 Rajaram, who was born in a small village in <keyword id="6357713" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Uttar-Pradesh">Uttar Pradesh</keyword>, began research work with Borlaug in 1969. He successfully crossed varieties of winter and spring wheat with his own plant breeding techniques. This led to the development of plants that have higher yields and dependability under a wide range of environments. 
 The <keyword id="9662" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Scientist">scientist</keyword>, who is a citizen of <keyword id="3746" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Mexico">Mexico</keyword>, is credited with developing 480 varieties of wheat that have been released in 51 countries. 
 “It’s a great honour. I am honoured that the <keyword id="2355960" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="World-Food-Prize-committee">World Food Prize committee</keyword> has recognized me for the work I have done,” said Rajaram. According to him, the next big challenge is developing plants with more drought tolerance, staving off the effects of salt water intrusion as oceans rise and other issues related to climate change. 
 Rajaram expanded upon his mentor Borlaug’s work with his own achievements, said <keyword id="1297326" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="World-Food-Prize-Foundation">World Food Prize Foundation</keyword> president <keyword id="2355967" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Kenneth-Quinn">Kenneth Quinn</keyword>. 
 
“His breakthrough breeding technologies have had a far-reaching and significant impact in providing more food around the globe and alleviating world hunger,” said Quinn. 
 Quinn said it’s fitting that the prize be awarded to Rajaram as the Des Moines-based organization celebrates the centennial of Borlaug’s 1914 birth in Cresco, Iowa. Borlaug, who won the 1970 Nobel for boosting agricultural production in what has become known as the <keyword id="50335" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Green-Revolution">Green Revolution</keyword>, launched the World Food Prize in 1986. 
 The foundation also added Rajaram’s new varieties can be grown in marginal areas, such as small <keyword id="6439698" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="mountain">mountain</keyword> plots in Pakistan, remote areas in China and in the acidic soils of Brazil. Rajaram said he plans to give some of the money from the prize to private organisations in India who work with the poor and the remaining money could be used for plant breeding research.

Indian Scientist Wins $25,000 As World Food Prize

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Some are likening Saturday's attack on Israel by Hamas to the September 11, 2001, attacks on the US.</li><li>The scale of the attacks — from land, sea, and air — is unlike anything Israel has faced before.</li></ul>Reut Aisenberg woke with a start on Saturday morning to the sound of air raid sirens slicing through the otherwise tranquil Tel Aviv air.At about 6 a.m., Aisenberg, 36, scrambled into the reinforced concrete safe room inside the flat she shares with her 40-year-old husband and their two young children. Together, in their pajamas, they huddled in the darkness as the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/video-israeli-soldiers-gun-battle-hamas-gaza-war-day-2-2023-10">first of thousands of missiles</a> rained down over their city, the opening act of a brazen <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-hamas-2023-10">strike by Hamas</a> that some in Israel are calling the country's "9/11 moment."It was far from how the family thought the day would unfold, having planned to mark the annual Simchat Torah holiday at a local park.The timing of the attack on Saturday morning "was a shock," Aisenberg told Insider on Sunday night from her home. "No one saw it coming," she said, adding: "This is going to be a trauma that Israel is going to carry with it from now until the end of time.""It's a very small country and everybody knows someone who is either in the military or someone who lives in one of those communities that were hijacked by terrorists," Aisenberg said.Within Israel's borders, where the clash has already <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinians-gaza-hamas-rockets-airstrikes-tel-aviv-ca7903976387cfc1e1011ce9ea805a71">claimed more than 700 lives</a>, people have begun drawing parallels between the onslaught and the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.Multiple Israelis spoke to Insider throughout the weekend about what they'd witnessed and the attack's impact, which they say will long burn in their nation's collective memory.