The first trailer of UTV Motion Picture’s upcoming movie Katti Batti has been released, and it’s a three-minute-long wild ride of madness and emotions. The pairing of <keyword id="2201" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kangana-Ranaut">Kangana Ranaut</keyword> and <keyword id="14676" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Imran-Khan">Imran Khan</keyword> looks unusual, but that is the demand of the story, which has been helmed by Kal Ho Naa Ho fame <keyword id="6412743" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nikhil-Advani">Nikhil Advani</keyword>. 
 
Featuring a commitment-phobic spoilt brat Payal and a lover nerd Maddy, this story, which subtly hints at how the essence of love has changed over the years, focuses on the new-age romance and break-ups. In the trailer, Imran Khan, who dons the role of a geek Madhav Kabra, was seen falling for a bombshell Payal, played by Kangana Ranaut. Madhav, luckily, manages to woo her and they both even start living together. But after a 5-year-long relationship, this couple eventually had a break up because of petty issues like bathroom hygiene. 
 
While Kangana is at her wild best in the movie, handing over packets of birth protection to the landlord just to show that they want to rent a flat to raise kids; Imran plays the usual, soft-hearted guy who is hopelessly in love with a girl who has an exact opposite personality. 
 
The trailer showcases a possible suicide attempt, some tear shedding, and even the alcoholic drinking act while sitting in a bathtub, and all these were done by Imran. Kangana, who manages to look careless, comes across as someone who doesn’t take 5 minutes to break off a 5-year-long live-in relationship.

