He had previously stepped away from the dating app in November 2014. </p><p>Chris Payne, who had been serving CEO, only lasted five months at the position. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chris-payne-replaces-sean-rad-as-tinder-ceo-2015-3">He was hired in March 2015</a> to lead Tinder. </p><p>In an interview with board member and Benchmark partner Matt Cohler, Swisher reported for Re/Code that it wasn't going to be a "long-term fit". </p><p>"<span>It's only been a few months, but everyone came to the realization, the board and Christopher, and all agreed it wouldn't work out long term," <a href="http://recode.net/2015/08/12/tinder-founder-sean-rad-returns-as-ceo-replacing-chris-payne/">Cohler told Re/Code</a>. Tinder brings back founder Sean Rad as CEO

<p>It works a lot like Hot or Not, allowing users to quickly judge each others' looks based on profile pictures. If both people find each other attractive, Tinder allows them to "match," then message back and forth to schedule a date.</p>
<p>The Los Angeles-based startup was founded by four entrepreneurs Sean Rad, Justin Mateen, Jonathan B<span>adeen, and Christopher Gulczynski, and it is backed by IAC, the parent company of Match and OKCupid.</span></p>
<p><span>In February Tinder was generating 10 million matches per day.</span></p>

Tinder has a new CEO

It was also the first tech investment by <a href="https://instagram.com/fuckjerry/">Instagram comedy stars</a> Elie Ballas and Elliot Tebele.</span></p><p><span>Now, the company has stopped working on the app and shut it down.</span></p><p>But the Wigo team, led by its 23-year-old charismatic cofounder Ben Kaplan, has landed on its feet.</p><p>They are joining the other college app taking campuses by storm, <a href="http://theyetiapp.com/">Yeti Campus Stories</a>, Kaplan tells Business Insider. </p><p>Yeti is six months old and known as an <a href="http://www.dailydot.com/lifestyle/yeti-snapchat-clone-college-party-photos/">"X-rated Snapchat clone"</a> where the kind of sexual and violent content banned on Snapchat is A-OK. It insists that its users be at least 17 years old and <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/yeti-campus-stories/id953297702?mt=8">warns</a> of mild profanity, violence, alcohol and drug use, and "<span>Frequent/Intense Mature/Suggestive Themes."</span></p><p><span>Both Wigo and Yeti were building social networks at specific schools. Whereas Wigo focused on helping friends plan their social time, while also documenting it, Yeti focuses on sharing snaps of those fun times, and helps college kids find the party, too. </span></p><p><span>"Yeti is like a Snapchat story on every campus, but it's completely moderated by the students who go there, not by us. Because of this, Yeti shows what it's really like to attend that school, showing a side of the student body not seen anywhere else," Kaplan tells us, adding that because it was growing faster than Wigo when the teams joined up, the Wigo app was ditched.</span></p><p><span>For the past two weeks, Yeti has been the fastest-growing social networking app on the iTunes store, <a href="https://www.appannie.com/apps/ios/app/yeti-campus-stories/">according to App Annie.</a></span></p><p><span>We understand that Yeti's growth is attracting the attention of VCs, and the young company is trying to raise funds at a shockingly high valuation. After building a $14 million company in 13 months, college party app Wigo is dead

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55390577ecad048a232d5fe2-1200-667/tinder%20swiping.png" border="0" alt="tinder swiping"><p class="source"><span>YouTube</span></p><p class="caption">You never know what's going to happen after you swipe right. </p></img></div><p></p></div></div>When it comes to online dating, everybody wants to find someone with whom they have a lot in common - as long as those commonalities don't include having the same parents.<p>But this is exactly what happened to Erik de Vries, 24, and Josephine Egberts, 22, according to Mic.</p><p>The long lost siblings reconnected after matching on Tinder and flirting for a few days before they figured out the truth.</p><p>The Dutch online daters have a story straight out of "The Parent Trap" - which is funny, because something similar happened to the star of that movie, Lindsay Lohan, when she <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2451633/Lindsay-Lohan-outs-brother-Michael-Tinder.html">discovered her own brother on Tinder in 2013</a>.</p><div><div><iframe src="//instagram.com/p/fRG3jUpcwk/embed/" width="658" height="" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" allowtransparency="true"></iframe></div></div><p class="embed-spacer"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Thankfully, Lohan recognized him as kin before any saucy texts were exchanged.</span></p><p>Egbert and de Vries didn't catch on that quickly, though.</p><p>The backstory: their parents divorced in 1999 and, instead of sharing custody of both kids, they divvied up their offspring, Mic reports. De Vries and his twin brother moved to Belgium with Dad, while Josephine stayed in the Netherlands with their mom.</p><p>When they came of age and de Vries moved back to the Netherlands for school, he and his sister saw each other on Tinder.</p><p>"The first time I swiped her profile I had absolutely no idea," <a href="http://mic.com/articles/116094/these-long-lost-siblings-amazingly-reunited-over-tinder">de Vries told&#xa0;<em>Mic</em></a>. "To be honest, it hasn't been on my mind in the past few years after Maarten, my brother, and I finished a failed search for Josephine a few years ago."</p><p>Like any red-blooded Dutch male, de Vries started flirting with his cute new Tinder match. But then:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>Curiosity eventually got the best of him, so he confronted his Tinder match about her full identity. The two exchanged stories about their pasts - parents with a rocky divorce, long&#xa0;lost siblings - and soon realized: They were brother and sister.</span></p><p>After meeting up about a week later, they were brought together once more in a reunion of all three siblings by <a href="http://www.datingsitekiezen.nl/nieuws/broer-en-zus-na-jaren-herenigd-dankzij-tinder">the Dutch website Datingsite Kiezen</a>.</p><p>As for this new Tinder use case - reconnecting with lost family members - Tinder cofounder and CMO Justin Mateen is likely not surprised. He has insisted from the outset that the app is for making every kind of connection.</p><p>"The vision is more about social discovery than just dating," he <a href="http://observer.com/2014/01/tinder-is-the-night-high-speed-digital-app-gets-you-more-ass-than-the-l-train/">said in a 2014 interview</a>&#xa0;with the Observer. A guy and a girl matched up on Tinder - later, they found out they were long-lost siblings

