Delhi Chief Minister <keyword id="19901384" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arvind-Kejriwal" source="keywords">Arvind Kejriwal</keyword> will return to <keyword id="56350" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tihar-jail" source="Orion">Tihar jail</keyword> on Sunday as his interim bail in a money laundering case linked to the alleged Delhi liquor policy scam ends on Saturday (June 1). Kejriwal was given interim bail by the <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supreme-court" source="keywords">Supreme Court</keyword> to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections on May 10 and was asked to surrender to Tihar jail on June 2. The Delhi CM had earlier moved the Supreme Court for an extension of interim bail. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court rejected his plea, stating that since he was given liberty to move the trial court for regular bail, the plea here is not maintainable. Meanwhile, Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court on Saturday reserved the order on the interim bail plea moved by Kejriwal, citing medical reasons in a money laundering case related to the alleged excise policy scam. The court fixed June 5 for the pronouncement of the order on the plea seeking 7-day bail, while refused to pass the order today itself as requested by Kejriwal's Lawyer. Senior Advocate N Hariharan, who appeared for Kejriwal, submitted that the interim bail was to campaign for his party (the Am Aadmi Party), which is a national party. "I am out for 20 days and had I not done it, you would've said see he didn't campaign and fell ill. It was a lot of stress due to the campaigning and you know that stress is a aggrevator of diabetes. What was alarming was that keto levels rose in the urine. The aspect of concern is the high level of sugar and the keto numbers," Kejriwal's advocate submitted in the plea. Appearing for the Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and Additional Solicitor General SV Raju submitted that Arvind Kejriwal suppressed facts including about his health conditions. During preliminary arguments, ED lawyers stated that they have objections to filing interim bail as well. This court cannot modify the Supreme Court order. He's on interim bail because the SC granted it, what he is asking here is an extension of the Supreme Court order," the ED lawyers submitted. "This interim bail plea is required to be dismissed as it is full of suppression of facts. The Supreme Court had granted Liberty to him that he can file regular bail but the liberty to seek an extension of interim bail was not granted to him. He has said that these tests require 7 days, but the nature of the test has been suppressed," they further stated. ED also raised maintainability issues on interim bail plea and submitted that instead of getting a medical test done, he was travelling across. Medical tests would take more than one hour. ED further submitted that the applicant in fact has gained 1 kg weight and falsely claimed that he has lost 7 kg weight. The Registrar of the Supreme Court has passed a speaking order and the same has been suppressed by them. There is a reason for suppression and it is because he had been travelling for campaigning purposes, but he didn't get the tests done then, ED said. Recently Kejriwal through his legal team filed two different bail applications before the concerned court. His regular bail plea is listed for a hearing on June 7, 2024. Earlier, Arvind Kejriwal posted an emotional message on Friday and said that he is proud that he is going to jail to save the country from dictatorship. In his video message, Kejriwal said, "Tomorrow the 21 days are getting over, the day after tomorrow I have to surrender. I don't know how long they will keep me in jail this time. But my spirits are high. I am going to jail to save the country from dictatorship. I am proud of this. They tried to break me many times, tried to make me bow down but I didn't." Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21 in connection with a money laundering probe relating to alleged irregularities in the now-cancelled <keyword id="20106989" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Excise-Policy" source="keywords">Delhi excise policy</keyword> 2021-22.

Delhi excise policy case: Arvind Kejriwal to return to Tihar Jail today, no relief from Court

Phogat, who was disqualified from the Paris Olympics for being found 100 grams overweight ahead of her women's 50kg final, was at the forefront of a lengthy protest alleging government inaction against former Wrestling Federation of India head Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who was accused of sexual harassment by women wrestlers.