<h2>'You have rockets raining from the sky'</h2>Like 9/11, which changed the United States and its identity for years to come — remaking its national security and intelligence-gathering apparatus, triggering a protracted military campaign in the Middle East, and fueling a sense of patriotism unseen in years — Aisenberg and others agreed that the events of the past 48 hours would also fundamentally reshape Israel from cultural, security, and political perspectives.Despite the long-term ramifications, for now, Aisenberg is just hoping to ride out the conflict wherever it leads. She feels relatively secure in Tel Aviv since the sirens typically provide about 60 seconds' worth of warning before the impact of incoming missiles from Gaza.Compared to the 15 seconds she previously had while serving as a member of the Israeli armed forces in Sderot, a city close to the Gaza border, a full minute feels like a relative luxury — ample time to seek shelter in a stairwell or another location before an explosion.With 15 seconds, the only option is to run into someone's house if the door is open, she said, or lay on the ground and "pray to God" that you don't die."I'm not freaking out. I'm still in control," Aisenberg said. "I can make decisions, I can function. But clearly, it's not easy. You have rockets raining from the sky."Although Israelis are both "shocked" and "very sad," she said they are resolved not to give in. "We are going to win this."<h2>Historical parallels</h2>Israel is not a country unaccustomed to violent clashes with its neighbors.But the scale of these attacks — which saw Hamas fighters take hostages back over the Gaza border and mount offensives across the land, sea, and air from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/video-israel-hamas-gaza-paragliders-music-festival-2023-10">motorized paragliders</a> — are of a different magnitude than the country has witnessed before."This is Israel's 9/11," Ian Bremmer, a political scientist and founder of the Eurasia Group, a risk research and consulting firm, <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/ianbremmer/status/1710684352630120654?s=20">wrote on X</a>, the platform formerly known as Twitter. But, by the sheer volume of casualties, he said, the stakes for Israel are even higher.Several other posts on the social networking site also likened the attacks to 9/11 or Pearl Harbor, the Japanese attack on an American naval base in Hawaii that drew the United States into the Second World War in 1941.Jessica Cohen, a 25-year-old American from Long Island, New York, who has called Israel home for the past seven years, was just 3 years old on 9/11 but still remembers how "distraught" her family was that day."I can imagine," she told Insider by phone from her home, about 20 minutes south of Tel Aviv, that this attack on Israel is very much "that same nightmare, that same fear — but 10 times worse."Hamas leaders have claimed their incursion was a response to Israeli escalations against Palestinians, including the "desecration" of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/hamas-commander-says-attacks-are-in-defense-of-al-aqsa-claims-5000-missiles-fired/">Al-Aqsa Mosque</a> in Jerusalem. Tensions have been exacerbated between Israelis and Palestinians this year as the right-wing government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has supported an increase in the number of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/29/world/middleeast/israel-west-bank-settlements-expansion.html">Jewish settlements</a> in the West Bank.Security experts have said Israel quietly let down its guard amid rising unrest, political infighting, and pushback against Netanyahu's government.Some have speculated that Hamas sought to exploit the breach to jettison <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/significance-hamas-chose-attack-israel-now-rcna119351">diplomatic efforts</a> between Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the US that might have resulted in Riyadh extending diplomatic recognition to Israel. Iran, too, appears to have been eager to take advantage of the instability. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/world/middle-east/iran-israel-hamas-strike-planning-bbe07b25">The Wall Street Journal reported</a> Sunday that Tehran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had coordinated the strike with Hamas since August.As was the case with the United States after that attack 22 years ago — which led to a prolonged military campaign in Afghanistan — Israel is already mounting a widespread retaliatory effort called Operation Swords of Iron. Netanyahu has vowed to exact "an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netanyahu-israel-response-hamas-attack-devastating-for-gaza-2023-10">unprecedented price</a>" and a response "on a scale and intensity that the enemy has so far not experienced."Israeli jets have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHEBb9YBHZ4">struck buildings in Gaza</a>, while ground forces have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/video/watch-israeli-military-tanks-seen-near-gaza-border/E080D91F-3EFC-4868-BE7B-93BCD14E1BEF.html">mobilized heavy artillery</a> like tanks and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.idf.il/en/mini-sites/swords-of-iron/real-time-updates-07-10/">engaged in skirmishes</a> with Hamas fighters. US officials have reportedly predicted that a mass <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/israel-formally-declares-war-on-hamas-seeks-full-control-gaza-2023-10">ground invasion</a> is imminent, and more than 400 Palestinians have already died, according to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/livecoverage/israel-hamas-gaza-rockets-attack-palestinians">Palestinian Health Ministry</a>.Kenneth Quinn, a 57-year-old