'I want to know what role Comey played in this process': Lindsey Graham says the Senate Judiciary Committee could force the former FBI director to testify about the 2016 election

He stole every scene he was in playing the bumbling bodyguard of disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding, who took part in the attack on Harding's rival, Nancy Kerrigan. He followed that by gaining "that guy" status showing up in movies like "BlacKkKlansman" and "Late Night," as well as TV series like "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" and "Cobra Kai."But playing Richard Jewell is a life-changing moment for the actor. His biggest role to date is also smack dab in the middle of the award season. And Hauser should receive accolades, as his performance - mixed with emotion, humor, and frustration - is the lifeblood of the movie.Business Insider talked with Hauser about getting the role (which actually wasn't that hard, Eastwood didn't even want him to audition), the research he did to play Jewell, and how improv with Sam Rockwell on set led to an explosive scene.This interview has been edited for length and clarity.Jason Guerrasio: It sounds like you're in Thailand with Spike Lee making "Da 5 Bloods" and you get the call that Eastwood wants you for "Richard Jewell."Paul Walter Hauser: Yeah, I was entertaining a pretty lucrative TV deal and I get a call two days later while we're negotiating and they were like, "Hey, we don't have it all figured out but there's a verbal offer from Clint and his camp to star in his new film." And I was like, "What the hell are you talking about?"Guerrasio: And it's not like, "Come in and read," the role is yours.Hauser: Correct. There's no audition. And I felt this is highly peculiar. [Laughs.] I basically had a couple of days to think it over and read the script. The TV people on that deal, they basically said, "You need to give us an answer." I grew up the son of a pastor and there's a thing in the Bible of you can operate out of fear or love, and love casts out fear, you don't have any fear if you have love. So I was thinking about it and I felt fear would tell me to take this money job on this TV show, love would tell me to try to see if this Clint Eastwood thing is real. I turned the TV deal down and then I was still in Thailand for three more weeks and the whole time I'm thinking, did I just make the biggest mistake ever? And three weeks later I met Clint. Claire Folger/Warner Bros.(L-R) Paul Walter Hauser and Clint Eastwood on the set of "Richard Jewell."Guerrasio: But when you're in Thailand, did you talk to anyone on the set or Spike, just to use as a sounding board?Hauser: I should have been hush-hush but I definitely confided in three or four cast members on the film and asked for their advice. I think they all thought I was doing the right thing. There's no guarantee you are going to work with master filmmakers like Clint and Spike. And now that I have seen the film and the reception it has had, holy cow did I ever make the right decision. Guerrasio: To dive into the character, was the research and prep similar to what you did with Shawn Eckardt for "I, Tonya"?Hauser: I would say it was the exact same amount of research. It was watching some footage, talking to some of the people who knew him. With Shawn Eckardt I tracked down the guy who turned him in to the FBI. Guerrasio: Oh, wow.Hauser: I totally did it without telling anyone. But with Richard Jewell it was easier because Bobi Jewell (Richard's mother, played by Kathy Bates in the movie) and Watson Bryant (the attorney played by Sam Rockwell) literally flew out to Warner Bros. and had a three-hour meeting with us on the lot. I would say the harder part wasn't getting info, the harder part was just deciphering what to focus on for the sake of the actual story at hand. Because sometimes as an actor, you get plagued with so much information you have to pick and choose.ReutersRichard Jewell testifying to the House Judiciary Committee that the FBI had tried to humiliate him.Guerrasio: For this role, what were you keying in on that had to be right?Hauser: I knew I had to get the voice down. Even the voice I tempered a bit. I knew his voice was almost cartoonishly southern, so I had to meet in the middle and bring my own voice into it while still honoring Richard's voice. Hair and makeup was important. And also just loving other people. This guy had a big heart and he wasn't simple minded in wisdom and knowledge, he was simple in how he lived his life. I really didn't want to eat up the scenes, it wasn't like "BlacKkKlansman" where I was really going for it. I wanted you to feel like you had seen or met Richard in real life. Guerrasio: Jonah Hill at one time was going to play this role.Hauser: Yes.Guerrasio: He's still on the movie as a producer, did you want to reach out to him at all and talk shop about the role?Hauser: My whole life I have sort of done my own thing. I rarely ask permission, I sometimes ask forgiveness. So I really didn't consult with anyone