He serves as a showrunner and co-director on the project. It's now one of the top videos appearing under the "political campaign" search results on TikTok. Russell has also gained more than 400,000 followers.Russell, a Democrat running for a Florida House seat in the US Congress, told Insider he's a big believer in TikTok, calling it the future of political communications, but said the platform doesn't require a "deep political strategy."Russell, who currently serves on the Board of Commissioners in Miami, said he has no schedule or team helping him with his TikTok content. He said he finds himself scrolling on the app to see what memes are trending. He then works on ways to weave his political values in with trends he finds humorous in order to create his posts — much like the average TikTok user.<h2>Garnering the TikTok vote means getting Gen Z's attention </h2>Russell's videos can perhaps be summed up in a TikTok he posted in July, mocking the <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@kenforflorida/video/7119910714399231278?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7078805653926512170">Steve Buscemi "How do you do, fellow kids"</a> meme. He said using the platform is ultimately about a politician trying to connect with younger generations through humor. "It has to do with fun authenticity," Russell said. "Entertainment, then engagement, and then education." Research suggests personal relatability in politicians is important to younger generations. A study from the University of North Florida found that <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/1369118X.2022.2027500">Gen Z users on Instagram</a> connected with politicians like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-instagram-stories-washington-dc-2018-11">Reps. Alexandria-Ocasio Cortez</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/madison-cawthorn-expose-republicans-election-defeat-dark-maga-2022-5">Madison Cawthorn</a>, who they felt shared personal aspects of their job and life on the platform and engaged in two-way communication.One of the authors of the study, John Parmlee, told Insider that he had shown Russell's "vote-trap" video to his Gen-Z son, who said it worked because of the relatability and humor. A study in the UK found that TikTok is one of the fastest growing <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/jul/21/tiktok-is-fastest-growing-news-source-for-uk-adults-ofcom-finds">news sources</a> for young adults.Eric Wilson, a Republican strategist, told The New York Times that Democrats may find it more rewarding to use TikTok to curry favor with younger audiences, who are <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2018/03/20/1-trends-in-party-affiliation-among-demographic-groups/">more likely to vote blue</a> than Republicans, who are often trying to engage older voters with different values.Democratic politicians may have taken note of this, as some of the most active and popular politicians on TikTok are Democrats.Sen. Nancy Pelosi</a>. Maria Elvira Salazar in November.But Russell says TikTok has helped give him a large audience and encourages newer politicians to take advantage of the platform. "There is no other world where you can reach your audience so directly and so viscerally without paying for it," Russell said. "In fact, you can't pay for it."Social media has helped younger, less-experienced, and lesser-known candidates increase the number and amount of donations they receive for their campaigns, <a href="https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2836323">a 2016 study found.</a>The study also found that donations rose for politicians who posted original content, used words associated with "anti-establishment" ideals, or appear to be plugged into mainstream topics.Ananya Sen, an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University, and one of the study authors, told Insider that while pre-social media campaigns relied heavily on paid advertisements, social media has changed the game. "Now you can have a viral moment which makes you reasonably popular and that can lead to more funnels, getting you name recognition," Sen said. Despite TikTok's wide reach, the success of newer candidates who engage on the platform is still up in the air. Candidates like <a href="https://www.insider.com/joshua-collins-democratic-socialist-is-washingtons-tiktok-candidate-2020-1">Joshua Collins</a> in Washington, Minnesota Democrat Matt Little, and Arkansas Democrat Kelly Krout, all used TikTok to campaign but lost their races in 2020, Insider reported.There have also been candidates who have won their races, but it is unclear how much TikTok contributed. Georgia newcomer Sen. Jon Ossoff, who <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ossoff-latest-politician-to-tap-into-tiktok-young-voters-georgia-2020-12">used TikTok</a> to promote his campaign, won his race in 2020. Rep. Christina Haswood, another TikTok-user during her campaign, <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@haswoodforks/video/6857669003058482437?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7078805653926512170">won her 2020 race</a> for the Kansas House of Representatives."If I can pull this off as the underdog…it's gonna say something about the platform, I think, because I've invested a lot of time into it," Russell said.

