Health Minister KK Shailaja said hitherto the amount was Rs 2 lakh for each beneficiary. "For those who want to undergo surgery to become males, a maximum of Rs 2 lakh was given. But due to the number of surgeries and mounting expenses involved, this amount has now been increased to Rs 5 lakh. Likewise, those who want to undergo corrective surgery to become females, the amount has been fixed at Rs 2.50 lakh," said Shailaja. Kerala was the first state to formulate a <keyword id="6358953" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Transgender">transgender</keyword> policy. It has come up with special schemes for transgenders in social welfare and education fields. Kerala hikes allowance to transgenders for sex-change surgeries

A four-month-old baby girl, who had tested positive for COVID-19 and suffering from congenital heart disease, died in a hospital here in Kerala early Friday after suffering a cardiac arrest, officials said. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="75341330" title="Coronavirus cases in India count hits 23,000 mark— 718 dead and 4,748 recovered as of April 24" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> This is the third COVID-19 death and the first infant fatality in the state where two elderly people had succumbed to the disease earlier. The baby was admitted to the <keyword id="27558" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Medical-college">Medical College</keyword> Hospital here on April 21 with history of fever, cough, breathing difficulties and seizure after being treated at two other hospitals and the end came at 6 am, a medical bulletin said. <keyword id="8707488" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="state-health-minister-kk-shailaja">State Health Minister KK Shailaja</keyword> said doctors had made maximum efforts to save the life of the child, whose family belonged to Payyanad near Manjeri in <keyword id="417491" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Malappuram-district">Malappuram district</keyword>. "Preliminary information which we have is that there has been some primary contact", she told reporters in Thiruvananthapuram. The protocol for COVID-19 cases would be followed for the baby's last rites, the Minister added. As of Thursday, the total active COVID-19 cases in the state stood at 129. The bulletin said on arrival at the hospital on Tuesday the baby was in shock and had respiratory failure. "She was resuscitated, mechanically ventilated and appropriate antibiotics for pneumonia and supportive measures to correct shock were started", it said adding the baby, however, continued to remain sick. "Even though there was no history of any high or low-risk contact or any epidemiological links as the child comes fromSARI (Severe Acute Respiratory infection) criteria, she was admitted to the COVID-ICU and swab was taken and she tested positive", the bulletin said. Contact tracing of those who had come in contact with the child was in progress. Mallapuram District Medical Officer (Health) Dr Sakeena Ksaid the child, was having severe health issues from its birth itself and was admitted to a private hospital in Manjeri near here with a breathing problem. As her condition worsened, the baby was shifted to another hospital and later to the medical college hospital. Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 14 (IANS) Authorities have begun to distribute coronavirus vaccine doses to various districts in Kerala for the first phase of the vaccination drive, health officials said on Thursday. The distribution of the vaccine doses to central and north Kerala district centres commenced from Kochi and Kozhikode and to southern districts from Thiruvananathapuram. The vaccination drive will cover 3,68,866 health workers in the first phase beginning on January 16. Health Minister KK Shailaja said: "The Health Department is geared up for the vaccination drive. We are stocking vaccine doses at all local points. As already announced, the vaccination drive will be carried out at 133 centres in the first phase." --IANS str/sdr/tsb

Kerala begins to send corona vaccine doses to districts

Thiruvananathapuram, Jan 13 (IANS) A consignment of nearly 3 lakh doses of coronavirus vaccine as part of the first batch arrived in Kerala on Wednesday, officials said. As many as 2,99,500 doses were flown by GoAir flight to Nedumbassery airport at Kochi, as part of 4,33,500 doses proposed to be sent to Kerala in the first batch. The second consignment of 1,34,000 doses will reach Thiruvananathapuram on Wednesday evening. As many as 1,19,500 doses will be transported to Kozhikode from Kochi for distribution in north Kerala. The vaccine doses will be stored at facilities created at Thiruvananathapuram, Kozhikode and Kochi, before they are transported to other districts in Kerala through refrigerated vans. Storage facilities have also been created in all districts, from where the vaccine doses will be ferried to 133 centres across Kerala where the vaccination drive is proposed to be taken up. First batch of corona vaccine doses reaches Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, On a day when Kerala continues to keep its test positivity rate below 11 per cent while recording 7,007 more coronavirus cases, Bollywood star <keyword id="1671" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shah-Rukh-Khan">Shah Rukh Khan</keyword> on Wednesday donated 20,000 N-95 masks to the southern state. At present, there are 78,420 active case in Kerala. <keyword id="583206" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="State-Health">State Health</keyword> Minister KK Shailaja, while thanking Khan, said that 7,252 patients had tested negative during the day, taking total cured patients to 4,22,410 in the state. In the past 24 hours, 64,192 samples was send for testing. The corona death toll rose to 1,771 as 29 more patients died on Wednesday. Across the state, 3,15,246 persons are under observation at various places, including 19,034 in hospitals. There are 622 hotspots in the state.

