Bhopal, The <keyword id="21082883" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="scindias" source="keywords">Scindias</keyword>, the influential members of the erstwhile royal family of Gwalior, have moved effortlessly between different political parties when it comes to fighting electoral battles on their home turf and Union minister Jyotiraditya <keyword id="19905342" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="scindia" source="keywords">Scindia</keyword> will carry forward this tradition when he files his nomination as the BJP candidate from the Guna <keyword id="19895394" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha" source="keywords">Lok Sabha</keyword> seat in Madhya Pradesh. Five years after losing unexpectedly from Guna as the Congress candidate, Jyotiraditya Scindia, representing the current generation of the family in MP's politics, is back in the fray in his backyard, but this time as the nominee of his erstwhile political rival and with a different election symbol against his name on the EVM. The 53-year-old politician is the grandson of one of the BJP founders, Vijaya Raje Scindia, and son of former Union minister the late Madhavrao Scindia. The Guna Lok Sabha seat, part of the Scindias' home turf which also includes Gwalior, is spread across eight assembly seats in Guna, Shivpuri and Ashok Nagar districts. The Congress, looking to settle scores with Jyotiraditya Scindia in the poll fray after it lost its government in Madhya Pradesh following his exit exactly four years ago, is yet to name its candidate from Guna. It was a rare electoral shock for former Gwalior royals when the Union Minister for Civil Aviation faced defeat in 2019 at the hands of the BJP candidate and his old loyalist, KP Yadav, by a margin of around 1.26 Lakh votes. In 2024, Scindia is again testing electoral waters, but under the banner of a different party - the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) - the political home to his parental aunts - former Rajasthan Chief Minister <keyword id="21082885" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vasundhara-raje-scindia" source="keywords">Vasundhara Raje Scindia</keyword> and ex-MP minister <keyword id="21082884" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="yashodhara-raje" source="keywords">Yashodhara Raje</keyword>. But the Guna Lok Sabha constituency's history suggested the Scindias have never fought their first and last elections from the same party. The Union minister's grandmother, <keyword id="21082886" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rajmata-vijaya-raje-scindia" source="keywords">Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia</keyword>, contested her first election from the seat in 1957 on a Congress ticket and won. She contested as the Swatantra Party nominee in 1967 then from the BJP in 1989. His father Madhavrao Scindia contested his first election from Guna on a Bharatiya Jan Sangh (BJS) ticket in 1971 and fought his last poll in 1999 as the Congress nominee before his death in a plane crash near New Delhi in 2001. The BJS is considered the forerunner of the BJP. Senior journalist, author and political analyst <keyword id="20445085" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rasheed-kidwai" source="keywords">Rasheed Kidwai</keyword> says the Scindias' political leanings seem to be settling down now. "After decades of consciously choosing divergent political parties, the house of Scindias is finally settling down as per their past and ideological leanings. The Sangh, Hindutva and right-wing has always been Scindia flavour in the monarchical era," Kidwai noted. The Guna parliamentary seat was represented by Rajmata Scindia for 6 times, while her son Madhavrao Scindia won it on four occasions. Besides Guna, Rajmata Scindia represented the Gwalior Lok Sabha seat, part of the family turf, once. Madhavrao Scindia was elected five times from Gwalior, once as the candidate of the Madhya Pradesh Vikas Congress, an outfit floated by him. Rajmata Scindia's daughter Yashodhara Raje also represented the Gwalior seat in the Lok Sabha twice for the BJP. Jyotiraditya Scindia has represented the Guna seat four times between 2002 and 2014, including after winning in a bypoll. A year after his defeat, he joined the BJP in March 2020 along with 22 Congress MLAs, leading to the collapse of the Kamal Nath-led government in Madhya Pradesh. The defeat of Jyotiraditya Scindia in 2019 was the second setback for the Scindias in the Lok Sabha elections. In 1984, the Union minister's aunt and former Rajasthan CM <keyword id="20004780" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vasundhara-raje" source="keywords">Vasundhara Raje</keyword> had faced defeat as the BJP candidate from the Bhind Lok Sabha seat. She was defeated by Congress candidate <keyword id="21082887" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="krishna-singh-judeo" source="keywords">Krishna Singh Judeo</keyword>, who belongs to the erstwhile royal family of Datia. The Guna Lok Sabha constituency has more than 18.80 lakh voters and it will go to polls in the third phase on May 7.

 Scindia who hails from a family of royals is not a stranger to riches. He owns properties worth ₹297 crore — including the ancestral Jai Vilas Mahal in Gwalior and duplex in Samudra Mahal, Mumbai. The Jai Vilas Palace, which was built by the last maharaja of <keyword id="4447396" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="gwalior-jivajirao-scindia">Gwalior Jivajirao Scindia</keyword> spans across 40 acres. The mahal has over 400 rooms and a museum wing as well.

