This sporting extravaganza is touted to be the largest event to take place in the Beijing National Stadium after the 2008 Summer Olympics.<br />

With just one day to go for the festivities to begin, we take you through the lives of the five fastest men on Earth.<br />

<strong>1. </strong><strong><keyword id="28723" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Usain-Bolt">Usain Bolt</keyword></strong><br />
Twenty-eight year old Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt is a name familiar to most of us. Widely regarded as the fastest person ever, he had announced on February that he would retire after the 2017 World Championships, making this his second-last run. Among his many achievements, one that stands out is undoubtedly him being the first man to hold both the 100 metres and 200 metres world records.<br />
At the world championships this year, Bolt will face Justin Gaitlin for the first time and their race which will take place on Sunday evening in Beijing is easily going to be the most anticipated race.<br />

<strong>2. </strong><strong><keyword id="74856" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Tyson-Gay">Tyson Gay</keyword></strong><br />
Thirty-three year old American track and field sprinter Tyson Gay is the second fastest athlete, with his 100 m personal best of 9.69 seconds making the American record. Gay is also a four-time U.S champion in the 100 m.<br />
In July 2013, Gay had tested positive for a banned substance, following which he withdrew from consideration for the World Championships in Moscow, leading to the United States Anti-Doping Agency suspending him till 23 June, 2014 and stripping him off his silver medal earned at the 2012 Summer Olympics.<br /> At the world championships this year, he is looking to emerge victorious against Justin Gaitlin, who defeated him and <keyword id="77839" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Asafa-Powell">Asafa Powell</keyword> in a 100m in Lausanne, Switzerland in July, which was considered a preview of the World Championships.<br />

<strong>3. </strong><strong><keyword id="143714" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Yohan-Blake">Yohan Blake</keyword></strong><br />
Twenty-three year old Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake became the youngest 100 m champion when he won the gold medal at the 2011 world championships. Nicknamed, ‘The Beast,” Blake’s 100 m personal best of 9.69 seconds equaled him with Tyson Gay for the distinction of the second fastest man. Blake is also the only man, apart from Usain Bolt to break the 19.30 in the 200 m.<br />
At the World Championships this year, Blake should look towards overcoming the fear of an injury, as said by his coach Glen Mills.<br />

<strong>4. </strong><strong>Asafa Powell</strong><br />
Thirty-two year old Asafa Powell, another Jamaican sprinter who specializes in 100 m races, held the 100 m world record for almost three years, between June 2005 to May, 2008, with times of 9.77 and 9.74 seconds respectively.<br />
Powell had won the men’s 100 m event at the Luzern meet this June after clocking 9.87 seconds. At the World Championships this year, he is eyeing for nothing, but gold.<br />

<strong>5. </strong><strong><keyword id="143216" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Justin-Gatlin">Justin Gatlin</keyword></strong><br />
Thirty- three year old American sprinter, Justin Gaitlin is a twice World indoor champion in the 60-metre dash, who clocked his 100 m personal best of 9.74 seconds, this May in Doha.<br />
Going head-on with Usain Bolt in the 100m and 200m races at this World Championships, Gaitlin is unfazed of the big ‘bad guy’ tag handed down to him, in case he defeats Bolt.<br />
Gaitlin also refuses to consider himself as a ‘doping cheat,’ arguing that his testing positive for a stimulant for the first time was a result of medication he was using over the years. The second, he claimed was a result of a masseur rubbing testosterone cream into his legs.<br />

World Athletics Championships: Meet the five fastest men on Earth

Be a gentleman."</p><p>"I could see it in my mom's face.&#xa0;Because she's my mom," he said.</p><p>Gatlin, at age 33, hasn't exactly been accepted back into the sport in open arms by all.&#xa0;When Bolt came from behind to upset Gatlin - who stumbled in the final 10 meters&#xa0;in an uncharacteristically sloppy display - the BBC commentator openly celebrated Bolt's triumph.</p><p>"He's saved his title! He's saved his reputation! Usain Bolt loses final individual race of his career to American Justin Gaitlin

