<p>To start what she <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mayer-yahoo-chain-reaction-2013-1">calls a "chain reaction,"</a> Yahoo must first hire talented designers and engineers, who will then build great products, which will then attract large audiences, which will then bring in advertisers.</p>
<p>To that end, she is buying startups on the cheap to bring in small, nimble teams and infuse Yahoo with new energy.</p>
<p>It is not the first time a Yahoo CEO has tried this strategy.</p>
<p>In the middle of the past decade, then-CEO Terry Semel and his top lieutenants bought a handful of Web 2.0 startups and also hired innovators to reboot Yahoo.</p>
<p>It was called the "<a href="http://money.cnn.com/magazines/business2/business2_archive/2005/12/01/8364623/">Flickrization of Yahoo</a>," after the famous photo-sharing site, the best-known of Yahoo's acquisitions. Yahoo would transform itself by letting its users create and share content, whether it was photos, event listings, or links. It was a bold strategy meant to counter Google's cold algorithms. </p>
<p>Then there was the day when Beck played a Hack Day event at Yahoo in September 2006.</p>
<p>Hack Days were all-day coding events meant to generate new products quickly, in a fun, loose, open way.</p>
<p>"When we all got together to play, it was explosive," recalls former Yahoo executive <keyword id="1770999" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Kakul-Srivastava">Kakul Srivastava</keyword>. "It was a really generative time ... where openness bred creativity and innovation."</p>
<p><a href="http://ycorpblog.com/2006/10/02/a-little-taste-of-beck/">Beck's surprise appearance</a> at that Hack Day "<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">felt like a high point," Srivastava recalled—a sign that the whole company was backing the effort to hack Yahoo into something new.</span></p>
<p>The effort failed, for a variety of reasons: from Google's unstoppable rise, to a lack of focus that former Yahoo executive <keyword id="1736835" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Brad-Garlinghouse">Brad Garlinghouse</keyword> lambasted in a famous "Peanut Butter Memo," to a lack of engineering resources, to a stifling bureaucracy.</p>
<p>Yahoo, having started down this road early, also missed its chances to acquire the companies that would really matter in social media—YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.</p>
<p>But it did have talent, in spades. And they are now pursuing their potential elsewhere.</p>
<p>Can Mayer put together a dream team that measures up to this generation? We'll see.</p>

THE YAHOO DIASPORA: Where All Its Amazing Talent Ended Up

<p><span>This is because large companies typically have to worry about security, usability, and productivity.</span></p>
<p><span>Tomfoolery is a new startup that wants to solve this problem—in part by approaching it from a completely different perspective. </span></p>
<p><span>CEO and cofounder Kakul Srivastava most recently worked at game maker Tiny Speck, but left last year. </span></p>
<p>Business Insider reported on Tomfoolery's existence and Srivastava's new gig at its helm <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/stewart-butterfield-tiny-speck-glitch-closing-2012-11">at the time of Tiny Speck's closure</a>. Srivastava's old and new companies share an investor, Andreessen Horowitz.</p>
<p><span>The idea behind Tomfoolery is to spice up enterprise mobile apps, making them just as engaging and useful and their consumer counterparts with security and productivity a top priority.</span></p>
<p class="p1">Srivastava and her cofounder, Sol Lipman, think they have the solution to the boring enterprise app trend. Before Tiny Speck, Srivastava was general manager of Yahoo's Flickr photo-sharing service, while Lipman was the VP of mobile for AOL.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Yesterday, the duo <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tomfoolery-a-startup-making-enterprise-2013-1">announced</a> a $1.7 million seed round. Besides Andreessen Horowitz<span>, the investors include Yahoo cofounder Jerry Yang and former TechStars NYC director David Tisch</span>.</span></p>
<p><span>Taking on the task of making mobile-first enterprise apps inspired by the best apps in the consumer market is a daunting task. <span>Lipman <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2013/01/30/tomfoolery-a-mobile-first-consumer-driven-enterprise-app-lab-from-ex-aol-and-yahoo-execs-picks-up-1-7m-from-andreessen-horowitz-jerry-yang-and-more/">told TechCrunch</a> that while he doesn't have much enterprise experience, he thinks "enterprise apps have no soul" and Tomfoolery's team has the background to address that..</span> </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The funds raised will be used to hire a team and develop apps, the first of which will be out in the second quarter.</span></p>

An Ex-AOLer And A Bunch Of Yahoos Got Millions Of Dollars From Andreessen Horowitz To Launch A New Startup

