In June, Business Insider's Paige Leskin <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-ceo-jeff-bezos-buys-manhattan-penthouse-apartment-80-million-2019-6">reported</a> that Jeff Bezos purchased a New York City penthouse along with two units below it for an estimated $80 million. RAISING THE ARIZONA QUESTION: </strong>Pressure is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/arizona-election-audit-trump-update-doj-2021-6">increasing on the Department of Justice to intervene in the GOP-led Arizona election audit</a>. Elections experts tell Insider that there is a need for the federal government to get involved given the lack of transparency about what even local Republican officials have dismissed as a sham.</p><ul><li><strong>Key quote: </strong>"Everyone has pointed out the myriad of problems with the so-called audit, and yet it continues on," said Grant Woods, a former Republican attorney general of Arizona who has become a Democrat. "At some point, we're going to have to make a point in this country that you can't do this." Woods said he had reached out to the DOJ to encourage it to deploy people to Arizona who could more closely monitor the audit.</li></ul><p><strong>But officials are far from united in what Washington should do:</strong></p><p><strong>Some advised staying as far away as possible: </strong>One official worried that the unintended consequence of such an action could be akin to the deadly Capitol riot. "Could there be another riot or interaction like they had on January 6? You bet," said Steve Gallardo, the only Democratic official on the board of supervisors in Maricopa County.</p><ul><li><strong>Others think the best thing to do is nothing at all: </strong>If Democrats believe the audit "is a train wreck, then they should let the train run off the track, not stop the train from breaking," said Bennie Smith, a Democratic election official in Tennessee, who has traveled to Arizona to monitor the audit.</li></ul><p><strong>The DOJ has warned Arizona's Senate president that the audit could be violating federal law: </strong>Pamela Karlan, the principal deputy assistant attorney general of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, expressed concern to the Arizona Senate's president, Karen Fann, about reports that ballot and other election materials were being destroyed and compromised under the supervision of Cyber Ninjas, the cybersecurity firm hired to help with the audit that has no previous election-related experience.</p><p><strong style="color: #222222;">The audit may also be done soon: </strong>Ken Bennett, the Arizona Senate liaison overseeing the Maricopa County audit, said the hand count could finish this week with a report issued late next month or early August. <a href="https://www.politifact.com/article/2021/may/04/ask-politifact-why-are-arizona-republicans-auditin/">Of course, previous government-run audits found nothing amiss</a>. Local officials have also promised to challenge whatever report is issued.</p><ul><li><strong>But it's unlikely that Arizona will be the end of this: </strong>Lawmakers from several states, including Georgia, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Colorado, have traveled to Arizona to observe the audit. <a href="https://www.azcentral.com/restricted/?return=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.azcentral.com%2Fstory%2Fnews%2Fpolitics%2Farizona%2F2021%2F06%2F07%2Farizonas-ballot-audit-could-spread-other-states%2F7528915002%2F">Experts fear that what's happening in Maricopa County is just a preview of what's to come</a>.</li></ul><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/arizona-election-audit-trump-update-doj-2021-6"><strong>More on the competing pressures on the Justice Department.</strong></a></p><hr /><p><strong>2. Four million Americans quit their jobs in April - a 20-year record: </strong>Companies were advertising 9.3 job million openings at the end of April, up 12% from the previous month, the Labor Department said. The number of vacancies grew most in the accommodation and food-service sectors, which are opening up after more than a year of pandemic restrictions. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-shortage-quit-job-openings-record-vacancies-labor-department-2021-6">Businesses have reported severe labor shortages in recent weeks</a>.</p><hr /><p><strong>3. The Pentagon is reportedly weighing airstrikes after Afghanistan withdrawal: </strong>Military officials are looking into the possibility of supporting Afghan forces with airstrikes depending on the threat of the Taliban taking control over a major city in the country, The New York Times reports. The Biden administration initially planned to end US air support when troops were withdrawn, but concern over the consequences of withdrawal is said to have prompted it to reconsider. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-weighs-airstrikes-to-aid-afghan-forces-against-the-taliban-report-2021-6">Officials said no decisions had been made</a>.</p><hr /><p><strong>4. Progressives draw a red line on infrastructure talks: </strong>A handful of Democratic senators went public with their outrage after a White House official acknowledged during an interview that Biden might not get some of his most ambitious climate proposals in a final infrastructure bill, Politico reports. <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2021/06/09/progressives-climate-provisions-infrastructure-492667">Lawmakers are reportedly worried that climate concerns will lose out in the push for a bipartisan deal</a>.