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="418425" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Team-USA">Team USA</keyword> was suspended from the mixed-gender 4x400-meter <keyword id="178718" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="relay">relay</keyword> at the Tokyo <keyword id="6360967" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="olympics">Olympics</keyword> on Friday. </li><li>But after an official appeal, the IOC reviewed the incident and reinstate the two athletes.</li><li>Team USA was favored to win gold and finished in first place before the disqualification.</li></ul><p>Team USA was disqualified from the mixed-gender 4x400-meter relay at the Tokyo Olympics on Friday because two sprinters made a baton pass outside the designated zone. But after an official appeal, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) reinstated the team and kept its gold medal hopes alive.</p><p>Elija Godwin and Lynna Irby, competing in their first Olympics, initially performed a baton pass in an unauthorized location, but it was likely do to an officiating error, which is why the IOC reinstated the 22-year-old athletes.</p><p>Irby was <a href="https://twitter.com/seba_krystek/status/1421068505336717314?s=20">seen</a> standing outside of the hand-off zone before Godwin reached her. Team USA, which was favored to win gold, finished in first place at the event, but officials announced the disqualification shortly after. </p><p>"Mistakes happen," Godwin said after the event. "We are human. We do make mistakes. If at the end of the day, we DQ'd, I know I'm going to hold my head up high because we went out and competed our best."</p><p>Team USA filed an official appeal for the disqualification to the International Olympic Committee shortly after the event, and they it seems to have been paid off. </p><p>Team USA lost its last appeal for an incident similar to this at the 2016 Rio Olympics. American sprinters were disqualified from the men's 4x100 meter relay after leadoff runner Mike Rodgers was ruled to have passed the baton to Justin Gatlin outside the first exchange zone. <keyword id="28723" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Usain-Bolt">Usain Bolt</keyword> of <keyword id="28724" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jamaica">Jamaica</keyword> ended up winning the race anyway, and Team USA did not win the appeal. </p><p>Four-time Olympic gold winner Michael Johnson took to Twitter shortly after the Friday's event to give his perspective on the mishap and blamed officials for lining Irby up out of place before the race started. </p><blockquote class="twitter-tweet blockquote" data-lang="en" data-cards="" data-conversation="">-Michael Johnson  (@MJGold) <a href="https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/1421090400169779205?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">July 30, 2021</a></blockquote><p>Team USA <keyword id="710581" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sprinting">sprinting</keyword> coach Lance Brauman then expressed the same argument, as he told <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/2021/07/30/team-usa-mixed-gender-relay-disqualified-tokyo-olympics/5427062001/">USA Today</a> that "officials did not line up the second runners correctly."</p><p>There have been eight other instances since 1995 of Team USA sprinters getting disqualified or failing to get the baton around at Olympic or World Championship relay events. </p>

A US relay team favored to win gold at the Tokyo Olympics was reinstated after disqualification due to a possible officiating error

