The medical examination report of JNUSU president <keyword id="3048656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kanhaiya-Kumar">Kanhaiya Kumar</keyword>, who was attacked while present in the Patiala House court complex, shows that he received external injuries in the attack. This contradicts the claims made by police that Kanhaiya was unharmed in the whole chaos. 
 
The medical report shows that Kanhaiya Kumar has multiple abrasions on his left foot and nose, apart from tenderness in his left toe. 
 
The student leader was attacked on Wednesday by a group of men dressed in lawyers' robes. Some journalists present there were also harmed. 
 
After the incident, however, Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi had claimed that Kumar was unharmed in the attacks as he was "well-protected".

Kanhaiya Kumar's medical reports show he was beaten up, falsifying Delhi Police’s claims

JNUSU president <keyword id="3048656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kanhaiya-Kumar">Kanhaiya Kumar</keyword> on Thursday moved the Supreme Court seeking to be released on bail. 
 
The apex court bench comprising Justice J. Chelameswar and Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre said they will hear the plea at 10.30 a.m. on Friday. 
 
Lawyer Vrinda Grover, who filed the plea on behalf of Kanhaiya Kumar, said in the petition that since the atmosphere in the Patiala House court complex was not conducive for moving the plea application, Kanhaiya Kumar was invoking his right under Article 32 to move the Supreme court directly for bail. 
 
Under Article 32, a citizen can move the Supreme Court for enforcing his fundamental rights.

JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar moves petition seeking bail

<ul><li>BJP's Giriraj Singh has over 6.88 lakh votes compared to rival Kanhaiya Kumar's 2.67 lakh votes.</li><li>Rashtriya Janata Dal's Tanveer Hasan has a little over 1.96 lakh votes after the first hour of counting.</li><li>BJP has over 51% of the votes counted so far.</li></ul>A small district of Begusarai has a difficult choice to make between two firebrand politicians-- debutante Kanhaiya Kumar from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), popularly known as CPI(M) and the veteran Giriraj Singh from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). And they seem to have picked Singh's saffron over Kumar's red. As of 9:50 am, Giriraj Singh was ahead with 51% of the votes counted while Kanhaiya Kumar had half the number of votes as his rival from BJP. In the third spot is Tanveer Hasan of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), which is in alliance with the Congress in the state of Bihar. The voter turnout this time was at 61.27% that is 2% more than five years ago when the BJP candidate Bhola Singh bagged the seat with a margin of 58,000 votes. Kanhaiya Kumar shot to national fame when the cops in Delhi arrested him and his friends from the Jawaharlal Nehru University for alleged anti-national activities in 2016. Since then, he has used the media spotlight on him to challenge BJP’s politics and policies, and target Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his rhetoric. Aside from a long list of stars from the showbiz -- poet Javed Akhtar, actors Shabana Aazmi, Prakash Raj and Swara Bhaskara as well as comedian Kunal Kamra campaigned for him -- Kanhaiya Kumar has the support of a big chunk of people, nearly 450,000, in the district who belong to the same caste as him, Bhumihar. He has also been wooing votes of the Muslims, who make for 17% of the district’s population. However, it has to be said that in the particular case of Begusarai, both RJD and CPI(M) resonate among Muslim voters, people from the Yadav community, as well as those from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes of the region. Further, Kumar and Hasan are pitted against a veteran politician and a minister in the central government, Giriraj Singh, who is riding on Modi’s charm much like many other BJP candidates across the country. Any division of votes between Kumar and Hasan may provide an advantage to the BJP. On the other hand, a victory for Kumar may earn him the credibility of a serious politician and a long career. BJP's Giriraj Singh has over twice the number of votes as debutante Kanhaiya Kumar, so far

The protests and counter protests at the Jawaharlal Nehru University are refusing to die out. What started as an event to mark the death anniversary of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, by alleged students of the University, at the campus has snowballed into a gigantic political controversy, resulting in detentions under sedition charges, assault on journalists amongst other things etc. 
 
