The panel of state finance ministers is likely to recommend a uniform <keyword id="6354679" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="gst" source="Orion">GST</keyword> levy of 28 per cent on <keyword id="6422069" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Online-gaming" source="Orion">online gaming</keyword> irrespective of whether it is a game of skill or game of chance, sources said. However, it is likely to suggest a revised formula for calculating the amount on which the Goods and Services Tax (GST) would be levied. Currently, online gaming attracts 18 per cent GST. The tax is levied on gross gaming revenue, which is the fees charged by online gaming portals. Sources said that the GoM report is almost final and would be submitted to the GST Council soon for consideration. The Group of Ministers (GoM), chaired by <keyword id="6355772" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="meghalaya" source="Orion">Meghalaya</keyword> Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, had in its earlier report submitted to the Council in June suggested a 28 per cent GST on on the full value of the consideration, including contest entry fee, paid by the player, without making a distinction such as games of skill or chance. However, the Council had asked the GoM to reconsider its report. Following that the GoM took the views of the Attorney General and also met stakeholders from the online gaming industry. Although the GoM deliberated on separate definitions for 'games of skill' and 'games of chance', it finally decided to tax both as demerit goods attracting a 28 per cent GST. The message has to be clear that online gaming is a demerit good. However, some relaxation in valuation methods could be provided, sources told PTI. The GoM report in June had suggested that the GST should be levied on the entire amount received as consideration from the participant. Charging 28 per cent GST on the entire amount, which a player deposits for a game for both categories of online game, would reduce the prize money left for distribution and drive away players from legitimate tax deducting portals. This may also encourage online gamers towards unlawful portals that do not deduct tax, sector experts had said. Online gaming witnessed a spurt during the time of Covid lockdown with the number of users in India rising substantially. As per a KPMG report, the online gaming sector would grow to Rs 29,000 crore by 2024-25 from Rs 13,600 crore in 2021. The feature is activated by pressing a single button in the Anchor app which will eliminate background noise, bringing the user's voice to the forefront, according to a blog post. Users can simply record in the Anchor mobile app and tap 'Enhance' to significantly reduce background noise for a clearer-sounding episode. So, if a user wants to record their latest episode on a crowded convention floor or at home with barking dogs or crying babies, they can, said the blog post. In addition, the Anchor app allows users to toggle the feature on and off during playback to compare the results. However, Spotify is not the only Big Tech company investing in voice isolation, as AI advances improve filtration without costly dynamic microphones, according to the report. Mukesh Ambani surpassed Gautam Adani, who dropped to the second spot, in spite of only a 2% growth in his wealth in the last one year. However, their average wealth has decreased by 9.3%. The India Rich List added 273 new entrants and 38 new billionaires over the last year. The number of dollar billionaires also went up to 259, up 38 as compared to last year. “The trends prove that India is a shining moon in a world that is staring at recession. While the China Rich List has dropped 10% for each of this year and last year, both in terms of average wealth and in terms of the number of people that make the list. India is closing the gap,” said Anas Rahman Junaid, MD and Chief Researcher, Hurun India. India has 259 billionaires, up 38 compared to last year. While industrial products, metals &amp; mining added the greatest number of new entrants to the list. Pharma still holds the numero uno position and contributed 133 entrants to the list. “Over the past five years, many entrepreneurs have witnessed extraordinary wealth growth, some experiencing an astonishing 1,000% surge. Construction and engineering emerge as the top gainers in the top 100 list, followed closely by pharmaceuticals which has a cut-off of ₹20,000 crore,” said Anirudha Taparia, co-founder and joint CEO, 360 ONE Wealth. Funding winter &amp; founders’ wealth While 264 in the Indian rich list saw their wealth drop in the last one year, there were as many as 55 dropouts. The most notable of the dropouts is Byju Raveendran. The founder of edtech Byju’s exited the list on the back of investor markdowns. The funding winter and its ripple effects led to startup founders on the list experiencing a collective wealth dip of ₹85,000 crore. Recent policies, like the retrospective GST imposition on gaming companies and the angel tax and so on, could potentially hinder long-term wealth generation by startups, Hurun said. However, a few IPOs that stumbled last year did make a comeback. As new-age internet companies gain in value, entrepreneurs