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Team USA's hope for redemption turned into disaster on Wednesday night in the men's 4x100-meter relay.</li><li>At the past two Olympics, Team USA had dropped the baton in the final of the race, leaving them off the podium.</li><li>This year, it was a baton bobble that cost the Americans, and it left them short of even qualifying for the final in Tokyo.</li></ul><p>The Team USA men's 4x100-meter relay team is living through another nightmare in Tokyo.</p><p>On Wednesday night, the Americans failed to reach the final after finishing in sixth in their qualifying heat.</p><p>The race fell apart for the Americans during a botched handoff between Fred Kerley and Ronnie Baker, running the second and third legs of the race, respectively.</p><p>While Baker held on to the baton and get back to running, the difficult handoff clearly slowed the team down at a crucial juncture of the race.</p><p>Closer Cravon Gillespe was able to run in contention with the leaders during the first stretch of the final leg but was quickly left in the dust.</p><blockquote class="twitter-tweet blockquote" data-lang="en" data-cards="" data-conversation="">-#TokyoOlympics (@NBCOlympics) <a href="https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/1423113184035147776">August 5, 2021</a></blockquote><p>The top three teams automatically qualified for the final, but in Team USA's heat, the fourth and fifth place finishers - Germany and Ghana - were also able to reach the final as the two fastest remaining teams from both qualifying heats.</p><p>Team USA was just 0.02 seconds behind Ghana, and the spot in the final that would have come with beating them.</p><p>For Kerley and Baker, it's an especially disappointing turn. Both men finished in the top five of the men's 100m final earlier in the games, with Kerley taking the silver medal. Speed is not an issue with these two. But the communication between them was clearly off and ultimately cost the Americans a spot in the final of a race they were heavily favored to win.</p><p>The disappointing turn of events is only the latest in <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/olympics/2021/08/04/relay-baton-handoff-usa-olympics/">a series of baton-related disasters that have struck</a> the Team USA men's 4x100m relay over the past few Olympics.</p><p>At the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, a botched pass between Darvis Patton and Tyson Gay sent the baton clattering to the track, leaving the Americans out of the final.</p><p>Then in 2016 in Rio, Mike Rodgers made his pass to Justin Gatlin too early, resulting in a DQ.</p><p>Now in 2020, Team USA is living the same nightmare once again.</p><p>Legendary American runner Carl Lewis was not at all impressed with the team's performance in Tokyo.</p><blockquote class="twitter-tweet blockquote" data-lang="en" data-cards="" data-conversation="">-Carl Lewis (@Carl_Lewis) <a href="https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/1423114725802614785">August 5, 2021</a></blockquote><p>The runners themselves didn't have much of an idea of what had happened either.</p><blockquote class="twitter-tweet blockquote" data-lang="en" data-cards="" data-conversation="">-Tom Schad (@Tom_Schad) <a href="https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/1423118708340269058">August 5, 2021</a></blockquote><p>For now, Team USA will have three more years of practice until Paris 2024, where they can get another shot at a medal in a race they should be dominating.</p><p>At least there's plenty of time to practice their handoffs between now and then.</p>

USA men's 4x100-meter relay team misses out on final after third disastrous baton handoff in four Oympics

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/57b11bcedb5ce951008b6959-1500/gettyimages-589524624.jpg" alt="Usain Bolt Rio Final" data-mce-source="Paul Gilham/Getty" /><p class="source"><span>Paul Gilham/Getty</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Usain Bolt won the men's 100 meters on Sunday night in Rio in convincing fashion, pulling away from the field to capture gold in 9.81 seconds and retain the title of "World's Fastest Man."</p><p>With the win, Bolt becomes the first sprinter in history to win gold in the 100 meters in three consecutive Olympics. </p><p>Bolt entered the Rio Olympics as something of a question mark, having dropped out of Jamaican Olympic qualifying five weeks before the Games with a nagging hamstring injury. But after being named to the Olympic team by the Jamaican track and field team, he has looked like his old self in Rio.</p><p>In the preliminary round of the 100 meters on Saturday, Bolt looked solid, practically jogging into the semifinal despite an average start. Then, in the semifinal earlier on Sunday night, he again cruised to victory, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/usain-bolt-smile-in-100-meter-semifinal-2016-8">flashing a toothy smile</a> and looking around at his competitors as he effortlessly flew across the line.</p><p>In the final, Bolt got off to a slow start, while American Justin Gatlin looked to be closing in a surprise gold. Usain Bolt wins 100-meter world championship, proving he is still the fastest man alive

Usain Bolt starts jogging before the finish line, still destroys everyone in the 200 meters

King later mocked Efimova when she won her heat, and chastised Efimova's history of doping.</p><p><a href="http://www.nbcolympics.com/video/lilly-king-yulia-efimova-address-doping-comments">In a somewhat awkward press conference</a> after winning gold on Monday, with Efimova sitting by her, King said she stood by her statements about Efimova and doping. When a reporter asked King if she thinks US sprinter Justin Gatlin should be on the team after twice failing drug tests and being suspended, King again stood her ground.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Again, I have to respect [the IOC's] decision, even if it's not something I necessarily agree with. No, do I think people who have been caught for doping offenses should be on the team? No, they shouldn't. </p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"It's unfortunate that we have to see that, and then it's such a toss-up in between sports and in between countries. It's just something that needs to be, you know, set in stone that this is what we're gonna do to settle this and that should be the end of it. There should not be any bouncing back and forth."</p><p>King later answered a question about Australian Mack Horton, who <a href="http://www.foxsports.com.au/olympics/mack-horton-delivers-ultimate-olympic-sledge-then-pips-sun-yang-to-claim-memorable-gold-medal/news-story/7a4d4846dd81fee2fb1b547ce10f0efb">called his win over China's Sun Yang a "win for clean athletes."</a> King supported Horton's comments.</p><p>"Total props to him for speaking out first, I admire that. But he said what everyone was thinking, and I also said what everyone was thinking. So, I do think it is a victory for clean sport and just to show you can do it while competing clean for your whole life."</p><p>As Sports Illsutrated's <a href="https://twitter.com/SITimLayden/status/762862215519096833">Tim Layden</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/SITimLayden/status/763057289104388097">noted</a>, Gatlin's suspension was served six years ago. Lilly King - the 19-year-old swimmer who took home gold after chastising a Russian rival - issued a strong statement about doping in the Olympics