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Matt Weinberger/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">GitHub CEO Chris Wanstrath on stage at GitHub Universe 2015.</p></div><p></p></div></div>San Francisco startup GitHub, which has been called the Facebook for programmers, seems to have it all.</p><p>To date, GitHub has racked up 11 million registered users, over 36 million unique visitors every month, $350 million in venture funding, and<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/github-raises-200-million-worth-2-billion-report-2015-6"> a $2 billion valuation</a>.</p><p>With over 21.1 million code "repositories" at last count, GitHub hosts more software source code than any other single service in the world. </p><p>So where do you go from here? </p><p>According to GitHub CEO Chris Wanstrath, in conversation with Business Insider at today's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/github-universe-2015-ceo-chris-wanstrath-keynote-2015-10">GitHub Universe event</a>, the gameplan is pretty straightforward.</p><p>If most of the world's developers already use and love GitHub - then it needs to help more people become developers.</p><p>"We're thinking about the new developers," Wanstrath says. "We want to lower the barriers to entry." </p><h2>What is GitHub?</h2><p>Before GitHub, building software with a team could be a real mess. It required careful tracking of who was working on what piece of the code, when. The old processes also made it hard to integrate code from outside contributors. </p><p>"We're really inspired by crappy tools," Wanstrath jokes. "We were competing against the old ways of doing things." </p><p>GitHub solves this problem in two major ways:</p><p>First, GitHub's service takes advantage a piece of free software called "Git," first invented in 2005, to help development teams manage their projects and track who contributed what code, when. Since it's all based online, programmers from around the world can use GitHub to work on projects together. </p><p>That's why companies like Google, Facebook, Yahoo, and pretty much everybody else use GitHub to share their so-called "open source" projects,<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-developers-contribute-to-open-source-projects-2015-6"> where developers are encouraged to build on and use their technologies for themselves</a> for free. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mbiddulph/15279120879/in/photolist-pxZ8mv-phaujB">Matt Biddulph via Flickr</a></span></p><p class="caption">GitHub's Oval Office replica.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Second, GitHub is a social network. Developers use it to network, to show off, to discuss, and to generally hang out and get stuff done. </p><p>In today's Silicon Valley, a GitHub profile is more valuable to employers than a traditional resume: If you need a Java programmer who's really good at networking technologies, just find a networking software project on GitHub that's written in Java, look for the top contributors, and start sending inquiry letters.</p><p>GitHub itself uses its own service for recruiting, Wanstrath says. GitHub's success in that regard was a "happy accident," he says, but regardless, it's a powerful force.</p><h2>Riding to success</h2><p>Both of these pieces helped GitHub be in the right place at the right time.</p><p>Thanks to the rise of the smartphone, alongside increasingly ubiqituous Internet access, demand for developers has never been higher.</p><p>At the same time, big enterprises are turning to free software to save cash and get up to huge scales. When you're the size of Google or a Facebook, you can't afford to have <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hhvm-saved-facebook-millions-dollars-2015-7">Windows or Oracle software on every one of your servers</a>. Which means that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-and-yahoo-have-created-influential-open-source-projects-2015-6">companies big and small companies alike need open source developers to help build their infrastructure</a>.</p><p>"Everyone's building software," Wanstrath says. "It's kind of surprising the world is going that way."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>GitHub</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>So lots of companies are hiring developers. But just because you hire 500 developers doesn't mean you're on the right track, Wanstrath says. They also have to work together.</p><p>"They're not a software team," Wanstrath says. </p><p>GitHub is the glue that lets those teams work together, Wanstrath says. By combining the social aspect with the code-tracking aspect, it's a place for developers to talk and learn from each other, even while they build a project.</p><p>And when they sell their paid GitHub <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Enterprise">Enterprise</keyword> software to businesses, teams of developers from across the company suddenly start working together, he says. </p><h2>What's next?</h2><p>GitHub has made its fortune by enabling software teams to work more closely together. But now, with the absolute ubiquity of software everywhere, the world is changing very rapidly. </p><p>"We have this sort of classic understanding of what a developer is," says GitHub VP of Product Kakul Srivastava, who joined the company three months ago after stints at Yahoo and WeWork. "But our understanding of what a developer is, is changing rapidly." </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Twitter</span></p><p class="caption">GitHub VP of Product Kakul Srivastava</p></div><p></p></div></div>Even today, Wanstrath says, there are journalists and scientists who are using GitHub to find, build, and share data-driven applications that assist with research or interactive projects.</p><p>The goal, then, is to gradually make it a lot easier for anybody to get started on the platform. As more and more people get educated as programmers from an early age, Wanstrath wants GitHub to be the service of choice for the next generation to really get their feet wet. </p><p>"It shouldn't be as hard as it is," Srivastava says.</p><p>There's no one big product shift or new software that's going to enable this future, Wanstrath says.</p><p>But, generally speaking, the goal is accelerate the best parts of the service - the collaboration and community aspects - to remove the friction from someone signing up, contributing their first project, and learning how to improve their skills from those 11 million members. </p><p>"Anyone can be a developer," Wanstrath says.</p><h2>Big goals </h2><p>GitHub's growth is impressive.