The trailer failed to create a stir. But then, it’s a relatively small-budget movie and it doesn’t look like a big deal to recover the money, considering Kareena is in the lead role. The Indian shows – Bollywood Wives and Moving in with Malaika are so similar to the American versions that one of the stars mouthed similar dialogues too. Starring the designer herself, along with her mother, actor Neena Gupta, the show has emerged as a ‘comfort watch’ for people, raking in praises, and a fair share of nominations - even if no awards. Netflix also experimented in this genre (dramatized stories of real celebrities) with the film AK vs AK, starring Anurag Kashyap and Anil Kapoor. While it didn’t garner the popularity of OTT hits like Mirzapur or Delhi Crime, it did leave a mark on critics and cinephiles alike. These shows are another dimension of reality shows which have always been popular with Indians – on TV and OTT alike. Mumbai, Jul 12 () Actor Rachel White says she has tested positive for COVID-19 and is quarantining at her home. The actor, who is currently in Kolkata, took to Twitter on Saturday night and asked her fans to pray for her speedy recovery. "I have tested COVID-19 positive. Quarantined at home. Please keep me in your prayers as I set off on my path to recovery," she tweeted. Rachel has worked in films like Dharma Productions' Emraan Hashmi-Kangana Ranaut-starrer "Ungli" and "Har Har Byomkesh" in Bengali. The news came soon after megastar Amitabh Bachchan and his son Abhishek Bachchan tested positive for COVID-19 and were admitted to Nanavati Hospital, Saturday. Brand Journey Shilpa was 16 and a part of the modelling world when an aerated drinks brand approached her. Today, she regrets falling for money and choosing shortcuts. Shilpa is now wary of the kind of brands she chooses to work with. She has walked out of the meeting rooms if she doesn’t resonate with the brand. “Earlier, I really didn't think about whether I suited the brand. It was only about whether I was getting paid enough to leverage my name. But in the last five years, there has been a change in my thought process. When people take you seriously as a brand or rather someone synonymous with health and fitness, you become more responsible. So if something doesn't resonate with my personality or something that I can't use at home for my family or me, I won't endorse it,” admits Shilpa. Before her big release lined up this year, Shilpa turned down a Rs 10 crore offer from an Ayurvedic Slimming Pill brand because she did not want youngsters, who look up to her, to fall for fad diets. “There's so many brands I have turned down, I can't sit down and list those,” she breaks into a chuckle. She says she would have bagged a lot more brands and made more money had she not been so fastidious. Pan Masala brands and Aerated Drinks are completely off her list and she says she wouldn’t consider endorsing them ‘for all the money in the world.’ Explaining her modus operandi of choosing deals, she says, “I'm very particular and there's a lot of due diligence that goes into the brands that I work with. And I really believe that there is no shortcut in life. If you were to tell people that by popping pills you will lose weight, I think people who actually work out the right way will start losing faith in what they're doing. And I just feel that though we stopped focusing on mental health, and we will be talking about prizes and losing weight, fitting into a certain size, I think mental health is equally important. And I can't endorse something that doesn't fall into line with my philosophy.” The secret behind her relevance in the industry It was during her post-pregnancy period that Shilpa was asked a lot of questions about her fitness regime on the internet. She joined social media to help people out and realised that the audiences’ love for her hasn’t changed. She used that to her advantage and started her own application. It is her penchant for fitness and strong social media following, that brands still find her relevant. “After all these years, I feel like I stayed relevant. Today, I'm doing two films after 13 years but people still know me, not only because of television, but also because I stand for propagating good health. I want to bring about an awareness and want to play the role of a catalyst. As actors, we are always looked up to, and we have the power of social media. I used that to start my own YouTube channel,” shares Shilpa. Now, Shilpa Shetty is in-between meetings, looking for a fundraiser for her application to expand her reach further. Experts Speak Ashutosh Harbola, CEO and Co-founder, Buzzoka thinks that Shilpa had a strong influence on the industry since she made her fortune in Big Brother; her brand image changed after that and IPL, he says, added a cherry on the cake. “Shilpa Shetty is an ever-blooming social media star and her constant touchpoint with her audience makes her relevant even when she doesn't have too much in her kitty. From a brand's perspective, it's the right fit. Since the social and digital-first audience is always on social media, their appetite for relevancy is much filled. Also, Shilpa has been testing a couple of other platforms too which is keeping her both busy and buzzed. We all saw her entry on TikTok and it's a perfect example of being in the news for the right reasons,” says he. “Post her marriage, she is amongst the rich kids of Instagram making the world drool on her cuteness and the lavish lifestyle,” adds Harbola. N Chandramouli, CEO, TRA Research, highlights how strong her social media currency is, which is one of the reasons why brands still love her. “It is not easy for an actor who has been out of an active acting career for over 10 years to continue to stay relevant. However, Shilpa Shetty has reinvented herself in many new avatars to do what she is good at. She is a fitness icon, TV reality show judge, fashionista, partner in a spa chain, has over 1.6 million subscribers on her Youtube food channel, 6 million followers on her Instagram, among other things. Guess that's more than enough to keep her relevant with new-age millennials and others,” says Chandramouli. Social Media and Brand Expert, Karthik Srinivasan thinks Shilpa’s relatability factor for millennials and Gen Y has worked in her favor. “Shilpa Shetty, I believe, appeals to and can be recognised by a whole lot of middle-aged and older women unlike an Ananya Panday or Alia Bhatt. That relatability is what perhaps works in her favor. Ditto for actors like Vidya Balan. To some extent, it's also a factor of a 40+ woman actor to continue to want attention, work and assignments. Some may choose to shun the limelight and live a more obscure life surrounded by people close to them, as a way to escape the excess attention of earlier times. Shilpa Shetty has been in the limelight long after her exiting the film industry, including her foray into owning teams and so on. So, modeling and films continue to help her position her brand,” explains Srinivasan. An inspiration for other actresses The Khans of Bollywood and actors like Akshay Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan, still continue to be the Top 10 celebrities. Senior actresses, on the other hand, struggle to find film projects. As they vanish from the limelight after they get married, brands stop approaching them. Shilpa is unhesitant to agree that she found her calling much later in her career arc and feels women are finally stepping up to turn the tables. “I found my calling very late but I guess better late than never. Also, times are changing. You see actresses are far more daring today. It's also a more egalitarian world now. Women are given far more opportunities. I think women today are willing to take risks. And yes, it's a different world. And I think that's the only thing that's constant - change,” says Shilpa. Srinivasan also thinks the situation is changing, thanks to actresses like Shilpa Shetty and Vidya Balan and script writers that are breaking the age stereotypes. “I think as an industry, Bollywood (and the regional film industries, in particular) have moved definitely away from age-limits for women actors. While there's always (and still) a demand for young women actors, there are scripts being written for older ages as well, who do not fit the conventional stereotypes of a leading woman in films,” says Srinivasan. He adds, “From a branding point of view, I was very pleasantly surprised to see Tapsee Pannu featured in a Horlicks ad where she was specifically called out as being 30+. Or a Kangana Ranaut playing a mother of a boy in Panga. This scenario was unheard of a few years ago when only men had the freedom to be called 30+, 40+ and still get away with conventional roles in films. 40+ Shilpa Shetty is a variant of the 30+ Tapsee and Kangana.” Chandramouli, on the other hand, feels the onus also lies on actresses. “Brands take endorsements from 53-year-old male actors endorsing colas, and 77-year-old males endorsing everything. When it comes to women celebrities, there are occasions when you will see someone like Madhuri Dixit, who is above 50 years get endorsements. But many don't get as lucky as her. And this age-related aberration is one of the strangest as many times when choosing actors playing an older role, directors tend to cast younger actors. To correct this is the responsibility of female actors as also it is of brands and advertising agencies. Many times due to the paucity of opportunities, women celebrities above 40 tend to start focusing on other areas of their interests in work and personal life. In a highly competitive world, they must continue to stay relevant in their interest areas, stay connected with audiences, and find new interests which find newer fans. Since all endorsements are a commercial arrangement, the fee of endorsement also matters, for the potential endorsers must be willing to adjust fees in line with market demand. For the brands and agencies, it is important to have greater acceptance, to try the different, reink campaigns with such potential endorsers.” While many actresses have come and vanished with time, Shilpa Shetty Kundra has never left the showbiz, setting an example for other female actors in the industry.