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/571792f152bcd028008bdc44-2571-1929/gettyimages-498035418.jpg" alt="sean rad" data-mce-source="Andrew Burton/Getty Images" data-mce-caption="Tinder CEO Sean Rad." /><p class="source"><span>Andrew Burton/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Tinder CEO Sean Rad.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Tinder CEO Sean Rad opened up on Wednesday about being fired from the CEO role at the company he cofounded.</p><p>His demotion in November 2014, to president reportedly came after <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/stevenbertoni/2014/11/04/exclusive-sean-rad-out-as-tinder-ceo-inside-the-crazy-saga/4/#5d5a44c95a0a">Tinder parent company IAC was looking for a more experienced "Eric Schmidt-like person" as the company's next CEO</a>.</p><p>It also came in the wake of a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by Tinder's ousted cofounder Whitney Wolfe, who accused Rad, as well as cofounder Justin Mateen, of sexually harassing her. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/whitney-wolfe-settles-tinder-sexual-harassment-suit-2014-9">The suit was settled in September 2014, without admission of wrongdoing.</a></p><p>Speaking on stage at <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">Advertising</keyword> Week Europe in London on Wednesday, Rad - who returned as Tinder CEO in August last year - said his removal from the CEO role was a "surprise" as the company was doing well and growing fast.</p><p>But he said the board had fears that Rad, at that time aged just 28, would be able to manage that growth.</p><p>"Frankly, I had fears: I didn't know I could manage this growth," Rad said.</p><p>But Rad gives the impression he's not bitter about his demotion any more. He says it gave him the opportunity to "pause."</p><p>"In hindsight, being fired is one of the best things that ever happened to me," Rad said.</p><h2>Rad on leadership</h2><p>He added: "I was able to take a step back and really embrace the things that I was good at and then kind of admit and recognize the things I wasn't good at. And in that, recognizing that being a leader doesn't mean you're good at everything, it means the opposite. Being a great CEO means you have the ability to chart a course, find a destination, recruit a team that each have their strengths and weaknesses, but in concert can reach that destination."</p><p>And regardless of how the board felt about Rad in the top job, he felt he couldn't leave the company.</p><p>"I stayed because I believe in Tinder and I want to contribute in any way. If the best way to contribute is to mop the floors, I would. It's really about helping building this platform. That's our job," he said.</p><p>Rad now said he's back and feeling "more ready than ever."</p><p>"I think there was a relief, a little bit, when they asked me to come back. Naturally I had all these ideas, I had problems I want to solve, and when you're in a different position it's harder to have your input because you don't want to step on other people's toes," Rad added.</p><h2>Why Tinder offered a woman thrown out of her sorority a scholarship and an internship</h2><p>Tinder was in the press this week after it offered a woman a scholarship and internship after she was allegedly kicked out of her University of Nebraska sorority over a photo she posted to the app. The sorority deemed the picture in violation of its "human dignity" rule, <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2016/04/19/tinder-hands-woman-scholarship-after-sorority-kicks-her-out/">The Daily Telegraph reported.</a></p><p>Rad said there were two reasons why Tinder offered the internship and to pay for the rest of her college fees.</p><p>"She was so articulate when it came to describing what Tinder is. She really understood it. I was shocked. I was like wow. Tinder CEO Sean Rad: 'Being fired is one of the best things that ever happened to me'

<p>A "normal" person at Business Insider told us about it, and said all of her roommates and college-age friends use it. A few have found dates on it.</p>
<p>(By "normal," we mean someone who isn't gadget obsessed, and isn't an early tech adopter.)</p>
<p>What is Tinder?</p>
<p>It's more or less a socially acceptable, mobile version of Hot or Not. If you saw The Social Network, you might remember "Face Mash," the product Mark Zuckerberg made before Facebook. It takes people's photos and lets other people quickly say if they find the person attractive or unattractive.</p>
<p>But Tinder is Hot or Not or Face Mash with a purpose. Instead of rating people for cruel amusement, it helps you find single people you're attracted to in your area.</p>
<p>If you're attracted to them, and they're attracted to you, both parties are notified. If one of you is attracted and the other isn't, neither is notified. And of course, if both parties don't' find each other attractive, they both go on their ways, never knowing what the other thinks.</p>