</p><p>But it's facing competitive pressure from the likes of Atlassian, a $3 billion Australian company that's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/atlassian-plans-an-ipo-2015-9">reportedly planning a big $3 billion IPO</a>, tiny startups like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/gitlab-15-million-seed-round-github-code-collaboration-startup-2015-7">GitLab</a>, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-has-quietly-launched-a-github-competitor-cloud-source-repositories-2015-6">Google itself</a>. </p><p>Atlassian, for its part, likes to claim that its BitBucket code management software is better suited for the enterprise than GitHub's, and that it's profitable besides. </p><p>Plus, the last year was not terribly kind to GitHub: In 2014, the tech industry was rocked by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/github-julie-ann-horvath-2014-3">allegations from a top GitHub employee</a> that she had been harassed at work. That incident led to the resignation of co-founder and former CEO Tom Preston-Werner, and the installation of Wanstrath in the top spot.</p><p>Still, Wanstrath doesn't seem too worried. He just wants GitHub to keep focusing on making life easy for the next wave of developers in any way they can, and keep that growth going.</p><p>"Success means your to-do list is getting too large," Wanstrath says. $2 billion startup GitHub's next mission: Turn you into a programmer

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/davefayram/4858487193/">Flickr/by DaveFayram</a></span></p><p class="caption">GitHub co-founder, CEO Chris Wanstrath</p></div><p></p></div></div>We've been hearing about a lot of drama going on at $2 billion startup GitHub, the hugely important and popular site used by millions of computer programmers where ten or more <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/github-loses-vp-of-engineering-susan-lally-2016-2">executives have departed in recent months</a>.</p><p>The more we write about the inner turmoil, the more people step forward to share details and opinions.</p><p>We're hearing these themes repeatedly:</p><ul><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Co-founder CEO Chris Wanstrath, with support from the board, is radically changing the company's culture: out with flat org structure based purely on meritocracy, in with supervisors and middle managers. This has ticked off many people in the old guard.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Its once famous remote-employee culture has been rolled back. Senior managers are no longer allowed to live afar but must report to the office. This was one reason why some senior execs departed or were asked to leave, one person close to the company told us.</span></li><li>Others tell us that key technical people from the old days like CTO Ted Nyman and third cofounder PJ Hyett are mostly absent from the office and not contributing much technically.</li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">GitHub has hit "hypergrowth,"  growing from about 300 to nearly 500 employees in less than a year, with over 70 people joining last quarter alone.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Some longer-term employees feel like there's a "culture of fear" where people who don't support all the changes are being ousted.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In addition to previously reported executive depatures, Business Insider has learned that Ryan Day, VP of business development; Adam Zimman, senior director of technology partnerships; and Scott Buxton, VP of Finance, have all left in the last six months. Buxton departed in January.</span></li></ul><p><span style="line-height: 22.5px;">A GitHub spokesperson declined to give us a statement but pointed us to a comment made by vice president of program management Kakul Srivastava to <a href="https://www.theinformation.com/what-happened-at-github">The Information</a>.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 22.5px;">"We're trying to build a new kind of <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Enterprise">enterprise</keyword> company where the playbooks of old won't always work," she said.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 22.5px;"><span>Srivastava is a former Yahoo and Flickr exec and is part of <span>Wanstrath's new brain trust. She </span></span>joined GitHub in July to revamps its products.</span></p><h2><strong>Overhauling the culture</strong></h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Twitter</span></p><p class="caption">GitHub VP of Product Kakul Srivastava</p></div><p></p></div></div>GitHub is a cloud service that programmers use to store their software projects, share them, and work on them collaboratively in teams. It's used by individual developers and small startups, all the way up to large companies like Apple, Google, and Walmart, and claims 12 million registered users.</p><p>The startup has nabbed $350 million in venture funding from top firms including Sequoia Capital and Andreessen Horowitz, and last year was reportedly valued at $2 billion. </p><p>The company has reportedly been cash-flow positive since its earliest days, and is expected to bring in more than $25 million this quarter, which puts it on track for more than $100 million in annual revenue,<a href="https://www.theinformation.com/what-happened-at-github?token=6052af97be40ce21584f311dbe192252692ba45a"> according to The Information.</a> </p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Owen Thomas, Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">Former GitHub CEO Tom Preston-Werner  shows off the Scotch collection kept at the GitHub office in 2012.</p></div><p></p></div></div><span>Wanstrath</span> became</span> CEO in 2014 after GitHub was embroiled in a sexual harassment scandal by a female employee who quit.</p><p>GitHub's own internal investigation determined that no sexual harassment took place, but said there were other leadership issues going on. Ultimately cofounder CEO Tom Preston-Warner resigned and left the company.