Descendants of royal families, who are contesting the 2024 <keyword id="19923279" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha-elections" source="keywords">Lok Sabha elections</keyword> on <keyword id="19894848" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP" source="keywords">BJP</keyword> tickets, have performed fairly well with a majority of them leading with a huge margin on their respective seats. <keyword id="29632" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jyotiraditya-scindia" source="Orion">Jyotiraditya Scindia</keyword>, the scion of the erstwhile royal family of Gwalior who severed his 18-year-long ties with the <keyword id="19895371" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Congress" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Congress">Congress</keyword> in 2020 and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is leading with over 5 lakh votes from the Guna parliamentary constituency in <keyword id="19898705" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Madhya-Pradesh" source="keywords">Madhya Pradesh</keyword>. The Union civil aviation minister is pitted against the Congress' Rao Yadvendra Singh. This is the first time in his political career that Scindia (53) is contesting as a BJP candidate from Guna, which was earlier represented by his late father Madhavrao Scindia and late grandmother Vijayaraje Scindia. The BJP is having a clean sweep in Madhya Pradesh by securing huge vote margins on all 29 seats. Another royal candidate Dushyant Singh, Prince of Dholpur state in <keyword id="19898913" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajasthan" source="keywords">Rajasthan</keyword>, who has been elected four times in the past, is also leading from Jhalawar-Baran with over 3.5 lakh votes against his rival Urmila Jain of the Congress. Mahima Kumari Mewar, the wife of <keyword id="21351143" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vishvaraj-singh" source="keywords">Vishvaraj Singh</keyword> Mewar who is a descendant of Maharana Pratap, is also leading from Rajsamand Lok Sabha seat in Rajasthan with around 4 lakh votes against her nearest rival Dr Damodar Gurjar of the Congress. In Rajasthan, the BJP has won one seat and is leading on 13 out of 25 parliamentary constituencies. In the south, <keyword id="20932800" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="yaduveer-krishnadatta-chamaraja-wadiyar" source="keywords">Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar</keyword>, 31-year-old US-educated who was crowned as the titular head of the erstwhile Mysuru royal family in 2015 making him the 27th 'King' of the Wadiyar dynasty, is a BJP candidate for the Mysuru Lok Sabha seat. Yaduveer is leading with over 1.3 lakh votes against Congress' candidates M Lakshmana from this seat. As per the latest trend, the BJP has won one seat and leading on 15 seats out of 28 parliamentary seats in Karnataka. The Congress is leading on 10 seats. In Odisha, while contesting as a BJP candidate, Malvika Devi, wife of former MP Arka Keshari Deo, a member of the royal family of Kalahandi district, is leading with about one lakh votes against her nearest rival Lambodar Nial of Biju Janata Dal (BJD). The BJP has put up a significant performance in Odisha as its candidates are leading on 19 out of 21 seats. Among the Northeastern states, Kriti Singh Debbarma, a member of the Tripura's erstwhile royal family, who is a joint candidate of the regional party Tipra Motha and the BJP, is leading with over 5.5 lakh votes on Tripura East seat from her nearest rival Rajendra Reang of the Communist Party of India (CPI). Tripura has two parliamentary constituencies and the BJP is leading on both of them. Among the losing royal challengers of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections is Vikramaditya Singh, who is contesting from the Congress from the Mandi Lok Sabha seat. Singh, the heir of the Rampur royal family and son of the late Virbhadra Singh, a six-time chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, is trailing as his rival, actress-turned-politician Kangna Ranaut of the BJP, is ahead of him with over 70,000 votes. Another royal candidate is Rajmata Amrita Roy from the Krishnanagar seat in West Bengal, who is also trailing by over 50,000 votes against Trinamool Congress' (TMC) Mahua Moitra. Roy, married to the family of Maharaja Krishnachandra Roy, is revered as the "Rani Maa" or Queen Mother by the constituency, carrying a legacy rich in tradition and aristocracy.