Here is the timeline of what happened at the JNU campus: 
 
- Alleged students of the JNU had organised an event to protest against judicial hanging of Afzal Guru in 2013 and also to express solidarity with Kashmiri migrants. 
 
- Posters were put up at the Sabarmati dhaba of JNU campus about the same. Also, a programme-‘A country without a post office — against the judicial killing of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhatt’-was supposed to take off. 
 
- This didn’t go down well with ABVP members, who protested against the event, demanding expulsion of the organisers. 
 
- A disciplinary enquiry was taken up by the university administration. The administration claimed the organisers went ahead with the event without permission. 
 
- A protest march was also carried out and ABVP members accused JNU students of shouting anti-India slogans. A video also appeared in which students were heard shouting slogans like ‘Kashmir ki azadi se, bharat ki barbadi tak, jangh rahegi jari’. 
 
- Now, ABVP members and JNU students are at loggerheads. In the face-off, JNU students say they did not shout any anti-national slogans. 
 
- A sedition case against unknown students was registered at Vasant Kunj (North) police station and the university also barred eight students from academic activity pending an enquiry. 
 
- JNU Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested on sedition charges and ordered to three-day police custody. 
 
- Students of JNU gave a shutdown call and #JNUShutdown started trending everywhere, demanding Kumar’s release. JNU teachers also joined the students in boycotting classes. 
 
- On February 14, the Patiala House saw violence as a mob, wearing lawyer’s robe, slapped and kicked supporters of Kanhaiya Kumar. Journalists and students bore the brunt of the violence. 
 - Over 400 journalists had taken out a procession after mediapersons were attacked by lawyers at the <keyword id="286287" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Patiala-court">Patiala Court</keyword>. The Supreme Court had slammed unruly behaviour of the lawyers and ordered that both the clients and media persons should be given security in the premises of the courts. 
 
 
 
- On February 17 also, violence was witnessed outside Patiala House Court when two groups of lawyers clashed with each other. Pro-India slogans were raised by lawyers who called themselves 'deshbhakts' and referred to those stopping them as 'deshdrohi'. 
 
- The group of lawyers that attacked journalists said that they cannot be termed 'goons'. Lawyers were heard chanting ‘Vande Mataram’. The Supreme Court was also informed that Kanhaiya Kumar was attacked in the court premises. 
 
- Some reports of stone-pelting at the Patiala House court also surfaced. 
 
- SC restricted the number reporters to five and two supporters of arrested students for the hearing. 
 
- Kanhaiya Kumar has been sent to judicial custody till March 02. Before his hearing, journalists were yet again attacked in the scuffle between two lawyer groups. 
 
- Doctor has been called to provide medical aid to Kanhaiya. 
 
- Kumar has maintained that he did not shout any anti-national slogans and few outsiders were involved in raising anti-India slogans.

Difference of opinions has led to three members of the <keyword id="6356383" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="JNU">JNU</keyword> unit of <keyword id="106559" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Akhil-Bharatiya-Vidyarthi-Parishad">Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad</keyword> (<keyword id="6361618" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="ABVP">ABVP</keyword>) resigning from the student council. 
 
These differences have come in light after the recent JNU incident that has attracted attention from scholars worldwide. The names of these members are Pradeep, who was the joint secretary of ABVP-JNU, Rahul Yadav, the president and Ankit Hans, the secretary of ABVP's unit in the School of Social Sciences. 
 
All three of them have expressed their grief over the way the central government has handled the Rohith Vemula incident. 
 The trio has objected to the government's handling of the recent incident in which JNU student union president <keyword id="3048656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kanhaiya-Kumar">Kanhaiya Kumar</keyword> was arrested following some anti-India slogans that were raised in a meeting that he was headed. 
 
"Whosoever responsible for the act must be punished as per the law but the way NDA government [is] tackling the whole issue, the oppression on professors, repeated lawyer attacks on media and Kanhaiya Kumar on court premises is unjustifiable and we think there is a difference between interrogation and crushing ideology and branding entire Left as "anti-national," said the statement. 
 