<p>Tinder was founded by four entrepreneurs <span>Sean Rad, Justin Mateen, Jonathan Badeen, and Christopher Gulczynski, and it is backed by IAC, the parent company of Match and OKCupid. It recently launched on a few college campuses and it seems to be making the rounds. According to TechCrunch, <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2013/01/03/tinder-finding-traction-on-campuses-hatch-labs-new-dating-app-makes-it-easy-to-break-the-ice/">more than 35 million profiles have been rated</a> on the app and one million matches have been made in less than two months. </span></p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/550974e5dd0895c0558b4611-1031-773/dick-costolo-103-5.jpg" border="0" alt="dick costolo 103"><p class="source"><span>Ethan Miller/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Twitter CEO Dick Costolo.</p></img></div><p></p></div></div>In the latest accusation of sexism to hit a high-profile Silicon Valley tech company, a former Twitter employee is launching a class action lawsuit against her ex-employee, <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/03/20/lawsuit-twitter-discrimination-idUSL2N0WM1PL20150320">Reuters reports, alleging the company's promotional system is sexually discriminatory</a>.</p><p>Over the past several weeks, news of interim Reddit CEO Ellen Pao's lawsuit against venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield &amp; Byers has <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/what-we-learned-in-the-ellen-pao-gender-discrimination-trial-this-week-2015-3">made frequent headlines in the tech press</a>. A judge has ruled that there's "sufficient evidence from which a reasonable juror could conclude that Kleiner Perkins engaged in intentional gender discrimination," <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/ellen-pao-can-sue-kleiner-perkins-for-damages-2015-3">and is now allowing Pao to pursue punitive damages</a>.</p><p>Facebook is in the legal firing line too: <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/a-former-facebook-employee-is-suing-her-former-employer-for-discrimination-2015-3">Former employee Chia Hong is suing the company</a> (using Pao's lawyers!), alleging sex discrimination, sexual harassment, and racial discrimination. Her lawyers allege she was finally fired and replaced "by a less qualified, less experienced male."</p><p>Dating app Tinder is another one. <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/tinder-co-founder-whitney-wolfe-and-bumble-2015-1">One of its female co-founders was awarded more than $1 million in damages after being forced to leave the company</a>, saying that her coworker and ex-boyfriend Justin Mateen was verbally abusive towards her.</p><p><a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/kelly-ellis-claims-she-was-sexually-harassed-at-google-2015-3">And an ex-Google employee claimed earlier this month that she was repeatedly sexually harassed by her superiors while working at the company</a>, explicitly naming two senior Google employees as being complicit in the harassment. (She isn't planning to sue Google, however.)</p><p>Now, engineer Tina Huang is accusing microblogging platform Twitter of discriminating against women in the way it promotes employees internally. <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/03/20/lawsuit-twitter-discrimination-idUSL2N0WM1PL20150320">According to Reuters, Huang alleges the company</a> "has no formal procedures for posting job openings or granting promotions, relying instead on a secretive 'shoulder tap' process that elevates few women to top engineering positions."</p><p>Huang, <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=12948239&amp;authType=NAME_SEARCH&amp;authToken=hy7w&amp;locale=en_US&amp;srchid=329220801427039204817&amp;srchindex=1&amp;srchtotal=1&amp;trk=vsrp_people_res_photo&amp;trkInfo=VSRPsearchId%3A329220801427039204817%2CVSRPtargetId%3A12948239%2CVSRPcmpt%3Aprimary%2CVSRPnm%3A">who worked for Twitter between 2009 and 2014</a>, complained to CEO Dick Costolo and was subsequently put on leave. <a href="http://mashable.com/2015/03/20/twitter-sex-discrimination-lawsuit/">Court documents say that</a> "despite being one of Twitter's oldest employees, Ms. Huang's career at Twitter was irreparably derailed for making a complaint. After three months without explanation as to the status of the investigation, or mention of any possible time frame for her return to work, she felt she had no choice but to leave the company for the sake of her career."</p><p><a href="http://mashable.com/2015/03/20/twitter-sex-discrimination-lawsuit/">Mashable reports that Huang's lawyers have provided a 10-point list detailing how</a> "Twitter's policies and practises have thus had the effect of denying equal job opportunities to qualified women":</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">a. Reliance upon subjective, gender-based and/or arbitrary criteria utilised by a nearly all male managerial workforce in making promotion decisions;</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">b. Failure to follow a uniform job posting procedure to guarantee that all employees have notice of openings;</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">c. Effectively discouraging women from seeking or applying for senior level and leadership positions;</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">d. Failing and refusing to consider women for promotion on the same basis as men are considered;</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">e. Failing and refusing to promote women on the same basis as men are promoted and compensated;</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">f. Failing to provide women with accurate and timely notice of promotional opportunities;</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">g. Providing women employees interested in promotion shifting, inconsistent and inaccurate statements about the requirements and qualifications necessary for promotion;</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">h. Establishing and maintaining arbitrary and subjective requirements for promotions which have the effect of excluding qualified women and which have not been shown to have any significant relationship to job performance or to be necessary to the safe and efficient conduct of Twitter's business;</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">i. Failing and refusing to take adequate steps to eliminate the effects of its past discriminatory practises; and,</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">j. Retaliating against women employees who complain of unequal treatment.</p><p>Twitter's workforce is overwhelmingly male, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-workplace-diversity-numbers-2014-7">according to statistics put out by the company in 2014</a>. Just 30% of employees are women - and in tech-related jobs, that number drops to just 10%.</p><p>Business Insider has reached out to Twitter for comment, and will update when it responds. <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2015/03/22/twitter-gender-discrimination-lawsuit/">The company provided TechCrunch with the following statement about Huang leaving the company</a>:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Ms. Huang resigned voluntarily from Twitter, after our leadership tried to persuade her to stay. She was not fired. Twitter is the latest Silicon Valley company to be sued over gender discrimination allegations