</p><ul><li><strong>Democratic Sen. US reportedly set to buy 500 million Pfizer vaccine doses to ship around the world: </strong>The Biden administration is lining up 500 million doses of Pfizer-BioNTech's two-dose coronavirus vaccine, The Washington Post reports. This latest development comes on the heels of the Biden administration promising 80 million vaccine doses to be exported in conjunction with the World Health Organization's COVAX effort. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-exporting-vaccine-500-million-pfizer-doses-worldwide-2021-6">More on the vaccine diplomacy here</a>.</p><hr /><p><strong>7. World's largest beef supplier paid $11 million to hackers: </strong>JBS made a ransom payment to hackers after they temporarily knocked out the company's plants that process roughly one-fifth of the US's meat, The Wall Street Journal reports. A top executive said the payment was made to shield the company from further disruption and to try to minimize the hack's effects on the supply chain. <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/jbs-paid-11-million-to-resolve-ransomware-attack-11623280781?mod=hp_lead_pos2">Amid a wave of attacks, some federal officials support barring companies from making such ransom payments</a>.</p><hr /><p><strong>8. Dr. Fauci has had enough:</strong> Dr. Anthony Fauci lashed out at his critics, saying the recent string of attacks on him were "quite frankly, attacks on science." <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/06/09/fauci-blasts-preposterous-covid-conspiracies-accuses-critics-of-attacks-on-science.html">Fauci told MSNBC, "People want to fire me or put me in jail for what I've done - namely, follow the science."</a></p><hr /><p><strong>9. But the CDC isn't recommending that all Americans wear masks indoors again. It was an emotionally raw scene as numerous witnesses and lawmakers broke down when recounting the day. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/first-january-6-hearing-searing-indictment-gop-lies-capitol-riot-2021-7">Officers had a lot to say about what they experienced</a>.</p><ul><li><strong>Key quote: </strong>"Too many are now telling me that hell doesn't exist or that hell actually wasn't that bad," the police officer Michael Fanone said of efforts to spin the insurrection as anything less.</li></ul><hr /><p><strong>4. Patience is running out on infrastructure talks: </strong>Lawmakers are privately griping as senators and White House officials continue to work on a nearly $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure plan, the Associated Press reports. Top party leaders cited progress in their negotiations but haven't set any new deadlines. Republican senators privately sparred over whether a deal would make it easier for Democrats to pass a $3.5 trillion package that is unlikely to receive any Republican support. Elizabeth Warren is putting student-loan companies on notice: </strong>Warren told my colleague the "days are over" when student-loan companies could mislead borrowers. <p>"I do believe the Cavs will aggressively target Kevin Love," said ESPN's Brian Windhorst. "There is probably not a player in the league that would fit better alongside LeBron James than Kevin Love."</p>
<p>According to Chris Broussard of ESPN, the Cavs have already offered the Timberwolves Anthony Bennett (the first pick of the 2013 draft), Dion Waiters (the 4th pick of the 2012 draft) and a future first-round pick for Love.</p>
<p>Love, who can opt out of his contract after next season, has never made the playoffs in six NBA seasons and <a href="http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/11068190/minnesota-timberwolves-kevin-love-hopes-everything-works-out">recently told ESPN</a> that he wants to be on a team where he can win.</p>

<p>Earlier this week, Ken Berger reported that Love does have interest in playing with the Cavs <a href="https://twitter.com/KBergCBS/status/486993395479744514">as long as they were able to sign James</a>.</p>
<p>Even with LeBron on board, the Cavs have several pieces that can be used in a trade to land Love.</p>
<p>One of the intriguing aspects of <a href="http://www.si.com/nba/2014/07/11/lebron-james-cleveland-cavaliers">LeBron's letter to Sports Illustrated</a> is that he mentions several Cavs players by name but does not mention Andrew Wiggins, the first pick of this year's draft. Wiggins has not yet signed a contract with the Cavaliers, which makes him eligible to be traded and it is hard to imagine the T'wolves will want to make a deal without the University of Kansas product.</p>
<p>The Cavs also may have as many as three first-round picks in next year's draft which can potentially be used in a trade. One of those, ironically, came from the Miami Heat, who suddenly need it a lot more than the Cavs do.</p>
<p>The Heat can keep that pick if it is in the top 10.</p>
<p>If the Cavs do trade for Love, he could potentially stay in Cleveland for two seasons even without an extension. However, he would almost certainly want to at least opt out and re-sign to a max contract if staying in Cleveland is considered desirable.</p>

<p>The tab for professional services covers the period beginning with Detroit's July 18 bankruptcy filing until the end of September and likely has mushroomed since then, as lawyers spent significant time before U.S. bankruptcy judge Steven Rhodes, even throughout the holiday season.</p>
<p>The fees and expenses Detroit incurred through the end of September were "substantial" but also unavoidable given circumstances of the bankruptcy, wrote Robert M. Fishman, who was appointed fee examiner in August, in his first quarterly report to the U.S. bankruptcy court.</p>