The three students maintained "veiled persons" had "shouted slogans Bharat tere tukadde honge" at the "event organized by former DSU persons" but did not mention any name. They not only condemned the sloganeering, but also the "media trial which has culminated in anti-JNU sentiments throughout the country." 
 
"We can't be the mouthpiece of such a government which has unleashed oppression on the student community." They have also slammed BJP MLA O P Sharma's action, equating it with "right-wing fascist forces". "Every day we see people assembling at the front gate with Indian flag to beat JNU students, well this is hooliganism not nationalism, you can't do anything in the name of nation, there is a difference between nationalism and hooliganism," the statement said.

These #JNUsticeLeague superheroes will help India from free speech, question ideologies

New Delhi, Dec 30 () Taking the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) head-on over sedition issue, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Monday asked why action based on evidence should not be taken against anyone found indulging in anti-India activities under the garb of protests.
 "If some people are genuinely found indulging in sedition and if there are legal evidence available to prove, why should sanction not be imposed," he said in a veiled reference to the AAP-led Delhi government.
 The Delhi government had refused to sanction prosecution of students' leader Kanhaiya Kumar and research scholars Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya in connection with the February 2016 JNU sedition case.
 Prasad was speaking at an event here to launch a data repository to help track missing or stolen mobile phones in the national capital.
 He added, "Such politics...does not go a long way."
 Prasad also went on to criticise the AAP for not allowing the health insurance scheme Ayushman Bharat to be implemented in Delhi.
 "Can we de-link development from politics. Democracy means debate and discussions... (But) why have the benefits of Ayushman Bharat not been given to poor people in Delhi. What was the problem in that," he said.

Prasad takes on Delhi govt on health scheme, sedition issue

Student unions of various parties have said that all sections of society should wait for completion of the <keyword id="6356383" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="JNU">JNU</keyword> inquiry before doing the "character assassination" of the university. This, however, doesn’t mean that they support the anti-national slogans that were raised in the university campus. 
 These unions have asked for the release of JNUSU President <keyword id="3048656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kanhaiya-Kumar">Kanhaiya Kumar</keyword> and withdrawal of "false charges" against all the university students. 
 These demands have come in a joint press conference released by leaders from All India Students' Association (<keyword id="202881" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aisa">AISA</keyword>) of CPI(ML), All India Students Federation (<keyword id="340585" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="AISF">AISF</keyword>) of CPI, National Students' Union of India (<keyword id="6372948" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="NSUI">NSUI</keyword>) of Congress, Students Federation of India (<keyword id="6373398" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="SFI">SFI</keyword>) of CPI(M) and Student Forum For Swaraj (<keyword id="951603" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="SFS">SFS</keyword>). 
 They also denounced the assault on Left activists, JNU teachers, students and media that was done on February 15 in Patiala court. These attacks were cited as <keyword id="42498" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="RSS">RSS</keyword> and BJP’s attempts to "spread a reign of terror against differing voices". 
 
"We condemn the anti-national slogans that were raised during the event but who did that is a matter of investigation. Let the inquiry takes it course. Do not character assassinate the entire university by branding it as anti-national," SFI general secretary Vikram Singh said. 
 
"If the entire University is anti-national, then its alumini including Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar, CBI Director Anil Sinha and BJP leader Nirmala Sitharaman are also anti-national," NSUI leader Kumar Raja said. 
 
"Slogans cannot be used as an excuse to crackdown on JNU. We demand the immediate and unconditional release of JNUSU President Kanhaiya and the immediate withdrawal of false charges on all JNU students," they said in a joint statement. 
 
The "ongoing assault on JNU is part of a long process by the Modi government to destroy our best educational institutions," the released added. "We are seeing a pattern wherein the Modi government actively intervenes to shove the RSS-BJP agenda down the throats" of the insitutions," they claimed.

Irani was mired in a controversy over her claims of possessing a Yale degree. Secondly, she scrapped the four-year format at the Delhi University and went back with the three-year format, which was against the wishes of the VC and UGC. 
 
The HRD Ministry was also at loggerheads with the Niti Ayog over accreditation and other issues. Experts say Irani took Niti Ayog as interference. 
 