The state, which is also home to the country’s startup capital, Bengaluru, will be a crucial one in this election too since no party or alliance exerts an unassailable influence so far. As voters assess the 241 candidates, which include 133 Independents, in the following constituencies - Udupi-Chikmagalur, Hassan, Dakshina Kannada, Chitradurga, Tumkur, Mandya, Mysore, Chamarajnagar, Bangalore Rural, Bangalore North, Bangalore Central, Bangalore South, Chikkaballapur and Kolar - a big question will be on the minds of the state’s farmers: which party’s handouts will be more generous? The situation for farmers has been bleak for a while. Following months of damage to farmland due to floods and landslides, by the end of 2018, <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Politics/we4v5MvF7mj6ZWG0kiC8gJ/Farm-crisis-deepens-in-Karnataka-156-talukas-declared-droug.html">156 out of 176 administrative divisions</a> on the state were declared drought-hit, amplifying farmer distress. As campaigning for state elections in May 2018 reached fever pitch, both the BJP and Congress pledged loan waivers and income support. Both their manifestos promised <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/elections/karnataka-election-2018/story/how-both-bjp-and-congress-aggressively-woo-farmers-in-karnataka-1226789-2018-05-04">thousands of crores of loan waivers </a>as well as funding for agriculture projects. State elections in May last year ultimately resulted in a hung Assembly, with the Congress and <keyword id="123462" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Janata-Dal">Janata Dal</keyword> joining forces to form a coalition government. One of the coalition’s first orders of business was to waive farmer loans to the <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bengaluru/rs-44000-crore-loan-waiver-has-helped-only-800-farmers-so-far-karnataka/articleshow/67069947.cms">tune of ₹440 billion</a>. The initial goodwill around the scheme likely powered an important victory for the Congress <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/karnataka-bypoll-results-congress-jds-coalition-leads-in-two-ls-seats-bjp-in-one/articleshow/66521102.cms?from=mdr">in five bypolls</a> in November 2018. However, the scheme was slower to implement than expected. As of mid-December 2018, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bengaluru/rs-44000-crore-loan-waiver-has-helped-only-800-farmers-so-far-karnataka/articleshow/67069947.cms">only 800 farmers </a>had benefited from the scheme, a far cry from the millions of farmers that were expected to avail of it. The problem? The state’s banks had trouble reconciling the final list of eligible beneficiaries. The state government was quick to do damage control amid growing discord with farmers. In February 2019, it announced that around <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/karnataka-news/karnataka-released-rs-5-450-crore-for-farm-loan-waiver-chief-minister-kumaraswamy-1990568">₹54.5 billion of funds</a> for the scheme had been released, and that the number of eligible beneficiaries had nearly doubled to 11 million. A strong election campaign for the Lok Sabha was assured. Until the <keyword id="65281" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Election-Commission-of-India">Election Commission of India</keyword> (ECI) stepped in. In March 2019, the ECI ordered <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/karnataka/loan-waiver-scheme-hits-poll-code-roadblock/article26594392.ece">the temporary suspension of the loan waiver scheme</a> until general elections were over, saying that payments under the scheme could be used to influence voters. The move stalled ₹1.5 billion of loan repayments. While the suspension further slows down the scheme and will delay <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/karnataka/loan-waiver-scheme-hits-poll-code-roadblock/article26594392.ece">its final implementation well past July 2019</a>, the state’s farmers are looking to the <keyword id="6354642" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Modi">Modi</keyword> administration for a lifeline. The cash transfer scheme for announced in the government’s interim budget is expected to benefit eight million smallholding and marginal farmers in the state, with <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/economy-politics/pm-kisan-scheme-about-5-cr-farmers-to-get-2nd-installment-from-next-month/story/330337.html">two of three installments </a>coming right before polling started. Apparently, the ECI didn’t feel that would exert undue influence on voters. As things stand, the state’s farmers are caught between two competing governments and two competing schemes. A vote will likely mean a vote for a scheme that has helped them to a greater extent. BJP has nominated the retired IPS officer Prakash Mishra to contest from Cuttack Lok Sabha constituency. At present this seat is held by BJD candidate Bhartruhari Mahtab. Mishra had joined the BJP only recently and he will lock horns with the BJD candidate Achyuta Samant, a Rajya Sabha Member and an edu-entrepreneur. Also, BJP has announced that the former MP Kharabela Swain will contest from the Khandamal Lok Sabha constituency. Swain had been elected as BJP candidate from Balasore three times. In the meanwhile, the state government’s opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also claimed that it has the required number in its favour to possibly form a government. One rebel MLA held at airport The ballooning issue has many interesting developments, today. One of the rebel Congress MLAs, Roshan Baig was detained at the Bengaluru airport while he was trying to take a chartered flight, as per IANS. “Baig was detained for questioning at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) when he was about to take off in a private aircraft to an unconfirmed destination from <keyword id="6355033" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="bangalore">Bangalore</keyword>,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) B.R. Ravikantha Gowda was <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/karnataka-congress-mla-roshan-baig-detained-in-bengaluru-1569785-2019-07-16">reported saying</a>. Baig had kickstarted the crisis by tendering his resignation on June 10. After that, 15 MLAs across both the coalition parties followed suit, shaking up the state government. Karnataka politics had turned into a battle ground after MLAs resigned from the ruling government. However, the speaker did not accept the resignations terming saying that it violates constitutional rights. The MLAs had accused the Speaker Ramesh Kumar of not accepting their resignations, even when they were in accordance with the Indian constitution. “We are now 15 MLAs who want to resign but there is no formal acceptance by Speaker. Idea is not to defect, but resign so that we can go back to public and contest,” said Mukul Rohatagi, earlier told a Supreme Court bench which includes Chief Justice <keyword id="245445" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ranjan-Gogoi">Ranjan Gogoi</keyword>.