American high school English teacher who's lived in Israel for more than three decades, drew other comparisons between this conflict and 9/11 — mainly because both national tragedies claimed high numbers of civilian lives."It had never happened in New York," he explained by phone from Israel. "Something like this had never happened here. In those two ways, it's similar."Up and down the country, Israelis were angered by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-the-hamas-attacks-have-trashed-israels-reputation-for-spying-2023-10">the lapses that enabled Hamas</a> to evade the eyes of Jerusalem's military and intelligence services, Quinn added, calling the failures "incomprehensible." He predicted they could ultimately spell ruin for the political fortunes of the country's deeply divided coalition government.<h2>Loved ones lost</h2>Some Israelis who spoke to Insider worried that the country might not have expelled all of the Hamas fighters that crossed over from Gaza, which could lead to further violence. Those fears may have been magnified by the unrest in communities near the border region just hours after the attack got underway.There, close to the Gaza border, Aisenberg's mother- and father-in-law spent much of Saturday afternoon hiding in their home as Hamas fighters infiltrated their small town and wreaked havoc. Aisenberg said they would relocate to her sister-in-law's house by way of special armored transports she believed local officials were organizing.In the central city of Be'er Sheva, Quinn said he'd spent part of Sunday at Soroka Hospital, where wounded Israelis were receiving medical attention. He recounted meeting a woman who had attended the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/israelis-palestinian-militants-invaded-fled-desert-festival-2023-10">Tribe of Nova</a> festival, where hundreds descended on a site near the Gaza border to revel in a night of music and dance.The woman — a single mother of several children who did not attend the festival — sustained multiple gunshot wounds after Hamas fighters transformed the event into an early staging ground for their campaign, claiming more than 250 casualties and seizing numerous hostages, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/music-festival-revelers-israeli-desert-became-victims-hamas-militants-rcna119394">media reports</a>.At the hospital, the woman told Quinn that she was separated from her friend during the chaos and had spent hours lying on the ground, pretending to be dead in a bid to survive. She was later discovered alive and is expected to recover from her injuries.One of Quinn's former colleagues, a high school teacher who taught physics, also attended the same festival, he came to find out. Unlike the woman who was taken to the hospital, however, the teacher is unaccounted for and, as of Sunday evening, Quinn said it was unclear whether he had been killed or taken hostage.Cohen, the American woman living south of Tel Aviv, is facing a nightmare of her own: She and her husband, Gilad Peretz, have been unsuccessfully trying to track down Peretz's 51-year-old father, Mark, who disappeared Saturday morning after racing to pick up his daughter from the music festival.While his daughter survived, Mark's whereabouts remain a mystery, Cohen and her husband told Insider. They believe his cellphone is dead, and they say they spotted his white Audi A4 sedan on a newscast not far from where he vanished after the fighting broke out.<h2>'We cannot afford to be divided'</h2>As the fighting continues, Aisenberg said Israelis are determined to prevail against Hamas and <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/lebanon-israel-chebaa-farms-gaza-rocket-attack-cd7b26f890bf4cae32491721506ec0a1">Hezbollah</a>. The second militant group began to provoke additional violence along the northern border that Israel shares with Lebanon following the attacks from Gaza.Though officially founded after the conclusion of World War II, Israel has faced "so many terrible wars" from "biblical times" through the Holocaust to more recent clashes, Aisenberg said. She hopes that this one will unite the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hamas-surprise-attack-israel-palestine-not-shock--netanyahu-critics-2023-10">international community</a> behind the embattled Jewish state — but, given its many adversaries on the world stage, it's unclear whether that hope will be realized."I hope this is going to be an incentive for everybody to come together," she said. "We cannot afford to be divided."At the very least, whether or not her sentiments extend to Israel's allies or her country, whose political organs are racked by painful schisms, Aisenberg and her family are vowing to stick together. As a professional tour guide, her job is to introduce visitors to Israel's ancient sites, but there's little need to give tours during a war. Instead, she'll spend the coming days with her children and her husband, a software engineer who works from home.Together, they're ready to ride out whatever comes. 'This is Israel's 9/11': Why Israelis say Hamas' unprecedented assault will change their country forever