<p>"Due to the magnitude and complexity of the case, the novelty of the legal issues, the extremely tight time frames imposed by the court and the strong differences in opinion between the various parties about what to do and how to do it, it was (and continues to be) inevitable that the costs associated with the services provided by the various professionals were going to be significant," Fishman said in the report.</p>
<p>The fees date from July 18, when Detroit filed the biggest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history in an effort to address more than $18 billion in debt and other liabilities. The city's labor unions, pension funds, bond insurers and other creditors have fought various aspects of the case, efforts that have churned up large fees for Detroit's team of bankruptcy professionals.</p>
<p>Detroit's bill for fees was $11.4 million, with the biggest fees, $6.59 million, coming from Jones Day, the law firm that previously employed Kevyn Orr, the city's state-appointed emergency manager.</p>
<p>Jones Day's top bankruptcy attorneys, Bruce Bennett and Corinne Ball, both billed at the highest rate of any of the firm's lawyers, at $1,000 per hour. That is a raise for both from what they received in major cases of recent years. Ball led Chrysler through its Chapter 11 case, initially billing $900 per hour, while Bennett took the Los Angeles Dodgers through its bankruptcy at $975 an hour, according to public records in those cases.</p>
<p>Expenses from Jones Day and other parties working on Detroit's case totaled about $348,000, according to Fishman's report. Detroit also is responsible for bills incurred by a committee of its retired workers that was created by the federal court at the city's request. The committee's fees totaled nearly $1.96 million while the expenses were $61,500.</p>
<p>By comparison, fees and expenses in the first 90 days of Chrysler's bankruptcy case, also led by Jones Day, totaled about $36 million for armies of lawyers, bankers and advisers from 13 different firms, according to court records in that case. Professional fees eventually topped $100 million in the Chrysler bankruptcy.</p>
<p>Jefferson County, Alabama, which was the largest municipal bankruptcy before Detroit, spent about $25 million on its two-year stay in court protection, according to court records.</p>
<p>The fee examiner's report provides 1,600 pages of details of how each professional hired by Detroit has spent their time spending taxpayer money, broken down into six-minute intervals.</p>
<p>On the first day of the bankruptcy filing, Bruce Bennett spent 96 minutes on conference calls regarding Ernst &amp; Young, another 12 minutes on calls with Miller Buckfire and 96 minutes discussing an alternative restructuring proposal with insurance companies. Total bill: $3,400. Corinne Ball spent nine hours and 36 minutes the first day dealing with issues relating to the city's water and sewer department for a little under $10,000.</p>
<p>Bankruptcy is normally practiced in a fish bowl compared with other areas of law. Lawyers, accountants and other advisers have to provide detailed logs of their time billed on a case, broken down into six-minute intervals.</p>
<p>But thanks to a quirk in the bankruptcy code, Chapter 9 municipal cases do not require disclosure of what is spent on lawyers and advisers. Despite that, Judge Rhodes, who is overseeing Detroit's case, appointed a fee examiner to ensure bills were reasonable.</p>
<p>While no one likes to have their bills picked over, some attorneys said Fishman's appointment to review invoices might actually be welcome, because it may be seen in some quarters as evidence that lawyers billing $750 an hour might be considered reasonable.</p>

The hard-seltzer brand is also facing some complaints from customers who said they bought cases of White Claw containing empty cans.</li><li>"It doesn't matter how much White Claw we get in - just about any amount of the cases we bring in will be gone in the next couple days," said Josh Giboney, a beer manager in Fort Worth, Texas.</li><li><span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet"><span>Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.</span></a></span></li></ul><p>White Claw's surging <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/white-claw-beloved-by-bros-2019-8">popularity</a> has led to shortages, and in some cases complete outages, at stores across the US over the past month, according to interviews with beer and liquor stores and customers.&#xa0;</p><p>"In a weekend we go through over 100 cases of White Claw's variety pack," Olivia Atkinson, the owner of Montauk Beer and Soda in Montauk, New York, told Business Insider. "Since we don't have it, that's 100 cases we didn't sell."</p><p>White Claw, which has seen <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/05/style/white-claw-popular-memes.html">triple-digit sales growth</a> in the last year, confirmed to Business Insider that it is behind on production.&#xa0;</p><p>"We are working around the clock to increase supply given the rapid growth in consumer demand," Sanjiv Gajiwala, senior vice president of marketing at White Claw, said in an emailed statement. "In the meantime, we have been allocating product to our distributor partners to keep all markets in stock the best we can and will continue to do so until we get back to our normal safety stock position."</p><p>The company, which is owned by Mike's Hard Lemonade maker Mark Anthony Brands, declined to provide a timeline for when production would meet demand and inventory levels would normalize.