Karnataka CM Kumaraswamy puts up a brave front, but rebel MLAs lawyer says government is in a minority

NEW DELHI: BJP appeared to be bracing for fresh turmoil in the run-up to <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> polls after L K Advani expressed disinclination to seek re-election from <keyword id="6356847" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="gandhinagar">Gandhinagar</keyword> in Narendra Modi-ruled Gujarat. 
 Although the central leadership turned down the request and sought to put a lid on the matter by announcing Advani’s candidature from Gandhinagar, the party leadership was keeping its fingers crossed. According to late-night reports, Advani has indicated that he would rather wait for the party central election committee to respond to his request to contest from <keyword id="6355556" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="bhopal">Bhopal</keyword>. 
 Advani’s desire, conveyed to <keyword id="114039" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="BJP-chief">BJP chief</keyword> <keyword id="6355121" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Rajnath-Singh">Rajnath Singh</keyword> on Monday, to switch constituencies came as a surprise to the party because of his consistent public stand that he would fight only from Gandhinagar: the constituency which he has won since 1991. He had stated this as recently as on February 28 when the party announced its first list of candidates. 
 
The decision of the central election committee came after day-long drama that seemed to bring to the fore the bitter resistance of a section in BJP to Modi’s leadership. The saffron senior kept away from the deliberations on the ground that his candidature was under discussion even as reports swirled through the day about his reluctance to contest from Gandhinagar. 
 After the committee’s meeting, senior leaders <keyword id="6355111" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sushma-Swaraj">Sushma Swaraj</keyword> and <keyword id="26680" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Nitin-gadkari">Nitin Gadkari</keyword> met Advani to convey the party’s decision. General secretary Thawarchand Gehlot soon announced the decision to signal that the nomination for Gandhinagar, so far as the leadership is concerned, was a closed chapter.

 Yet, there was wariness about what Advani might do, with party circles speculating whether the <keyword id="6355554" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Madhya-Pradesh">Madhya Pradesh</keyword> unit may recommend him for the Bhopal seat. 
 
Amid growing uncertainty, Modi had a meeting with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat at the Sangh’s Jhandewalan office in the capital. Several assumptions were being put forward in party circles for Advani’s desire to move away from Gandhinagar after having often emphasized his closed links to Gujarat, saying his family had settled there after moving from Karachi and it was home. 
 Many in the party felt the attempted switch was meant to signal his autonomy of Modi and to emphasize that he could win from any constituency of his choice. With Madhya Pradesh already playing host to Sushma Swaraj, who represents Vidisha and whose equations with Modi are seen as tense, the desire to move to Bhopal was also suspected to be an attempt to raise a parallel axis vis-à-vis the ascendant troika of Modi, party chief Rajnath Singh and <keyword id="19496" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="leader">leader</keyword> of opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley. 
 Party circles have for some time sniffed an effort to set up <keyword id="6355553" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="MP">MP</keyword> chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan as a counterpoint to Modi. The tussle in the party over Modi’s projection as PM candidate saw Advani suggesting that Chouhan’s performance as CM surpassed Modi’s as Chouhan had turned around Madhya Pradesh which, unlike Gujarat, was a BIMARU state. 
 
Some in the party also saw the move to shift constituency as reflective of Advani camp’s fear that his campaign may be subverted by workers who may look to proactively scuttle any post-poll trouble for Modi. Although Modi camp would have ensured that Advani won comfortably to ward off the charge of sabotage, workers remain apprehensive of the intent of Modi’s opponents in the party. 
 Fearing that Advani’s shfit to Bhopal could be projected as another instance of senior leaders being humiliated under the Modi-Rajanth dispensation, the official faction had swung into action to dissuade Advani soon after he conveyed his keenness on Bhopal. The <keyword id="1589638" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Gujarat-party">Gujarat party</keyword> recommended just Advani’s name for Gandhinagar on Monday. On Tuesday, former party MP from Gujarat Vijay Rupani publicized the state unit’s insistence that the party veteran stick with Gandhinagar. 
 