outside of the source material and my own warped sense of creativity. Guerrasio: Clint is known for working fast, when did you feel you got into a groove?Hauser: I think that second or third week. The first week is always tough. Everybody is trying to find their sea legs. Early on, we shot a scene where Kathy brings the pound cake out and I'm picking at it before I go out to work at the park. That scene was maybe the first scene where I was like, "This is good, I like the beats I'm taking." I think the best acting is when you just see the thoughts on a character's face. Guerrasio: You have so much time with Sam Rockwell in this movie, how important was it to have someone to act across from consistently?Hauser: I think my best acting is always when I have one or two people to get really intimate and friendly with off set and bring that relationship on set. So I think working with Sam was an example of when you really get into one another and become friends you probably make the work better. That's my process. Guerrasio: So you and Sam hit it off before cameras started rolling?Hauser: Absolutely. It was a combination of embracing our sense of humor and who we actually are. And that helped in trusting one another to improvise mid-scene.Guerrasio: The one scene I think of a lot is Sam digging at you in the living room after all the media attention and FBI visits, and finally you explode and get really angry. Is that an example of trusting one another with improv?Hauser: That scene was crazy because there was a scripted version and we did it but it wasn't feeling exactly right. We weren't sure how to make that scene work, but we knew there had to be a moment where I broke. So we did a couple of versions and in between we were literally doing it fully improvised. What you see on screen in that scene is half improv, half scripted. Me breaking the cookie jar lid, that was something I told our camera operator, Stephen Campanelli, "I'm going to break this lid, we only have one of these jars, so on the last take make sure you get it." So we just tried to find it in the moment. I walked away feeling deeply insecure that the scene didn't work. But I watched the edit and Joel Cox, Clint's longtime editor, really did it right. Guerrasio: Through this whole time, filming, doing press, have you ever grabbed Clint and asked him, "Why me?"Hauser: I never posed it to him in that exact way but there have been moments where I have thanked him and he ushers the thank you away. Me, Sam, and Olivia [Wilde, who plays the reporter who gets the story that Jewell was a suspect] wrapped out on the last night and the crew clapped as they told us it was a wrap and I just balled my eyes out. I just realized I had this moment of working with some of my heroes. It was very emotional. Clint gave me a big hug and said, "This movie wouldn't have happened without you." I just blubbered. And based on his most recent findings, the next year may not be so pretty for the red-hot sector - and, by extension, the market at large.Paulsen has concocted a measure for assessing "trendiness," which he defines as the number of weeks the tech sector's relative total return has either outperformed or underperformed the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/s&amp;p_500" target="_blank" rel="noopener">S&amp;P 500</a>, on a trailing one-year basis. By his methodology, a "persistent trend" requires that the measure meets or exceeds the previous week's reading.His findings are reflected in the chart below. As you can see, tech "trendiness" is at its highest level in 15 years, having spiked into its top quintile - an event that's happened infrequently over the years.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="https://leutholdgroup.com/">Leuthold Group</a></div></div></div>So what does that mean for the future of tech stocks? If history is any indication, the sector could be in for a rude awakening. Paulsen finds that, since 1990, top-quintile tech trendiness has resulted in 11% lower average returns, relative to the S&amp;P 500. This divergence is reflected below.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="https://leutholdgroup.com/">Leuthold Group</a></div></div></div>Paulsen also finds that overextended tech trendiness whips up price swings, which can make losses worse during turbulent times."Once trendiness reaches the top quintile, the risk of future underperformance rises significantly," he wrote in a client note. "It also significantly increases relative return volatility."As for the broader market, Paulsen finds that it too is adversely affected by immense tech trendiness. A top-quintile reading has been associated with a future average-annualized weekly return of only 2.74% for the S&amp;P 500, which he notes is aberrantly low, relative to history.Ultimately, however, Paulsen qualifies his findings with the assurance that top-tier tech trendiness is not necessarily a deathknell for the sector, nor the broader market.It simply implies that a repricing may be in order for both - which hasn't always meant a major, bone-rattling market meltdown. Still, he stresses caution for tech bulls still riding high off recent success."They possess considerable positive price momentum, have sexy stories, offer huge future growth prospects, and are immensely popular with most investors," he said. "It's a difficult time to sell! Perhaps though, technology has trended into a sell signal? A Wall Street investment chief says tech stocks have gotten too trendy for their own good - and explains why that could lead to market-wide pain