&#xa0;</p><h2>Some stores face White Claw shortages and order limits</h2><p>In Fort Worth, Texas, Goody Goody Liquor can't keep White Claw in stock for more than a couple days at a time, according to Josh Giboney, the store's beer manager.&#xa0;</p><p>"It doesn't matter how much White Claw we get in - just about any amount of the cases we bring in will be gone in the next couple days," he said in an interview. "The people buying it are getting in early and getting a lot, knowing it will sell out."</p><p>The store's distributor has been out of stock of several White Claw flavors recently, he said.</p><p>"They don't have enough at their warehouse to sell to us," he said. "We're putting in orders and they have to write off half of them."</p><p>He chalked up the shortages to the drink's wide appeal, saying men and women of all ages are coming into the store and asking for White Claw.</p><p>"It's reaching a market of just about everyone," he said.&#xa0;</p><p>Ken Wieler, the owner of Richboro Beer and Soda in Richboro, Pennsylvania, said the distributor that supplies his store with White Claw has placed limits on order quantities of the hard seltzer as shortages persist.&#xa0;</p><p>"They are limiting us to 39 cases per order, when we probably sell 65 cases per week," Wieler said. "It hasn't been complete outages, but we're not getting what we want."</p><p>The lack of supply is upsetting some customers.</p><p>"The people want answers," Atkinson said. "I finally found it at a second local liquor store."</p><p>Dozens of people have vented their frustration and concern about the shortages on social media, as well, with some calling it a "crisis" and begging local stores to restock White Claw.</p><h2>White Claw faces some complaints of liquid missing from cans</h2><p>Separately, the hard-seltzer brand is facing some complaints from customers who said they bought cases of White Claw containing empty cans.</p><p>Emi Driscoll is one of those customers. She told Business Insider that she bought a six-pack of White Claw on August 22, and two of the six cans were empty.&#xa0;</p><p>"Their Twitter account replied to me and said to fill out a contact us form about it," she said. "I did but never heard back."</p><p>&#xa0;</p><p>The company declined to comment on complaints about the empty cans.&#xa0;</p><p>Amid these issues, however, White Claw continues to dominate the fast-growing hard-seltzer market.</p><p>"Despite reported shortages, we are excited to report that market share has continued to rise from 55% to 61% in just the past eight weeks," Gajiwala said, citing data from the research firm IRI.&#xa0;</p><p>"This is a really exhilarating time for the White Claw brand," he said. America May Start Drone Strikes In Two More 'Non-Battlefield' Countries

<p>This news got us wondering about what Cacheris and other major stars of the 1998-1999 <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impeachment_of_Bill_Clinton">Bill Clinton impeachment</a> have been up to since the biggest presidential scandal since Watergate.</p>

However, Clinton was forced to fess up after she produced a stained dress that commemorated their fling. He was later impeached by Congress for lying about the affair, meaning he was formally charged with misconduct.</span></p>
<p>Clinton also allegedly urged Lewinsky to hide their affair after she was subpoenaed by lawyers for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paula_Jones">Paula Jones</a>, a former Arkansas state employee who accused Clinton of sexual harassment.</p>
<p>As you probably recall, the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/1999/02/13/us/president-s-acquittal-overview-clinton-acquitted-decisively-no-majority-for.html">Senate acquitted Clinton</a> of both perjury and obstruction of justice in 1999. We know what Clinton has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bill-clinton-bunny-ranch-2014-3">been up to since then</a>. Here's what the other big Monicagate players have been doing, starting with Lewinsky herself:</p>
<h3>Monica Lewinsky</h3>
<p><img class="float_right" src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/53627882ecad04a84fe33b56-1200-924/lewinsky-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Monica Lewinsky" width="400" />Not long after the Clinton scandal, the diet company Jenny Craig <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/1999/dec/29/business/fi-48494">hired the full-figured Lewinsky</a> as a "celebrity" spokesperson. She then <a href="http://nymag.com/nymetro/news/people/features/4481/">moved to Manhattan</a> in search of a second act, becoming a socialite who designed purses. Later, she decamped for London, where she <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/story/2006/12/21/monica-lewinsky-earns-master-degree-in-london/">earned a master's degree from the London School of Economics</a>.</p>
<p>Lewinsky appears to <a href="http://time.com/6143/now-40-monica-lewinsky-guards-her-privacy/">be avoiding the spotlight</a> these days, though. In 2012 The New York Post reported she was working on a <a href="http://nypost.com/2012/09/20/monica-lewinsky-set-to-reveal-bill-clintons-sex-secrets-in-tell-all/">sexy tell-all memoir</a>. She has yet to release such a book, but if she does it could certainly put a damper on Hillary Clinton's expected presidential run.</p>
<h3>Plato Cacheris</h3>
