Patna, May 12 () Bihar reported 15 fresh cases of COVID-19, taking the state's virus tally to 761, a top health department official said on Tuesday.While nine of the patients hail from Begusarai, two are from Darbhanga, one each from Nalanda, Samastipur, Sheikhpura and Supaul districts."We are ascertaining the infection trail," Health Department's Principal Secretary Sanjay Kumar said.Most of the patients are in the 20-40 age group, he said.Coronavirus has spread to 37 of the state's 38districts, leaving Jamui unaffected.Six fatalities have so far been reported -- one eachfrom Patna, Rohtas, Munger, Vaishali, East Champaran and Sitamarhi. Patna, Apr 26 () Four more people tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday, taking the total number of cases reported in Bihar to 255, a top health department official said.The total number of active cases in the state now stand at 197. Two men, one each from Munger and Vaishali district, have died, while 56 have recovered.Of the four cases reported on Sunday, one each belong to Pachdewari, Sadar, Phulwaria and Bhore block of Gopalganj district. They included two men aged 19 and 60 years and two women aged 50 and 60 years, said Principal Secretary, Health, Sanjay Kumar."We are ascertaining their infection trail. These cases were spotted during home screening," he said.The state government had on April 16 launched a door-to-door screening initiative on the lines of the 'Pulse Polio' drive to identify COVID-19 cases in the state. Bihar reported 233 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday as its tally for the dreaded disease shot up to 4,831, the health department said. Significant numbers of cases were reported from north Bihar districts such as Darbhanga, Samastipur, Supaul, East Champaran, West Champaran, Madhubani, Purnea, Saran and Kishanganj. South of the Ganges, the spike was notable in Munger, Bhagalpur, Bhojpur and Kaimur. Four people tested positive in Patna district. No fresh casualties were reported in the state where the death toll remained at 29. Khagaria and Begusarai have reported three casualties each while Patna, Vaishali, Bhojpur, Sitamarhi and Siwan have accounted for two fatalities each. Besides, one death each has been reported from Araria, Bhagalpur, Jamui, Jehanabad, Madhepura, Munger, Nalanda, Nawada, East Champaran, Rohtas, Samastipur, Saran and Sheohar. With 273 cases each, Khagaria and Patna are the worst-hit districts in the state where all the 38 administrative units are affected by the coronavirus outbreak. The state's COVID-19 tally has risen by more than 4,000 in the last one month, though it began reporting cases in March. Bihar's Darbhanga, Samastipur, and others register 233 new coronavirus cases with the state's overall tally rising to 4.831

Patna, May 23 () Sixty-one more people have tested positive for the novel coronavirus in Bihar, taking the total number of COVID-19 cases in the state to 2,166, health department officials said. Of the fresh cases, the highest number was reported in Buxar (13), followed by Khagaria (nine), Gaya (seven), East Champaran (six), five each in Bhagalpur, West Champaran and Sitamarhi, three each in Begusarai, Muzaffarpur and Munger and one each in Arwal and Kaimur districts, they said. Late on Friday evening, the health department tweeted, "61 more COVID-19 +ve cases in Bihar taking the total to 2166. We are ascertaining their trail of infection." The patients from Buxar include two one-year-old boys and a seven-year-old girl, it said. A 22-year-old migrant worker, who died three days ago soon upon his return from Delhi, was acknowledged on Friday as Bihar's 11th COVID-19 fatality by the state health department. According to a senior health department official, the deceased, who belonged to Khagaria district, had returned to the state by a special train on Tuesday. He had a high fever and died within hours of arrival, following which his sample was collected and sent for testing. The report confirmed that he was infected with the dreaded novel coronavirus. Patna, May 17 () At least 33 more people, including a 65-year-old woman, have tested positive for COVID-19 in Bihar, raising the total count in the state to 1,178, a top health department official said. Of the 33 that tested positive, Madhubani district accounts for the maximum number of cases at 14, followed by Bhojpur at six and Samastipur at three, Sanjay Kumar, the principal secretary of the state health department, said. Two cases each were reported from Jamui, Purnea and Siwan and one each from Patna, Bhagalpur, Kaimur and Lakhisarai, he said. "33 more covid-19 +ve cases in Bihar taking the total to 1178.We are ascertaining their further infection trail,"Kumar tweeted late on Saturday. (Eds: Fresh inputs) Patna, May 17 () Bihar on Sunday reported its eighth COVID-19 fatality while 73 people tested positive for coronavirus, taking the total number of cases in the state to 1,251, officials said.A 55-year-old diabetic migrant worker, who fell ill upon return to Bihar from Mumbai