He got the name<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> <a href="http://www.v--studios.com/v-studios/2014/10/1/au4zqzoyear0vbxyndnsiksmj630wq">while watching Seinfeld</a></span>.</p><p>About a year ago, he hit 100,000 followers on Instagram and things ballooned from there.</p><p>He now has 4.5 million Instagram followers and 12 million followers across all channels (Tumblr, Twitter, Snapchat, and so on). Tebele's fame has grown so big, he recently took on a partner, his childhood friend Ballas, both 24.</p><p>Although Tebele didn't go to college, his buddy Ballas joined his friend after graduating from Stanford with a degree in human/computer interaction (aka "Symbolic Systems"). Not only do their first names sound alike - "Elie" is pronounced like "Ellie" (think "Elliot" without the "t") - they also look alike, and they clearly have the same sense of humor.</p><p>Both of them work full-time collecting the humor posts and memes that have made their feeds so popular.</p><p>And together have a vision for turning F--kJerry into a bigger comedic empire including launching a line of clothing with a "comedic edge to it, while being tasteful," Tebele told us.</p><p>Until now, they've been making their living from advertising via sponsored posts, "when we believe in the company or products. And the spot has to be hilarious. We can't sacrifice content to promotion," Ballas says.</p><p>And they say they haven't quite become gazillionaires yet.</p><p>"We're making a living off of it. We pay rent. We eat. We drink," they say.</p><p>Could they buy a Porsche? "Maybe a cheap Porsche or maybe not even a cheap Porsche," they joked.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5432b8c26bb3f73c3dd2a562-1020-610/screen shot 2014-10-06 at 11.43.16 am.png" alt="instagram fuckjerry" border="0"><p class="source"><span>Instagram/Screenshot</span></p><p class="caption">Just one of thousands of images Tebele has aggregated and posted to Instagram.</p></img></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Word is that the team charges <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/NicoleFiala/team307pizzahutplansbook">up to $30,000 to companies</a> for a sponsored post campaign.</p><p><span>Plus, they are producing original comedy videos which will be </span><a href="http://www.funnyordie.com/fuckjerry">hosted on Funny or Die.</a><span> And they've made their first investment in a tech startup, Wigo.</span></p><h2><strong>Hooking up with the party app</strong></h2><p>The pair met Wigo when Ben Kaplan, the co-founder of Wigo, contacted them about marketing.</p><p>"All six of us full-time Wigo employers are huge fans of the account. We followed it and we reached out see if they would reply," Kaplan told us.</p><p>To his surprise, they did, and instead of a sponsored post arrangement, they decided on more of a partnership.</p><p>That includes a small equity investment by the comedians into Wigo (they wouldn't disclose the actual dollar amount). First, they had to get hundreds to thousands of their schoolmates to sign up on a waiting list.</p><p>Only then would Wigo "unlock" the app at their school.</p><p>Kaplan originally built the app in his dorm room to help him find his own friends at parties and bars.</p><p>When the app took off, he dropped out of college to work on it full-time, landing a total of $2 million investment from investors like Paul English, founder of Kayak; Kevin Colleran, Facebook's first sales guy; Tinder cofounders Sean Rad and Justin Mateen; and other famous names, such as Vince Wilfork, Pro Bowl lineman for the Patriots.</p><p>Ironically, when Kaplan dropped out, "I essentially got kicked off my own app," he told us.</p><p>A version of the app, <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wigo-summer/id689401759?mt=8">Wigo Summer,</a> is now available to be used by anyone. Kaplan looks at it as a competitor to Meetup that acts like Tinder.</p><p>New features include geolocation - "like Tinder, anywhere you are, you can see people [on Wigo] around you," he says. (Users will be able to set privacy settings so that only their friends can see their location.)</p><p>You can also find events in your area (that's why the F--kJerry guys like it), post pics of the event and chat in the app.</p><p>"We  have startups hitting us up all the time," Tebele says, "and we plan on investing in more tech startups. But it's rare to find a startup that's aligned so very well with our goals like Wigo is."</p><p>Kaplan won't say how many total users Wigo has now. He tells us users are "growing by the thousands daily. The funniest guys on Instagram have joined the party app going crazy on colleges