Sources close to the leadership saw the sudden change in Advani’s preference as underscoring the tenacity of the resistance that Modi faces from “determined hold-outs”. In recent weeks, Swaraj openly opposed the decision to re-admit Karnataka leader B Sriramulu. She not only tweeted her reservations but followed that up with another tweet after Sriramulu joined the party. 
 
But just as it has firmly overruled the protests of senior leaders like M M Joshi who had to make way for Modi in Varanasi, the ascendant BJP leadership does not seem ready to cater to Advani’s bid to shift to Bhopal. 
 
The meeting of the election committee saw several attendees emphasizing the point that the Gujarat unit had unanimously endorsed him as the candidate for Gandhinagar. 
 
Whether Advani, having “recused” himself from the meeting on the ground that it would be improper for him to participate in the deliberations when his name was under consideration, will insist on having his way despite the decision remains a tricky question. 
 
However, the way the battle of wits ends will be shaped by what stance Chouhan takes, particularly whether Sangh uses its leverage with him to nip any trouble from the Madhya Pradesh unit.

Turmoil In BJP Over Advani’s Bid To Shift To Bhopal

New Delhi, Poll strategist <keyword id="4300245" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sunil-kanugolu" source="Orion">Sunil Kanugolu</keyword> has yet again proven to be the man with the Midas touch, plotting the Congress' amazing turnaround in Telangana months after being the architect of the grand old party's return to power in Karnataka. Starting with Prashant Kishor's I-PAC, Kanugolu was largely credited for shaping the Congress' win in Karnataka and was later accorded Cabinet rank in the Siddaramaiah government. This time, Kanugolu along with PCC chief A Revanth Reddy formed a formidable pair to chalk out the Congress' strategy to pull down the K Chandrashekhar Rao-led BRS government that was eying a third term in the southern state. The Congress was headed for victory in Telangana while it was staring at crushing defeats in the Hindi heartland states of <keyword id="6355554" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="madhya-pradesh" source="Orion">Madhya Pradesh</keyword>, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. Kanugolu had also made forays in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh following a directive from the party's central leadership but regional satraps Ashok Gehlot and Kamal Nath reportedly were not on the same page as the poll strategist. Ahead of the Rajasthan elections, Kanugolu had made an assessment about the winnability of probable candidates but Gehlot reportedly did not agree to his suggestions and brought in Naresh Arora's Designboxed to construct the Congress government's narrative in the run-up to the assembly polls. Sources say that the success of Kanugolu in Karnataka and Telangana was the result of the free hand given to him and allowing his team to work freely. Kanugolu, who hails from Karnataka and is in his early 40s, has been considered largely as the brain behind the Congress' narrative in Karnataka with the 'PayCM' campaign against the BJP. In the run-up to the polls in Telangana, he highlighted the alleged corruption of the K Chandrashekhar Rao dispensation as part of Congress' campaign that seemed to have struck a chord with the people. The campaigns run by the Congress in Karnataka and Telangana have been very similar as both highlighted the alleged graft of the ruling dispensation and projected welfare guarantees that seemed to have struck an instant connection with the public. Interestingly, Kanugolu has also been involved in several BJP poll campaigns in the past. In 2018, he worked with the BJP in Karnataka and the party managed to become the single largest party with 104 seats. He had also worked on Narendra Modi's campaign in 2014, as well as the party's political campaigns in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. Kanugolu, a former consultant with McKinsey, was also associated with DMK chief MK Stalin and oversaw the party's '<keyword id="3576832" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="namakku-naame" source="Orion">Namakku Naame</keyword>' (we are for ourselves) campaign during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In 2021, he also worked with AIADMK against the DMK and led the party to win 75 seats in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections. Kanugolu had joined the Congress last year and worked closely with the Karnataka campaign. He is also credited with strategising <keyword id="5268" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rahul-gandhi" source="Orion">Rahul Gandhi</keyword>'s cross-country 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' from Kanyakumari to Kashmir last year. Having delivered Karnataka and Telangana to the Congress, Kanugolu is likely to be given more responsibilities by the party in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls.