<p><img class="float_left" src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/536279caeab8ea9f7e47f395-1200-800/plato-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Plato Cacheris" width="400" />Lewinsky's lawyer Cacheris made the news recently when it became known that Edward Snowden <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/29/us/snowden-retained-expert-in-espionage-act-defense.html">had obtained his counsel last summer</a> to try to reach a plea deal that would let him come back to the U.S.</p>
<p>Since representing America's most famous intern, he has worked on high-profile espionage and whistleblower cases. Perhaps the most important case he worked in involved <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Kiriakou">John Kiriakou</a>, a former CIA analyst who blew the whistle on the agency's torture program and is currently <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/former-cia-officer-john-kiriakou-sentenced-to-30-months-in-prison-for-leaks/2013/01/25/49ea0cc0-6704-11e2-9e1b-07db1d2ccd5b_story.html">serving a 30-month prison sentence</a>.</p>
<p>Cacheris also represented a former Defense Department analyst named Lawrence Franklin who got a decade in prison for <a href="http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=990CE6D8123FF932A15752C0A9609C8B63">passing military information to pro-Israel lobbyists</a>.</p>
<h3>Kenneth W. Starr</h3>
<p><img class="float_right" src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/53627fb2eab8eaa71e47f395-1200-924/kenneth-starr-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Kenneth Starr" width="400" />The lawyer whose name will always be associated <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/special/clinton/icreport/icreport.htm">with his report </a>is currently <a href="http://www.baylor.edu/president/">the president of Baylor University</a>, a Christian institution based in Waco, Texas. Before <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2003/09/09/politics/09STEX.html">joining Baylor in 2010</a>, Starr worked on some of the most noteworthy political cases in recent history, including a <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2003/09/09/politics/09STEX.html">fight against campaign finance reform</a> and the crusade <a href="http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=4&amp;ved=0CEkQFjAD&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Flatimesblogs.latimes.com%2Flanow%2F2008%2F12%2Fkenneth-w-starr.html&amp;ei=t3thU5aMOtfLsASx24DoCQ&amp;usg=AFQjCNHxxBQA0wPnUZa1S6RkOi1wy9MiqA&amp;bvm=bv.65636070,d.cWc">against gay marriage in California</a>.</p>
<p>Starr also represents the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jeremy-scahill/from-whitewater-to-blackw_b_32656.html">company Blackwater in a wrongful death suit</a> filed by the families of four contractors killed in Iraq. While much of his legal work has focused on fighting for traditionally conservative causes, Starr has also tried to get the death sentences of two convicted murderers overturned.</p>
<p>Speaking about the Lewinsky affair in 2010, Starr said, "<a href="http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/ken-starr-bill-clinton-impeachment-unhappy-decision/story?id=9850731">Who is not sorrowful for the entire chapter in American history</a>?"</p>
<h3>Paula Jones</h3>
<p><img class="float_left" src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/536280a56bb3f770070e7b7c-1200-924/paula%20jones.jpg" border="0" alt="Paula Jones" width="400" />Jones, a former Arkansas state employee, filed the case that arguably precipitated Clinton's impeachment because Lewinsky was deposed in that lawsuit. While Jones settled that case for $850,000, she told CNN in 2000 that most of that money went to pay her lawyers. She ended up <a href="http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0010/24/lkl.00.html">posing nude for Penthouse</a>, a decision she justified by saying she needed to pay her taxes and pay for her children's education. (That Penthouse issue still spurred the conservative commentator Ann Coulter to call her "trailer-park trash.")</p>
<p>A decade after her Penthouse photos, Jones was interviewed in Ken Gormley's book the "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-Death-American-Virtue-Clinton/dp/0307409457">Death of American Virtue</a>," which recounted the entire Lewinsky mess. In the book, Jones lamented "the mud they'd drug me through," <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/15/books/15book.html">according to a New York Times review</a>.</p>
<p>"I never lived in a trailer in my life," said Jones, who complained about the trauma of Clinton's alleged harassment.</p>
<h3>Henry John Hyde</h3>
<p><img class="float_left" src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5362812469bedde227667749-1200-858/hyde.jpg" border="0" alt="Hyde" width="400" />Hyde was the Congressman who chaired the House Judiciary Committee and <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/30/washington/29cnd-hyde.html?hp">led Clinton's impeachment trial</a>. Just a few months before that trial, Salon published a withering article called "<a href="http://www.salon.com/1998/09/17/cov_16newsb/">This Hypocrite Broke Up My Family</a>," which revealed Hyde had in fact had an extramarital affair.</p>
<p>After failing in his efforts to convict Clinton, Hyde went on to lead the House International Relations Committee, which invested billions in fighting HIV and AIDS, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/30/washington/30hyde.html">according to his New York Times obituary</a>. He died in 2007 at the age of 83.</p>
<h3>Cheryl Mills</h3>