With the&#xa0;2015 World Championships right around the corner, Bolt's times were so off this summer that even he had to admit that&#xa0;something was up. After running a 20.29-second 200 meters in New York in June - a time that didn't even crack the top-20 in the world in 2015 - Bolt sounded lost.</p><p>"I really don't know what happened today," <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2015/jun/13/usain-bolt-200m-new-york-icahn-adidas-grand-prix">he told the Guardian</a>. "We've just go to go back to the drawing board and figure it out."</p><p>"This season is not going so smoothly,"&#xa0;he&#xa0;added. "I'm trying to figure out what's going on. I need to get on top of things. With this pace, it looks like trouble."</p><p><div><iframe width="620" height="349" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/JNH67Qy5yRI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">Two weeks later he <a href="http://olympictalk.nbcsports.com/2015/06/25/usain-bolt-jamaican-championships/">pulled out of the Jamaican Championships</a> and announced <a href="http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/athletics/33336268">he wouldn't be competing in two Diamond League events with a pelvic&#xa0;injury</a>, his second significant injury in four months.&#xa0;His lone&#xa0;encouraging result came less&#xa0;a month before the World Championships, when he ran a 9.87-second 100 meters on a rain-soaked track in&#xa0;London.</p><p>In the weeks before the&#xa0;World Championships - to be held&#xa0;in the same Bird's Nest Stadium in Beijing where a 22-year-old Bolt exploded onto the scene seven years earlier&#xa0;-&#xa0;Bolt found himself in the unlikely role of the underdog. American Justin Gatlin had 2015's fastest times in both the 100m and 200m, and hadn't lost a race in two years.</p><p>The narrative seemed ready-made: Gatlin (<a href="http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/athletics/34020876">the villain</a>) would beat an injured, out-of-form Bolt at the World Championships, setting up a rematch at the Olympics 12 months from now. If everyone stuck to the script,&#xa0;a rejuvenated Bolt would avenge his loss in Rio, restore order to the track universe, and maybe even walk into the sunset, retiring&#xa0;as the world's greatest sprinter at age 30.</p><p>It would have been a great story, but it&#xa0;was never going to happen. Usain Bolt was having the worst year of his career - and then he reminded that world that we've never seen anything like him

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/57b1ecdadb5ce94b088b6bbe-1414/usain bolt.jpg" alt="usain bolt" data-mce-source="Cameron Spencer/Getty" /><p class="source"><span>Cameron Spencer/Getty</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Usain Bolt continued his unprecedented dominance over the sprinting world Sunday night, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/usain-bolt-wins-100-meters-in-rio-third-straight-olympic-gold-2016-8">winning a gold medal in the 100-meter dash</a>.</p><p>However, his third-straight gold wasn't without drama, as after cruising in the semifinal, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/usain-bolt-smile-in-100-meter-semifinal-2016-8">smiling for the cameras before the finish line</a>, he struggled out of the gate in the final.</p><p>It was all fine, of course, as he then pulled ahead and won a narrow victory, running in 9.8 seconds. However, after the race, he ripped the Olympic schedule for leaving him fatigued after the semis.</p><p><span>"It was very hard to run fast because the turnaround time was really, really, really short," Bolt said (<a href="http://news.nationalpost.com/sports/rio-2016/usain-bolt-blames-really-stupid-schedule-for-slow-100m-olympic-final">via the National Post</a>). "It was ridiculous as far as I am concerned, because I felt so good in the semifinals."</span></p><p><span>After the semifinals, there was just over an hour of waiting time before the final began. Bolt continued, saying he didn't have enough recovery time in between the races.</span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"It was like, 'Yo, I probably could run a fast time,' but by the time you get back to the warm-up area and start warming up again, it's time to go back out. So for me, it was really stupid. ... That is why the race is slow. There is no way you can run and go back around and run fast times again. It was hard for us."</p><p>For Bolt, the brief rest time didn't have much impact, but others complained about it, too. US sprinter Justin Gatlin, who finished second to Bolt, said, "I was tired going into the final, so I was just focusing on myself. It was such a quick turn around."</p><p>The scheduling choice was a bit puzzling, but in a sport that packs several events into one night, perhaps it's an inevitable result of a busy timetable. Usain Bolt ripped the 'really stupid' Olympic schedule after winning a less-than-perfect gold-medal race

