In 2017, one tech services major sacked women who had returned from maternity leave and another one in Kolkata stopped providing women employees transport to and from the campus. The “chatter around moonlighting” has only come as the latest pain point for an industry that has found it hard to manage its people or keep them happy, which is perhaps why they rely so heavily on freshers. Moonlighting is a problem that may have surfaced after the pandemic started in 2020 and work-from-home gave people the latitude to explore other avenues of income since they were not sitting in office and saving on time. There is a deeper malaise that tech companies in India need to address upfront as the Big Techs are doing in Silicon Valley. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Problem of disgruntled employees is not new" comment="subhead" text="Problem of disgruntled employees is not new">Problem of disgruntled employees is not new</cmsannotation> From times immemorial, the IT industry in India has been battling high attrition levels and margin pressure due to wage hikes. Given the sheer number of employees that each of these companies have, it is hard to create a sense of ownership, loyalty and engagement. Nearly two decades ago, at a town hall of a large IT company, the much respected founder was asked why the variable pay was not paid out despite the very high growth trajectory of the company – those days some IT companies were growing by 100% year-on-year. The venerated founder told him that the company had its own internal goals, which were not met, therefore, the variable pay was not given. Wages at IT services companies are a lever to manage margins and to keep costs under check, thousands of freshers are hired each year. Between 2012 and 2022 the salary of the CEO of Infosys grew from ₹80 lakh to ₹79.75 crore, while that of freshers rose from ₹2.75 lakh to ₹3.6 lakh. The story is no different for the other big IT services players (see table). Town Halls, Quora and Glassdoor are a testimony of this trend. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Are employee unions the answer?" comment="subhead" text="Are employee unions the answer?">Are employee unions the answer?</cmsannotation> In a bid to improve the working conditions of the IT and ITES sectors and make these companies adopt better human resource policies, employees came together to form a union in November 2017. The labour department in Karnataka certified the formation of the Karnataka State IT/ITES Employees Union (KITU) under the Trade Union Act 1926 and Karnataka Trade Unions Regulations 1958. The first such trade union was born in the midst of large scale retrenchment by the industry in 2017. The trade unions never took off as few employees were willing to join the union. But it does not take away the problem people have with their employers. One would wonder why would white collar workers want to come together and fight for their rights considering they are already privileged and enjoy “higher salaries” and free lunches? There is a reason as tech workers across the globe are pushing back practices of their employers be it on their business practices or treatment of outspoken employees. Tech workers across Silicon Valley too are looking at organising themselves to push their employers to adopt policies that are more inclusive. An <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2021/01/26/tech-unions-explainer/">article by The Washington Post</a> in April 2021 says, “Union advocates say discrimination faced by women and people of colour at the tech companies proves the need for stronger worker protections. Unions can also be a way for workers to have their voices heard about the issues they have with decisions executives are making, such as — which politicians to give money to or whether to sell software to the military and police.” Unlike the industrial age, the white collar unions are today seeking answers to bigger questions on equity, treatment of employees and broader company policies. Moonlighting is a problem that may have surfaced after the pandemic started in 2020 and work-from-home gave people the latitude to explore other avenues of income since they were not sitting in office and saving on time. There is a deeper malaise that tech companies in India need to address upfront as the Big Techs are doing in Silicon Valley. Problem of disgruntled employees is not new From times immemorial, the IT industry in India has been battling high attrition levels and margin pressure due to wage hikes. Given the sheer number of employees that each of these companies have, it is hard to create a sense of ownership, loyalty and engagement. Nearly two decades ago, at a town hall of a large IT company, the much respected founder was asked why the variable pay was not paid out despite the very high growth trajectory of the company – those days some IT companies were growing by 100% year-on-year. The venerated founder told him that the company had its own internal goals, which were not met, therefore, the variable pay was not given. Wages at IT services companies are a lever to manage margins and to keep costs under check, thousands of freshers are hired each year. Between 2012 and 2022 the salary of the CEO of Infosys grew from ₹80 lakh to ₹79.75 crore, while that of freshers rose from ₹2.75 lakh to ₹3.6 lakh. The story is no different for the other big IT services players (see table). Town Halls, Quora and Glassdoor are a testimony of this trend. Are employee unions the answer? In a bid to improve the working conditions of the IT and ITES sectors and make these companies adopt better human resource policies, employees came together to form a union in November 2017. The labour department in Karnataka certified the formation of the Karnataka State IT/ITES Employees Union (KITU) under the Trade Union Act 1926 and Karnataka Trade Unions Regulations 1958. The first such trade union was born in the midst of large scale retrenchment by the industry in 2017. The trade unions never took off as few employees were willing to join the union. But it does not take away the problem people have with their employers. One would wonder why would white collar workers want to come together and fight for their rights considering they are already privileged and enjoy “higher salaries” and free lunches? There is a reason as tech workers across the globe are pushing back practices of their employers be it on their business practices or treatment of outspoken employees. Tech workers across Silicon Valley too are looking at organising themselves to push their employers to adopt policies that are more inclusive. An <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2021/01/26/tech-unions-explainer/">article by The Washington Post</a> in April 2021 says, “Union advocates say discrimination faced by women and people of colour at the tech companies proves the need for stronger worker protections. Unions can also be a way for workers to have their voices heard about the issues they have with decisions executives are making, such as — which politicians to give money to or whether to sell software to the military and police.” Unlike the industrial age, the white collar unions are today seeking answers to bigger questions on equity, treatment of employees and broader company policies.

