The simplest invitation was in a laptop-sized box with silver statues of three Gods and invitation cards. The guests were asked to confirm their presence through an email or Google Form. Those confirming their presence received a message that read: "We have received your RSVP and we look forward to welcoming you... the QR codes will be shared 6 hours prior to the event." The QR codes messaged to the mobile phones and emailed were scanned to allow entry into the venue where different coloured paper wristbands were tied on the wrist of all the guests that gave them access to different zones depending on the colour. Several film stars and cricketers as well as business tycoons like Korean electronic giant Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong and his wife sported a pink wristband on their wedding day and a red one on Saturday. Employees, security and service staff wore different coloured wristbands. Ushers and a multi-layer security cover secured the sprawling venue, two sources aware of the matter said. Detailed fire and other emergency plans were worked out while an elaborate medical response preparedness resembled one reserved for heads of state. The medical response preparedness included doctors and paramedical staff with all emergency equipment at the venue. Ambulances had clearly demarcated routes to the nearest hospitals which had been primed in advance for dealing with any sort of medical emergency. "The Ambanis did not want to leave anything to chance," a source revealed. The order has also banned DJ (disk jockey) parties, special events and any kind of performances in public places and commercial premises to prevent assembling of large gathering or crowding. Though Covid cases have drastically declined during the month, the city continues to be the epicentre of the pandemic, accounting for over 50 per cent (3,86,908) of the southern state's positive cases and deaths (4,304) till Monday since the virus broke out in March. "In view of the prevailing Covid situation in the city and emergence of a new strain of the virus in the UK, it is essential to enforce preventive and precautionary measures to contain the spread of the disease," Pant said. Unlike on December 31 night of every year, citizens will not be allowed to gather on MG Road, Brigade, Road and Church Street in downtown and other prominent public places across the city to ensure social distancing. "Movement of people and vehicles will be regulated, diverted and restricted to avoid traffic jams and vehicles will be banned from parking in downtown," said the order. Cars and two-wheelers will also be banned from flyovers across the city during the 12-hour ban to prevent mishaps due to drunken driving or drag racing. "Citizens are, however, free to usher in the New Year in their houses, flats, gated communities and residential areas under the guidelines without special events or get-together," the order said. Section 144 to be imposed in Bengaluru on New Year's eve from 6 pm — gatherings banned on MG Road, Brigade Road and Church Street

Bengaluru, Sep 10 (IANS) The Bengaluru City police busted an inter-state ganja sale network and seized a whopping 1,350 kg of the drug worth nearly Rs 4 crore on Thursday. The police has arrested four persons in this connection. Preliminary investigations revealed that the ganja sale network was spread over Odisha, Telangana and Karnataka. The alleged drug smugglers had dug a huge pit (like a silo) in a sheep-rearing farm situated at Kamalapur Taluk in Kalaburagi district which was located nearly 750 km from Bengaluru in the upper-most northern part of Karnataka. "These accused had stored as many as 600 packets totalling 1,350 kg of ganja in this pit," the police said. The pit was filled with the ganja packets and covered with a wooden plank which was then covered with a thick layer of mud. Speaking to reporters, Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Kamal Pant said this was the biggest such seizure in the history of Bengaluru Police. "A day-to-day investigation led to a small clue of an accused selling ganja within Seshadripuram Police station limit, where the police had seized two kg of ganja from the accused. But detailed investigations threw light on how the ganja trade was flourishing as far as Odisha to Bengaluru," the Police Commissioner explained. According to him, the ganja was allegedly grown in the interior forests of Odisha and transported through Telangana in trucks or vehicles carrying vegetables. "These accused used to store it in a pit in a sheep-rearing farm, as nobody could suspect that any such activity was happening in such a remote area. Bengaluru, Sep 10 (IANS) A special team from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has landed here on Thursday to probe the alleged drug dealing case involving Sandalwood stars. Speaking to IANS, a senior police officer said on condition of anonymity that the special team has gathered information about the seizures made by the Central Crime Bureau (CCB) of the police in this connection so far. The CCB too suspects that high-profile party organiser Viren Khanna, who has been arrested in this case, may have an international drug mafia link as he used to host parties across the globe. "A preliminary investigation has revealed that he has established a maze of connections. There are several layers of connections in his dealings, be it in the country or elsewhere. To dig deep into this maze of transactions and dealings, the ED might step in," an officer disclosed. The police, who are also on the lookout for another accused Aditya Alva, who is the son of late minister Jeevraj Alva and brother-in-law of Bollywood star Vivek Oberoi, claims that they need to investigate his role too. Meanwhile, when reporters quizzed the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Kamal Pant about the ED team's arrival, he replied that there was nothing new in investigation agencies meeting and exchanging information. "I am just curious to know why the media always becomes obsessed with one or two cases? Do not link it (ED) to anything as of now.