It's the <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2015/jun/27/trayvon-bromell-sprinting-world-us-trials">fastest time ever for a teenager</a> and ties for the 2nd-fastest time of 2015. At age 19 Bromell is the <a href="http://www.alltime-athletics.com/m_100ok.htm">10th-fastest man of all time,</a> and the <a href="https://twitter.com/nzaccardi/status/614242504796471296">4th-fastest American</a>. He went on to finish second to Tyson Gay in the 100m finals at the US Championships, which earned him a spot on the US team at the World Championships in Beijing in August.</p><p>"I started slowing down, I didn't want to run too fast and wear myself out," <a href="http://www.flotrack.org/coverage/252246-USATF-Outdoor-Championships-2015/video/772973-Trayvon-Bromell-runs-wind-legal-984-in-prelims#.VZFXee1VhHw">he said after his historic performance</a>. "I'm really surprised. When I slowed it down I didn't think I was going to run that fast. Man it's crazy. Historically, sprinters peak in their 20s. Alistair Tweedale&#xa0;of the Telegraph <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/athletics/11703204/The-next-Usain-Bolt-Trayvon-Bromell-is-the-fastest-teenager-ever.html">dug into the numbers and found that the five fastest active sprinters</a> - Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell, Tyson Gay, Justin Gatlin, Yohan Blake - only Blake broke 10 seconds before age 20.</p><p>Bromell is <a href="https://twitter.com/usatf/status/614633824534663168">the first US teenager to ever qualify for the worlds in the 100m</a>.</p><p>Baylor coach Todd Harbour told USA Today's Paul Myerberg that <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/2015/06/27/trayvon-bromell-track-and-field-world-championship-baylor-university-star/29381627/">it's only a matter of time before a shoe company offers him a monster deal to go pro:</a></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"If he runs the way he's been running … my gosh. It's going to be hard for some of these shoe companies not to say, 'This is the next one. This is the guy we've been waiting for.' They've been waiting for the next great sprinter to come along."</p><p>Bromell's assent to the top of the US track world has been rapid. He <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2015/jun/27/trayvon-bromell-sprinting-world-us-trials">broke his left hip in 10th grade</a>, but two years later he set the high school record in the 100m at 9.9 seconds and won the Gatorade Track &amp; Field Athlete of the Year award. A year later he <a href="http://deadspin.com/college-freshman-runs-wind-aided-9-77-second-100-meters-1578685146">posted a wind-aided 9.77 at the Big 12 championships</a>, which only intensified the <a href="http://olympictalk.nbcsports.com/2014/04/02/trayvon-bromell-zharnel-hughes-track-and-field/">"Next Big Thing" hype</a>.</p><div><div><iframe class="vine-embed" src="https://vine.co/v/MHqWQU79OX0/embed/simple?audio=0" width="600" height="600" frameborder="0"></iframe><script async="" src="//platform.vine.co/static/scripts/embed.js" charset="utf-8"></script></div></div><p class="embed-spacer"></p><p>&#xa0;</p><p>In early June&#xa0;<a href="http://www.ncaa.com/2015-division-i-mens-and-womens-track-and-field-championship">he got beat the NCAA finals</a>, but his performance at the US Championships put him back on track.