But when he was 11 years old, he was boarding a 35-foot-long boat with his grandmother and older brother that would transport him from Vietnam to Indonesia, the first leg of a trip that would eventually take the three of them to America.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It was 1986. Tran, the son of two teachers, had been born just months before the end of the Vietnam War in 1975.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Instead of moving to America before the end of the war, Tran's parents had decided to stay put.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"My <span>dad's father, my grandfather, had studied abroad before, and his attitude was 'it's not easy being in a brand new country like that,'" Tran recalled.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span>So the family stayed in Vietnam. But Tran's brother, who was six years older than Tran, had ambitions to go to college. Tran's parents knew America would be a better place for their sons to receive an education than war-torn Vietnam. </span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span>Tran's parents and the two boys tried escaping the country several times, but something bad always happened that ended up quashing the trip: once, they were discovered by police; another time, they missed the boat that would have taken them out of Vietnam as refugees. One time, the family ended up in jail for 24 hours after being caught escaping, and were later only released when they bribed the police.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span><span>What actually led Tran to leave Vietnam was superstition. "The organizer said, 'Hey, you four people' - my parents, my brother and I - 'you four have bad zodiac signs together,'" Tran told Business Insider. "They're very superstitious, so they're like, 'The four of you don't go together, so you've only got three seats, just choose the three people who will go.'"</span></span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span>Tran's family came up with a plan: Tran, his brother, and his grandmother would go to California together, where Tran's uncle already lived. Tran's parents would stay behind and eventually join them.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span>In April 1986, Tran, his grandmother, and his older brother boarded the 35-foot-long fishing boat with about 130 other people. "W<span>e were packed like sardines on this boat," Tran told Business Insider. "I</span></span></span></span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span><span><span>t was gross," Tran recalls. "You know - people sitting, jam-packed and throwing up on each other."</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span><span><span>After a five-day, six-night trip, Tran's boat arrived in Indonesia, at a refugee camp. Tran remembers "surviving on some basic sustenance" for the first six months the family was there. Then, the paperwork process began: the family made contact with Tri's uncle, who lived in San Jose, California, and they started the process of applying for sponsorship.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span>"Six months is actually considered very quick, versus other people who stay on those islands for years," Tran says. They eventually boarded a plane that took them to San Francisco, where Tran's uncle was waiting for them. From Vietnam to America, the whole trip took about seven months.</span></p><p>Tran picked up his education in middle school, initially scraping by knowing just a few English words. "<span>I befriended a couple of other Vietnamese kids who knew more English than me, but could translate things for me," Tran says. "Sitting in the classroom was just - the teacher just spoke in English exclusively, so you're like 'uh huh, OK, whatever.'"</span></p><p><span>Eventually, Tran learned English. He and his brother graduated from high school, and both went to MIT. As soon as he graduated in the late 90s, Tran hopped on a plane and came back to Silicon Valley to work at then-hot corporate computing company <span style="font-weight: 400;">Silicon Graphics. </span></span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55c3f82b371d222e008bdba6-591-443/hillary-clinton-munchery.png" alt="hillary clinton munchery" data-mce-source="Rei-Link Duehlbohm via Instagram" /><p class="source"><span>Rei-Link Duehlbohm via Instagram</span></p><p class="caption">Hillary Clinton stopped by Munchery HQ during a Bay Area fundraising trip in August.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Meanwhile, Tran's parents were still in Vietnam, and they were communicating only via snail mail and through painstakingly coordinated phone calls. </span></p><p><span>"I<span style="font-weight: 400;">t was kind of odd hearing my mom's voice because I couldn't even recognize her voice the first time when I heard it. </span></span><span style="font-weight: 400;">I didn't know how miserable they were," Tran says. "When I finished college I actually managed to save up enough money to buy a plane ticket, to go back to Vietnam for the first time 11 years later, with my brother."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Tran and his brother sponsored their parents to come to the US. They made the move in 2000, settling down in the San Francisco Bay Area, near Tran.</span></p><p>Tran left Silicon Graphics and worked at startups for a while, and eventually helped found Munchery, a food delivery startup in 2010. <span>He was tasked with cooking for his family - himself, his wife and his two sons - and found himself constantly looking for an answer to the question: </span><span>"What's for dinner?"</span></p><p><span>Now, Munchery is a $300 million company that offers<span> both prepared meals and ready-to-assemble meal kits on-demand and scheduled. A startup founder left Vietnam for America on a fishing boat when he was 11 - now he runs a $300 million company

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/54eb853369bedd580185da71-745-559/wigo-team-1.png" border="0" alt="Wigo team"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.wigo.us/">Wigo</a></span></p><p class="caption">Left to right: Tyler Swartz, Giuliano Giacaglia (CTO/cofounder), Ben Kaplan (CEO/cofounder), Claire Uhar</p></img></div><p></p></div></div>Since September, an app called Wigo, the brainchild of 23-year-old college dropout Ben Kaplan, has become the hottest thing on college campuses.</p><p>Wigo helps college kids find out where their friends are going to meet up and party (or meet up and study, or meet up and do anything).</p><p>But the thing that's making kids go wild for this app is that they can't just download it and use it. They have to really, really want it, getting hundreds to thousands of their schoolmates to sign up on a waiting list. Only then will Wigo will "unlock" the app at their school.</p><p>"People say that Wigo is similar to YikYak, but the only thing we have in common with YikYak is that college students love using it. We like to think of it as LinkedIn for colleges. It takes the network effect," Kaplan told Business Insider.