<p><img class="float_right" src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/536281b8eab8eaf32647f38e-1200-800/haiti-8.jpg" border="0" alt="Haiti Cheryl Mills" width="480" /> Mills was deputy White House counsel under Clinton and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheryl_Mills">defended him during his impeachmnent trial</a>. She took a break from politics after leaving the Clinton administration, working at Oprah's Oxygen Media and <a href="http://www.politico.com/story/2013/07/50-politicos-to-watch-cheryl-mills-94182.html">as a senior vice president at New York University</a>.</p>
<p>But she couldn't stay away from the Clintons for long. Hillary Clinton picked Mills as general counsel for her 2008 presidential run and then appointed her as chief of staff when she was Secretary of State. <a href="http://www.politico.com/story/2013/07/50-politicos-to-watch-cheryl-mills-94182.html">Politico noted</a> last year that Mills will probably play a key role in a Hillary Clinton presidential run for 2016.</p>
<h3>Robert S. Bennett</h3>
<p><img class="float_right" src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5362834f6bb3f7da110e7b74-1200-1000/bennett-2.jpg" border="0" alt="Robert S. Bennett" width="480" />While Mills represented Clinton during the official impeachment proceedings, Bennett worked as Clinton's personal attorney throughout the Lewinsky scandal.</p>
<p>Bennett has worked on a number of other politically scandalous legal cases since Monicagate, including the case against New York Times reporter Judith Miller <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/10/16/AR2005101601228.html">over the leaking of a CIA operative's name</a>. Mills also represented former World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz <a href="http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/end-of-the-world-bank-scandal-wolfowitz-resigns-a-483522.html">in a huge scandal</a> that led to his resignation from the bank.</p>
<p>More recently, Mills defended <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megaupload">Megaupload </a>against allegations that it had orchestrated a huge piracy scheme, before he was forced to withdraw from the case in 2012 <a href="http://torrentfreak.com/megauploads-top-lawyer-outside-pressure-120123/">because of a conflict of interest with another of his firm's clients</a>.</p>

Where Are They Now: The Stars Of The Clinton Impeachment Scandal

<p>People who live with conditions ranging from diabetes to Alzheimer's rely on medical devices that monitor symptoms, perform diagnoses, and even provide treatment. Some, like insulin pumps, are worn on the body. The trouble is that many of these devices are bulky or inconvenient.</p>
<p>But researchers specializing in nanotechnology are developing ways to build materials and machines that can be worn comfortably by patients either inside or outside the skin.  </p>
<p>A conversation with his ten-year-old daughter inspired nanotechnologist David Carroll of Wake Forest University to find a material that could charge a phone or laptop by converting heat into electricity. What he ended up inventing <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/david-carroll-on-thermoelectric-fabrics-2013-4">does that</a> and much more.  </p>
<p><span>This thin material — which he calls "<keyword id="44011" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="power">power</keyword> felt" — can convert both heat and movement into electricity. Besides charging your phone, or capturing the heat lost through your car's tailpipe, this revolutionary fabric might change the way we practice medicine as well. </span></p>
<p><span>Unlike the thermoelectric materials currently available, Carroll's fabric is lightweight, feels like wool felt, and can be wrapped around surfaces or even sewn into clothing. That is because it is made from sheets of carbon nanotubes instead of the ceramics materials usually used to make thermoelectrics.</span><span> </span></p>
<p><span>With a manufacturing cost of somewhere around 25 cents for a couple of square feet, the stuff if incredibly cheap to make.  </span></p>
<p><span>Carroll says that a lot can be known about a person's physiology just through carefully measuring changes in body temperature and respiration.  This information can say a lot about symptoms a person might be experiencing or an injury someone might have.  </span></p>
<p><span>For example, infected areas are often hotter than normal. <br /></span></p>
<p><span>And, because it collects power from the heat of the body, it eliminates the need for batteries, which add weight to the sensors and can cause discomfort. </span></p>
<p><span>Here's a lightly edited version of what David Carroll told us about the medical applications of power felt.  </span></p>
<p><strong>Busines Insider: This power felt is amazing. Besides charging your cellphone, collecting heat from the sun solar, or making <keyword id="6357014" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="energy">energy</keyword> out of the heat lost from appliances and homes, what other applications does it have?</strong></p>
<p><strong>David Carroll: </strong>We have some really interesting applications for high-performance clothing. We expect that to be in testing for next year. And that high-performance clothing will do things like not only will it be useful for you to collect to power, I think the bigger story here is that we are also going to be using it for <keyword id="6354750" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="health">health</keyword> monitoring.</p>
<p><strong>Business Insider: Can you explain what you mean when you say, "high-performance clothing"?</strong></p>