 Built in 1874, the palace was valued at ₹1 crore back then — and costs over ₹4,000 crore today. The mahal has a dining room fitted with a train track on the table, which serves brandy and cigars in a silver train. In fact, the Darbar Hall, which is the main attraction of the Palace, has two chandeliers weighing 3,500 kgs each — making it the largest in the world.

BJP's Jyotiraditya Scindia’s palaces, museums and posh complexes have a royal history

A day after quitting the Congress, <keyword id="29632" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jyotiraditya-Scindia">Jyotiraditya Scindia</keyword> will join the <keyword id="14666" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> at the party headquarters here on Wednesday. The former Congress MP and Union Minister will join the BJP at 12.30 p.m. at the BJP headquarters in the presence of BJP National President J.P. Nadda. On Tuesday, Scindia met former BJP President <keyword id="6355521" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="amit-shah">Amit Shah</keyword>. The two later met Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> at his residence. Following that meeting, Scindia released the letter to Congress President <keyword id="689" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sonia-Gandhi">Sonia Gandhi</keyword> where he announced his exit. The resignation letter is dated March 9 (Monday).

Union Minister of Communication Jyotiraditya Scindia held the second round of meetings with the Stakeholders Advisory Committees (SACs) on Satellite Communication and Internet Service Providers &amp; Infrastructure Providers, said the <keyword id="20510599" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Communication" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Ministry of Communication" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Ministry of Communication">Ministry of Communication</keyword> on Friday. The ministry stated that discussions in the meeting revolved around current regulatory provisions and the seamless adoption and facilitation of the <keyword id="22125599" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="right-of-way" source="keywords">Right of Way</keyword> (RoW) for a digitally connected India. This initiative is critical in engaging industry leaders in expanding and shaping the future of India's <keyword id="22639384" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="telecommunications-ecosystem" source="keywords">telecommunications ecosystem</keyword>. "Department of Telecommunications (DoT) under the leadership of Minister of Communications and Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia along with Dr Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, Minister of State for Communications, started the second round of meetings with the recently constituted SACs, and met with SACs on Satellite Communication and Internet Service Providers &amp; Infrastructure Providers," said Ministry of Communications. The ministry added that the committee commended the recent progress in RoW processes but emphasized the ongoing need for integrated governance and enhanced cooperation from state governments and local municipal bodies. The Secretary (Telecom) also assured that the new rules under the New Telecom Act are designed to address many of the issues raised in the meeting. The Minister also encouraged industry stakeholders to actively participate by providing their feedback on the RoW rules. The Advisory Committee on Satellite Communication presented their views on Indian space policy, spectrum allocation, and SUC and suggested various measures for advancing India's position as a global hub for satellite communication. The committee also commended the Ministry for including key provisions in the New Telecom Act, which are set to modernize India's telecommunications framework by enabling more flexible, liberalized, and technologically neutral spectrum utilization. These changes will greatly benefit the advancement and efficiency of satellite communication services. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, to facilitate a consistent two-way dialogue with the government on matters related to the telecommunications sector, constituted six distinct SACs to provide valuable insights to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on various matters. The six advisory committees include members such as top CEOs, academicians, researchers, entrepreneurs, and industry thought leaders from the following sectors: Telecom Service Providers, Internet Service Providers &amp; Infrastructure Providers, Telecom Sector Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Telecom Electronics Ecosystem, Satellite Communication Ecosystem, and Academicians and R &amp; D in the Telecommunications sector. Telecom minister holds meeting with stakeholders on right of way for satellite communications

Twenty eight ministers have been sworn in at a ceremony at the Raj Bhavan in Bhopal on Thursday morning. Governor Anandiben Patel administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new ministers. Out of 28 ministers 20 are cabinet and 8 are state ministers. Those who have been sworn in include Gopal Bhargava, Vijay Shah, Jagdish Deora, Bisahu Lal Singh, Yashodhara Raje Scindia, Bhupendra Singh, Edal Singh Kansana, Brijendra Pratap Singh, Vishwas Sarang, Imrati Devi, Prabhuram Chaudhary, Mahendra Singh Sisodia, Pradyuman Singh Tomar, Prem Singh Patel, Om Prakash Saklecha, Usha Thakur, Arvind Bhadoria, Mohan Yadav, Hardeep Singh Dung, Rajyavardhan Singh Dittigaon were sworn in. Those present on the occasion include Chief Minister <keyword id="67701" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shivraj-Singh-Chauhan">Shivraj Singh Chauhan</keyword>, Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, former Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, BJP State President Vishnu Dutt Sharma among others. Now the total number of ministers has increased to 33 with 28 members taking oath in the state cabinet. The State ministers who were sworn in include Bharat Singh Kushwaha, Inder Singh Parmar, Ramkhilavan Patel, Ram Kishor Kanvera, Brijendra Singh Yadav, Girraj Dandotia, Suresh Dhakad and O.P.S. Bhadoria. Out of the 28 ministers who were sworn in, 11 are Scindia loyalists who joined the BJP along with Jyotiraditya Scindia in March. The cabinet expansion has been pending since March. The Shivraj government has been functioning with only five ministers since mid-April.