</p><p><span>Now, Wanstrath is on a mission to overhaul Github, with full support from the venture capitalists who backed the company.</span></p><p><span>About a year ago, he also phased out the company's old meritocratic structure where no one had managers, and installed a hierarchy, complete with middle managers. Many of the old-school employees were less than pleased, people told us. Suddenly one of their peers was their boss. And the grumblings began.</span></p><p><span>One person told us Wanstrath "is</span> trying to keep everyone happy by not making the hard decisions necessary of leaders." He's been described to us as someone who "hides in conference rooms" and who is being influenced by an inner circle.</p><p>This person tells us that GitHub's top lawyer Julio Avalos "has amassed great power" in the company since Wanstrath took over. <span>Avalos joined GitHub in 2012 from Yelp, according to <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/javalos">his LinkedIn profile</a>. </span>In October he was appointed to Chief Business Officer in which he runs corporate administration functions like legal, HR, finance.</p><p>However, we understand that <span>Wanstrath's current top leadership team, some of whom have been with the company for less than a year, do not feel that way about him.</span></p><p><span> One </span>person close to the company told us that <span>Wanstrath, has a "soft-spoken style, is extremely thoughtful, and a very good listener, listening to perspectives across company. When he makes a decision, he's direct, open and rational about it."</span></p><h2><span></span><span>Like Facebook circa 2009</span></h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters/Robert Galbraith</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>We also understand that <span>Wanstrath is working extremely closely with Andreessen Horowitz's Peter Levine and Sequoia's Jim Goetz, talking with one or both of them almost daily. These are two of the industry's most respected VC investors. </span></p><p><span>One person familiar with <span>Wanstrath's relationship with these VCs told us they are "thrilled" with him and with the changes he's been making at the company.</span></span></p><p><span><span>"Chris wanted to change leadership structure and he made a set of changes. You're going to see a bunch of announcements where new folks are joining," this person said. </span></span></p><p><span><span>"With the benefit of experience, 2-3 years, it's very similar to a set of anecdotes about Facebook, where Sean Parker took off and Gideon Yu, and Owen Van Natta and there's all this drama. And hello? It's a hypergrowth company and it'</span></span><span><span>s a normal upgrade cycle," the person said.</span></span></p><p><span><span>This person says that it's not a knock against the execs who left, but "at times you need a different group of people, when you reach 400, 500 or 1,000 employees."<br /></span></span></p><p><span><span>The person added: </span></span><span><span>"There was a remote culture and very little hierarchical structure which worked wonderfully when they were 30 and 50 people, but at 500, it doesn't work. Chris has decided that the leadership team needs to be in the building and managing, so remote is not an option for senior executives."<br /></span></span></p><h2>Ruffled feathers over diversity</h2><p>One insider criticized GitHub's "social impact team," which is in charge of figuring out how to use the product to tackle social issues, including diversity within the company itself. It's led by <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/nmsanchez">Nicole Sanchez</a>, vice president of Social Impact, who joined GitHub in May after working as a diversity consultant. </p><p>While people inside the company approve of the goal to hire a more diverse workforce, some think the team is contributing to the internal cultural battle.</p><p>"They are trying to control culture, interviewing and firing. Scary times at the company without a seasoned leader. While their efforts are admirable it is very hard to even interview people who are 'white' which makes things challenging," this person said.</p><p>Sanchez is known for some strong views about diversity. She <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/columnist/2015/02/12/women-of-color-diversity-tech-silicon-valley-nicole-sanchez/23298945/">wrote an article for USA Today </a>shortly before she joined GitHub titled, "more white women does not equal tech diversity." </p><p>At one diversity training talk held at a different company and geared toward people of color, she came on a bit stronger with a point that says, "Some of the biggest barriers to progress are white women." Just like change is hard in many ways, you are seeing change is hard with diversity. And it's doing a good job of that, several sources - even the disgruntled ones - told us.</p><p>That means <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/github-identity-crisis-2016-2">there's an effort to hire more enterprise salespeople</a>, with all the suit-and-tie salesforce culture that typically includes. (GitHub employs over <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/vsearch/p?title=sales&amp;company=GitHub&amp;openAdvancedForm=true&amp;titleScope=C&amp;companyScope=CP&amp;locationType=Y&amp;rsid=191233811454623408110&amp;orig=ADVS">80 sales folks according to LinkedIn</a>.)</p><p>And these sales people want the company to create more products for them to sell. </p><p>Meanwhile, the company's millions of developer users, many of whom use the site for free or for a small monthly fee, also want GitHub to pay more attention to them. <span>A bunch of active and influential users sent a letter in </span><a href="https://github.com/dear-github/dear-github">January called "Dear GitHub"</a><span> in which they asked for a bunch of product features, too.