<p><strong>David Carroll:</strong> So it collects power, but it also manages to collect information that lets us know an elderly person's risk of falling. Or if you are an Alzheimer's patient, it helps to monitor certain bodily functions, let us know the respiration of your skin, let us know things like sugar levels and things like that.</p>
<p>All of those functionalities need power associated with them, and most of those cases, for Alzheimer's patients, for people who are really elderly, for children that are handicapped, you can't really include <keyword id="28811" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="battery">battery</keyword> supplies for stuff like that.</p>
<p>So you have to be able to power it from the body itself. So we suspect we will not only be able to integrate power function but on the spot diagnosis with power felt.</p>
<p><strong>BI: With the power felt itself or in conjunction with other devices?</strong></p>
<p><strong>DC:</strong> With the power felt itself. The felt is measuring temperature locally. It's creating power from that temperature, but it is also measuring it. If you measure temperature locally and you do it the right way, you can know an awful lot about a person and their physiology.</p>

How 'High-Performance Clothing' Will Power Your Phone And Monitor Your Health

<p>Carroll's research group at Wake Forest University developed a flexible fabric that makes electricity from heat or movement. It could revolutionize cheap, renewable <keyword id="6357014" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="energy">energy</keyword>.</p>
<p>Thermoelectrics are not exactly new, but usually made of materials that are brittle, heavy, and expensive. </p>
<p>Carroll's fabric, on the other hand, is lightweight, feels like wool felt, and can be wrapped around surfaces or even sewn into clothing.  </p>
<p>While energy can't be "created" this fabric can essentially pull electricity out of thin air, from heat and movement.</p>
<p>The fabric Carroll's group has can turn heat — from your body, the sun, anywhere — into usable electricity.  </p>
<p>And unlike anything ever before, it can simultaneously collect <keyword id="44011" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="power">power</keyword> from vibrations or movement — letting your smartphone case bounce on a carseat during a long drive could charge your phone. So could a shirt flapping in the wind. </p>
<p>Listening to Carroll, you get the sense that this power felt is going to be everywhere. It can be wrapped around your house, and every appliance inside it. Before you know it eager smartphone users will be fighting over heating grates instead of outlets.  </p>
<p>We talked to Carroll about the fabric that soon may be stitched into every shirt, lying under every car hood and wrapped around every house.</p>
<p><strong>Business Insider: Can you explain how this works?</strong></p>
<p><strong>David Carroll:</strong> Thermoelectrics work like this: If you grab a bar of metal at one end, the metal under your hand begins to heat up and that makes the electrons there move faster.  And some of those move down to the other end where the temperature's cooler and so now you have more electrons at one side of the bar than the other. And that gives you a voltage and that voltage can be used to drive things.  </p>
<p>So in order to get really good thermoelectrics, we use exotic materials that can move lots and lots of electrons very, very fast, but that don't allow the transfer of heat. These are ceramics.  They're very expensive and they're very exotic. They work very well, but they're just not very useful in the sense that you can't apply them in many of the places where heat sources exist.</p>
<p>For instance, these hard ceramic modules will not do very well in trying to pick up the heat from my body, even though my body produces 100 or 120 watts of energy, or heat power at any given time.</p>
<p><strong>BI: Where did this idea come from?</strong></p>
<p><strong>DC:</strong> Well, originally the idea came from my ten-year-old daughter.</p>
<p>The whole idea was to take isolated heat sources, like a human body or a car or a home sitting in its neighborhood and wrap it in something that would be able to capture the heat better. And so you can't really do that with most thermolectric material — they're not flexible, they're not fabrics. So my daughter, she's very clever and we were talking about this, she said well it would be cool if you could make it flexible. She had the idea of putting it on the back of a phone. She wanted to charge a cellphone with it. </p>

<p><strong>DC:</strong> From a body that is producing 100 to 120 watts of power, you might be able to get one or two watts of power out of that. If you make clothing out of that, that's enough to start running electronics, like cellphones and things of that nature. And we've actually built some of those. We have put our power felt onto T-Shirts, we've put [it on] connectors for the iPod and things like that.</p>
<p>And so it's pretty nice. It's not totally efficient, but it's not meant to be. It's just meant to supplement the <keyword id="28811" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="battery">battery</keyword>.</p>
<p><strong>BI: How much does this cost?</strong></p>
<p><strong>DC:</strong> It's <strong>very, very inexpensive to make</strong>. For something on the order of a quarter, you can use it to cover your laptop computer.</p>
<p>Now the biggest complaint we all have about laptop computers is that the batteries don't last, right? I can't fly from North Carolina to London and work on my computer.</p>