Sunil Kanugolu: The poll strategist behind Congress' win in Telangana

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], December 3 (ANI): The Congress 'hand' has stopped Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) 'car' in Telangana as the grand old party has comfortably reached the majority mark as per the latest trends of the Election Commission of India. The Congress is leading on 61 seats while the BRS on 36 and the BJP leading on 10, as per ECI. Telangana Congress President, Anumula <keyword id="933541" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="revanth-reddy" source="Orion">Revanth Reddy</keyword> is leading from the Kamareddy seat leaving CM KCR trailing behind. Revanth Reddy is MP in the Lok Sabha from INC representing Malkajgiri Constituency. Earlier, He was a two-time MLA in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly from TDP in 2009 and 2014 and in the Telangana Assembly between 2014 and 2018 representing Kodangal Constituency. He left TDP and joined Congress in 2017. In June 2021, he was appointed as president of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee replacing N. Uttam Kumar Reddy. Both Congress candidate Konda Surekha and Naini Rajender Reddy are leading from Warangal East and West seats. Telangana CM KCR is leading from the Gajwel seat. Since the formation of the State in the year 2014, BRS has been holding power with KCR as its chief minister. Kalvakuntla Taraka Rama Rao (KTR) is leading from Sircilla, which is considered one of the most important seats. KTR fought from the same seat in the 2018 elections and won. Payal Shanker from BJP is leading on the Adilabad seat while Dhanpal Suryanarayana leading from Nizamabad (Urban). Jaffar Hussain from AIMIM is leading on the Yakutpura seat. Celebrations were seen outside the Congress office in Hyderabad over the party crossing the halfway mark comfortably. The party cadre chanted "Bye bye KCR". The Telangana election results will be important for the Congress as it heads into the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. A win in Karnataka and Telangana would further concrete its presence in the South. The Congress party, which is now in reckoning, was completely written off just six months ago. The stage is set for the second phase of assembly poll in <keyword id="6357783" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="West-bengal">West Bengal</keyword> on Thursday when more than 75 lakh voters will decide the fate of 191 candidates in 30 seats as eyes are set on the high profile Nandigram constituency where Chief Minister <keyword id="43868" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mamata-Banerjee">Mamata Banerjee</keyword> is pitted against her protag turned adversary Suvendu Adhikari. All 10,620 booths where polling will be held this phase have been declared as sensitive by the <keyword id="40807" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Election-Commission">Election Commission</keyword>, which has deployed around 651 companies of central forces to provide security, officials said. Besides, the state police will also be deployed at strategic locations during the polling which will begin at 7 am, they said. A total 199 companies of Central Armed Police Force will be deployed in Purba Medinipur, 210 companies in Paschim Medinipur, 170 in South 24 Parganas and 72 in Bankura, the sources said. Apart from identity politics and Bengali sub- nationalism, the demand for jobs, inclusion of Hindu backward communities in the OBC category and setting up of agro-based industry have emerged as main poll planks in the second phase of polls. l Of the 30 seats which will see voting on Thursday, 23 were won by TMC in the 2016 assembly elections, five by Left Front and Congress and BJP one each. The political equation in the state had changed in 2019 when BJP made massive inroads in the tribal-dominated Janga Mahal region and Medinipur belt by sweeping all the five Lok Sabha seats. The TMC, however, has been able to maintain its dominance in South 24 Parganas district, where there is sizeable minority population. A prominent seat going to the poll in the second phase is Sabang, where TMC has fielded its Rajya Sabha MP Manas Bhunia. He is up against TMC turncoat and BJP leader Amulya Maity. Bhunia, a former state Congress president, had held the seat from 1982 to 016 as Congress nominee before switching over to the TMC in September 2016. TMC has fielded actor <keyword id="1076648" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sayantika-Banerjee">Sayantika Banerjee</keyword>, a popular face in the Bengali silver screen, from Bankura seat against BJP's Niladri Sekhar Dana. The Sanjukta Morcha has fielded Congress candidate Radharani Banerjee. In Debra seat, two former IPS officers will cross swords. One is BJP candidate Bharati Ghosh who is contesting against TMC's <keyword id="184573" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Humayun-Kabir">Humayun Kabir</keyword>. Both had resigned from their senior police posts to join active politics. Banerjee, who is in a wheelchair since her accident early this moth, crisscrossed the majority of the constituencies going to the polls in the second phase. TMC MP <keyword id="255730" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Abhishek-Banerjee">Abhishek Banerjee</keyword> toured the rest asserting that TMC will not let Bengal to be ruled from Delhi or Gujarat in an apparent reference to the battery of central BJP leaders and ministers camping in the state.