</p><p>Wigo even has what's known as school ambassadors, college kids that wrangle others to sign up for the app until the school hits the magic number to be unlocked - somewhere around 5% of the entire college population.</p><p>Making college kids wait has turned out to be pure genius. The app has only been widely available since September and it has been downloaded and requested at over 1,200 campuses, is in use at 73 schools and has over 100,000 active users.</p><p>Better still, the Wigo team just raised their first major round of venture funding, landing $1.4 million at a valuation of $14 million, Kaplan tells us.</p><p><a href="http://www.wigo.us/team">Its backers and advisors are a who's who </a>and include Paul English, founder of Kayak; Kevin Colleran, Facebook's first sales guy; Tinder cofounders Sean Rad and Justin Mateen; and other famous names, like Vince Wilfork, Pro-bowl lineman for the Patriots.</p><p>This is all happening even though the app has no revenue - it doesn't even have a business model yet. At some point, the team will work on that, perhaps via discounts and services from local businesses who'd like college students to come and party at their venue, Kaplan says.</p><h2>From idea to dropout entrepreneur</h2><p>Kaplan came up with the idea two years ago, when he was a freshman at a small school outside of Boston called Holy Cross. He noticed his friends spent an ungodly amount of time making party plans.</p><p>"All my friends were asking the same questions, every Thursday, Friday, Saturday night: who is having a party? Which bar are we going to meet up? It was a big cluster of frantic text messages, maybe some Facebook events that were kind of lame and outdated just to figure out, where are we going? Who is going out?"</p><p>He decided to build an app himself called Who Is Going Out (Wigo) for his school. The only problem was he's not a programmer. Still, he spent the summer designing the app, then borrowed money from his parents and hired a programmer.</p><p>"I launched it at my school. Within 3 weeks, half school using the app," he says. That was about 13 months ago in January 2014.</p><p>The local papers wrote about it and that led various people in the tech industry to reach out and offer advice. One of them worked for Kayak and introduced him to Paul English, who had just launched a new accelerator program.</p><p>"I had to make a decision. Either this goes onto my resume as a fun experience, or I take it to the next level. Paul had built Kayak into a $2 billion company and he was telling me, 'I see huge potential in what you are doing,'" Kaplan remembers.</p><p>That gave him the confidence to drop out of college and enter the accelerator.</p><p>English introduced him to his cofounder Giuliano Giacaglia, another wonder kid. At 21, Giacaglia had graduated from MIT with a masters's in artificial intelligence/robotics. He had already turned down jobs at Facebook and Microsoft after interning for both.</p><p>Once in the program, Wigo quickly raised about $500,000 in seed money. He reached out to Kaplan and Kaplan explained about the network effect.</p><p>Swartz became an "ambassador" for the app. He got his frat brothers and their friends to download it. Within 24-hours, they had hundreds of downloads and unlocked the school.</p><p>"They called me the Wigo kid," because he talked about the app so much, Swartz told us.</p><p>Kaplan made Swartz an intern and watched him bring in another 1,500 users in seven weeks, helping find ambassadors at other schools. When offered a job, Swarz dropped out of school to become the company's director of business development.</p><p>It was a similar story for Claire Uhar who also dropped out of the University of Maryland to help Wigo market the app.</p><p>All told, the company now employs five people between the age of 19 and their early 20s, four of whom dropped out of college to work there.</p><p>And it has a growing network of ambassadors such as Andrew Nelson, a freshman at the Gabelli School of Business at Fordham University.</p><p>"I heard about the app through one of my Facebook friends," Nelson told us and he called Wigo and asked to be an ambassador. Kaplan called him back and talked to him about his own startup ideas.</p><p>"It was amazing to know that there was another college kid out there with big ideas who wanted to change something and succeed. These 20-something college dropouts built a $14 million company in 13 months

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55b7ee892acae7c7018baba5-997-748/cyrus massoumi official headshot formal.jpg" alt="Cyrus Massoumi " data-mce-source="ZocDoc" /><p class="source"><span>ZocDoc</span></p><p class="caption">ZocDoc CEO Cyrus Massoumi</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In November 2014, a former ZocDoc employee <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/zocdoc-sexual-harassment-2014-11">said she would be filing a lawsuit against the company</a>.</p><p>The anonymous employee said the company, which lets you find and book doctor's appointments from your computer or mobile device, was a "frat house."</p><p>"There were things the men who worked there could get away with saying like 'you aren't bubbly enough,' 'you look hot today,' 'That secretary is a c---,' etc.," she said <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/zocdoc-sexual-harassment-2014-11">in an anonymous rant on Kinja </a>that is <a href="http://zocdoced.kinja.com/what-it-is-really-like-to-work-at-zocdoc-as-a-woman-vo-1656479263">no longer online</a>.</p><p>"It was just accepted."</p><p>In addition, the former employee claimed, men openly discussed their female colleagues' bodies, the company's upper management treated women differently from men, and the building had a rodent infestation.</p><p>ZocDoc, which was founded in 2007, is one of New York's biggest startups. Last year, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sc/interview-with-zocdoc-ceo-cyrus-massoumi-2014-6">reports said the company was seeking to raise $152 million at a $1.6 billion valuation,</a> adding to the<span> $97.9 million war chest it's amassed over the years. Its institutional investors include DST Global, Goldman Sachs, Khosla Ventures, Founders Fund, and SV Angel.