The flick has registered the highest collections ever on a single day – Rs 35.91 crore on Monday, November 4. 
 
And still there’s more. Adarsh’s latest tweet says: It’s a rocking Tuesday! #Krrish3 is on a record-smashing spree. Collects ₹ 26.26 cr. Total: ₹ 134.87 cr. AWESOME.

 Papa Roshan’s dream flick stars ‘beta’ Hrithik, <keyword id="1655" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Priyanka-Chopra">Priyanka Chopra</keyword>, Kangana Ranaut and <keyword id="13902" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vivek-Oberoi">Vivek Oberoi</keyword> (he played the villain Kaal). The superhero sci-fi drama was made at a budget of about Rs 100-150 crore. It was sold at Rs 70 crore to some 9 domestic distributors, with another Rs 18 crore coming in from overseas rights (570 screens). Krrish 3 also struck a <keyword id="6358065" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Satellite">satellite</keyword> deal with Sony for about Rs 37 crore and sold its music for Rs 7 crore to T Series, ET reported. 
 Interestingly, it is Hrithik’s second and Priyanka’s fourth film to cross the 100-crore mark. Again, Krrish 3 is Vivek’s second success after the adult comedy Grand Masti. As one critic said, it’s definitely a bumper Diwali gift for all – actors, director-producer, audience and the ubiquitous movie industry called <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword>.

Krrish 3 Rocks Bollywood, Hits Rs 100 Crore In 4 Days

June is at the fag end and we almost have a mid-year report card of Bollywood. Though the year started on a dismal note, it picked up towards May and June. 
 
This year, January was like a drought month and even movies starring big names did not interest the audience. As Arjun Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha starrer-'Tevar'- failed to take off, even the Horrex (horror + sex) formula did not work out for ‘Alone’ and ‘Khamoshiyan’. 
 
Other movies that released in January and failed to make a mark included Sonam Kapoor-starrer ‘Dolly Ki Doli’, 'Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene', ‘Crazy Cukkad Family’, ‘Hawaizaada’ among others. 
 
The only respite that the Bollywood lovers got was from Akshay Kumar’s ‘Baby’, which also became the first movie of 2015 to enter the Rs 100 crore club. 
 
But the jinx did not end in January as February continued to bring more bad news for the industry. 
 
The big shocker came in the form of ‘Shamitabh’. The movie, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Dhanush, was directed by R Balki, the maker who has given us movies like Pa and Cheeni Kum. 
 
Later in the month, ‘Roy’ released, which recorded a good start but by weekend the movie fizzled out. Most trade pundits pegged the crucial India-Pakistan match at the World Cup as the reason for the drop of sales on Sunday but the movie could not recover much post this phase also because of negative word of mouth. 
 
Thankfully, later in the same month we had movies like ‘Badlapur’ and ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’. Both managed to gather decent collections at the Box Office. In fact, ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ was a complete surprise package and managed to pull crowds even in its third week . 
 
March threw a mixed bag as Anushka Sharma starrer 'NH-10' received critical acclaim. April again was a dry month as Bollywood had nothing to offer that could have clicked with the Bolly buffs. 
 
However, Bollywood saw a turnaround in May. It started on a high note with Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Gabbar is Back’, which went to collect Rs 86.55 crore at the Box Office. This was followed by Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan’s 'Piku', which struck a right chord with the audience and collected Rs 111 crore worldwide. 
 
Later in the month, Kangana Ranaut wowed the audience with her spectacular acting in ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’. As per reports, the movie managed to collect Rs 190.87 crore worldwide. Given that the movie was made with Rs 31 crore budget, it stood out and is the most profitable movie of 2015 till date. 
 
But, the disappointment came from ‘Bombay Velvet’. Everybody had high hopes from Ranbir Kapoor’s flick but it fell flat. 
 
The momentum seems to continue with ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ and ‘ABCD 2’. ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ has managed Rs 37.05 crore in the first weekend and is holding the fort well. Also ABCD 2, sequel of ABCD, managed to get the biggest opening for 2015 and continues to do a good business over the week. 
 