and died before his sample was collected, tested positive for coronavirus, and is the state's eighth COVID-19 fatality, they said.The deceased had breathed his last in the wee hours of May 15, upon suffering "cardio pulmonary arrest", at a hospital in Khagaria district where he was admitted upon developing breathing trouble, Principal Secretary, Health, Sanjay Kumar said."Soon after his death, his sample - along with that of his wife - was collected and both tested positive on Saturday. He goes into records as the eighth COVID-19 death in Bihar," the principal secretary said.This is the second instance in Bihar of test report confirming that a person was COVID-19 positive after his death. Two months ago, a resident of Munger district admitted to AIIMS, Patna for renal failure had his samples collected while he was alive but he died on March 21, before test reports came out and his body was taken back to his native district.The number of COVID-19 cases has gone up to 1,251 with 73 reported on Sunday, of which Patna alone accounts for 57 cases, including 18 women. Bihar reports 8th COVID-19 death; total cases rise to 1,251

Patna, May 19 () Nineteen more people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Bihar, raising the total number of such cases in the state to 1,442, a senior health department official said on Tuesday. The number of active cases in the state stands at 916. Of the 19, three each are from Gaya, Nawada and Supaul, two each from Kaimur, Sheikhpura and Madhepura, and one each from Buxar, Samastipur, Jehanabad and Patna, Sanjay Kumar, the principal secretary of the health department, said. "19 more covid-19 +ve cases in Bihar taking the total to 1442.... We are ascertaining their trail of infection. This is last night's report received in the morning," he tweeted. Earlier, on Monday, a 75-year-old COVID-19 patient had died in Bihar. The woman, a resident of Jandaha Hajipur of Vaishali district, breathed her last at Nalanda Medical College and Hospital, following cardiopulmonary arrest, Kumar had said. Patna, May 10 () A 60-year-old COVID-19 patient died at the Patna Medical College and Hospital on Sunday, taking the total number of persons who died after being diagnosed with <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> infection to six, a top health official said. The state also reported 67 fresh cases, the highest single-day spike, raising the total to 696, Principal Secretary, Health, Sanjay Kumar said. The man, who died at the PMCH, was a resident of Belchi area in Barh in Patna district, Kumar said, adding he was in quarantine after returning from Delhi. He was admitted to the state-run hospital on May 8, the official said. "It was a case of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (end stage lung disease), died of cardio respiratory arrest," Kumar said in a tweet. Earlier, Rohtas, Munger, Vaishali, East Champaran and Sitamarhi have reported one death each. Of the 67 fresh cases, 11 each were reported from Nalanda and Munger, nine each from Bhagalpur and Patna, eight from Kishanganj, four from East Champaran, three each from Muzaffarpur and Arwal, two each from Gaya and Nawada, and one each from Araria, Aurangabad, Bhojpur, Samastipur and Khagaria. A 45-year-old COVID-19 patient, who hailed from Sitamarhi district, breathed his last at Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) in Patna on May 2. He was suffering from "terminal stage" lung cancer and died of cardiac arrest. A 54-year-old person from East Champaran who was also suffering from cancer in mouth and throat died at NMCH on May 1, while a 38-year-old person from Munger was the first COVID-19 patient in the state to die. He died on March 21 at the AIIMS-Patna where he was admitted with renal failure and respiratory distress. Another COVID-19 patient from Vaishali, the second casualty in the state, also died at AIIMS-Patna. There are 336 active cases in the state at present, while 354 people have recovered from the infection. Munger has accounted for the most number of cases at 104, while Buxar has reported 56 cases, Rohtas (59) and Patna (58), Siwan (33), Nalanda (39) and Kaimur (33). Patna, May 29 () The COVID-19 toll in Bihar rose to 19 on Friday with the death of a patient while undergoing treatment at a hospital here and samples of two others from Bhojpur and Bhagalpur districts collected after their deaths testing positive, officials said. The number of coronavirus cases in the state also continued to surge with 174 people testing positive, taking the total tally to 3,359. The number of people who have recovered till date stood at 1,209 while 72,256 samples have been tested so far, the health department said. A 62-year-old man from Siwan, who had travelled to Mumbai, was admitted to the Nalanda Medical College Hospital here upon testing positive for the infection. He breathed his last in the afternoon, Hospital Superintendent N K Singh said. He said the man suffered from a number of co-morbidities such as diabetes and high blood pressure