Now though he has been given a bail there is a conspiracy to keep him in jail," he said. "It is a conspiracy to finish a democratically elected government and a political party," Bhattacharya said, urging the people to give their reply to the BJP in upcoming assembly polls in Haryana, Maharashtra and Jharkhand by defeating the BJP. Communist Party of India general secretary D Raja also demanded the immediate release of the Delhi chief minister, and expressed concerns about his health. "After BJP's coming to power, democracy is no longer 'for' the people, democracy is 'far' from people, democracy is not 'of' the people, it is 'off' the people, and it is not 'by' the people, it is 'buy' the people," Raja said. "Kejriwal is one of the victims of the central agencies used by the Modi government. Can we allow this? How much longer can we tolerate this situation in the country. Kejriwal is not well and his health has deteriorated," he said. AAP Delhi convener Gopal Rai said Kejriwal's sugar levels are going down in custody. "He was granted bail by trial court and Supreme Court but a conspiracy was hatched to keep him in jail. Why does BJP want to put opposition leaders in jail? Who is responsible for the deaths of the three UPSC aspirants?" Rai said. "When LG is being asked about the incident, he is quiet. The BJP, which is demanding Kejriwal's resignation, snatched away the powers of the Delhi government. Tiwari said it was "height" of inhumanity to keep Kejriwal in jail despite his medical reports showing dip in his blood sugar to a dangerous level. The Congress and AAP had fought the recent Lok Sabha elections in Delhi in alliance. AAP had fielded candidates on four seats and Congress on three seats. However, the alliance drew a blank. Gogoi warned the BJP and its leaders saying they cannot scare the opposition whether it is AAP, Congress or any other party. "Their illusion lies shattered with this rally. If fair Lok Sabha elections had been held in 2024, the BJP would have been in opposition and we would have been in power. The BJP-led government is not going to complete its five-year term," he stressed. Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case linked to the alleged excise policy scam and has been granted bail by the Supreme Court. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said politicians used to scratch each other's back to help each other while indulging in scams but this has changed in the last 10 years under the government headed by Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword>. "Should he (Kejriwal) be let off because he is a chief minister and not a common man," he asked, alleging that the Delhi chief minister is a kingpin in the corruption case being probed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). With opposition parties, including the Congress, rallying to Kejriwal's defence and describing his arrest as part of the Union government's crackdown on their leaders, the BJP spokesperson said it is a case of thieves displaying brotherhood. As Delhi government minister Atishi questioned the arrest of a chief minister and expressed concern about his safety as he has 'Z plus' security, he hit back, saying it shows their sense of entitlement. She is saying how a CM can be arrested as he is not a common man, Patra said, noting that Kejriwal once named the likes of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Lalu Prasad Yadav as corrupt and would ask when people will start going to the jail. The AAP leader then claimed he has entered politics to cleanse it but began living in a palace and moving around in a security cover, he said. "It is high time that people who are embroiled in corruption are arrested," Patra asserted. Patra also played a statement of Congress leader Ajay Maken in which the he had lashed out at Kejriwal for the alleged excise scam and accused him of using Rs 100 crore collected from it to harm the Congress in the Goa assembly polls in 2022. Even the Supreme Court has spoken about a money trail of over Rs 338 crore while denying bail to AAP leader <keyword id="19909124" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manish-sisodia" source="keywords">Manish Sisodia</keyword> in the same case, he said. Following Kejriwal's arrest Thursday evening, the AAP had given a nationwide call for protest against the BJP. BJP leaders have called the protest a drama and "celebration of corruption".

The Indian Rupee lost 6 paisa or 0.08 per cent to close at Rs 79.86 to the US Dollar. Dow Jones had a torrid week and was under pressure. It lost on three of the five days and Friday was literally a meltdown when it lost just over 1,000 points. It lost 1,008.38 points after <keyword id="45672" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="fed" source="Orion">FED</keyword> chairman <keyword id="1727754" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="jerome-powell" source="Orion">Jerome Powell</keyword> reiterated that they are on track to reach interest rates of between 3.75 per cent - 4 per cent by the end of the calendar year. This means that the next hike in September would be 75 basis points and the next one in November may bring a 50-basis points hike. The last and final meeting in December would decide where interest rates end at the end of the year. Currently interest rates in the US are in the range of 2.25-2.50 per cent. This statement by Powell, caused markets to plummet as over the last fortnight they had built in a softer rate hike. The impact of what happened in the US on Friday will be felt over the world when they resume trading on Monday. Our markets are closed for a holiday on Wednesday the 31st of August on account of Ganesh Chaturthi, the day when Lord Ganesh is brought home. It used to be a celebration in just Mumbai and Maharashtra, but is now a national event. This would break trading momentum and being a mid-week holiday, any meaningful rally would be difficult to sustain. In primary market news, it was a blockbuster Friday with one listing and one issue closing for subscription, and both doing very well. The listing from Syrma SGS Technology Limited which had issued shares at Rs 220 closed day one at Rs 313.05. The script gained Rs 93.05 or 42.5 per cent. The share saw robust trading and it was a little surprising that at the end of the day, no names were reported of people who had bought the stock. The issue from Dreamfolks Limited which had tapped the markets with its offer for sale of 172.42 lac shares in a price band of Rs 308-326 closed. The issue was open from Wednesday the 26th of August to Friday the 28th of August. The issue was subscribed 56.67 times with QIB portion subscribed 70.53 times, HNI portion subscribed 37.66 times and Retail portion subscribed 43.60 times. The issue got a favourable rub-off from the subscription and performance of Syrma SGS. Whether this replicates in future issues would be something that would be keenly watched. Issues to open from 1st September would see a change in the way money gets blocked against bids made through brokers. It was witnessed in almost all issues over the last 12 months, that investors bid for shares on the last day and then took a call depending on the final subscription whether they would block their money against the bid or allow the same to lapse. This saw many IPOs which were subscribed to actually end as undersubscribed and getting bailed out by reducing the offer for sale component. In the case of one issue, the merchant bankers had to contribute to the shortfall through the underwriting agreement. This would no longer be possible. It would be interesting times at the markets. Coming to the week ahead, we have a mid-week Wednesday trading holiday which would break the momentum. The previous week's top of 60,400 and 18,000 would act as very strong resistances on any upside that the markets make while levels of 58,200 and 17,400 would act as immediate support. However, if markets break these support levels, we would have another sharp fall of maybe another 2 per cent in the benchmark indices happening rapidly. The new support could then be around 17,000 on NIFTY and 57,000 on BSESENSEX. The big concern would now be the FED announcement and the fact that the US market which fell 1,000 points on Friday is now becoming a cause for concern. The strategy would be to buy on really sharp dips and sell on any rallies.  Within minutes of Sidhu's resignation, <keyword id="6356115" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="AAP">AAP</keyword>'s Punjab convenor Sucha Singh Chhotepur and AAP's state incharge Sanjay Singh hailed Sidhu's "courageous" decision and said the party was "looking forward" to welcome him.