like Deepinder Goyal of Zomato and Yashish Dahiya of PB Fintech have seen their wealth increase by over 70%. Startup wealth creation will persist, albeit within a changing landscape, Junaid said. The IPO stars: Public issues and rich list debuts The stock markets also rewarded many public debuts and made their founders into billionaires. Ramesh Kunhikannan’s Kaynes Technology made a strong stock market debut. And he entered the list with a wealth of ₹8,200 crore. The spectacular listing gains provided by stock market debuts of many companies have pulled their owners into the rich list. Some of them include Jagdish Prasad Chowdhary of Titagarh Wagons, Ranjit Pendurthi of Archean Chemical Industries and Ajay P Thakker &amp; family of Jupiter Life Line Hospitals. Pavan Kumar Bajaj and Karan Bajaj of Electronics Mart India and Harsha Engineers’ Harish Rangwala and Rajendra Shantilal Shah too entered the coveted list of richest Indians after their stocks skyrocketed on debut. Edtech startup Classlogic raises USD 100K in seed funding round

According to The Wall Street Journal, as several of the world's biggest tech companies are laying off employees, TikTok is in the middle of a three-year hiring push. "We have always been more cautious in terms of recruitment. We're still hiring, although at the pace that we think has to correspond with the global challenges that we're facing," TikTok Chief Executive Shou Zi Chew was quoted as saying. TikTok is also hiring at its major hub in Singapore, according to the report. The video platform plans to increase the size of its biggest American engineering hub, which already has more than 1,000 engineers. Moreover, TikTok recruiters have approached people recently laid off from rival companies including Meta and Twitter, said the report. The company also intends to expand its commercialisation team, which will figure out how to make money from the app, as well as its nascent e-commerce team. It also plans to hire contractors to monitor the app for inappropriate videos, both in the US and at a content-moderation hub in Dublin, Ireland., the report added. TikTok plans to hire 3,000 engineers

The stock is now ₹26 lower than the issue price of ₹577, disappointing investors and the grey markets which predicted that it will make its debut at a ₹40 premium. This is lower than the grey market expectation of ₹40 premium per share. The grey market is an unofficial market where the IPO shares are traded before they are listed on the stock exchanges. Meanwhile, the broader markets also opened lower on Monday following weak global markets and ahead of November’s retail inflation data to be released later in the day. The market capitalisation of Uniparts India stands at ₹2,595 crore, according to BSE data. The IPO saw strong demand from non-institutional and qualified institutional investors as they subscribed 67.14 and 17.86 times respectively. Overall, the IPO was subscribed 25.32 times. Uniparts India shares fall deeper into the red after listing at a discount

Flows into equity mutual fund schemes tanked in November to ₹2,258 crore as against ₹9,390 crore in October, according to AMFI, the regulatory body for the mutual funds sector. Meanwhile, debt schemes of mutual funds, which are considered relatively safer, witnessed inflows of ₹3,668 crore during the month against outflows of ₹2,817 crore in the previous month. “Market continues to react to global headwinds. Rate hikes will continue to impact global markets but not for long, irrespective of that, (the) mutual fund industry has performed well. There have been outflows from the retail schemes as people are encashing profits,” said NS Venkatesh, chief executive at AMFI in a statement. He cited the festive season as the reason for people taking out profits. The net assets under management (AUM) of the mutual fund industry stood at ₹40.37 lakh crore as on November 31, 2022. On the bright side, SIP (systematic investment plan) inflows in November were at an all-time high at ₹13,306 crore. In October, the inflows were ₹13,040 crore. In November, mutual funds deployed ₹1,700 crore into the market while foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought ₹34,900 crore in the Indian secondary market, said a report by Nuvama Institutional Equities (previously known as Edelweiss Institutional Equities). According to data compiled by Finbold, a breakdown of the market share indicates that Facebook began the year at 76.85 per cent while in November, the value stood at 67.73 per cent. Elsewhere, in January, Twitter had a market share of 7.16 per cent while as of November, the figure stood at 11.16 per cent. In recent months, both platforms have recorded a fluctuation in the market share, with Twitter appearing to have the upper hand from a growth perspective amid ongoing internal administrative changes. "From the data, Facebook remains the dominant social media platform, but Twitter is winning the race to expand its market share. Twitter's share has spiked in correlation with the company's acquisition by Tesla CEO <keyword id="364027" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="musk" source="Orion">Musk</keyword>, who has already begun implementing several changes at the company," the findings