and had also suffered a paralytic attack in the past. Bhojpur district registered its second COVID-19 fatality when the sample of a 55-year-old migrant worker, who had died on May 26, tested positive for coronavirus. District Magistrate Raushan Kumar said the man had breathed his last at a government hospital in Tarari block and his sample was collected as per ICMR guidelines before cremation. On Thursday, the sample of another Mumbai returnee, aged 22 years, who had died on May 26 at Sadar hospital in Arrah, tested positive. In Bhagalpur, the sample of a 41-year-old resident of Jagdishpur block who returned from Mumbai on Sunday and died on Wednesday, came positive. The block's medical officer in charge Braj Bhushan Mandal said the person had arrived in a vehicle along with seven others. He had gone home straight without showing up for screening at any of the quarantine centres. The man died while travelling to Bhagalpur town on a three-wheeler to see a doctor later when he developed symptoms. Earlier, Patna, Vaishali and Khagaria districts had reported two casualties each while Munger, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Rohtas, Siwan, Saran, Begusarai, Jehanabad and Nalanda have accounted for one fatality each. Of the fresh COVID 19 cases, Bhagalpur reported 25 cases, followed by Jehanabad and Sheikhpura 20 each, Madhubani 14, Bhojpur and Purnea 12 each, Kaimur 10 and Gopalganj eight. Patna district, the worst-affected in the state with 234 cases till Thursday night, added four fresh cases to its tally. The deceased was the resident of Jandaha Hajipur of Vaishali district and died at Nalanda Medical College and Hospital on Monday, Principal Secretary, Health, Sanjay Kumar said, adding that she died of "cardiopulmonary arrest." The woman was admitted on May 16 in ICU of NMCH after she was referred from Sadar hospital, Vaishali, he said, adding that the patient did not have any travel history nor any contact history. The contagion has claimed a total of nine lives till date that includes two deaths each from Patna and Vaishali while one each from Khagaria, Rohtas, Munger, East Champaran and Sitamarhi. Among the 97 fresh positive cases reported from different districts on Monday, Gopalganj constituted the highest at 31, followed by 14 in Begusarai. Seven cases were reported from Munger, six each from Supaul and Nalanda, five from Muzaffarpur, four each from Bhagalpur, Madhubani and Vaishali, three each from Katihar and Saran, two each from Arwal and Bhojpur and one each from Patna, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Nawada, Purnea and Kaimur. Of the 1,423 positive cases in the state, 652 are migrant labourers who have come from outside the state. Out of 652 positive migrant labourers, the maximum 218 have come from Delhi followed by 141 from Maharashtra, 139 from Gujarat, 36 from Haryana, and 33 from West Bengal. Talking to reporters, Transport Secretary Sanjay Kumar Agarwal said that more than five lakh migrant labourers, students and other passengers have come to Bihar till May 17 in 320 special trains and buses. Around 8.20 lakh more migrant labourers are expected to come to Bihar by 505 special trains in the next eight to nine days, Agarwal said, adding that 76,000 labourers and other passengers arrived in the state by 47 trains on Monday. Officials said 499 have recovered from COVID-19 and the number of active cases was 915. With 165 cases, Patna topped the list of positive cases for the first time since the state reported its first positive case on March 21. Munger with 133 cases stood second. Patna, May 16 () Forty-six more people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Bihar, taking the total number of cases in the state to 1,079, a senior health department official said here on Saturday. Principal Secretary (Health) Sanjay Kumar said these 46 samples tested positive for the virus on Friday. Among the fresh cases, five have been reported from Patna district where the tally has gone up to 105. While one is a 14-year-old girl from the rural Bakhtiyarpur area, the remaining four are male personnel of the Bihar Military Police's 14th battalion, he said. The number of BMP-14 personnel, stationed at Khajpura locality in the city, who have been found infected till date has now reached 25. The chain of infection in the area began with a 32-year-old woman from Bijli Gali by-lane testing positive last month upon being admitted to AIIMS, Patna with breathing trouble. Within a few days, nearly 20 residents of the by-lane fell prey to the contagion which also spread to nearby localities like Raja Bazar and a slum located close to the Bihar Public Service Commission office on Bailey Road. At least five barracks of BMP-14, besides Bijli Gali, the slum close to BPSC and Machhli Gali by-lane in Raja Bazar have been declared as containment zones, Patna District Magistrate Kumar Ravi said, adding that the lockdown is being enforced in the strictest form in these localities. Seven more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Jamui