-deal-2020-12">acquire Uber's self-driving taxi business</a> in December. Volvo and Kenworth are manufacturing the tractors.&#xa0;</p><p>It's not known how many trucks are being made or when they'll be released. But, across the country, truckers said they've spotted these tractors at Volvo and Kenworth.</p><p>Amazon confirmed the news, and referenced an April 15 video posted on Twitter by Dave Clark, Amazon senior vice president of operations. The video shows a Volvo and Kenworth tractor with an Amazon-branded trailer:&#xa0;</p><p>A Kenworth spokesperson declined to comment. Volvo did not respond to Business Insider's requests for comment.</p><p>Amazon has signaled its interest to become a logistics giant. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-vehicles-used-deliver-packages-2019-7">In the span of several years,</a> the retail giant has amassed dozens of cargo jets, around 10,000 truck trailers, a network of ocean freighters, and thousands of last-mile delivery vans. Most recently, Amazon announced a massive order of 100,000 electricity delivery vans <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-reportedly-orders-electric-vans-from-rivian-2019-9">in Sept.</a></p><p>"They've already got branded airplanes. they've got a last-mile delivery network that's growing they've got branded trailers - one of the only things left is tractors," Cathy Morrow Roberson, founder of consulting firm Logistics Trends &amp; Insights, told Business Insider. XPO Logistics, for instance, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-xpo-logistics-earnings-deliveries-2019-2">announced in Feb.</a> that its largest customer was moving away from outsourcing to XPO, and the customer's in-housing would ultimately slash $600 million in expected revenues. (Analysts universally agree that the customer was Amazon, though XPO has not publicly stated such.)</p><p>A $402 million trucking company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bankrupt-trucker-new-england-amazon-reliance-2019-2">went under in February</a>, a bankruptcy that analysts said was partially because of Amazon's in-housing moves.&#xa0;</p><p>"They've learned from others, they've pulled their business from them, and they're going to do it on their own now," Roberson said. "That's just how they go."</p><h2>Amazon may be hiring its own troop of truckers</h2><p>The branded tractors may be a sign that Amazon is looking to directly employ truck drivers. SJ Consulting Group's principal consultant Satish Jindel said acquiring branded tractors is very uncommon unless the company is planning to hire truckers. Walmart, for instance, has some 8,600 company drivers driving goods in its branded tractor-trailers.&#xa0;</p><p>"The only time companies use branded tractors is if they're used by their own employee drivers," Jindel told Business Insider. "This is probably an indication that Amazon will have company drivers as opposed to independent drivers."</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5d543451cd978440784604eb-1667/amazon%20last%20mile%20delivery%20share.png" border="0" alt="amazon last mile delivery share" data-mce-source="Rakuten Intelligence; Andy Kiersz/Business Insider" /></div></div></div><p>Some truck drivers don't presently have a positive view on Amazon, which launched an in-house brokerage service this year.&#xa0;</p><p>According to a <a href="https://www.freightwaves.com/news/freightwaves-research-amazons-new-online-freight-platform-is-viewed-negatively-by-8-of-10-carriers-and-freight-brokers">report from FreightWaves</a>, Amazon's rates in the spot market - which is when&#xa0;retailers and manufacturers buy trucking capacity as they need it, rather than through a contract - are on average 18.4% lower than rates posted on <a href="https://www.dat.com/">DAT</a>, one of the largest broker boards in the country.</p><p>That may complicate its ability to hire its own truckers.&#xa0;Daniel Lacroix, who is a director at a regional trucking company, told Business Insider that he wasn't interested in working with Amazon after seeing the rates offered.</p><p>"We didn't make it past the initial bid process because the rates were just ridiculous," Lacroix said. <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/pcar-stock"></a><ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="261393" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Paccar">Paccar</keyword> and <keyword id="1710860" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="autonomous-driving">autonomous driving</keyword> startup <keyword id="337466" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Aurora">Aurora</keyword> have entered into a strategic partnership to develop self-driving trucks.</li><li>Paccar's revenue fell significantly in 2020, although the stock managed to gain over 9% on the year.</li><li>The competition in the trucking industry is heating up with new entrants and industry veterans making waves.</li></ul><p><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/pcar-stock">Paccar</a> shares were up as much as 3% on Wednesday morning after the semi-truck manufacturer <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aurora-self-driving-deal-paccar-kenworth-peterbilt-semi-trucks-freight-2021-1">announced a strategic partnership</a> with the Amazon-backed autonomous driving start-up Aurora.</p><p>The two companies are looking to combine their respective expertise to develop, test, and sell semi-trucks powered by Aurora's autonomous-driving technology.</p><p>"Paccar looks forward to partnering with Aurora because of their industry-leading autonomous driving technology and impressive team," Preston Feight, Paccar's chief executive officer, said in a <a href="https://www.paccar.com/news/current-news/2021/paccar-and-aurora-form-strategic-partnership-to-develop-autonomous-trucks/">press release</a> on Tuesday. The company also provides its clientele with advanced powertrains, financial services, information technology, and distributes truck parts.</p><p>Aurora, meanwhile, has been in the self-driving technology game since 2017 when former Google autonomous-driving engineer Chris Urmson, former Tesla self-driving director Sterling Anderson, and Carnegie Mellon's Drew Bagnell came together to create the company.</p><p>Since 2017 Aurora has been making moves in an attempt to create the first fleet of self-driving semis.</p><p>In December, Aurora <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aurora-ceo-chris-urmson-explains-buying-uber-atg-self-driving-2020-12">acquired Uber's self-driving unit</a> giving up 26% equity to do so. The company's revenue has taken a hit recently, falling some 24% year-over-year in the third quarter, according to its <a href="https://www.paccar.com/media/3059/q320-10q.pdf">latest SEC filings</a>.</p><p>Additionally, Paccar earned just $2.57 per share for the nine months that ended September 30, 2020, versus $5.34 per share during the same period in 2019.</p><p>Paccar currently trades around $92 per share and holds a $30 billion market cap.</p><p>The company boasts 10 "buy" ratings, 14 "neutral" ratings, and six "sell" ratings from analysts.</p>

(That fulfillment center is near Stockton Metropolitan Airport, a regional airport whose <a href="https://www.freightwaves.com/news/freightwaves-market-expert-cathy-morrow-roberson-looks-at-the-amazon-effect-on-u-s-airports-as-they-adapt-to-the-demands-and-opportunities-of-e-commerce">Amazon partnership</a> <a href="https://www.modbee.com/news/local/article231217848.html">appears to be driving growth in cargo volumes</a>.)</p><p>"We're welcoming new equipment to our transportation fleet," an Amazon spokesperson told Business Insider. And, like mega-retailer Walmart, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/walmart-rail-operations-supply-chain-2019-2">which has some 8,600 company drivers driving goods in its branded tractor-trailers</a>, Amazon is looking to in-house delivery and logistics. </p><p>One strategy to keep shipping costs low, according to Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky, is moving more and more of the company's shipping in-house instead of relying on third parties such as UPS, FedEx, or USPS.