<p>So what if you could extend your battery 30 percent and it only cost you a quarter to do it? See that would make a lot of sense. It's practically free, and the only thing I am doing is giving you a different style of cover than you would normally use.</p>
<p>You could also embed it in your [smartphone] case.  You're maybe adding another dollar to the cost of the case.   </p>
<p>Or if you have a home like my house here in North Carolina — it's been cool here for the last few days — if you look, the home is leaking about a kilowatt or so of power out into the environment. Well I could capture a whole lot of that and run my refrigerator with it.</p>
<p>We already wrap houses in Tyvek [a product from DuPont that insulates houses and reduces heat loss and manages moisture]. So if you could wrap it in something that could do what Tyvek does, but it also produced power — say as much power as the solar cell on top of the roof, then why wouldn't you do it?</p>
<p><strong>BI:  And this is just a fabric we're talking about, right? This can be used in clothing?</strong></p>
<p><strong>DC:</strong> You <strong>can use it in all of the different places you use fabric</strong>. It feels like it, it behaves like it, you can even wash it — haha — we know that by accident.</p>
<p>I had some samples in my pocket and my wife ran it through the washer and dryer. It actually washes just fine.</p>
<p><strong>BI: How efficient is it?</strong></p>
<p><strong>DC:</strong> You can collect somewhere in the neighborhood of one milliwatt or so per square centimeter of the covering.</p>

<p><strong>DC:</strong> Imagine you put this across the back of your phone. You hop in your car and let's say its a nice warm day.</p>
<p>And, the other thing this stuff does is if you flex it, if you make it vibrate, that also collects power. It is both piezoactive [in that it collects power from movement] and thermoelectric at the same time. It's essentially the only material that is, that I know of. So it's kind of cool.</p>
<p>So I hop in my car and my phone battery is running low. I'm going to drive from here down to Raleigh (North Carolina) which is about an hour and a half. I set this on my dashboard, the car vibrates — that generates power. And the dashboard's hot — that also generates power.  From both of those sources I collect additional power and soak that power into my battery. By the time I get into Raleigh my battery has about a 20 percent charge on it.  </p>
<p>It changes the way people use things. </p>
<p><strong>BI: Then all you would have to do in any situation is find some kind of heat source. Even in the wilderness or in an emergency?</strong></p>
<p><strong>DC:</strong> Exactly.</p>
<p>If I go camping and I have a campfire next to my tent and I lay my phone out there next to the campfire and I go to sleep, when I wake up, assuming no one has stolen my phone, I have a charged battery. <strong>So it absorbs energy from the power that surrounds it and puts it back into the battery.</strong></p>
<p>These days if you are at the airport, you hunt around for the outlet to plug your computer or phone into. But it could be that's not what you hunt for. Instead you hunt for the heat register, because that is where your power source is. </p>
<p><strong>BI:<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> What would you most like to see power felt do?</span></strong></p>
<p><strong>DC:</strong> That's an interesting question. I look at it kinda like the cellphones are right now. People think of cellphones, you remember when the Motorola RAZR ... we thought that was revolutionary? But the revolution didn't come until they got really smart. An iPhone is a revolution away from a RAZR.   </p>
<p>And it can do a lot of stuff. So smartphones became ubiquitous. They became invisible. You turn your alarm in your home on with it. You turn your car on with it. You look up stuff on Google. All your contacts are in it and you use it as a camera. It actually is integrated into your life. In a way that you don't expect, in a way that you don't always notice.</p>
<p>Well power is the same thing. Power exists all around you. I'm standing in my kitchen, and I have power electronics all around me. I've got a microwave oven, I have a stove, I have a refrigerator. All of these things are a part of my life in an invisible way. Power felt is really meant to be invisible.</p>
<p><strong>The revolution it presents is more power</strong> — a power density greater than what we have today. So laptops last longer, electronics last longer, things like that. You use power differently; you expect to collect power from your surroundings. You recognize now that power can be soaked up and placed into your electronics, like a sponge would soak up water. So that new point of view, that new way of seeing the world, is what changes stuff.</p>
<p>Power isn't just the thing that comes out of the socket in your house anymore. It is something that you as an individual have access to. <strong>You now have a power-generating device in your hand. It doesn't store power; it makes power. That's what makes it different.</strong></p>
<p><strong>BI: So how long before I can become an off-the-grid human? How long will it be before some of these products come to market?</strong></p>
<p><strong>DC:</strong> We hope to have the first ones in the market next year. We are in the process of signing a contract with a company that is commercializing the stuff. That company has some fairly big backers behind it — large companies that you have heard of. I can't give names but let's just say the chances are extremely good that they make something that's in your house right now.</p>