He wants to&#xa0;offer a cheaper alternative to the exorbitant costs of ordinary printer ink.Sharma recently invented "Kaala," a device that can gobble up harmful pollutants and instantly repurpose them, with a little help from alcohol and oil, into black printer ink.One day, Sharma hopes to commercialize the device so it can live in every home around the world.&#xa0;The idea came to him after one-too-many smog-filled trips to his home country of India."On a hot summer day, if you take a handkerchief and rub it on your skin, the handkerchief actually turns a little brownish-blackish in color," says Sharma, a scientist at MIT's Media Lab. "So we thought, 'How do we repurpose something we complain about on an everyday basis into something that is a utility?'"For the device to work, it first needs to be exposed to exhaust. In <a href="https://vimeo.com/87233029">his demo</a>, Sharma uses the flame of a candle.While the candle burns, a suction pump pulls in the surrounding air to a simple mechanism that separates the carbon black - a byproduct of combustion - from the rest of the air. It then traps the soot in a small chamber to be mixed with alcohol - in this case, vodka - and a drop of olive oil.Lastly, the newly formed liquid can be injected into an ordinary ink cartridge for everyday use.<div><div class="vimeo-embed-container"><iframe src="//player.vimeo.com/video/87233029?autoplay=0&amp;loop=0" frameborder="0" webkitallowfullscreen="" mozallowfullscreen="" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div></div>Sharma admits the black could still be blacker. Since it was designed as a research project, Kaala would also need to hold up against formal toxicity standards before it can&#xa0;hit the market."With a little bit of research," he says, "it can become as good as the printing ink HP sells to you."&#xa0;Sharma estimates a 4-year-old diesel engine could produce enough carbon to fill an HP cartridge within 60 minutes. A chimney would take only 10 minutes approximately.Recreating that ink wouldn't take much effort."Usually, people don't know about this, but the ink you're buying is nothing," he says. "It's just carbon black mixed with a few chemicals, and that's all. He slammed the entire opposition, including state parties, and said growth and development stalled in the state because the BJP was out of power for 14 years. 
 He hit out at the ruling <keyword id="6354265" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="samajwadi-party">Samajwadi Party</keyword> (SP), which split yesterday, and <keyword id="6356515" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bahujan-Samaj-Party">Bahujan Samaj Party</keyword> (<keyword id="6355170" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSP">BSP</keyword>), which is grappling with black money allegations, and the Congress which has been having trouble regaining its lost glory in Uttar Pradesh. 
 
"There is one party with minimal presence in UP, that is trying for 15 years to establish their leader but with little success. There is another party trying to save money and there is one more party trying to save their own family," the PM said at what the BJP has dubbed the 'Parivartan Rally' or the rally for change. 
 
He also made a point that he made sure that his party wants to work for the people and not hoard black money or save their family. 
 
“Some want to save their black money, some want to save their 'parivaar'. But BJP is the only party that will work to save the people,” he said. 
 
He also said that all the parties, for the first time has come together against him as they are intimidated by what he is doing and it will harm them. 
 
“For the first time in years, SP and BSP share the same opinion on one issue: 'Modi hatao'. But I say 'corruption hatao, kaala dhan hatao'. Now, it's up to the people to decide what they want,” PM modi said. 
 
The first party he referred to was the Congress, which has seen its political fortunes wane compared to its glory days in Uttar Pradesh in the 1970s and the 1980s. 
 The second party he referred to was Mayawati's BSP which has not been able to shake off the taint of corruption allegations. The third party he was referring to was the Samajwadi Party, which split yesterday following months of bickering between father <keyword id="6357168" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mulayam-Singh-Yadav">Mulayam Singh Yadav</keyword> and his chief minister son Akhilesh. 
 
The PM also said that even though the BJP has not been in power in Uttar Pradesh, that doesn't bother him and his party but the fact that there has been minimal development in UP. 
 
“Kuch log kehte hain BJP ka 14 saal ka vanvaas khatam hoga, mudda BJP ke vanvaas ka nahin hai. Mudda 14 saal ke vanvaas ka nahin, 14 saal ke liye Uttar Pradesh mein vikaas ka vanvaas ho gaya hai,” he said. 
 
India, he said, can't prosper and grow unless Uttar Pradesh prospers and grows. 
 
The PM also predicted a win for the BJP in the upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh. 
 
“Political pundits pontificate on the outcome of the UP elections. But after seeing this crowd gathered here, there's no need for them to expend further efforts. It is clear which way the wind is blowing,” PM said.