Thiruvananthapuram, May 3 () No new positive cases ofCOVID-19 were reported in Kerala on Sunday, even as thegovernment declared four more regions in the state ashotspots, taking the total to 84.The total of number of affected people in the stateremains 499.The state had on May 1 reported no fresh cases of thevirus, even as one person tested positive for the disease onSaturday."One person from Kasaragod, who was under treatment inKannur, was cured of coronavirus on Sunday and there are nofresh cases of COVID-19 in the state today," Health Minister KK Shailaja said in a medical bulletin.Till now, 401 people have been cured in the state andthere are 95 under treatment in Kerala."As of today, there are 21,720 people under observationin the state, out of which 388 are in isolation wards ofvarious hospitals.Till now, 32,217 samples have been sent for testing," shesaid.The government has declared four more regionsin state ashotspots, taking the total number to 84.Kannur has 37 positive cases, the highest in the state,followed by Kottayam with 18 cases and Idukki and Kollam with12 cases each. New Delhi, May 19 () Early action to be prepared to deal with coronavirus, upgrading testing facilities, intense contact tracing and counselling people about their reluctance towards hospitalisation, were among the many steps that helped Kerala in effectively dealing with the COVID-19 outbreak, the state's Health Minister KK Shailaja said on Tuesday. Shailaja, who has been widely praised for the southern state's robust response to the pandemic and flattening the COVID-19 curve, reflected on the low number of cases and fatalities in Kerala in comparison to other states while delivering a lecture online for students of the St Stephen's college here on 'The Practice of Public Policy and Administration'. "Our first thought was that no one with the coronavirus should die because of our lack of care. A protocol to combat the virus, with detailed guidelines and standard operating practices besides intense contact tracing measures, was also devised before the first patient was tested positive for the coronavirus," the minister said. "A mental health team, consisting of over 1,000 trained counsellors, would call those isolated in hospitals or quarantined at home to alleviate their mental distress. There were many tourists who were tested for COVID-19 and their results were positive. They were not sent to their countries but were treated in Kerala. Marginal labourers were taken care off by providing them with all the required logistics and thereafter they were sent across to their respective states," she added. The minister also expressed displeasure over insufficient financial allocation for the state by the Centre. The health minister's lecture was part of a six-day certificate course to understand public policy and its implementation by St Stephen's Centre for Advanced Learning (SCAL) which was set up in February this year. "There was an initial reluctance that people had towards getting hospitalised and tested, but with the help of the district administration, we were able to provide confidence and all required support to the patients and others," she said. The Kerala Health Minister, popularly known as Shailaja Teacher said the coordination between the state government and various agencies from different districts played a crucial role. On February 27, the government of India on a special Air India flight evacuated 119 Indians, who were stranded onboard on a coronavirus hit cruise ship, Diamond Princess, in Japan. Apart from that, the government has also rescued 76 Indians from China’s <keyword id="208994" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wuhan">Wuhan</keyword> region after two successful flights which evacuated more than 400 Indians from Wuhan, which is the epicentre of the new coronavirus outbreak. The evacuated citizens were kept in the <keyword id="6354416" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> facility in Manesar. The facility was divided into sectors, and further into barracks to keep the evacuated students segregated. A daily medical examination was conducted for all students at the medical facility in the Army area. All the staff and health care professionals were provided with personal protective equipment (PPE) to wear at all times. The deadly virus is spread over 70 countries and has so far infected more than 88,000 people, including over 80,000 in China. China alone reported 42 new fatalities from coronavirus, on Sunday(March 2), taking the death toll in the country to over 3,000. Just three days ago, Health Minister of Kerala, KK Shailaja, announced that the three students who had earlier tested positive for coronavirus, have now been cured after treatment.