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Hamas, the group that controls Gaza, took dozens of Israelis hostage, Israeli officials said.</li><li>It's unclear precisely how many hostages were taken and what their condition may be.</li></ul>When Hamas militants crossed into Israel on Saturday morning in the opening series of attacks that a unleashed war that has claimed hundreds of lives in both Israel and Gaza, they targeted Israeli citizens as hostages. More than 100 were taken back to Gaza as captives, the <a href="https://www.ajc.org/news/what-is-known-about-israeli-hostages-taken-by-hamas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Israeli government</a> has said. "These are numbers that were up until now unimaginable," Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, a spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces, <a href="https://news.yahoo.com/women-children-seniors-believed-among-125502809.html">said</a>. "This will shape the future of this war."In the days since Hamas' attack, Israeli families have turned to the international community — telling stories about their missing loved ones in press conferences, television interviews, and on social media — in a bid to garner support.One family in Nir Oz, a kibbutz in southern Israel not far from the Gaza border, saw five members captured by Hamas, Abbey Onn, a cousin of those now assumed to be hostages, told Insider via a phone call.Onn, an American who lives in Herzliya, near Tel Aviv, told Insider that five of her family members, ranging from age 12 to 80, were believed to have been kidnapped. But since Saturday, the family has received no up-to-date information on their well-being, she said.Among those kidnapped were three children between the ages of 12 and 14; a 50-year-old father; and an 80-year-old grandmother, she said. Onn said it was possible that Hamas may have set their home on fire to lure them outside."I feel devastated because I understand that Israel is going to do what it needs to protect the majority of its citizens," Onn said. "I don't know what the solution to this will be. I don't know what the outcome is."Spokespersons for the US State Department, Israeli government, and Israel Defence Forces did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Tuesday. <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/hamas-threatens-israel-gaza-kill-civilians-hostages-siege-rcna119532" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hamas has threatened</a> to kill civilian hostages should Israel target civilian sites in Gaza "without warning," a representative for the group said. That's likely to create difficult conflicts for Israel in the days ahead, as its government balances concerns for the hostages' safety with the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netanyahu-israel-response-hamas-attack-devastating-for-gaza-2023-10">swift and punishing response</a> it's promised to deliver."As the Israeli military responds to what's happened, obviously ensuring that it does so while also safeguarding the Israelis who have been taken captive becomes imperative," Ted Deutch, the CEO of the American Jewish Committee and former Democratic member of the House of Representatives from Florida, told Insider on Monday. He added that the American Jewish Committee's offices in Jerusalem and the US were actively "responding when we receive calls from family members" about missing loved ones. "We try to get them in touch with the appropriate people in Israel who can be helpful."<h2>The captors close in</h2>Onn said her loved ones were terrified when Hamas came to their home."We started getting WhatsApp messages from family members that Hamas was in the kibbutz," Onn said. "They could hear Hamas in the house. They could hear gunfire, and we understood that they were afraid for their lives. They didn't know if they would get out."Some members of Onn's family, including Hadas, the children's mother, escaped Hamas militants. But, as for those who were taken, Onn said the family has to hold on to hope during an excruciating time."You try to stay one notch above the emotions and try to push through and do anything you can to make sure that the world sees this and understands," she said. And she said that there is a distinction between the Palestinian people and Hamas, which she called a "terror organization" that's distinct from civilians in Gaza.Hamas' goal in taking hostages back to Gaza remains unclear, but <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/09/world/middleeast/israel-hostages-hamas-explained.html#:~:text=What%20happens%20next%3F,Israel%20strikes%20back%20in%20Gaza." target="_blank" rel="noopener">some have speculated</a> that they could be used to bargain in an eventual negotiation or prisoner swap with Israel. <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/shes-strong-lady-family-abducted-elderly-israeli-plead-her-release-2023-10-09/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Reuters reported</a> Monday, citing a source briefed on the talks, that Qatari mediators had "held urgent calls" to try to secure the release of kidnapped Israeli women and children in exchange for 36 Palestinian women and children held in Israeli jails.Hamas may also be hoping that the presence of Israelis will deter Jerusalem from pressing a full-scale attack inside Gaza, though recent reports suggested that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government is readying a large-scale <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/israel-gearing-up-ground-invasion-war-with-hamas-risks-expanding-2023-10">ground invasion</a>.The abductions also stand to deal a painful, long-term psychological blow to Israel, Kenneth Quinn, an American high school English teacher who's lived in the country for more than three decades, told Insider."Israelis are extremely, extremely sensitive to hostages being taken," Quinn said, adding that the country had engaged in prisoner swaps over the years, leading to the release of numerous operatives to groups known to engage in terrorist activity.