showed. Interestingly, internal reports, also confirmed by Elon Musk, indicate that Twitter's daily user growth attained an all-time high during the first full week of Muska¿s tenure. "The performance appears to quell initial fears that Twitter might experience a mass exodus of users with Musk's takeover," said the Finbold. Based on the market share data across the year, it can be assumed that Musk has influenced the numbers; for instance, the share spiked around May when the deal was first announced but appeared to plunge after he initially backed out. Besides the Musk factor and promises to make a change, Twitter's growth can also be attributed to elements like changing the design. "Interestingly, Twitter has previously been scrutinized for attempting to emulate Facebook, especially with the rollout of its stories-like Fleets. However, Twitter resorted to shutting down the feature due to a lack of user interest, said the report. Twitter's global market share grows by 55% as Musk takes over

The Canada Pension Plan, which includes the combination of the base CPP and additional CPP accounts, achieved five- and ten-year annualized net returns of 8.5% and 10.1%, respectively, it said. However, the winemaker was severely impacted due to Covid-19 because of which it had delivered a loss of ₹15 crore in FY20. “In the first half of calendar year 2020, Covid-19 spread to a majority of countries across the world, including India. The Covid-19 pandemic has had, and may continue to have, significant repercussions across local, national and global economies and financial markets,” said the company in DRHP. Adverse climate conditions faced by farmers while harvesting is among key risks that would impact the quality of grapes, which is the primary raw material. Dharmaj Crop Guard is engaged in the business of manufacturing, distributing, and marketing a wide range of agro chemical formulations such as insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, plant growth regulator, micro fertilisers and antibiotics to the B2B and B2C segments. It sells crop protection solutions to farmers to aid them in preventing crops from being damaged by insects. Also, the company exports its products to over 20 countries in Latin America, East Africa, Middle East and far East Asia. Since the company’s revenues are dependent on farmers buying pesticides, any changes in farmers income, commodity prices, reduction in government subsidies and incentives can adversely impact its business. “Any changes in the government policies relating to the agriculture sector such as the reduction of government expenditure towards agriculture, the withdrawal of or changes in incentives and subsidies provided to farmers, export restrictions on crops, adverse changes in commodity prices or minimum support prices could affect the ability of farmers to spend on crop protection products, which in turn could adversely affect our business and results of operations,” said the company in its draft red herring prospectus. Dharmaj Crop Guard competes with the likes of Rallis India and India Pesticides among others. The Sensex closed 274 points higher at 61,419 while the Nifty50 ended the day 84 points up at 18,244. The PSU bank index led with gains of 1.66%, followed by the metals index, which posted the second best sectoral gains today at 0.89%. Overall, it was a good day for almost all sectors except realty, which was the only sectoral index to end the day in the red with a decline of 1.2%. Gains in <keyword id="35189" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="asian-markets" source="Orion">Asian markets</keyword> also supported the domestic market even as fears over economic slowdown due to rising Covid-19 cases in China persisted. Japan’s Nikkei 225 closed 0.61% higher, Taiwan TSEC 50 Index ended up 0.64%, China’s Shanghai SE Composite Index ended 0.13% higher. Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was the only one in the red, declining 1.23%. “Asian stock markets mostly recouped early losses on Tuesday, supported by improved sentiment for China shares, but concerns linger that Beijing may reimpose strict Covid curbs while European shares edged higher on Tuesday, supported by a recovery in commodity stocks including oil,” said Deepak Jasani, head of retail research at HDFC Securities. Brent crude oil prices rose after Saudi Arabia denied reports of output cuts, edging near $88 a barrel. IndusInd Bank, JSW Steel, NTPC and HDFC Life Insurance were the top gainers on the 50-stock Nifty50 index. On the other hand, Paytm lost the most with its share price declining over 11%, taking its losses in the last one week to over 25%. “While it is too early to understand the exact customer segments and target markets that Jio Financial plans to cater to, it seems clear that it will be focused on consumer and merchant lending, which is the mainstay of NBFCs like Bajaj Finance and fintechs like Paytm,” said Suresh Ganapathy, analyst, Macquarie Capital Securities. In October, Reliance Industries announced its intent to demerge its financial services business and name it Jio Financial Services, and subsequently list it on the stock exchanges. According to the Macquarie report, this could create India’s fifth largest financial services firm.