Republicans and Democrats in Congress don't agree on very much these days - but they'll stand together when it comes to Seersucker suits.&#xa0;<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Yesterday, Congress celebrated the annual Seersucker Thursday and flooded Twitter with congressional selfies.<div><div></div></div>Eager to show off his southern-inspired fashion sense,&#xa0;House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was just one of the representatives to get in on the action, as seen in this photo with Rep. Patrick McHenry yesterday.<div><div></div></div>&#xa0;The tradition dates back to the days when the U.S. Capitol Building lacked air conditioning, and "senators from the South had much to teach their colleagues from other regions about proper attire," according to the <a href="http://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/common/generic/SeersuckerThursday.htm">Senate historian</a>.&#xa0;&#xa0;<div><div></div></div>&#xa0;When air conditioning was installed, seersucker suits became less popular among members of Congress.&#xa0;Lucky, the seersucker tradition was revived in the 1990s by Mississippi Senator Trent Lott. Hoping to show that the "the Senate isn't just a bunch of dour folks wearing dark suits and in the case of men - red or blue ties," Lott&#xa0;encouraged his colleagues to wear seersucker suits on a designated Thursday in June.&#xa0;<div><div></div></div>&#xa0;In 2004, Senator Dianne Feinstein of California worked to boost female participation in the tradition. In 2005, 11 of the 14 female senators wore seersucker suits that Feinstein had given them as a gift.&#xa0;<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>This year, many women participated by wearing seersucker attire.&#xa0;&#xa0;<div><div></div></div>Seersucker suits became popular after a New Orleans clothier designed the fabric in 1907.&#xa0;The tradition almost died in 2012. On the night before the designated Thursday, the staff of the Senate cloakroom notified members of Congress that the tradition was coming to an end. Many in the Senate felt that "it would be politically unwise to be seen doing something frivolous when there's so much conflict over major issues," reported the <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/dana-milbank-the-seersucker-bond-unraveled/2012/06/26/gJQArzoJ5V_story.html">Washington Post</a>.&#xa0;<div>&#xa0;Although Lott was no longer a Senator (he became a lobbyist in 2008), he fought to keep the tradition alive.&#xa0;</div><div>&#xa0;</div><div>"Some say you don't want to make it look like the Senate's being jovial with all these serious things going on," Lott told the Dana Milbank of the Washington Post. "My view is you can't get serious things done because you don't have events where you can enjoy each other's company."</div><div>&#xa0;</div><div><div></div></div>&#xa0;Lott returned to the Capitol Building yesterday to celebrate the tradition.&#xa0;<div><div></div></div>&#xa0;Lousiana Congressman Bill Cassidy worked to keep the tradition alive in 2014, noting, "seersucker is more than fabric - it's a symbol of American made products that create manufacturing, shipping and sales jobs across the country. However, the amount of movies that worked between the release of "Avengers: Infinity War" in late April to "Crazy Rich Asians" this past weekend was staggering.So what was so different from this summer season compared to last? Could a MoviePass bump be the reason?Since the movie-ticket subscription service changed to a $9.95-per-month model to see one movie a day, it has gained over 3 million subscribers. And its members used the service so much over this summer that MoviePass barely stayed in business by August."Credit MoviePass a little," Jeff Bock, senior analyst for Exhibitor Relations, told Business Insider. I would lay any boom or bust more at the doorstep of social media than any other factor."What everyone can agree on is that the 2018 box office has been fueled by the success of movie sequels this summer, which in past years have not done so well. However, in 2018 it seems Hollywood concocted the perfect formula of franchises audiences wanted to see - "The Avengers," "Mission: Impossible," "Incredibles," "Deadpool," "Jurassic World" - and followed through by making good sequels."There were really no high-profile bombs this summer," Bock pointed out. "That's a lot of credit for Hollywood, as audiences are more apt to sample another sequel if the hits keep coming. Negative