</span></p><p><span>The former employee who said she would file a lawsuit against the company did not end up taking ZocDoc to court. </span></p><p><span>But since then, more than half a dozen other former and current employees have spoken with Business Insider to discuss their experiences at the company, which mirror the woman's original complaints about ZocDoc's company culture.</span> These former employees asked not to be named, citing non-disclosure agreements they signed while working for ZocDoc.  </p><p>Some of the issues they cited are typical in many sales departments and startup offices: employees work long hours, there's significant employee burnout and turnover, and the staff is dominated by immature-sounding men (in Silicon Valley, there's actually a term for this: "bro-grammers.").</p><p>Other issues seem ZocDoc-specific and troubling.</p><h2><strong>"A<span> catcall mentality throughout the office"</span></strong></h2><p>ZocDoc's headquarters occupies two floors of a building on Broadway in New York City's SoHo neighborhood. One floor houses the sales team; the other is for the company's other departments, like product and customer service.</p><p>Former employees tell Business Insider that the two floors are culturally segregated, and ZocDoc's problems are contained to its sales floor. ZocDoc's salespeople contact doctors to sign up for ZocDoc. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55c4c31e2acae711008be14c-1243-932/zocdoc-ios-app-4-search-results.jpg" alt="zocdoc app" data-mce-source="ZocDoc" /><p class="source"><span>ZocDoc</span></p><p class="caption">ZocDoc's iOS app</p></div><p></p></div></div><span></span>Several former employees told us about a "hookup culture" at ZocDoc, catalyzed in part by company happy hours.</p><p>"There would be a catcall mentality throughout the office," a former employee tells Business Insider. "It felt like a college party every day. There was no line between after-work party and work."</p><p>Another former employee describes ZocDoc's sales floor as a "meat market," and says that the majority of the sales floor's hires are good-looking people fresh out of school.</p><p>One former saleswoman says she was "lucky enough" to work for a female manager. </p><p>"She kind of understood that we needed someone who was able to give us training and look at us for our sales skills versus our gender," she told Business Insider. "Some of the sales floor people, mostly men - even managers - would objectify the women."</p><p>For instance, this former ZocDoc saleswoman says, she would take an alternate route to ZocDoc's lunch room to avoid being subjected to her male colleagues looking at and making comments about her body or her outfit, like "your shirt is a little too tight or your skirt is a little too tight," she says. </p><p>This same former saleswoman also says that when ZocDoc makes new hires, the company sends out pictures of new employees and that male colleagues would make comments about their appearance by saying things like, "Oh, we have a bad batch today."</p><blockquote class="pullquote">Male colleagues would make comments about the appearance of other new hires, saying things like 'Oh, we have a bad batch today.'</blockquote><p>Other former ZocDoc saleswomen shared similar anecdotes with Business Insider. </p><p>"I would definitely recommend any male out of college to go to ZocDoc to build their sales acumen, but girls I would steer away 100%," a former salesperson told Business Insider.</p><p>Another female former employee says what happens at ZocDoc isn't abnormal for a sales company. Based on her experiences at ZocDoc and other companies, she says, these places target and attract recent college grads who crave competition, energy, and most importantly money.</p><p>"Sales isn't the safest career path for any woman and it's obviously not the most stable," she tells Business Insider.</p><p>"Of course [young, male employees] are going to womanize and gawk at the only two women on the sales floor. Of course they don't know what an actual office environment is supposed to look like and how they're supposed to act."</p><h2><strong>"Churn and burn"<br /></strong></h2><p>On the sales floor at ZocDoc, employees say there's a phrase used over and over again: "churn and burn." Former employees say this phrase indicates the competitive, often stressful nature of work in ZocDoc's sales division.</p><p>"They are full steam ahead," one former salesperson told Business Insider. "They have this arrogance in the company where the human capital is of zero value."</p><p>A former employee at ZocDoc told Business Insider that employee turnover at the company is high. The company recruits and brings in batches of new employees regularly because so many end up leaving or quitting, the employee alleges.</p><p>"I have never seen anything like it in my life," this former employee says. "And I've been in sales for 11-plus years. One former salesperson tells Business Insider that she started her Med School class with 30 new hires.</p><p>Most of them were gone in three months, and now, a year later, there's only one other person from her training program left. </p><p>"To be there for a year is an accomplishment," she told Business Insider. "Either you are really crazy or you're doing really well."</p><p>One former employee says the stress of working at ZocDoc led her to seek out professional psychiatric care.</p><p>"I never used any psychotropics until I worked at ZocDoc," she says. "I went to a psychiatrist, and I was put on Prozac."</p><p>This person left ZocDoc several months ago. She says she's no longer on Prozac, either.</p><p>"It was bizarre. It was really really depressing," she recalls. "I honestly don't know how I lasted that long."</p><p>Because of the hours that people on the sales floor work, one former employee says some ZocDoc salespeople took cocaine or Adderall. </p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"There was a lot of cocaine around the office - because you know, you gotta come in and cold call from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., take an hour commute home, go to sleep and then wake up in the morning and do it all again," he says.