<h2>A plea from loved ones</h2>Information about missing loved ones has been hard to come by, people in Israel told Insider on Sunday and Monday. Some families are speaking with international media outlets to share their stories."We know that the government and the military are working their channels, but we don't know much more," Onn said."We're optimistic that, if we can raise the level of urgency on this in the international community, that there'll be enough pressure that these people will be released," she added, noting that her family was also trying to liaise with the consulates of the French and American governments because some of her loved ones hold more than one passport.Meanwhile, numerous other families have taken to public forums to plead for the hostages to be released. Families of kidnapped Americans gathered for a press conference in Tel Aviv on Tuesday afternoon, where they appealed to Washington for help. Nahar Neta, an American citizen born in Israel whose mother Adrienne Neta was captured by Hamas and taken to Gaza, said that families had received "zero communication from the Israeli government.""All we ask from the Biden administration and the Secretary of State Blinken is to act to the immediate release of all hostages, and remember that the US government has direct responsibility to the lives of the US citizens that are held hostage by these terrorists," Neta said during the televised conference. "So whatever any government needs to do in order to make that happen, please make that happen."Rubi Chen, whose son Itay is missing following the attack, added during the media event that his family had been in contact with the State Department and US embassy in Israel. He said the Israeli government had given his family an "indication" that Itay was considered "missing in action," he said.Chen said there had been "no formal or concentrated attempt to talk to us as a group and updating us about what they are doing in this matter" when asked at the press conference by NBC News anchor Lester Holt about whether the families had been contacted by government authorities. He said he thought it would be a "legit request" for State Department representatives to advise families on "what they are planning to do."John Kirby, a spokesperson for the National Security Council at the White House, told reporters in a Monday night briefing that the US government was in "direct communication with Israeli officials" about the hostage crisis, and had also "been hearing from many family members.""The President has directed his team to work with their Israeli counterparts on every aspect of the hostage crisis, including sharing intelligence and deploying experts from across the United States government to consult with and advise Israeli counterparts on hostage recovery efforts," Kirby said, <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/press-briefings/2023/10/10/virtual-on-the-record-gaggle-by-nsc-coordinator-for-strategic-communications-john-kirby-on-hamas-terrorist-attacks-in-israel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to a transcript</a>.<h2>'I just want my baby, my son back'</h2>In a televised interview Monday night with CNN, Shelly Shem Tov, an Israeli mother whose 21-year-old son Omer was taken hostage, said she just wants her family to be whole again.Speaking to CNN's Jake Tapper, Shem Tov recounted the call she received from Omer before he was kidnapped. "He was in panic. He told us that they are shooting guns," she told Tapper. The family tracked Omer's location on his cell phone, she added, and said they watched as his signal showed him crossing the border into Gaza. They haven't spoken since, she said.Shem Tov said that the family didn't have information on Omer's condition, but, hours after he was abducted, they received a Telegram video showing a young man lying down on the bed of a pickup truck, handcuffed, who they believe is Omer. He appeared unhurt, Shem Tov said, but added that she'd received no new information in the following days."I just want my baby, my son back," Shem Tov said. Martin, and Kevin Quinn <a href="http://pdfserver.amlaw.com/nlj/PresNominees2.pdf">conducted an analysis</a> of Trump's potential Supreme Court picks back in December, to determine how conservative they were.Since judges are notoriously close-lipped about their political leanings or how they might rule on potential cases, the researchers used an equation taking into account the political affiliations of the senators from their home states and the president appointing them. For current and past justices, they also looked at their voting record on cases.Here's what they found:Republicans' 51-49 slight hold on the Senate predicts a tough process ahead for Kavanaugh, which was made more contentious after committee Democrats spoke out against a White House decision to withhold 27,000 documents - many from Kavanaugh's time in the Bush administration - citing "constitutional privilege."Kavanaugh's hearing began Tuesday morning despite several outbursts from protestors and Senate Democrats <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/democrats-try-to-stop-brett-kavanaugh-hearing-within-seconds-2018-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">moving to adjourn</a> until more documents were made available. His hearings will likely last all week.