The later half will see a slew of big- starrer movies such as Salman Khan starrer ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, Vikas Bahl of Queen fame’s ‘Shaandaar’, ‘Singh is Bling’ featuring Akshay Kumar, Nikhil Advani’s ‘Katti Batti’, Aishwarya Rai’s comeback movie ‘Jazbaa’ and also ‘Dilwale’ in which fans will see Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol paired together. In addition, there will also be a third installment of ‘Hate Story’, ‘Hera Pheri’ and ‘Kya Kool Hai Hum’ to look forward to. 
 
Commenting on the movie sentiment of 2015, Komal Nahata, Trade Analyst shared, “It has been a good 2015 so far. Sure there were some upsets in the start of the year but May has been extremely kind and the rest of the year looks really promising." 
 
We hope that the forthcoming movies get the cash ringer buzzing for Bollywood and we continue to see some entertaining movies in the latter half of the year.

Mid-year assessment: It was a roller coaster ride for Bollywood

The relationship between India and <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> can be compared to that of neighbours who cordially greet each other on formal occasions but are wary of each other’s achievements and failures. Despite the three conflicts in 1962, 1967 and 1987, and India offering asylum to Tibetans and the Dalai Lama, it cannot be denied that China and India have managed to coexist peacefully for millennia through trade and cultural exchanges. 
 
The Silk Road paved the way for traders, artists, doctors and many more who moved from the Orient to the rest of Asia (including India) and back. Both India and China are literally obsessed with each other’s culinary traditions. The number of Chinese restaurants in India and Indian eateries in China helps prove this point further. But due to China’s foreign policies and the Communist history, Indian movies could not find a sweet spot among the Chinese audience for years, in spite of the fact that Indian viewers grew up with Chinese flicks like The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, <keyword id="54923" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="bruce-lee">Bruce Lee</keyword> movies and more recently, a slew of <keyword id="20885" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jackie-Chan">Jackie Chan</keyword> films. 
 
Current rule in China Culturally, China has always done its best to keep itself isolated from foreign influences. This is also reflected in its outlook towards foreign films in general. Every year, the Chinese government allows only 34 foreign films to be screened publicly in the country. Out of these 34, India is to sell five films to the <keyword id="385802" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="China-Film-Group-Corporation">China Film Group Corporation</keyword> (CFGC) every year. However, the Indian government has not been doing that for the past few years. But whether it is due to the lack of marketable movies or due to bureaucratic incompetence – remains to be seen. 
 
It’s all about money The trade deficit between China and India is about $35 billion in China’s favour but since India has a more trade-friendly government in the Centre now, there is a sense of hope right there. One of the ways through which this gap can be narrowed is the marketing of <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> in China. In 2009, the Bollywood film 3 Idiots earned Rs 11 crore in the first couple of weeks of its release in China. And this year, Aamir Khan-starrer Dhoom 3, which had earned more than Rs 500 crore worldwide, is set to be screened across 200 theatres in China on July 26. 
 
In October 2014, the CFGC president will visit India and a wide range of Hindi movies will be shown to him. The Indian ministry is expecting the CFGC to purchase at least 2/3 films for screening those in China. 
 
But is China keen about it? 
Now, the real question is, is there a crowd for mainstream Bollywood films in the Chinese movie market? According to a news report in January 2014, a 23-year-old Chinese citizen, Jiachen Fang, told a visiting IANS journalist “youngsters in China love to watch Indian love stories.” 
 
While Bollywood is not lacking in love stories, the worrying factor for the Indian film industry is the lack of quality content. The CFGC is a government body and this means it will have to toe the line of screening Bollywood films that are culturally significant. While Dhoom 3 was a hit in India, it did not do well with critics. A huge number of <keyword id="6355923" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aamir-Khan">Aamir Khan</keyword>’s fans even panned the film. 
 
Other films that might be up for sale in the Chinese market are Kangana Ranaut-starrer Queen and the biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Both the films were critically acclaimed, compared to Dhoom 3, and they do stand a better chance of being more meaningful cultural exports. 
 
Thanks to the Internet and the rise of movie piracy, the Chinese audience already has access to good foreign movies. For a film to make money abroad, the key lies in offering something to the crowd that they cannot access otherwise. India has a plethora of options when it comes to selling movies but the Indian ministry may have to look at promoting regional films abroad that do not have pan-India releases. 
 
The Chinese watch Bollywood films and base their assumptions about Indians on these movies. What they don’t see is that most of these films do not really portray the real India. Perhaps there will be a day when a Gujarati film like Kevi Rite Jaish or a Marathi film like Fandry will see a Chinese release. But until that happens, Indians cannot blame the Chinese for assuming that we have a song and dance for every occasion.