reviews and media scrutiny can actually erode the entire box office when bombs are dropping left and right."But the hit sequels are not a surprise at the studios. Universal's president of domestic theatrical distribution, Jim Orr, told Business Insider that last year's stories about the death of the summer movie season were greatly exaggerated."I promise you this is not hindsight or Monday morning quarterbacking, last summer had a couple of titles move out of late summer and you had a couple of titles that underperformed and then all of a sudden you had some of the trades, which should have known better, writing the death of the industry and that was just never going to be the case," he said. "We did exactly that in the summer of 2018, it's just the perfect example of trying to reach every audience and have something for everybody. Different genres available to the audience can pay off extraordinarily well."But will the Wall Street forcasts come to fruition the rest of the year? Titles like "Venom," "Aquaman," and "Mary Poppins Returns" are the big moneymakers on paper. "It." There's no major title like that slated for September."But there's a lot still on the way," he added. "The Oscar season films could break out, especially the ones that are topical. We must actually make that difference."So he headed south to Parkland, Florida, Friday to meet with victims and first responders, whom he effusively praised."Incredible job, and everybody is talking about it," Trump said of the response as he was surrounded by dozens of officers at the Broward County Sheriff's Office.He called the officers' response time an "incredible thing" and suggested that the law enforcement agents who responded to the shooting deserve a raise. In another exchange, Michael Leonard, the officer who located Cruz and handcuffed him, spent roughly 15 seconds explaining how he and his team apprehended the shooter.Trump joked that, if he caught the shooter, he would have taken much more credit."That was so modest. I would have told it much differently," Trump said. "I would have said without me, they never would have found him."Trump posted photos on his Instagram account from his visit to the hospital, where he met with shooting victims, their families, and medical staff.Some thought the light-hearted mood was inappropriate for a presidential follow-up on one of the deadliest school shootings in US history.Others, including some Trump supporters, took issue with criticism, pointing to family members who smiled in one photo.<h2>'They are laughing their asses off in Moscow'</h2>In a press conference announcing the special counsel Robert Mueller's indictments against 13 Russian individuals, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said there was "no allegation in the indictment" that an American knowingly participated in the alleged crimes.That sentence led Trump to claim vindication in the whole affair. The indictments, however, did not touch on the election-related hacking, such as when the Democratic National Committee and Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta had their emails stolen and leaked through channels like WikiLeaks.On Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, Trump dug in on the Russia news - offering up one of his lengthiest tweetstorms in months.The president suggested Saturday that the indictments proved he or his campaign couldn't have been involved in a Russian effort to meddle in an election because the effort began in 2014, which was at least six months before he would announce his bid for the presidency in June 2015."Funny how the Fake News Media doesn't want to say that the Russian group was formed in 2014, long before my run for President," <a href="https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/964949269374529538" target="_blank" rel="noopener">he wrote</a>. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, and Green Party nominee Jill Stein.In response, Trump's national security adviser H.R. McMaster <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/02/17/586803847/mcmaster-says-evidence-of-russia-meddling-incontrovertible" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> evidence Russia interfered in the election was "incontrovertible."That led Trump to scold his top adviser. Get back to the basics and make us all proud!"Not only does the FBI have more than 35,000 employees and run hundreds of investigations simultaneously, but the special counsel's investigation is being run outside of the main Justice Department. Promoting the theory runs in line with Trump's repeated allegation that leaders within the DOJ and FBI hold anti-Trump biases.Continuing the tweetstorm Sunday morning, Trump responded to an interview from Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee. Schiff said the Obama administration should have acted more forcefully in responding to alleged Russian election interference when first made aware of the intelligence community's assessment prior to the November 2016 vote."Finally, Liddle' Adam B.