Her handling of suicide case of Dalit scholar at Hyderabad Central University, Rohith Vemula, was also criticised by many. 
 
The recent Jawaharlal Nehru University row involving Kanhaiya Kumar also didn’t add to her sheen. Irani also played with fire when replaced German with Sanskrit as the third language in Kendriya Vidyalayas in 2014. 
 
Irani was also at the centre of the controversy when she was accused of intervening in the affairs of IIT-Delhi prompting the resignation of Director RK Shevgaonkar, two years before his term.

BJP lawmaker Gyandev Ahuja, during a protest in Alwar over the JNU row, said, “In JNU daily you find 3,000 beer cans and bottles, 2,000 Indian liquor bottles, 10,000 cigarette butts, 4,000 beedis, 50,000 bone pieces, 2,000 wrappers of chips, 3,000 used condoms and 500 abortion injections." 
 
His bizarre comments backfired and invited the wrath from BJP chief Amit Shah. Amid all this, his comments also became a butt of joke as Twitterati did not spare Ahuja and BJP at all.

Swachh Bharat on a new high as #BJPCountsCondoms!

Linking the Rohith Vemula and <keyword id="3048656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kanhaiya-Kumar">Kanhaiya Kumar</keyword> issues with rights of the marginalised, Congress leader <keyword id="5268" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rahul-Gandhi">Rahul Gandhi</keyword> today accused the <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> government of "crushing" the weak and the poor who demand their rights. 
 
He also said Union ministers and BJP leaders were free to carry out personalised attacks against him but they should not "crush the poor and the weak for whom I speak." 
"Tribals from Bastar met me today. They said they are facing atrocities in Chhattisgarh's Bastar and that they are being threatened and crushed. 
 
"Country will not benefit by beating and threatening people. You pressurised Rohith Vemula in Hyderabad, here you are pressurising Kanhaiya and our students," the Congress Vice President told reporters here. 
 
He alleged that wherever the poor is seeking rights, "be it farmer, dalit, tribal or small trader --small traders came to me -- wherever a weak person is raising voice, NDA government, Modi government is trying to crush it." 
 
These people are the strength of India and no one will benefit by crushing them, he said. 
 
 
"If you have to take action, do it. Those who break law, take action. But by crushing, threatening and beating the poor won't help the country," Rahul said. 
 In an apparent reference to Modi's remarks in the <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> that "some people age but do not mature", Rahul said the PM and his Cabinet colleagues are free to attack him. "Modi attacked me personally. His party colleagues are attacking me personally on a daily basis," he said. <keyword id="6355261" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Finance-minister">Finance Minister</keyword> <keyword id="42575" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arun-Jaitley">Arun Jaitley</keyword> recently took a dig at the Congress Vice-President over his Lok Sabha speech and said "the more I hear Rahul Gandhi, the more I start wondering how much does he know -- when will he know". 
 
"As one evolves from a young to a middle-aged one, we certainly expect a certain level of maturity," Jaitley had said in a Facebook post reacting to Gandhi's remarks that Prime Minister Modi does not consult his senior ministers on policy issues. 
 
"Do as much personal attacks as you want. But don't crush the poor, the weak for whom I speak. Hit me as much you want. Attack me as much you want. Speak for as long as you want to, but don't hit the poor people of the country," Rahul stressed.