The number of domestic air passengers in India is expected to double to about 300 million annually by 2030 and the country would still have a vast untapped market, Union Civil Aviation Minister <keyword id="19999763" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="jyotiraditya-scindia" source="keywords">Jyotiraditya Scindia</keyword> said on Thursday. Speaking at the inaugural session of Wings India 2024, a civil aviation conclave and exhibition here, <keyword id="19905342" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="scindia" source="keywords">Scindia</keyword> said India under the leadership of Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword> in the last decade, has been a "shining star" on the global firmament of civil aviation. He said the number of airports and waterdromes will go up to over 200 from the existing 149 in the country. With 300 million passengers a year in 2030, India's aviation penetration would be at 10-15% and still be a potential market in the decades to come. "That is the potential that India holds not only to herself and Asia, but to the world. ...even with achieving 300 million domestic passengers by 2030, we will still be one of the most under-penetrated markets across the top 20 in the world. Today our penetration is roughly about 3 to 4% that will grow to about 10 to 15%. We still have 85% penetration to go," he said. He noted that the domestic air passenger traffic witnessed 15% growth (CAGR) while international air passenger traffic was 6.1%, in the last decade. According to Scindia, India today is the third largest domestic civil aviation market in the world and the seventh largest international civil aviation market in the world. If both domestic and international are combined, then India is the fifth largest civil aviation market in the world. In the last 15 years, domestic and international cargo witnessed a growth of 60 and 53% respectively. "Our domestic cargo traffic over the last 15 years has grown by close to 60% and our international cargo traffic, by close to 53%. And it is our considered opinion and that of industry consultants that domestic traffic which was 153 million in the last calendar year, up from 60 million in 2014, will grow to 300 million by 2030," he said. On the fleet size in the country, Scindia said it has grown from 400 to over 700. "Today, India has become the largest purchaser of aircraft in the world after the US and China. Our fleet size is going to grow from 713 to upwards of 2,000 in the next decade." Observing that 74 airports were built in 65 years, he said the government has modernized and built an additional 75 airports, waterdromes and heliports in the last 10 years. "It is our target, that by 2030, we will take that number from 149 to upwards of 200 airports, waterports and heliports in our country," he said. Scindia also marked the occasion by launching the Udan 5.3 scheme. "This regional connectivity scheme has truly transformed the arena and our sector... today under Udan, infrastructure has been built at 76 airports, waterdromes and heliports. Close to 517 new routes have been operationalised that could not have been dreamt of in the past," he said. As per the latest figures available from the Election Commission, the BJP was leading in 160 of the 230 seats in Madhya Pradesh, while the Congress was ahead in 67 seats. Speaking to ANI, the minister also credited incumbent chief minister Shivraj for the results showing a comfortable lead for the party in the polls. As the counting of votes continues, the BJP has taken a comfortable lead in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, while also aiming to capture Chhattisgarh from Congress. Meanwhile, in Telangana, the Congress is poised to oust the K Chandrasekhar Rao-led BRS government to wrest power in another southern state. The election to the 230-member Madhya Pradesh Assembly was a fight between the BJP and the Congress, whose then 15- month government, formed in the year 2018 was toppled from power in 2020 with help from Jyotiraditya Scindia who defected to the BJP from the Congress. The BJP though had fielded three central ministers Narendra Singh Tomar, Prahlad Singh Patel and Faggan Singh Kulaste to tackle the perceived anti-incumbency against Chouhan. Chouhan relied heavily on schemes for women like the '<keyword id="16283999" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ladli-behna-yojana" source="Orion">Ladli Behna Yojana</keyword>' under which Rs 1250 are being transferred monthly to eligible women from poor families in the state. Congress has described it as an election sop, implemented months before the assembly polls, the BJP leaders have said that it is in line with the party's work for empowering women. State Congress president and candidate from Chhindwara, Kamal Nath leading by a margin of 15,623 votes after the ninth round of counting, garnering a total of 57895 votes so far. According to the Election Commission, Yadav has a 53.59% vote share whereas Scindia has a 40.44% vote share. Guna has been the homeground for Scindia as his family has been winning elections from the seat for 30 years. Scindia, who belongs to the royal family of Gwalior, himself has won the seat 4 times and has been in power since 2002. The senior Congress leader was also considered to be a contender for the <keyword id="6355553" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="MP">MP</keyword> Chief Minister’s post. With Scindia’s appointment as the All India Congress Committee general secretary in-charge for western Uttar Pradesh, his wife Priyadarshini Scindia was leading the election campaign for Scindia. Meanwhile, Yadav was a close confidante of Scindia, who had gone to join the BJP and is contesting for the first time from Guna. Yadav had left the Congress after a fallout for the party for having not got a seat during the assembly elections.