<h2>Roe v. Wade</h2>President Donald Trump said during the 2016 presidential campaign that he would <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/if-roe-v-wade-overturned-supreme-court-abortion-trump-2016-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">appoint justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade</a>, the landmark case granting women the constitutional right to an abortion.In his 2006 hearing to be confirmed to the DC circuit court, Kavanaugh said he would not share his "personal view" on the case, but would uphold the Supreme Court's ruling, as it is "binding precedent of the court." He has also stated several times since his nomination that he did not intend to scrap the landmark abortion rights ruling.But the conservative judge has been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supreme-court-could-reduce-abortion-rights-without-overturning-roe-v-wade-2018-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stricter on the issue of abortion</a> as a whole. Most recently, Kavanaugh made headlines in an October 2017 when he backed the Trump administration's arguments in his dissent to a ruling that allowed an undocumented minor in US custody to receive an abortion.In his <a href="https://www.cadc.uscourts.gov/internet/opinions.nsf/C81A5EDEADAE82F2852581C30068AF6E/%24file/17-5236-1701167.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dissent, Kavanaugh wrote</a> the Supreme Court had established "the government has permissible interests in favoring fetal life, protecting the best interests of a minor, and refraining from facilitating abortion."He wrote that the decision to extend that right to an undocumented immigrant was "as novel as it is wrong."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div><h2>Executive authority</h2>Lawmakers have zeroed in on Kavanaugh's thinking on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/brett-kavanaugh-opinions-on-impeachment-and-indictment-2018-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">whether the president can be investigated</a>, while Trump's campaign is in the crosshairs of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-has-been-charged-in-russia-investigation-mueller-trump-2017-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation</a>.Kavanaugh was associate counsel on the team led by Kenneth Starr, the special prosecutor who investigated former President Bill Clinton's extramarital affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.As part of Starr's team, Kavanaugh helped draft the report recommending Clinton's impeachment, in which he wrote independent counsel investigations can take "too long," easily become "politicized," and can go beyond their original scope. Lhota, who also served in the Giuliani administration, is entering a crowded field in this race. On the Republican side, he faces billionaire CEO of Gristedes supermarket, John Catsimatidis, who has promised to deploy his fortune for the campaign.
The Democratic side is stacked with veterans — former Comptroller Bill Thompson (who took on Bloomberg in 2009), Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, and powerhouse fundraiser and City Council Speaker, Christine Quinn.
That isn't scaring some big names (and wallets) away from Lhota, though. Ken Langone, the billionaire founder of Home Depot, is one of them.

Mr. Langone, a prodigious Republican donor, is even entertaining the possibility of an independent political action committee, unbound by spending limits, devoted to electing Mr. Lhota. “All I know is that Joe is not going to want for money,” he said in an interview.
Mr. Langone, who raised millions of dollars for Mr. Romney, said, “I plan to do everything I can to help Joe Lhota get elected, as long as it’s ethical and as long as it’s legal.” He called Mr. Lhota “a superb manager.”...
“I worry a lot about the fiscal health of New York City,” said Mr. Tisch, the head of Loews and an invitee to the Lhota breakfast. “As I look around at the group of people running for mayor, the person I think has the best capacity of dealing with these issues is Joe.”
It's important to keep in mind that NYC isn't a Republican town. Even if Lhota manages to win the Republican nomination, that doesn't mean every GOP donor will rally around him because victory could still be a long shot.
Christine Quinn has bagged some big former Romney donors like Randy Levine, the President of the New York Yankees, and Ron Perelman the chairman of Revlon.