Amid the brouhaha over alleged forced termination at edtech major <keyword id="2900267" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="byju" source="Orion">BYJU</keyword>'s, its founder and CEO Byju <keyword id="299516" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="raveendran" source="Orion">Raveendran</keyword> on Monday told employees that there is a huge price to pay for walking on the path to profitability and the company will part ways with 5 per cent or 2,500 employees to "avoid role duplication across our businesses". In a letter to employees seen by IANS, Raveendran said that bringing those who are parting ways "back by putting our company on a sustainable growth path will now be the number 1 priority for me". "I want to emphasise that the overall job cuts are not more than five per cent of our total strength," he said. Raveendran wrote that while nothing can really compensate for their loss, "we have made available the best possible exit package to you which includes extended medical insurance coverage for you and your family members, outplacement services led by some of the industry's finest recruitment specialists, fast-track full-and-final settlement, and a special provision to allow you to look for jobs while on our payroll". BYJU's recently announced to a reduction of 5 per cent of its 50,000-strong workforce (about 2,500 people), which will be "rationalised across product, content, media, and technology teams in a phased manner" in a bid to consolidate its India business. The Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union (KITU) last week claimed that BYJU's, after <keyword id="6357416" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="thiruvananthapuram" source="Orion">Thiruvananthapuram</keyword> in Kerala, was forcing employees at its Bengaluru headquarters to resign. Raveendran said that some business decisions have to be taken to protect the health of the larger organisation, and pay heed to the constraints imposed by external macroeconomic conditions. "Over the past couple of weeks, you would have read or heard about our plans to rationalise our team size. Some of you, I understand, might be confused about this or maybe hearing conflicting statements," he said. He said that adverse macroeconomic factors have changed the business landscape, compelling tech companies around the world to focus on sustainability and capital-efficient growth. "BYJU'S is no exception to this trend. Our rapid organic and inorganic growth has created some inefficiencies, redundancies and duplication within our organisation, that we need to rationalise to realise this. At the same time, we need to continue to realign our resources towards innovation and future-growth oriented projects," said Raveendran. Around 140 employees from the 170-strong workforce at Technopark have been asked to leave. BYJU's has nearly 3,000 employees in Kerala. In an earlier statement, the company said it is "absolutely false" that BYJU's is forcing employees to resign. Raveendran said that "I am truly sorry to those who will have to leave BYJU's". "You are not just a name to me. You are not a number. You are not just five per cent of my company. You are five per cent of me," he told employees in the letter. The duration of the internship is six months offered in two terms -- Term 1 (January to June) and Term 2 (July to December). Due to COVID-19 pandemic, the online application for Term 2 has not opened yet, and the ministry will soon announce the dates. Interested candidates can keep a check on their <a href="https://www.internship.mea.gov.in/">official website</a>. The ministry will select 30 interns and they shall report to, work under close supervision of the concerned head of division (HOD). They may be required to conduct research, write reports, analyse evolving developments, or carry out any other task entrusted to them by the HOD. All the interns will get a monthly stipend of ₹10,000 per month. Candidates will have to report to the Delhi office during the course of their internship. The ministry will bear the travel cost for outstation candidates who will have to fly to Delhi from their home state. Eligibility criteria for the internship — 1. All the candidates should be an Indian citizen. 2. The maximum age limit for the candidates is 25 years as on December 31, of the year of the internship. 3. Candidates should have a minimum educational qualification of a graduate degree from a recognised university. 4. Candidates belonging to these states are only eligible for the opportunity — Term 1 — Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andaman &amp; Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Delhi. Term 2 — Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, Puducherry. 5. 30%-50% seats are reserved for women candidates.