</span></p><blockquote class="pullquote">There was a lot of cocaine around the office - because you know, you gotta come in and cold call from 7 am to 8 pm, take an hour commute home, go to sleep and then wake up in the morning and do it all again. </blockquote><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Other former employees corroborated this story. </span></p><p>"All the employees were on Adderall, pretty much. There was one salesperson who was promoted and is no longer there as of two weeks ago, but he was giving other employees Adderall and coke," a former salesperson told Business Insider. </p><p class="p1">A company spokesperson provided the following statement to Business Insider when reached for comment:</p><p class="p1">"We hear time and again from our team members that ZocDoc is a great place to work. We try every day to uphold a positive culture that encourages people to speak up and use their voices to make our company better.</p><p class="p1">"We have a long-standing policy against any forms of unlawful harassment or discrimination and never condone illegal drug use.</p><p class="p1">"Our sales team is an important engine of the company and, like any maturing sales organization, is evolving. Over time, we have strengthened our recruiting and training programs and continue to emphasize and support quality performance."</p><h2><strong>Who's running this place?</strong></h2><p><span>Former employees say ZocDoc's founders and CEO are open to speaking with employees, offering "office hours" and one-on-ones for employees who have questions or problems. "However, they don't really care or want to fix the turnover issues, or any other issues for that matter."</span></p><p><span>Other former employees echoed this sentiment. CEO Cyrus Massoumi, according to one former employee, is "extremely aware of the problems with the hiring and firing."</span></p><p><span>Interestingly, ZocDoc has been named a "best place to work" by <a href="http://www.crainsnewyork.com/gallery/20131206/FEATURES/120909999/21">Crain's</a> for several years in a row and one of the 50 best small- and medium-size companies to work for by </span><span><a href="http://fortune.com/2014/09/18/50-best-small-and-medium-size-companies-to-work-for-2014/">Fortune</a></span><span>. These rankings are determined, in part, by employee surveys administered by anonymous, independent third parties. </span></p><p>In addition, 30% of ZocDoc's leadership team and 40% of the company's entire team are women. For comparison, at Google, 22% of the company's leadership team and 30% of its entire staff are women. </p><h2>A bigger issue</h2><p>Two of the former employees who Business Insider spoke with say that while ZocDoc's sales floor does have a problematic culture, the stressful, male-dominant environment is not specific to just the one startup. Rather, that culture exists on the salesfloors (and elsewhere) at plenty of tech companies, the two ex-employees said.</p><p>Startups have repeatedly earned a reputation for being environments dominated by young men fresh out of college with no experience leading companies. </p><p><a href="http://www.motherjones.com/media/2012/04/silicon-valley-brogrammer-culture-sexist-sxsw">At a 2012 SXSW talk</a> called <span>"Adding Value as a Non-Technical No Talent Ass-Clown," Matt Van Horn, then an executive at social media startup Path, told stories about sending "bikini shots" of women to the company's co-founders and talked about using campus recruitment as a way to <span>"attract the hottest girls." </span></span></p><p><span><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55c4c57d2acae78b0e8be048-4864-3648/businessinsiderphoto1 (1).jpg" alt="whitney wolfe bumble" data-mce-source="Whitney Wolfe" data-mce-caption="Whitney Wolfe, co-founder of Tinder and founder of Bumble" /><p class="source"><span>Whitney Wolfe</span></p><p class="caption">Whitney Wolfe, former VP of marketing at Tinder and founder of dating app Bumble</p></div><p></p></div></div>"Van Horn wasn't even 10 minutes into the talk [when] several clearly irritated women (and a couple of men) had gotten up and walked out," <a href="http://www.motherjones.com/media/2012/04/silicon-valley-brogrammer-culture-sexist-sxsw" target="_self">says Mother Jones' Tasneem Raja, who attended the talk</a>. "I joined them." </span></span></p><p><span><span>The "brogrammer" and frat-house mentality extends beyond employees. </span></span></p><p><span><span>Female entrepreneurs seeking funding for their startups are both ignored by investors who say they don't invest in women because they <span>"<a href="http://www.wired.com/2014/07/gender-gap/">don't like the way women think</a>" and hit on when they're trying to present their pitch decks and talk business.</span></span></span></p><p>In May 2014, <a href="http://valleywag.gawker.com/fuck-bitches-get-leid-the-sleazy-frat-emails-of-snap-1582604137" target="_blank">Valleywag</a> published emails sent by Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel in 2009 and 2010, while he was an undergrad at Stanford. Spiegel's emails to his fraternity brothers, littered with obscenities, describe women as sexual objects.</p><p><span>A month later, Tinder's <span>former vice president of marketing</span> Whitney Wolfe filed a lawsuit against her former employer. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tinder-lawsuit-and-sexual-harassment-text-messages-2014-7">In her complaint</a>, she alleged that Tinder co-founder Justin Mateen "<span>repeatedly called Ms. Wolfe a 'whore,' including in front of CEO Sean Rad, and he told Ms. Wolfe that he was taking away her 'Co-Founder' title because having a young female co-founder makes the company seem like a 'joke' and 'devalues' the company." Wolfe later settled with Tinder and IAC, its parent company, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/whitney-wolfe-settles-sexual-harassment-tinder-lawsuit-1-million-2014-11">for just over $1 million</a>.</span></span></p><p><span></span><span></span><span>"I've been through three different sales companies and they were all like a 'frat house,'" one former ZocDoc salesperson told Business Insider.</span></p><p><span>"You'll see people giving high fives, chest bumps, chant, or just 'bro out' as if they won the winning goal in a game," this former employee added.