district, which reported its first case on May 12 and now has altogether 10 patients, the principal secretary said. Eighteen more cases were reported from Banka district while 10 people tested positive for COVID-19 in Sheikhpura, three in Katihar and two in Aurangabad. A two-year-old boy tested positive for COVID-19 in Munger district which accounts for the maximum number of 123 confirmed cases. All the 38 districts in the state have been affected by the pandemic and those with a high incidence also include Rohtas (77), Kaimur (66) and Buxar (59). The number of cases in Bihar has risen sharply since the beginning of the month, mainly because of migrants returning to their native places in large numbers by special trains in addition to other modes of transport. According to the state health department, 427 migrants arriving since May 4 have tested positive for COVID-9. Most of them had come from Delhi (112), Gujarat (106) and Maharashtra (97). Close to three lakh migrants have returned to the state from other parts of the country in 'Shramik Special' trains while the total number, including those coming by buses, trucks, bicycles and on foot, is estimated to be in excess of a million. Till date, 44,398 samples have been tested in the state and efforts were on to enhance the testing capacity drastically to contain the infection. At present, testing of samples is held at four places in Patna and one each in Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga and Bhagalpur. The rate of testing was adversely affected because the testing facility at Bhagalpur ran short of cartridges on Friday, though the principal secretary said replenishment will be ensured at the earliest. (Eds: Updating with fresh cases) Patna, May 13 () The death toll due to the novel coronavirus increased to seven in Bihar on Wednesday after a 56-year-old woman died of the disease, while 74 people, including a 20-day-old boy, tested COVID-19 positive, taking the state's tally to 953, an official said.The woman and the infant, the youngest coronavirus patient in the state so far, are from Patna district, which has 99 confirmed cases of the infection, according to Principal Secretary for Health Sanjay Kumar.He said the woman, a resident of Alamganj locality in the city, breathed her last at a hospital following a cardiopulmonary arrest. "She was suffering from multipleailments like cancer of the gall bladder, acute renal failure, obstructive jaundice, haemorrhoids with active bleeding and sepsis," Kumar said.She tested COVID-19 positive on May 10, he said, adding that she had no travel and no contact history.The boy is a resident of Belchhi block in rural Patna, which is emerging as yet another hotspot. Besides the child, a 49-year-old Belchhi resident tested positive on theday. Barh block in the district also accounted for two cases while one person tested positive in Khusroopur.In Patna city, four people two of them personnel of the Bihar Military Police's 14th Battalion tested positive. The remaining two were residents of Agamkuan and Raja Bazar localities, situated far apart.Among the BMP personnel was a 27-year-old woman. Altogether 21 personnel of the battalion stationed at the Khajpura locality, which constitutes roughly half of the cases in Patna district, have tested positive till date.The state home department has issued a notification announcing that it is closing down one of its offices situated inside the Patel Bhawan for sanitisation in view of one of its staff members coming in contact with a COVID-19 positive person. (Eds: With fresh updates) Patna, May 13 () A 56-year-old woman became the seventh COVID-19 casualty in Bihar on Wednesday while a 20-day-old boy was among 53 people who tested positive for coronavirus, as the state's tally rose to 932, a top official said. According to Principal Secretary (Health) Sanjay Kumar, the woman and the 20-day-old boy -- the youngest COVID-19 patient in the state so far -- were from Patna district, which is the second worst affected city in the state with 94 confirmed cases till date. Of the 94 COVID-19 cases in Patna, about 20 are the personnel deployed at the Bihar Military Police's 14th Battalion in Khajpura locality, which accounts for nearly half of the cases in the district. The 56-year-old woman, a resident of Alamganj locality in the city, breathed her last at NMCH hospital following a "cardiopulmonary arrest", the principal secretary said, adding that she suffered from multiple ailments like cancer of the gall bladder, acute renal failure, obstructive jaundice, hemorrhoids with active bleeding and sepsis. She was recently diagnosed with cancer at the Mahavir Arogya Sansthan charitable hospital in the city from where she was referred to NMCH on May 8. The baby boy is a resident of Belchhi block in rural Patna, which is emerging as yet another COVID-19 hotspot. Besides the child, a 49-year-old Belchhi resident and two women from Patna city are among the 53 people who tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday.