The din in Indian <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Media">media</keyword> has escalated tonight. Social media is abuzz; most television channels are debating a law enacted by the British – under Thomas Macaulay in 1870s—that allows for imprisonment for “words, either spoken or written, or by signs, or by visible representation, or otherwise, brings or attempts to bring into hatred or contempt, or excites or attempts to excite disaffection towards the <keyword id="26362" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Government">government</keyword>". In recent years that law has been used by the police to apprehend people for <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kochi/Facebook-like-case-No-evidence-of-sedition-govt-tells-HC/articleshow/18254753.cms">liking “a Facebook post</a>, <a href="http://archive.indianexpress.com/news/sedition-charge-against-digvijay-over-remark-against-ramdev/799912/">criticising a yoga guru</a>, <a href="http://www.ndtv.com/meerut-news/sedition-charges-for-students-who-cheered-pakistan-unacceptably-harsh-omar-abdullah-553012">cheering a rival cricket team</a>, <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-19540565">drawing cartoons</a>, <a href="http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/kashmir-university-lecturer-released/1/125303.html">asking a provocative question</a> in a university exam, or <a href="http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-others/kerala-court-denies-bail-to-youth-who-didnt-stand-up-during-national-anthem/">not standing up in a cinema when the national anthem is being played</a>,” as <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-37182206">reported</a> by the BBC in 2016. The latest use of the colonial law was the Delhi police that booked <keyword id="3048656" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kanhaiya-Kumar">Kanhaiya Kumar</keyword>, a former president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (<keyword id="6356383" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="JNU">JNU</keyword>) students’ union, and some of his associates from the same institution, for raising “anti India” slogans during a gathering. The incident in question occurred three years ago when a bunch of students from JNU were staging a protest against the death penalty handed to <keyword id="43716" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Afzal-Guru">Afzal Guru</keyword>, a militant held to be a terrorist by the country’s top court after it held him guilty for a gun attack outside the Indian Parliament in 2001. The students in the spotlight today were arrested in 2015, soon after the incident, but the court let them out on bail while the investigation carried on. News reports alleged that charges against Kumar and others were based on a doctored video, a charge that the Delhi police has ruled out with its move today. The incident shot Kumar—who is aligned with a left-wing outfit-- to fame and gave him political stage to voice his views to a larger audience. He is a staunch critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his government and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The country’s polarized media has positioned itself with or against Kumar based on their ideological positions and the topic is hogging prime-time debates. The politics aside, the provision to arrest a person for <keyword id="6364658" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sedition">sedition</keyword> is a law that has criticized at the highest levels in <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> for over five decades now. When the British used the law as a tool to suppress rebellion in India, Mahatma Gandhi, who was charged with sedition, famously said the law was "designed to suppress the liberty of the citizen". In 1951, the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru described the law as "highly objectionable and obnoxious". In 1962, the Supreme Court imposed limits on the use of the law, making incitement to violence a necessary condition. The law itself put to a review as late as last year but the enforcement agencies have been keen time and again to use an archaic law to put down any kind of dissent. It’s 2019 and no political party in the country has made any real difference by doing away with a law that has repeatedly been used to stifle political opposition, despicably at times.

What is sedition in India and why is it a hot topic of debate?

The ongoing activities at JNU campus have gathered eyeballs for all the wrong reasons. For the past 14 years, I have been associated with the university, both as a student and as a faculty member, and apart from the educational achievement what I imbibed from that surrounding is the democratic ethos and the right to dissent without any fear. 
 
What went wrong? 
Dissatisfaction from the administration or the system is acceptable and one can be vocal about that in a peaceful manner but being an anti-national and attacking the soul of the country is highly unacceptable. Traditionally, JNU has been a Left inclined university with ideas and propagandas floating over the cup of tea at Ganga Dhaba. 
 
This is not the first time that the anti-national slogans (of mild intensity, of course) are in the air but this time it has gone too far. 
 
Dissatisfaction with the government or any political party can be understood but dissatisfaction with the country cannot be taken for granted. On one side, you are availing all the facilities like subsidized Indian education among others provided to you and on other side you are abusing it should not be tolerated. 
 
First of all this should not have happened in the campus and the administration should have taken care of that. This time all the sensitivity of the freedom of expression has been killed by the protesters. What still remained unanswered is whether they all were university students (especially few with the veils and face masks) or was there some crucial involvement of separatist groups from other states? Delhi Police has already started searching for the clue and raids are being done in few states. Hyderabad University, JNU and now Jadhavpur University, it seems like it’s a preplanned conspiracy of planting the propaganda of anti-nationalism among the students. 
 
In any case, first and foremost objective of any university should be providing quality higher education and everything else is secondary. At JNU, classes are not being conducted with full potential and this is hampering the growth of those students whose future lies in the quality education and not in the association with any political ideology.
